I GOT A NEW CAR
Everybody meet the new baby that i will never shut up about forever!
Tumblr media
This is Clifford the Third, my new 1996 Nissan Pickup!! I probably paid too much for her but given that I live in Massachusetts and she has virtually no rust I’m okay with that lol.
So a brief history of the Nissan Pickup! These trucks were released in the US in 1985 and were sold through 1997, when they were replaced with the Frontier. They were the successor to the beloved Datsun 720, which had been in production since 1979. They are in fact just called the Pickup! They’re colloquially known as the D21 - their chassis code, and the Hardbody, because of the double walled durable construction of the trucks’ bed.
Tumblr media
The D21 was available with a couple different engines and drivetrain layouts. Mine is a 4x4 with the KA24 motor (which it shared with the 240SX/Silvia). She’s also a King Cab, meaning she has a slightly elongated wheelbase to allow for two small inwards facing jump seats in the back of the cab. Still a two door though.
Tumblr media
AND SHE’S A STICK! She has a 5-speed manual transmission, and it’s the best transmission i’ve ever personally had in a car. She’s my third manual, the other two being a 1999 Toyota Corolla and a 2004 Subaru WRX, both of which were great but the Corolla had a really sloppy gearbox that felt incredibly vague at times, whereas the WRX had a sportier transmission that was pretty unforgiving and stiff. This one is definitive about where each gear is, but also won’t get too jerky or loud if you shift a little early or late.
Nissan Hardbody trucks are known and loved for their durability, versatility, and simplicity. They’re super bare bones but what they do have is built remarkably well and meant to withstand lots of abuse. If they don’t rust and have basic maintenance kept up it’s not uncommon for them to go 300k+ miles with minimal issues. Mine has around 184k miles, high but manageable. She also has a few modifications from the previous owner, namely a straight piped exhaust (no muffler, just one big long aluminum tube), aftermarket bumpers and lights, locking hubs, and a small lift. The guy i bought it from had plans to make it an off-roader but had too many projects and needed to offload one to make space in his driveway.
While many people either take these off-roading or turn them into drift trucks, my plan is to bring her back to mostly stock. I’m in the process of tracking down OEM bumpers and a more typical cat-back (from the catalytic converter back) exhaust system so she’s a little less obnoxiously loud. Since i mostly just need reliable transport more than a toy and she is now my sole car, I want to just make her relatively normal. But I love her a lot and am happy to be able to share!

Today Nissan is launching a new Frontier, a big deal since the last one was launched way back in 2004. Nissan designer Hiren Patel, the lead designer on the new truck, says that his team specifically looked back to an earlier fan favorite, Nissan’s 1986-1997 D21 “hardbody” pickup, for inspiration. Although Japan had plenty of input in the D21’s design, it was primarily handled by Nissan Design International (NDI) in California, a studio run by former GM designer Jerry Hirschberg. There were two versions of the D21, the more macho looking one from NDI and a plainer one in Japan. “There’s no such thing as Truckin’ in Japan,” Hirschberg told the LA Times in 1986, pointing out that “recreational” trucks in Japan were pretty rare. Not so much in the USA, and America was the primary market. Like the 720 truck before it, the D21 would be built in Smyrna, Tennessee, sidestepping the Chicken Tax. The Hardbody, which got a rather cheesy superbowl ad in early 1986 filled with models and bodybuilders to suit the name, was the result of Nissan realizing in the late 1970s that more than half of its vehicles were exported to far away places that didn’t necessarily fall in line with the priorities of Japanese customers. The Chicken Tax added expense to imported trucks on top of that cultural exchange, so Nissan’s American factory was, from the start, focused on building trucks. NDI was formed to tailor products aimed at Americans more to U.S. tastes, and the D21 was its first real assignment, with development beginning in the winter of 1982. Mechanically, the D21 was broadly similar to what went before but a little bigger, but Hirschberg’s team made it look both “aero” and “macho” at the same time. Many hardbodies were workaday commuter trucks, but they were also expandable. Most macho of all were trucks like this single-cab 4WD SE V6. From 1990 the hardbody could be ordered with the VG30E as seen in the Z31 300ZX and Infiniti M30, making it a pretty powerful tiny truck for the day, and quite capable off-road. The D21 was also paired with the first Pathfinder, like Toyota’s 4Runner, an outgrowth of the pickup biz. Both were major sales successes almost immediately. https://www.instagram.com/p/CK4ha2UFY5U/?igshid=1ixka3d3q808v

The only thing riskier than buying a vehicle before test driving it? ....driving it across the country to get it home. I’ve already bought and will be attempting to drive a 1994 Nissan D21 Hardbody SE 4x4 V6 Pickup from Idaho to Texas. Thanks to @bisonfeathers for the idea to search Boise and then helping me acquire a truck this old in such good shape. Time to break it in on the 2000 mile trek home...wish me luck! ✌🏻 (at McCall, Idaho)

The Dodge Ramcharger Prospector Can Make You Forget Broncos and Blazers
You’ve probably noticed an increasing number of stories on classic trucks here at Automobile, and it’s not just the case on our site—vintage 4x4s are hot stuff right now. As we’ve noted repeatedly, classic trucks, SUVs, and off-roaders are the next big thing in the collector market, but there’s still time to ride the wave in terms of certain models.
It’s far too late to easily find affordable, top-condition Land Cruisers, Broncos, Wagoneers, and various pickups from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s. Even weirdos like the Isuzu Trooper and unibody XJ-generation Jeep Cherokee are feeling the squeeze.
If we had the capital, we’d start hoarding lesser known models like the Nissan D21 Hardbody or Plymouth Arrow. However, stuff like that isn’t necessarily the best investment, so better money is probably spent on what is perhaps the vintage 4×4 market’s best kept secret: the Dodge Ramcharger.
Pity the poor Ramcharger. Existing deep in the shadow of the Bronco and the Blazer even since new, the Ramcharger gets passed over for big-money builds and restorations, leaving the majority of surviving examples beaten and abused. It’s a shame, considering these two-doors are handsome brutes with a similar brawny, let-your-chest-hair-flow vibe that makes the Bronco and K5 Blazer so popular. We even said as much back in 2012, when we pegged the early Ramcharger as an up and coming Collectible Classic. (Even less well known is its mechanical twin, the Plymouth Trail Duster, shown below with an earlier example of the Dodge.)
We’d start our Mopar 4×4 collection with this 1985 Dodge Ramcharger Prospector that’s crossing the block at Barrett-Jackson’s 2019 Scottsdale auction. It’s covered just 7,563 miles since new, and looks it. You don’t see many Ramchargers this clean, and especially not with the charming Prospector package. Upgraded fully with the Prospector II version of the pack—which this one has—the SUV arrived with two-tone paint, A/C, painted wheels, and power front windows, among other things. Each Prospector II also came standard with the “Royal SE Décor Package,” incorporating bucket seats, a center console, an aluminum grille, and wood applique for the door panels and other locations.
According to the listing, it has the original 5.9-liter (360 ci) V-8, backed by a three-speed automatic. Not much has been done to it over the years, but it’s allegedly refreshed and is ready to drive to local shows and cruise-ins. Smitten? We thought so—we certainly are.
Be sure to check our auctions page for live coverage of the latest news, results, and highlights from Scottsdale, while you can check your local listings for coverage on the Motor Trend Network and Discovery and download the MT app for exclusive streaming coverage of tons of cool cars crossing the block.
