Okay, I finished watching DW 60th specials,and.... bloody hell,is it good to be back home. Because that felt exactly like coming home for christmas and getting piles of your comfort food. But let's do it properly:
Star Beast - if you ever had even a thing for 10th and Donna, this is the biggest present you could've received. I was never into shipping, but 10th and Donna were imho the best Doctor/companion duo, with their personalities creating perfect banter and comedic situations, as well as opening door for drama And guess what? Star Beast did exactly that - I loved that scene where they are separated and just push buttons shouting random technobabble. We were drenched in good, old DW camp and I was so happy.
Wild Blue Yonder - god dammit, that episode was scary. And it showed how little you have to do to make a scary DW episode if the idea is correct. The concept of alien reading your mind, impersonating you and locking you in some devilish version of prisoner's dilemma was spot-on, allowing more private moments between Doctor and Donna. And I got sucker-punched by the appearance of Wilf! I Thought Bernard Cribbins was dead! Well, yeah, he is, but they played it really nicely - in Star Beast they said "oh, he's no longer with us", then clarified he's in some UNIT retirement home and I thought "Oh, well, that is a neat way to close his story with the actor having passed away". BUT NO, WILF IS BACK,BABY! And he's in wheelchair (Wilfchair?). What a way to say goodbye to this character.
The Giggle - okay, this was bizarre, and a little uncoordinated at places imho. Neil Patrick Harris was great as this flamboyant villain, but honestly, he resembled Master more than The Toymaker. And the resolution with him and two Doctors playing ball felt weak. I know what they were going for,but I expected Doctor to truly pull the rug from underneath his feet. And yeah..... now we have two Doctors....? And is he staying with Donna...? That was a little weird as ending.
The Church on Ruby Road - This one was weird, even by DW standards, but it fit with the batshit crazy Christmas episodes. The moment when the new Doctor and Ruby started impromptu singing to the Goblin King I knew I should've left my brain outside. And that has set the stage and expectations for Gatwa's version of the Doctor. And it looks like Ruby will be sticking with him! They've made a good combo.
So those are my thoughts. But if I had to describe the specials in one word, it is that they were memorable. SO MANY stories of Chibnall's era just passed through my head without leaving a single impression...
But these? Oh these will live rent-free for a long time.
Doctor Who is back, baby, and I am so happy.
