A lot of people keep asking what a Free Trade Zone is, well in this post I will clarify what a Free Trade Zone means and also tell you key things you don’t know about Lekki Free Trade Zone.
A Free Trade Zone is an area within which goods may be landed, handled, manufactured or reconfigured, and re-exported .
It is a region where a group of countries have agreed to reduce or eliminate trade barriers, the basic objective being to enhance foreign exchange earnings, develop export-oriented industries and generate employment opportunities for the host country.
Lekki Free Trade Zone covers a total area of about 155 square kilometres in Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area, southeast of Lagos, Nigeria, about 50km from the city center.
This zone has been designed to become a new Lagos and has been granted a series of preferential policies and incentives, and designated as a special economic zone inside Nigeria.
Lekki Free Trade Zone will provide an ideal platform to open up diverse market for all investors and enterprises in the world. It will be a unique landmark of the future development of Lagos state and Nigeria as a whole.
Number 2: JOINT VENTURE PARTNERSHIP.
Lekki Free Trade Zone Is a joint venture partnership established in May 2006 pursuant to the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Act (NEPZA).
The LFZDC comprises a consortium of Chinese Companies by the name China-Africa Lekki Investment Ltd (CALIL) with 60% stakes and Lekki Worldwide Investments Limited (LWIL) owned by the Lagos State Government holding 40% stakes.
Lekki Free Trade Zone is a major catalyst for the development of Lagos state brought about by a collaboration of the Chinese and Nigerian governments.
Currently, the zone is under the management of Lekki Free Zone Development Company (LFZDC).
Number 3: HISTORY MAKING.
It is no longer news that the Lekki Free Trade Zone is the first private free trade zone in Nigeria and the biggest in the whole of West Africa.
Number 4: THE FRONTIER OF TOMORROW’S ENTERPRISE.
Lekki Free Trade Zone is going to become the leading hub and major driver of the Nigerian economy and West Africa as a whole by the time all the infrastructure that is planned starts operation.
5: FAST ATTRACTING INVESTORS.
Lekki Free Trade Zone is Facing the Atlantic Ocean in the south and bordering with Lekki Lagoon in the north, which makes it easy to access the Western African market of about 300 million population and the European and USA market with a population of about 600 million.
6: LEKKI FREE TRADE ZONE IS THE FASTEST GROWING ZONE.
7: THE BIGGEST JOB CREATION ZONE IN WEST AFRICA.
Just imagine how many people will be coming into the zone both within and outside the country, you can only see this as an opportunity if you are smart.
With the construction of the Lekki Deep Sea Port, the New International Airport, Dangote Oil Refinery, Pan Atlantic University, St Augustine University, Eleganza Industrial City, different beach resorts, the proposed 4th Mainland bridge, and other amazing infrastructure, it is obvious that an investment in land around Ibeju Lekki especially in areas along the Lekki Free Trade Zone will reap massive returns few years from now.
So, whether you are buying land for residential / commercial purpose or to resell when the price comes up, you are on the right track.
We have different secured estates in Ibeju - Lekki you can choose from

Cloud House, Mandurah
Cloud House, Mandurah Holiday Real Estate, Western Australia Architecture Development, Photography
Cloud House in Mandurah
14 Feb 2021
Cloud House
Design: Neil Cownie Architect
Location: Mandurah, Western Australia
This apartment-style holiday house allows four generations of the same family to enjoy a holiday together, or alternatively it allows family to enjoy parts of the house separately while on holiday at the same time. The house is a model for how families could enjoy every day living, not just a holiday experience, with the extended family accommodated independently within different zones of one building.
The design of Cloud House strives to provide a ‘sense of belonging’ for its owners and with a ‘sense of place’ to ground the building within its context. The site is located in the South Western corner of Australia within the Aboriginal Noongar Nation, and specifically within the Pinjarup language group of the Noongar people. Central to the creator beliefs of the Noongar people is the Wagyl, a large snake-like creature that was created by the Rainbow Serpent. The Wagyl was tasked to create, then protect, the rivers, lakes, and wetlands. The Wagyl made its way along the coast before giving birth to its young in the estuary, being the vast waterway of the Peel Inlet, an area of water equivalent to the size of Sydney Harbor.
This makes the Peel Inlet a place of significance as the Wagyl’s young grew within the waters of the Inlet before leaving to create the surrounding waterways.
The site of Cloud House is located adjacent to the Mandurah Channel, being the pivotal point at which the Wagyl came out of the Indian Ocean to create the vast waterways of the Peel Inlet. The fluidity of elements of the building are intended to show a respectful acknowledgement of the creator beliefs of the Noongar nation as much as they represent the playful interpretation of clouds.
