Week 5: Here We Go Again
I am writing this on a scenic train ride back from Switzerland, in denial that I am halfway done with my trip. Next week’s blog will center around my takeaways so far, but this week’s will feature the beaches of Greece and the mountains of Switzerland.
This past weekend, I went with 3 friends to adventure in greece. We caught an early morning flight out of Naples, requiring another Thursday night Naples stay and another 4am wake up. Our airbnb was close to the airport, security was a breeze, and before we knew it we were in the clouds above the Adriatic sea. We split a taxi to our airbnb and had a smooth check in. As it was only early afternoon, we braved the heat wave and went out into Athens to explore the iconic Acropolis. It was even more impressive in real life than the pictures. I found myself constantly marveling at the engraving and details, preserved despite the age of the pillars. My favorite part was the Temple of Athena near the top of the slope where an olive tree still stands at the fabled site of a battle between Athena and Poseidon for patronage of the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(First pic of the temple of Athena featuring the olive tree, second pic of me in front of the Parthenon (it was very windy at the top))
Once we finished exploring the acropolis, we set off in search of dinner. We found an authentic Greek restaurant where I had what might’ve been the best meal of my life. Turns out, I am a huge fan of Greek food (tzatziki sauce in particular) . For the rest of the night, we wandered around and browsed a bit in some shops before heading back to our airbnb. To our delight, Mama Mia is on Greek Netflix (hence the title of this blog). Obviously it was a must-watch, especially since we had ferry tickets to an island for the next morning. Said ferry turned out to be much bigger than the ferries along the Amalfi coast; this one had three stories, cushioned seats, and a fully equipped snack bar. We went to the island of Aegina since it was the closest (and hence cheapest) ferry from the main Athens port. I fell in love almost immediately upon docking. There was just something so relaxing about being there, the town just felt calm and unhurried. I thought the water near Sorrento was stunning, but it paled in comparison to the vivid, aqua blue of the island beaches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Both pictures show the wonderfully clear, blue water along the rocky coast)
We spent nearly the whole day beach hopping, with a little window shopping before it was time to board the ferry again. I was quite sad to leave as swimming and exploring are two of my favorite activities, both of which the island was perfect for. We stopped for some street food (once again delicious) on the way back to our place, settling in for a relatively early night to make up for all the crack-of-dawn wake ups. In the morning, we had some time before needing to head to the airport and decided to visit the Olympic stadium. As a current athlete (and former track athlete), it was both an awe-inspiring and humbling experience to be in the stadium. An audio tour was included with our 5 euro student ticket and I very much enjoyed learning about the history and meaning of the stadium. We even got to walk through the entrance tunnel, leading to a hall with the torches and posters from all the modern Olympic games. Especially with the summer Olympics so close to starting, it was an unforgettable experience (and I can say I ran in the Olympic stadium, even if it was just one lap).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(First picture at the end of the Olympic stadium showcasing the Olympic rings, second picture of my standing on the podium near the front of the stadium).
After the stadium, we grabbed a quick lunch and went on to the airport for what should’ve been a quick trip back to Naples. Unfortunately, our 1 ½ hour flight ended up being delayed over 5 hours. Fortunately, we still made it back to Sorrento at a reasonable hour, ready for the week ahead. Most of the week was uneventful with most of my time spent preparing for my final presentation and final exam in Marine Biology, which I took on Thursday. I felt confident in the exam but was sad the class was over as I very much enjoyed learning about the oceans I love to swim in so much. I did not have much time to dwell, however, as I left from class straight to the train station to start my trip up to Switzerland! I met up with one of my friends in Rome, and from there we took about 7 different trains before arriving in the cozy mountain town of Zermatt,Switzerland Friday evening. It was nice to get a break from the heat of southern Italy; I needed to wear a long sleeve for the first time on this trip! That night, we had delicious fondue and did a little chocolate shopping (nothing beats Swiss chocolate). Saturday morning, we set off on one of the most scenic hikes I have gone on. Aptly named, 5 Lakes Hike brought us to 5 separate lakes, with 360 degree mountain views the whole way. My breath was constantly being taken away by the mountains and I must’ve taken at least 100 pictures during the hike alone. We timed it almost perfectly, as we got caught in a mountain rain cloud just as we were finishing up the hike.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(A few of the many, many mountain pictures now in my camera roll. The first two are at different points on the trail, the last two are 2/5 of the lakes)
The rest of Saturday and Sunday morning were spent exploring the town, souvenir shopping, and (more) chocolate eating. I’m now on my overnight train headed back toward southern Italy and though this weekend had by far the longest travel time, it was 100% worth it and is my favorite trip so far. I am sad to be leaving Switzerland, but excited as this next week is the start of the second session, meaning new classes and new roommates to meet. See you next week!

