Lidded Vessel
Yoruba peoples, Owo group 17th–18th century
This spectacular ivory vessel was once the treasured possession of an "olowo," the ruler of the Yoruba kingdom of Owo in present-day southern Nigeria. Owo rose to regional prominence in the eighteenth century through trade and conquest, and became one of the largest states in West Africa at that time. It had close political ties to the Benin kingdom some seventy miles to the southeast. Much of Owo's courtly culture, including titles, costumes, and prestige sculpture, reflect a close association between the two important political and cultural centers. The vast and terrible powers of the "olowo" are expressed in the imagery of this work by four figural groups united by a python, an important symbol of royalty. Prominent and pervasive mudfish and crocodile motifs evoke the king's praise names, or "oriki," that liken him to a vast ocean into which all rivers flow and whose unfathomable depths hold potent secrets and supernatural abilities. It also emphasizes the king's intimate relationship with Olokun, god of the sea, who brings wealth and fertility to his adherents. The imagery inscribed throughout the surface of this vessel suggests the "olowo's" ability to span multiple realms—terrestrial and aquatic, human and divine.

https://punchng.com/gunmen-disguise-as-worshippers-massacre-over-35-in-ondo-church/
The mass burial for them is being streamed right now on Nigerian news networks, presided over by the Catholic Diocese. The words he said that stuck with me is that "this is nonsense" and he's absolutely right; it's utter nonsense. He just doesn't realize how truly nonsense it is.
This attack was north vs. south. My religion versus theirs. It's people killing and being killed over their preferred flavor of bed time story.
Do not let anyone tell you that religion is anything other than human barbarism dressed up mildly better.
There was pandemonium at Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo,  the headquarters of the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State as gunmen attacked the church on Sunday. The attack on the church in Owo,  the hometown of the state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, came barely a week after the Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Bishop Samuel Kanu-Uche, was kidnapped in Abia State by gunmen the priest later identified as Fulani youths. It was learnt the gunmen, who attacked the Catholic church, arrived at the premises, which is less than 200 metres from the palace of the Olowo of Owo, at 12pm when the Sunday mass was being rounded off. The PUNCH gathered that worshippers, mostly children and women, were killed in the attack, by gunmen, who were said to have thrown an improvised explosive device before they started shooting sporadically.
OWO, ONDO STATE, NIGERIA — Nigerian officials have blamed the terrorist group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) for an attack on a church in the country's southwest that killed at least 40 people. Sunday's shooting at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo was the first linked to ISWAP in Nigeria's southwest, raising fears that terrorism in the country is spreading. Nigerian Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola spoke to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, soon after a National Security Council meeting. He said authorities had monitored the situation for days and that "from all indications, they're zeroing in on the Islamic State of West African Province.”

Do not let anyone tell you that religion is anything other than human barbarism dressed up mildly better.
Unfortunately, we keep getting example after example of exactly this. Each of them doubling down by calling upon their god to help them defeat, or protect them from, the other, with divine right on their side.

Grandmother who set son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren ablaze in Ondo, is dead
Tumblr media
The 75-year-old grandmother, Iforiti Olowo, who set her son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren ablaze in Akure South local government area of Ondo State, is dead. It was gathered that the septuagenarian, who sustained some degrees of burns in the fire, passed away at the weekend in an undisclosed hospital. It would be recalled that the woman, who lived with her son at Aponmu community, along Ondo-Akure road, set the house ablaze while the family was asleep. Some neighbours broke into the house through the window, rescued her son, Victor Oloro; wife, Rachael; and children, Toluwani and Blessing. They were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo for medical attention. Unfortunately, Victor and his wife gave up the ghost while their children are said to be receiving treatment. The aged woman, Iforiti, while speaking with journalists after the incident, confessed that she burnt her son and his family, claiming that they were starving her. A police investigator in the case also confirmed Mrs. Olowo's death. “Yes, she is dead. She has been moved to the morgue.” the police source said. A resident, who spoke to Daily Trust under condition of anonymity, also confirmed the development on Tuesday night. “We have been told now that the woman has given up the ghost," she said.