Cloud House is intended to provide a sense of fun and theatre in a departure from everyday suburban living as the building draws upon its location through the use of nautical navigational colours of red, blue and green in the external roller blinds, and the red clouds of the setting sun over the adjacent Indian Ocean which are reflected in the hovering red freeform concrete ‘cloud’ over the top of the building. The building enjoys views to the marina, ocean and the local boat ramp.
Cloud House is a multi-generational holiday house, provided in the typology of an apartment building. The holiday house has been designed for flexible use where the entire family can holiday together, or alternatively a couple can enjoy an intimate weekend away by themselves while using only a portion of the building.
This house sleeps seventeen people as it accommodates four generations of the one family. While the house was designed for holiday use, the design also serves as a model for potential everyday living for multi-generational families under the one roof. The multi-generational family is accommodated in an ‘apartment’ typology where vertical zoning allows independent living.
The vertical zoning allows opportunities for spaces to relate between floors to enable the family to holiday together as one if they so choose.
So ‘let’s do the maths’; 227 square meters is the area of the average Western Australian home which accommodates an average of 2.6 people. That equates to your average WA home providing 87.3 square meters per person.
My client’s family lives in four separate suburban homes. Four times the average WA house area adds up to a combined area of 908 square meters.
Whereas Cloud House, accommodating seventeen people with a total area of 493 square meters, provides just 29 square meters of building per person.
The Cloud House model offers an efficient and economical alternative for multi-generational living.
We took the opportunity to create an iconic ‘bookend’ building as the site is open to the public realm on three sides at the end of an underwhelming row of marina front houses.
In seeking a relevant design language for this locality, the design of Cloud House was intended to form a theatrical stage set backdrop to the daily ‘theatre and drama’ of the adjacent public boat ramp. The building was envisaged to provide a commentary about its own ‘place making’ as public theatre.
It was necessary to first look further afield than the immediate locality to find an appropriate maritime framework to hold the elements of the design of the building together. The finger wharfs of Sydney harbour with their robust structural grids were a reference point for the concrete structural frame work of Cloud House. The work of artist Jeffrey Smart was also an influence in the elevational treatment of the building where sea container like panels are set within the robust structural grid.
Then came the fun, as after all, this is a holiday house where the intention was to provide the family with a joyful holiday destination that makes a distinction from their everyday suburban living. The immediate nautical environment of the marina has been referenced in the use of the maritime navigation colours of green, red and blue which are expressed in the window awnings and external roller blinds. The roller blinds form a tapestry which reference the sails & flags of the yachts in the marina. The blinds make the building come alive as the appearance of the building is constantly changing with the opening and closing of individual blinds creating elevations of both solid and void. Importantly these blinds also bring a layering of privacy to the occupants of the building in what is a very public location, along with providing sun and wind protection from the predominantly west facing building.
The building responds to the conflict of major views to the west while dealing with the environmental factors of sun and wind along with privacy from the adjacent public open space through the use of the coloured external roller blinds. The buildings appearance changes as blinds open and close, to either appear as a solid object when closed, or to reveal a series of recesses or voids in the façade when a blind is opened.
The changing tapestry of blinds reflects the nature of signals being sent by nautical flags. By night the building is a navigational outpost, like a lighthouse, sending signals to the boats on the ocean entering the adjacent entry into the Mandurah Channel.
The rectilinear form of the building itself is countered by the freeform concrete roof, intended to hover upon the top of the building as though it is a cloud. This cloud referencing speaks of the buildings place, where the colourful red and orange clouds of the setting sun are frequently found to the west of the house over the Indian ocean.
The cloud referencing continues through to the interior of the building where curvaceous ceilings roll through like the underside of a cloud. The nautical colour of the exterior finds its way internally to door panels, ladders, and cabinetwork highlights.
Internal living spaces connect to the exterior as though they are a balcony themselves, while highlight windows allow north-eastern light to penetrate down through the central void space.
Juliet balconies and balconies surround living spaces on all sides and allow maintenance and cleaning of the windows in the harsh salt ridden environment.
If you have ever experienced launching a boat from a public boat ramp, you will realise that boat ramps are places of high drama and theatre.
With a public boat ramp less than 50 meters away, Cloud House itself becomes part of the theatre and drama as it provides an ever-changing backdrop to the drama of the boat launching.

Olympic Hospitality: Most anticipated hotel openings in 2020 (Q1 & Q2)
Kickstarting Tokyo Olympic, Hotel Designs takes a glance at some of the most significant hotel projects that are expected to complete in the next 12 months (edited by Hamish Kilburn). Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Hospitality fans can book Olympic Hospitality from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
If 2019 was anything to go by, then the next 12 months on the international hotel design and hospitality scene is going to be a jam-packed series of hotel openings in all corners of the globe. But with the industry churning out all kinds of hotels, it can be a challenge identifying the projects that will make the biggest impact.