Intro Blog :)
Hi! My name is Sophie Jones and I just finished my freshman year at The University of South Carolina. I am an exercise science major and psychology minor currently on a pre-pt track. I am from New York City and I hope to eventually find a career working among professional athletes as a physical therapist. I love to bake, travel, and go on runs. The thing I am most looking forward to on the trip is the guided walking food tour. I love food and trying new cuisines, so I would love to taste all the greatness of Greek food while also learning about their traditions and how I can hopefully incorporate their diet into my own at home. I can’t wait to visit the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens and get to learn all about the history of the Olympic Games while touring the different facilities too. Super excited to meet all of you and have a great time in Greece together, I am counting down the days!

Week 6 - Terminator
The Terminator was released in 1984. The poster for the film featured a powerful and menacing character armed with a gun. This imagery is designed to attract action movie enthusiasts and fans of the sci-fi genre, suggesting a combination of intense action, suspense, and futuristic elements. The poster's visual impact effectively communicates the tone and genre of the film, capturing the attention of potential viewers.
Tumblr media
The trailer for the film further enhanced the tone, genre, and overall feel of the movie. Additionally, providing a glimpse into the personality of the iconic character the Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. It revealed his menacing presence, stoic demeanor, and relentless pursuit of his target. This portrayal made the Terminator an unforgettable and iconic figure in cinema.
youtube
Surprisingly Terminator shared similar traits to older movies such as Deep Red from 1975. Both movies revolve around protagonists thrust into dangerous and enigmatic worlds, navigating treacherous landscapes, uncovering secrets, and confronting unexpected challenges. Furthermore, the films establish suspenseful and tense atmospheres, captivating audiences through atmospheric cinematography, intricate suspense sequences, and haunting musical scores.
Tumblr media
The film Deep Red follows a musician who becomes entangled in a series of gruesome murders, while Terminator centers around a regular person targeted by a relentless cyborg from the future. Despite their different backgrounds, both protagonists are thrust into unknown circumstances and must adapt to perilous situations. Audiences are captivated as they follow these characters through their hazardous journeys, developing a sense of empathy and engagement.
Furthermore, Deep Red is renowned for its atmospheric cinematography, intricate suspense sequences, and haunting musical score. The film skillfully employs visual and auditory techniques to immerse viewers in a heightened state of suspense throughout the narrative. Similarly, James Cameron's Terminator captivates audiences through relentless pursuit and action-packed sequences. The film's fast-paced nature and constant danger effectively build tension, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.
At the same time the Terminator was released the Summer Olympics were also being held in Los Angeles. These Olympics served as a significant event in sports history, showcasing exceptional athletic performances and promoting international goodwill and competition. The juxtaposition of the film's intense action, suspense, and futuristic elements with the celebration of human achievement during the Olympics creates an intriguing contrast, reflecting the diverse interests and experiences of audiences during that time.
Post-release, the scholarly resource "Terminator" from the National Film Preservation Board offered an insightful analysis of the film's historical and cultural significance. The document recognizes The Terminator as an enduring icon of popular culture, spawning numerous sequels, spin-offs, and imitations while establishing Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Hollywood action star and James Cameron as a visionary filmmaker. The resource focuses on the film's innovative use of practical effects and stunts, which contributed to the creation of a realistic and relentless cyborg through animatronics, prosthetics, and creative camera work. While the argument presented in the resource successfully showcases the film's impact, it overlooks potential criticisms regarding the glorification of violence and the portrayal of unstoppable characters.
In addition to the resource's emphasis on practical effects, it is worth noting that the integration of CGI in certain scenes played a significant role in enhancing the visual impact of Terminator and pushing the boundaries of filmmaking techniques at the time. Furthermore, the writer in the resource could explore the film's thematic elements and underlying social commentary. For instance, the examination of technology, humanity, and the potential dangers of an increasingly automated future would provide a more comprehensive analysis of the film's significance beyond its surface-level contributions to the genre and industry.

