Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany, with a population of 1.8 million in 2018.  Its name reflects its history as a member of the medieval Hanseatic League, as a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire, a city-state, and one of the 16 states of Germany. Hamburg was a fully sovereign state before the unification of Germany in 1871.  Before the constitutional changes of 1919, the civil republic was ruled by a class of hereditary grand burgers, or Hanseaten.
Hamburg has been an important financial centre for centuries, and it is the seat of the Berenberg Bank, the second oldest bank in the world.
The city is located on the southern point of the Jutland Peninsula, between continental Europe to the south and Scandinavia to the north, at the confluence of the Elbe and its two right tributaries the Alster and Bille.  Hamburg is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe.
Hamburg's city centre is situated around the Binnenalster (Inner Alster) and Außenalster (Outer Alster), formed by damming the Alster to create the lakes.
The island of Neuwerk (in the Wadden Sea) is part of Hamburg, with a population of only 32 in 2016.  The uninhabited islands of Scharhörn and Nigehörn (in the North Sea) are also part of Hamburg.
The neighbourhoods of Neuenfelde, Cranz, Francop and Finkenwerder are part of the Altes Land, an area of reclaimed marshland straddling parts of Lower Saxony and Hamburg.  This is the largest contiguous fruit-producing region in Central Europe.  The Hasselbrack, in Neugraben-Fischbek, is the highest point in Hamburg, at 116.2 metres above sea level.

A mutual effort for [Search and Rescue, Disaster and Relief, and Humanitarian Aid] in Vanuatu
Tumblr media
Photo: Nigehörn, one of the proposed islands to host the refugees in which stretches less than 50 acres, rising about 5 m (16 ft) above sea level, it is not protected from storm surges, and is at risk of coastal erosion, especially on the western side.
A joint effort has been established between Germany, China, Marshall Islands, Indonesia, and Fiji in order to safeguard Vanuatu’s future statehood. The mutual task-force will utilize their naval vessels and government-owned boats to help relocate the people of Vanuatu who are displaced and currently need rescue. The five states will also utilize their Disaster Risk Workers cleanup and work in coordination with Vanuatu National Government  to rebuild damaged areas.
There is an agreement upon the Use of Relief Funds of Disaster Risk and a portion of Food from the Agriculture Sector of Germany with the aim to provide basic necessities for the displaced, while simultaneously to accommodate temporary asylums for the displaced in several German Artificial Islands such as Nigehörn, Langlütjen I and II, Dithmarschen, Wilhelmstein, and Bremerhaven. The joint action also refers to the utilization of Germany's Experts of Disaster Risk to help train relief operatives of Vanuatu so as for them to better prepare for future consequences of today’s catastrophe and deployment (prevails only once Vanuatu has successfully been rebuilt).
Issues remain on Germany’s side regarding the refugee policy, however. Local residents in Elbe as well as the local council described the move as "outlandish and foolish"; surprised that the Federal government would consider the patch even habitable land.  Rising about 5 m (16 ft) above sea level, it is not protected from storm surges, and is at risk of coastal erosion, especially on the western side.