In order to cut through the noise, the editorial team has sifted through the lists of projects on the boards in order to determine which among them are the most significant hotel projects that are slated to complete and open in Year 2020. We start our series by putting the spotlight on the hotels forecasted to the opening in Q1 and Q2.
Tumblr media
Fusion Suites Vung Tau (Q1)
Fusion’s latest hotel, Fusion Suites Vung Tau, is set to open in January in southern Vietnam’s popular coastal playground. The new 21-story property structures 171 well-appointed suites and apartments, an assembly of dining options, a spa, a yoga studio, and a rooftop infinity pool. The property offers opinions of the ocean, and counterparts the setting with playful insides dressed in sea green, ocean blue, and a wide range of ocean-inspired hues in between. The same sense of whimsy informs the building’s complex facade with pastel-colored glass panels that zig-zag upwards. For dining options, the hotel has the Fresh eatery, a rooftop bar, and market stalls in the vestibule. The property’s 12 treatment room spa is inspired by the sea and features signature therapies based around salt. Conveniently located in the heart of Vung Tau, the hotel is just a short trip by boat or road from Ho Chi Minh City.
Mama Shelter Paris West (Q1)
Following a successful soft opening, Mama Shelter’s second hotel in Paris, located in the eclectic 15th arrondissement, will officially open in January 2020. With cutting-edge design elements by up and coming French designer Dion & Arles, featuring the playful design and vibrant color palettes – guests can unwind in front of the open fire in the all-day restaurant or dine al fresco on the terrace, complete with its very own half-size basketball court. This will be Mama Shelter’s 12th property.
Hotel Brooklyn, Manchester (Q1)
Designed by Squid Inc – the team behind renowned Hotel Gotham – the long-awaited Hotel Brooklyn is scheduled to open in February 2020. The 189-key hotel is inspired by the New York Borough and chosen for its resonating similarities to Manchester, in terms of its buzzing industrial growth, as well as its strength of identity and culture.
Tumblr media
Riggs Washington D.C.
The long-awaited brainchild of The Brit List 2019 judge Jacu Strauss, Riggs Washington D.C. is expected to open its illustrious doors in February 2020. The famed designer has invoked the spirit of the building’s former bank while preserving and restoring much of the property’s original design features to reimagine the storied building for the modern traveler. The 181-room property features playful nods to the building’s rich past, drawing on the parallels between the activities that take place in banks and at hotels to offer something personal and serendipitous around every corner.
Atocha Hotel Madrid – Tapestry Collection by Hilton (Q1)
Tapestry Collection by Hilton is making its debut in EMEA and will soon land in two of the most iconic European cities.
Atocha Hotel Madrid will be the first hotel to join Hilton’s Tapestry Collection in Europe. It is located in the buzzing heart of Madrid, within walking distance from popular tourist attractions such as the Museo Reina Sofia and El Retiro Park.
Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour (Q1)
The new-build hotel features 152 modern guest rooms and suites suspended in a prime position just a short stroll to the CBD’s commercial & transport hub, the lively Darling Harbor precinct, and the International Convention Centre. The new hotel will feature a heated outdoor plunge pool with a vista across Sydney’s skyscraper as well as three restaurants & bars.
Tumblr media
W Ibiza/Baranowitz + Kronenberg
Conceived and designed by BARANOWITZ + KRONENBERG, W Ibiza is slated to open in April ahead of the Tokyo Olympic season. Located off the beaten track, the 167-key hotel will strike a pose on the palm-fringed beachfront of Santa Eulalia. As the only global brand on the island, the design brief was to marry the parallel realities of Ibiza with a magnetic pull that turns up the sass.
By opening up the public spaces to become a flexible social hub, the hotel becomes a place that nurtures human connections, and through the use of subtle levels creates touchable distance between each functional area. “The idea is that the energy descends into the unconventional pool area,” Alon Baranowitz told Hotel Designs in an exclusive interview.
As you move up levels, the lobby/lounge area becomes more reclined, but the open architecture scheme allows for a clever connection between all spaces. The hotel will open as part of Marriott International’s goal to add more than 30 new luxury hotels to its extensive worldwide portfolio in year 2020.
The Emerald House Lisbon, Curio Collection by Hilton (Q2)
One of the world’s most historic cities, known for its one-of-a-kind beauty and unique dining, will soon welcome The Emerald House Lisbon, Curio Collection by Hilton. The hotel will be located a few streets away from the historical districts of Chiado and Baixa, famous for their impressive plazas, vibrant restaurants, and boutique shops, making it ideal for curious travelers seeking unexpected and authentic experiences.