Today is our last day staying in the International Olympic Academy! I am here to tell you about a presentation we listened to by Prof. Konstantinos Georgiadis.
Tumblr media
He taught us about “Sports Mega-Events, Legacies, and Impacts.” To prepare for the Olympics, there are several steps in terms of hosting and administration. The bid file must be prepared, efforts to get the preliminary events ready need to occur, testing of events, intense final arrangements, and post olympic use of the facilities are decided. There are numerous roles and stakeholders required to organize the games. For example, the athletes, spectators, sponsors, IOC, and media all contribute to the organizing committee. When it comes to finalizing where the games are held, factors like political consensus, citizens acceptance/involvement, and good cooperation with international organizations are all considered in this process. Prof. Konstantinos went into discussion about various types of legacies related to the olympics such as tourism/economy, infrastructure, sport facilities, urban/natural environment, and socio-cultural. He then presented us with 2 research questions in which he went into further detail: “We’re the Olympic Games of Athens a good investment for the city and the country?” and “Did the Olympic Games of Athens create a sustainable legacy in the city?”
Tumblr media
The Panathenaic Stadium was the first step of the modern Olympics in Athens. Construction began in 1895 and the games were held in 1896. The photo shows that the stadium was half marble and half wooden seats in order to hold the games in time. The stadium was not fully finished until 1903. Athens views this as a “negative economic legacy” at the time because it was a big financial investment. Despite this “negative” aspect, the Panathenaic Stadium is mainly seen as a “positive cultural legacy!”
Tumblr media
The Olympics are not only about sports, it is also about education. Below are charts representing the knowledge among Athens citizens regarding the 2004 Olympics. By hosting the games in 2004, Athens reaped various benefits such as renovations to transportation, media centers, and Olympic villages. The most complex construction was the building of the roof over the stadium, OAKA, that we visited earlier in our trip! Since cities that host the Olympic Games undergo major positive changes and extensive construction, lots of actions are taken to preserve wildlife and maintain healthy natural environments. For example, all of the trees were preserved and replanted during the construction of OAKA in Athens. The list of legacies and benefits for cities that host the games is fascinating. One last major legacy of the Olympics that Prof. Konstantinos highlighted today was the Masters Program that has been developed for Olympic studies, which we have been fortunate enough to learn about here at the International Olympic Academy!

Week 3 Artistic Swimming
Artistic Swimming - Full Team Event from Rio 2016
The Maria Lenk Aquatic Center hosted synchronized swimming competitions from August 15 to 20 at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. A total of 104 competitors participated in two medal events, the women's duet and the women's team. With the exception of the host country Brazil, which represented the Pan American continent, the best-ranked NOC in each of the five continental championships was guaranteed a place in the Games, while the remaining NOCs competed for the three highest-ranked slots at the Olympic Qualification Tournament. the best-ranked NOC in each of the five continental championships without a qualified team was guaranteed a spot in the duet, while the other eleven top-ranked NOCs were chosen via the Olympic Qualification Tournament. Each of the eight NOCs that had already qualified for the team event had to choose two synchronized swimmers to form a duet . On Friday, Russia earned its fifth consecutive gold medal in the synchronized swimming team routine final at the Rio 2016 Olympics, with China taking silver and Japan taking bronze. Russia's success was so well conducted that they earned an impressive score of 196.1439, more than three points higher than the runner-up, China. Because of Russia's victory, the United States remains the only other nation to have ever won gold in the synchronized swimming team routine event, which occurred in Atlanta in 1996. Despite the fact that each of the eight finalists impressed in their final performance, Russia emerged as the clear winner, with their execution and artistic impression eclipsing all others in the competition. Ukraine came within inches of claiming the top spot on the podium, but Japan snatched third place and their first team routine medal since Athens 2004 in the final result of the session. Their final routine was enough to round off a final score of 189.2056, just a full point ahead of the Ukrainians, who were looking for a medal spot with a score of 188.6080. Russia's win also gave the country its 13th gold of Rio 2016, putting a positive spin on an otherwise bleak Games for the country, which saw all of its track and field athletes barred from competing after a state-funded doping scheme was exposed. Anthony Becht, a former New York Jets tight end, was among those watching the activities at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center, and he couldn't help but express his appreciation for those competing. Russia performed flawlessly, as one might expect from a country that has dominated this area for nearly two decades. Japan was appropriately pleased with their bronze medal, and the Female Coaching Network said that their third-place finish was due to long-term tactical planning. After it was reported that the Japanese team had done enough to win bronze, the entire Japanese team burst into tears, while the Russians seemed to be completely unconcerned about their gold. Another Games, another gold for Russia in team synchronized swimming, where not a single foot or splash was misplaced on the way to a fifth consecutive podium finish.

