Trading a 2005 Lexus ES 330 (64k miles) for a 2013 Nissan Rogue Select (47k miles) as a DD -- bad idea? via /r/cars
Trading a 2005 Lexus ES 330 (64k miles) for a 2013 Nissan Rogue Select (47k miles) as a DD -- bad idea?
Question is pretty much as it sounds. My husband and I both are drive-it-till-it-dies types, and prefer to keep our cars all the way to the 200-220k mark. I drive 20k per year. I currently own a 2013 Nissan Rogue with 47k on it. I know the Rogue could make it that far, but I am gently skeptical, even with good maintenance. I had to buy the car on short notice in 2015 and did not know about the joys of the CVT. :) It's mildly annoying now, and I have heard they don't age well.
Enter the ES 330. A local dealership has one for sale with approximately 64k on it. That low a mileage would ordinarily worry me, but this one has a service record as long as my arm. The original owner bought it from this same dealership in late 2005, drove it approximately 5-6k miles per year, and did the maintenance like clockwork. No long periods of the mileage staying static to make me wonder -- everything moseys along just as you would expect.
I love this car! Drives like a dream, so smooth and comfortable. Big, lush leather seats, way more comfortable than any I've seen in years. Body is very clean; the styling looks a bit out of date, but not jarringly so. Price wise, all would be a wash; trade in value on the 2013 Rogue=amount owed to bank= $500 less than price of ES 330. So, the new bank loan would be slightly smaller. Either way, in mid-2019, I have a paid off car. The difference is, one way I have a 2013 Nissan Rogue with 97k miles, the other I have a 2005 ES 330 114k.
Two questions: 1) I know that Lexus cars are very long-lasting, but is it realistic to think that a 2005 ES 330, even if very well maintained, could make it all the way to 2025 in good shape? (That is the year I would hit 220k miiles, based on current rate of 20k per year). Am I likely to hit difficulties with even obtaining parts? Are there some core components that are likely to die off simply due to old age? Obiously, we will need to continue doing maintenance, replace batteries, belts, etc. I just wonder if age itself make it less likely that a 2005 car will make it to 2025, regardless of maintenance, etc.
Is this a reasonable thing to do? Or am I just asking for trouble? All thoughts welcome!