Tumblr media
Rosewood São Paulo (Q2)
Rosewood Hotels & Resorts will launch its first South American property situated in the center of São Paulo, featuring 151 guestrooms and 114 owners’ suites, two restaurants, including one located on a veranda overlooking hotel gardens and complemented by a bar and a caviar lounge. Entertaining accommodations will include two swimming pools with one rooftop pool and the other set amongst the redesigned grounds and a large spa and a fitness area.
Hotel visitors will also be able to entree an adjoining music studio, screening room and luxury retail stores within the development. Rosewood Hotels and Resorts are collaborating on this project with leading international figures such as the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel and designer Philippe Starck, to create a one-of-a-kind building.
The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon (Q2)
Set to be the first EDITION Hotel in Japan, the Tokyo EDITION Toranomon is slated to rise as part of the redevelopment of the former Pastoral Building, a mixed-use project comprising offices, residences, and a medical center. The 205-key hotel has been created in partnership with the globally renowned architect and designer Kengo Kuma, who designed the Tokyo Olympic National Olympic Stadium. It is expected to offer easy access to some of Tokyo’s most iconic sites, including the Tokyo Tower and the Tsukiji fish market. Within walking distance to the buzzing nightlife and restaurants of Roppongi, The Tokyo EDITION Toranomon will further raise the bar in entertainment and gastronomy for the area.
Voco Edinburgh (Q2)
Not only a capital city, but Edinburgh is also the leading centenary city in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a plethora of world-class attractions, sightseeing in Edinburgh is effortless, with visitors able to experience different centuries of history from street to street. IHG’s new voco brand is to open in Edinburgh on Torphichen Street, close to Edinburgh International Conference Centre. The hotel will feature all the usual comforts afforded by Voco properties, such as an indoor pool, eco-friendly bedding, a health club, an on-site bar.
Tumblr media
The Pig at Harlyn Bay, Cornwall (Q2)
The Pig brand is going from strength to strength. Following its latest opening in Bridge, Kent, The Pig brand is heading west coast of Cornwall. Inside a stunning Grade II-listed building, Harlan House, THE PIG-at Harlyn Bay is positioned near Padstow in Cornwall. Expected to open in June 2020, the hotel is just a short stroll from Harlyn beach, Constantine Bay beaches, Trevose Golf Club, and is also only a 10-minute drive to the sea-side honeypot of Padstow.
Ikos Andalusia (Q2)
Marking the brand’s arrival into Spain – and the first property outside Greece – Ikos Andalusia is slated to open in May 2020. The stylish resort is set amongst olive trees and has both modern features and local touches, such as traditional Moorish windcatchers perched atop its seven buildings. Individually commissioned pieces of art and colorful hand-painted tiles will be on display throughout the restaurants and guest rooms. A Cherry Blossom tree at Anaya restaurant, encircled by seating for guests to enjoy Asian dishes in an al-fresco setting, will be a particular stand-out feature.
Six bars will be situated around the resort’s lush gardens and pools serving cocktails arranged by award-winning Ikos mixologists, using branded international and local state of mind.
The resort will boast eight outdoor and indoor pools, including kids’ pools, spa pools, and adults-only pools, plus a number of private pools. Each of the outdoor pools will feature a cascading design overlooking the beach and the Mediterranean Sea.

Best New Luxury Cruises 2020: Bahamas, Japan, Subantartic
(Bloomberg) –The Caribbean still reigns supreme when it comes to cruising, but there’s a whole new world to explore. Classic ports such as the Bahamas are recovering, new itineraries are opening up in Japan for the 2020 Summer Olympics, and luxury options abound in the Seychelles. Here are eight places to prioritize in 2020.
Japan
Remember when Olympic organizers in Rio de Janeiro slept on cruise ships and called them “floating hotels”? Tokyo will do the same for its turn in the spotlight. From July 24 to Aug. 9, the city is chartering at least one large ship to serve as a floating hotel in response to a shortage of rooms on dry land. But you’d be better off going a more traditional route: Two of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.’s Shanghai-based ships, Spectrum of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas, will offer itineraries that overnight at Tokyo’s new terminal. Passengers with tickets can easily get to events and then sail on to other, less frenetic parts of the country.
Windstar Cruises LLC is betting that the summer’s television coverage will drum up tourism interest for Japan in general, so it’s skipping the marquee games and sending its 312-passenger, all-suite Star Breeze to the country for a series of temple- and garden-centric sailings this fall. But the most peaceful way to sail might be a three-night trip on Guntû, a 38-passenger design ship that’s like a floating ryokan on the Seto Inland Sea, complete with traditional open-air onsen baths in some of its suites.