A HISTORY LESSON WE SHOULD NEVER FORGET!!!
Here are some REAL facts - backed up by historical data, not conspiracies or conjecture. Remember, ALL Muslims believe in jihad (religious war) to be fought until everyone in the world is converted to Islam. They will be your friends, according to the Quran teachings, until there comes the right time to "convert" you.
Facts are Facts So if you are offended - blame History!
The War started in the 7th Century and lasted through the 17th Century. Many will contend it never stopped; the Facts below are Historically correct. That is why many of us choke when we hear someone say we will defeat or contain these Islamic Terrorists in a few years, or even "30 Years" as has been stated by Leon Panetta. If the latest batch of Murders, Beheadings, and Killing of Innocent Christians has at all shocked you, it is time for you to read this Compilation of Historical Facts about the Intense Hatred that Muslims have for ANY and ALL who are “NOT” Muslims! WE ARE THE STUPID In 732 A.D., the Muslim Army, which was moving on Paris, was defeated and turned back at Tours, France, by Charles Martell. In 1571 A.D, the Muslim Army/Navy was defeated by the Italians and Austrians as they tried to cross the Mediterranean to Attack Southern Europe in the Battle of Lepanto In 1683 A.D, the Turkish Muslim Army, attacking Eastern Europe, was finally defeated in the Battle of Vienna by German and Polish Christian Armies. This Nonsense has been going on for 1,400 years! The SAD thing is that more than half of all Politicians do not even know any of this. If these battles had not been won, we would most likely be speaking Arabic. And Christianity could be Non-existent. Judaism certainly would NOT exist! Reality check: A lot of Americans have become so Insulated from Reality that they Imagine America can Suffer defeat without any inconvenience to themselves. Think back: The following events are true historical facts. It has been many years since 1968, but History keeps repeating itself. 1. In 1968, Robert Kennedy was Shot and Killed by a Muslim Male. 2. In 1972, at the Munich Olympics, Israeli Athletes were Kidnapped and Massacred by Muslim Males. 3. In 1972, a Pan Am 747 was Hijacked and eventually Diverted to Cairo where a fuse was lit on Final Approach. Shortly after Landing, it was Blown up by Muslim Males. 4. In 1973, a Pan Am 707 was Destroyed in Rome With 33 People Killed, when it was Attacked with Grenades by Muslim Males. 5. In 1979, the United States Embassy in Iran was taken over by Muslim Males. 6. During the 1980s, several Americans were kidnapped in Lebanon by Muslim Males. 7. In 1983, the United States Marine Barracks in Beirut was Blown up by Muslim Males. 8. In 1985, the Cruise Ship Achille-Lauro was Hijacked, and a 70-year-old American Passenger was Murdered and thrown Overboard in his Wheelchair by Muslim Males. 9. In 1985, TWA Flight 847 was Hijacked in Athens, and a United States Navy Diver, who was trying to rescue passengers – was murdered by Muslim Males. 10. In 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed by Muslim Males. 11. In 1993, the World Trade Center was Bombed for the First Time by Muslim Males. 12. In 1998, the United States Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were Bombed by Muslim Males. 13. On 09/11/01, FOUR Airliners were Hijacked. Two of the Planes were used as Missiles to take down the World Trade Centers... One-Plane Crashed into the United States Pentagon, and the other Plane was Diverted and Crashed by the Passengers. Thousands of People were Killed by Muslim Males. 14. In 2002, the United States fought a war in Afghanistan against Muslim Males. 15. In 2002, reporter Daniel Pearl was Kidnapped and Beheaded by you guessed it - a Muslim Male. (Plus two other American Journalists who had just recently been Beheaded.) 16. In 2013, the Boston Marathon Bombing resulted in Four Innocent People, including a Child, being Killed and 264 other People injured by Muslim Males.