The trip we’re most likely to book: Star Breeze 10-night sailing, from $3,599 per person.
The Bahamas
Typically cruise lines have relied heavily on the Bahamas. Not only is Nassau, the capital, a frequent port of call, but several companies have organized sailings throughout the commonwealth around islands that they own. In the last year, however, the roles have changed. After Hurricane Dorian devastated Grand Bahama (also a cruise port) and the less-visited Abaco islands, cruise companies helped deliver recovery supplies and made major donations. In the storm’s aftermath, they’re helping revitalize the entire Bahamian tourism economy.
Royal Caribbean is opening the second phase of its $250 million Perfect Day at CocoCay island in January. The Coco Beach Club includes the first overwater floating cabanas in the region. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. has boosted the offerings at its Great Stirrup Cay, a chic, South Beach-style beach oasis where you can shell out as much as $1,100 a day for a private, air-conditioned villa conveniently located near a Moet & Chandon bar. MSC Cruises’ recently opened, 95-acre Ocean Cay offers a more tranquil experience that focues on spa treatments and underwater activities in its protected marine reserve. And when adults-only Virgin Voyages debuts its first ship in March, every sailing will stop at a swanky private resort—think Ibiza or St-Tropez—developed by Resorts World Bimini.
The trip we’re most likely to book: A four-night itinerary on Virgin’s Scarlet Lady, from $2,750.
Kinsale, Ireland
Cruise lines are jumping on the DNA tourism trend, and harbor towns in West Cork, including the historic fishing town of Kinsale, are trying to get a piece of the pie. Promotional efforts have focused on attracting small expedition and boutique ships, and they’re paying off. Last year, French line Ponant sent one ship; this year it’s sending four. Ultraluxury line Seabourn has been sniffing around, too. Nearby attractions include a 3.7-mile trail around the ocean cliffs of the Old Head of Kinsale, where the Lusitania was sunk just offshore by a German U-boat in 1915. There’s also a star-shaped fort built by Charles II. And if you find through an ancestry search that you’re related to the notorious 18th-century pirate Captain Anne Bonny, Kinsale is said to be where she’s from.
The trip we’re most likely to book: A seven-night sailing from London to Portsmouth, from $3,830.
Read: Summer of Cruising
The Douro River, Portugal
Lisbon is a popular port, but attention has also shifted north to the quieter Portuguese city of Porto, famous for its sweet red fortified wine. It’s also becoming a popular starting point for cruises on the Douro River. Hillsides covered in terraced vineyards and historic quintas reflect 2,000 years of winemaking in the valley, with itineraries that include stops for tastings and time to cross the border toward the medieval city of Salamanca in northwestern Spain. Luxury tour operator Tauck Inc. and luxury brand Uniworld River Cruises are each debuting ships in the spring: Uniworld’s 100-passenger S.S. São Gabriel has butler-serviced suites, Douro-influenced decor, and locally sourced cuisine; Tauck’s 84-passenger MS Andorinha features an infinity-style pool, outdoor dining, and Balinese daybeds on the sun deck. Dinner at a family-owned wine estate near the sleepy village of Pinhão is included.
The trip we’re most likely to book: One-week Tauck Villages and Vintages itinerary, from $4,190.
Raja Ampat Islands
Far from the fancy resorts in Bali—in miles, scenery, and style—this Indonesian archipelago occupies an enviable position in the center of the Coral Triangle. Cruises here lead to fascinating cultural encounters, but the big attraction is the warm sea, home to about 75% of known coral species and about half of all the world’s marine tropical fish. Typically the best way to see it all has been on small dive boats, but upscale expedition cruise ships from Ponant and Australian line Coral Expeditions have recently moved in. Joining them is Aqua Expeditions, best known for its top-notch Amazon River sailings. It transformed a naval vessel into its first ocean ship, the 15-suite yacht Aqua Blu, on which it offers a culinary program designed by Aussie superstar chef Benjamin Cross and sailings that stretch through the winter.
The trip we’re most likely to book: One week on Aqua Blu, from $7,525.
Subantarctic Islands
These islands in the Southern Ocean, which are on the way to Antarctica from Australia and New Zealand, are protected nature preserves, where only researchers live among birds and marine mammals. On Macquarie Island, beaches may be covered with royal penguins and fur seals. The island also has a weird geologic feature: Some of its shores are piled up with exposed green rocks from the Earth’s mantle that look eerily like they’re covered in snakeskin. And the Snares, one of several chains of New Zealand islands, feature crested penguins endemic to the islands. Cruise passengers visit on zodiacs that hug the shoreline or make a landing for guided walks, all in places where the number of visitors is tightly controlled. Get here on expedition ships from Silversea Cruise Holding Ltd. or Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, which have new itineraries traversing the region.
The trip we’re most likely to book: A two-week cruise round trip from Dunedin (on New Zealand’s South Island) on Silver Explorer, from $13,950.
The Seychelles
Luxurious options abound in this Indian Ocean paradise off of East Africa. Crystal Cruises’ 62-passenger superyacht, Crystal Esprit, has suites with butler service and a private submarine. Ponant’s 184-passenger Le Bougainville has a snazzy, underwater Blue Eye Lounge, somewhat like a submarine with a panoramic view and where you can get a martini. But the real beauty of sailing here is taking tiny zodiacs to islands with uninhabited beaches, where you may snorkel among coral reefs or wander past tortoises in lush forests. Keep an eye out for the Seychelles warbler and other native birds, as well as Vallée de Mai, a rare palm forest little changed since prehistoric times.
The trip we’re most likely to book: A seven-night trip on Crystal Esprit, from $5,599.
Nile River
In January, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises launches the new 84-passenger, all-suite S.S. Sphinx, and because it will only sail in Egypt, its look will have an authentic sense of place. (Think Egyptian fabrics and artworks.) Similarly, Viking River Cruises in September adds the 82-passenger Viking Osiris, done up in Scandinavian design despite her Nubian name. Standard 12-day sailings on both ships start and end in Aswan, usually after a hotel stay in Cairo and a flight to Luxor. For DIY types, there are also four-night sailings to Aswan on Sanctuary Retreats’ elegant, recently upgraded, 64-passenger Sanctuary Nile Adventurer. Its shorter sailings aren’t packaged with pre- and post-cruise land experiences and are a little more flexible. This year, especially, a must-do is drinks on the terrace of Aswan’s Old Cataract Hotel, where Agatha Christie wrote parts of her 1937 novel Death on the Nile. Kenneth Branagh’s film based on the book will debut in theaters in the fall.
The trip we’re most likely to book: Four nights on the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, from $1,410.

Exhibition: Death in foreign waters - SS Mendi's last voyage
MPS van der Merwe writes: The SS Mendi tragedy is remembered by Iziko Museums of South Africa at the Iziko Maritime Centre in the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
Death in foreign waters – the last voyage of the SS Mendi
An exhibition called “The last voyage of the SS Mendi: Death in foreign waters” is on permanent display.
In August 1914, war was declared between Britain and Germany. South Africa, as a British Dominion, had a constitutional obligation to support the war. During the First World War, Britain transported thousands of troops from its Dominions to the war fronts. The Royal Navy did not have enough ships to do this, necessitating the British government to charter, or purchase merchant vessels and convert them into troop carriers.
SS MENDI
Type: Steel screw steamer Official Number (ON): 120875 Code Letters: HDGP Year Launched: 1905 Shipbuilder: A Stephen & Sons, Glasgow Owners: British & African Steam Navigation Co. Ltd Managers: Elder Dempster & Co. Ltd Port of Registry: Liverpool Flag: British Engine Builder: A Stephen & Sons, Glasgow Gross Tonnage: 4 230 Net Tonnage: 2 639
Dimensions: Length: 370.2 feet (112.84 metres) Breadth: 46.2 feet (14.08 metres) Depth: 23.3 feet (7.1 metres)
The Elder Dempster Line Karina Class steel screw steamer Mendi was such a vessel (‘Mendi’ is a tribe and dialect of Sierra Leone). The SS Mendi was engaged exclusively in the important Liverpool-West Africa trade until 1916, when she was chartered by the Ministry of Transport. The ship was then fitted out as a troop transport at Lagos in Nigeria, using fittings brought from Liverpool. Holds 1, 2 and 4, were each fitted with ‘tween decks on which the troops would be quartered, while Hold 3 was reserved for cargo.
After a voyage from Lagos to Durban, the SS Mendi, under the command of Captain Henry Arthur Yardley, made for Cape Town, where the 5th Battalion of the South African Native Labour Contingent (SANLC) was embarked. It comprised five officers, 17 non-commissioned officers, and 802 enlisted labourers, together with about 1 500 tons of government cargo. The labourers were quartered in the normal passenger accommodation. The crew was berthed forward, under the quarterdeck. All of the passenger accommodation was cramped and uncomfortable, particularly for those on the ‘tween decks.
The reality of war at sea was brought home to South Africans and especially Capetonians during this time. The Seiner Majestät Schiff Wolf (IV) – probably the greatest raider of them all – left Hamburg on 30 November 1916. The disguised and armed merchant raider, or auxiliary cruiser, was in Cape Town waters on Tuesday, 16 January 1917, when her destructive visit was to start.
On 16 January 1917, the SS Mendi left Cape Town at noon and formed up in convoy with five other merchant ships: the Union-Castle mailship RMS Kenilworth Castle (II) which was also carrying South African troops as well as gold bullion, the Orient Steam Navigation Co. Ltd passenger liner SS Orsova (l), the Oceanic Steam Navigation Co. Ltd (White Star Line) liner SS Medic, the Pacific & Orient Steam Navigation Co. passenger liner SS Berrima, and the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd liner SS Port Lyttelton. All these were carrying Australian troops. The six ships were escorted by the HMS Cornwall, an old British County Class cruiser armed with fourteen six-inch guns, and a speed of 24 knots.
Late that afternoon, the lookout on the Wolf (IV) reported seven vessels approaching from the direction of Cape Town. Korvettenkapitän Karl-August Nerger stood on the bridge flying the British flag as the convoy approached. His strict order stipulated that he was to avoid raiding action until he had laid most of his mines, and even from a distance he could tell that an attack would be suicidal folly. The warship was none other than HMS Cornwall, a 9 800 ton armoured cruiser that had sunk the German light cruiser Leipzig during the Battle of the Falkland Islands, and carried more than twice the fire power of the raider. The flag on the Wolf (IV) was lowered and recognised by the cruiser. The SS Mendi was on her final and catastrophic voyage. If the SMS Wolf (IV) had laid her mines earlier, the outcome for the convoy could have been disastrous.
SS DARRO
Type: Steel twin screw steamer Official Number (ON): 132026 Code Letters: JBCW Year Launched: 1912 Shipbuilder: Harland & Wolff Ltd, Belfast Owners: Imperial Direct Line Ltd Managers: Elder Dempster & Co. Ltd Port of Registry: Belfast Flag: British Engine Builder: Harland & Wolff Ltd, Belfast Gross Tonnage: 11 484 Net Tonnage: 7 291
Dimensions: Length: 500.7 feet (152.61 metres) Breadth: 62.3 feet (18.99 metres) Depth: 40.2 feet (12.25 metres)
On the afternoon of 20 February 1917, SS Mendi left Plymouth in the company of the Acorn Class (H Class) destroyer HMS Brisk (sunk by a mine on 2 October 1917). It was overcast with threatening mist, light winds and a smooth sea. At 17:30, lookouts were posted, and at 19:30, navigation lights shown. At 03:45 the following morning, conditions worsened, and an hour later the destroyer was alongside SS Mendi requesting her to increase speed, a request Captain Yardley decided not to heed immediately. Minutes later, at 04:57, the much bigger passenger and cargo ship SS Darro (launched in 1912, the same year as the RMS Titanic disaster, and by the same shipbuilders) under command of Captain Henry Winchester Stump, struck the SS Mendi with a heavy right-angled blow between No 1 and No 2 holds. The depth of the cut was about 20 feet (6 metres) below the waterline.
The SS Darro backed out of the opening shortly after striking the SS Mendi. Captain Yardley stopped the engines of the SS Mendi and ordered the boats lowered. Two boats floated and two capsized because they were overloaded. One boat was stoved in, and some were not launched. The boats had a combined capacity for only 298 men, but there were 89 crew and 824 men on board. The rest of the life-saving equipment consisted of life rafts, life rings and life jackets.
It became a struggle for life and survival, as many men were thrown into the water and many jumped into the sea rather than into the life rafts. Many SANLC men were crushed to death as the bow smashed into them where they lay on their blankets on the deck of the hold, and subsequent inrush of water, as they could not fall in at their muster stations. Panic and confusion in the darkness also played a part.
Releasing secured life rafts by untying instead of cutting the ropes wasted precious time. SANLC trooper Jacob Koos Matli saw an abandoned life raft still tied to a railing. Sixteen-year-old William Bonifacius Mathumetse was among the last to jump in the water. He splashed around helplessly, repeating the Lord’s Prayer, before struggling away and coming across two dead soldiers wearing life belts. He pulled them together to make a float, resting upon them.
The ship appears to have gone down by the head, about 20 minutes after the collision. Large numbers of the SANLC labourers and crew members ended up in the water rather than in the boats and life rafts. Trooper Matli and a crew member, William Brownlee, recalled the whirlpool that sucked down many men. A substantial amount of men subsequently died from hypothermia as the water temperature was reported to be eight degrees Celsius. The delay in assistance reaching them, and their inability to find or climb into life rafts, were other factors.
The HMS Brisk sent boats to search for survivors, and landed 137 survivors at Portsmouth after escorting the SS Darro to St Helen’s Road on the east coast of the Isle of Wight. The coal and general cargo steamer Sandsend operated by Pyman SS Co. Ltd (G Pyman & Co.), of West Hartlepool, arrived and her boats picked up 23 survivors (SS Sandsend was sunk by the German submarine UC 48 on 16 September 1917). They were subsequently transferred to the minesweeper HMS Balfour before being landed at Newhaven in Sussex.
One raft apparently made it safely to the Dorset coast with a few survivors aboard. Ndebele-speaker, Alpheus Moliwa Zagubi, and two SANLC companions, appear to have been the last survivors rescued.
The SS Darro was indeed a ship of shame. The Board of Trade Inquiry found that although the master of the SS Darro, Captain Stump, acted appropriately towards his own vessel, he had failed to render assistance to the SS Mendi. No boat was even sent to investigate or assist – and they saw two boats and a raft with survivors coming alongside. They could also hear the shouts of men in the water until about 06:30. There was nothing physically preventing rescue operations. The Inquiry concluded that the collision was caused by the excessive speed of the SS Darro and the failure of Stump to use sound signals. It was also concluded that the loss of the SS Mendi and those on board had been caused by the master of the SS Darro. His master’s certificate was therefore suspended for 12 months.
A faction within the Board of Trade differed with the findings. They were of the opinion that Stump got off lightly. His master’s certificate should have been cancelled rather than suspended. In one memo, Stump was described as “a standing menace to seafarers”.
In the book, Macqueen’s Legacy Ships of the Royal Mail Line, Stuart Nicol, makes the following mention of the Darro: “Darro was involved in a catastrophic accident in February, 1917. Its failure to appear in the Company’s war history was perhaps because it was not an act of war but, for all that the wartime ban on lights probably contributed. She was in the English Channel in foggy conditions when she was in collision with Elder Dempster’s Mendi. The latter vessel carrying South Africans sank in a few minutes and over 650 lives were lost. I have not seen reports of Darro’s losses and damage, but she was back in service by May, 1917. ”
The wreck of the SS Mendi lies roughly 11 nautical miles south-west of St Catherine’s Point on the Isle of Wight in 35-40 metres of water. The site was found in 1945 by sonar, and in 1953 a new survey resulted in an improved position of the site. In 1974, Mr Martin Woodward dived on the site, and his subsequent investigations led him to conclude that it was the wreck of the SS Mendi.
The British-based company, Wessex Archaeology, recorded the site in more detail, as did GrownUPSAC, a branch of the University of Portsmouth Sub-Aqua Club in July 2005. The SS Mendi is remembered in various ways:
SM Bennet Ncwana instituted the Mendi Memorial Club after the First World War, and kept the memory of the SS Mendi alive by an annual commemoration, Mendi Day.
In 1936 the Mendi Memorial Bursary fund was established to sponsor promising black pupils.
Several memorials in South Africa and abroad were erected over the years to commemorate the Mendi tragedy:
Hollybrook Memorial, Hollybrook Cemetery, Southampton
Bokleni Memorial, Newtimber, West Sussex
Delville Wood Memorial, Delville Wood, Belgium
Mendi Memorial and Garden of Remembrance, Avalon Cemetery, Soweto
Mendi Memorial, Atteridgeville, Pretoria
Mendi Memorial, New Brighton, Port Elizabeth
Mendi Memorial, Mthatha, Eastern Cape
Mendi Memorial, Maseru, Lesotho
Mendi Memorial, Gaborone, Botswana
Mendi Memorial, University of Cape Town
Mendi Memorial, Nyandeni, near Port St Johns
The Mendi tragedy is also remembered by the SA Navy in the naming of two of their ships, the strike craft SAS Isaac Dyobha, and the SAS Mendi, one of the new corvettes.
The Order of Mendi for Bravery is awarded to South African citizens who have displayed extraordinary acts of bravery.
The Mendi tragedy is remembered by Iziko Museums of South Africa at the Iziko Maritime Centre in the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. An exhibition called “The last voyage of the SS Mendi: Death in foreign waters” is on permanent display.
The exhibition consists of panels with images and text discussing the war, the SANNC, the SS Mendi, the tragedy and struggle and survival. Other panels are devoted to remembrance of the ship and the wreck today. Three monitors relay audio-visual documentaries regarding the tragedy and remembrance of the tragedy. There are also a few objects on display coming from the wreck of the SS Mendi, as well as a objects related to the First World War.
It is heartening that this tragedy, since 1994, now forms part of main stream history in South Africa and that the war heroes of the SS Mendi are remembered and honoured. South Africa must never forget them.