NO, I really do not see a pattern here to Justify Profiling. Do YOU? So, to ensure we Americans never Offend Anyone - particularly Fanatics intent on Killing US - Airport Security Screeners will NO longer be allowed to Profile certain People. So, ask yourself: "Just how stupid are we?!?!" Have Americans completely lost their minds or just their "Power of Reason?" As the writer of the Award-Winning story "Forrest Gump" so aptly put it, "Stupid is as Stupid does." You now have the opportunity to send this on to other Email Contacts. Please do that! Or you can just sit back, keep complaining, and do nothing. As Barack Obama said in his book: "Nothing sounds as Beautiful as the Muslim Evening Prayers from the Tower."

DIVE!! Book 4 Chapter 11-TAKE OFF
Here it is!! The final chapter of the series!! Thanks to everyone who followed it until now!! I hope you enjoy the journey of the MDC and their supporters. When I first decided to try translating this series after seeing the key visual for the anime, I never thought I’d get so attached to these kids and adults. (also can’t believe how long it took)
Translating this series helped me learn a lot about Japanese, though I’m still nowhere near fluent. It also opened my eyes to all those Japanese youth novels out there that won’t ever get translated unless they get an anime or have a cute girl on the cover or something. Also this is the first sports story that I actually didn’t get bored with.
Thanks again for reading!

On a certain day in January of 2000, in a corner of a restaurant at Narita Airport that overlooked the runway, an athlete and a coach were picking at their sukiyaki.
Although they finished their check-in procedure two hours before the flight, there was still time before they had to get to the boarding gate. It was a familiar scene of people getting their last chance of eating Japanese food as well as killing time. If there was just one element that wasn’t seen very much, it was that only one of the two men with an age difference between them was hanging their head incredibly sadly.
“So? Have you eaten? Are you full? Don’t ever forget that aftertaste, and think over it when you’re over there. Don’t forget the shirataki noodles and the meat soup that soaks into them. Don’t forget the reserved deliciousness of the tofu. There’s only steaks and popcorn over there, but you must live healthily.”
“You might say that in the Edo period, but nowadays there’s Japanese food all over the world.”
Shibuki, with an amazed look on his face, calmly admonished Ooshima, who was acting like he was on his deathbed.
“First of all, even though half a year would just seem like an instant, that’s your blessing for me?”
“No, half a year is half a year. It is definitely longer than a moment.”
“But, it’s shorter than a lifetime.”
“Well, at most, I can polish my sukiyaki making skills during that time.”
“More than that, could you please add to your repertoire of dishes?”
The two sighed at the same time and looked out the window.
Massive metal masses could be seen taking off one after the other from the runway through the window. Just like a pair of scissors cutting up a light blue cloth, they cut through the clear sky with their rigidly spread wings.
“I wonder if Tomo is above the Pacific Ocean right now.” Ooshima murmured as he followed those flights with his eyes. “Isn’t it a few hours to New Zealand? I can’t believe it became a near miss with your departure. Even though we could have met at the airport if we were just slightly earlier, how disappointing.”
“You’re so naïve.”
“Huh?”
“That woman purposely decided to prepare my passport on the same day.”
“Coach Asaki did? How come?”
“She’s that kind of person.”
Shibuki clenched his knees on his knees.
“Or rather…that bad-natured woman was doing whatever it took to stir up the mood in that place. Even though she could have just said at the beginning that the chairman promised that he’ll give the money even if I didn’t win, but just clear 600 points, she shamelessly lied about it.”
“Now now, that was probably a way to get you fired up. First of all, thanks to the bad-natured woman’s negotiations, the way to Florida has opened.”
It was Ooshima’s turn to admonish a trembling Shibuki, and then he glanced at his watch.
“It’s almost time. Come, let’s go. Go, and try out your possibilities. Since I hate the idea of parting at the departure counter, I’ll see you off here while drinking a beer.”
As he said that, Ooshima took the menu and perused it from the top meaninglessly. It was almost as though he was afraid of meeting eyes with Shibuki.
Shibuki also silently bowed to match it, and stood from his seat with one small travelling bag on his shoulder. His larger luggage was already sent by ship in advance to the homestay introduced by Mr. Ben Bradley. For the moment, even if he only had his ticket to Florida and his passport, he felt like he could fly anywhere.
“Bye.”
At the moment Shibuki quietly said that and tried to leave, Ooshima suddenly put down his menu with a flop, saying “By the way,”
“Your beautiful girlfriend didn’t come and see you off, huh.”
Shibuki stopped his feet and carelessly responded.
“She hates the very idea of parting at the airport, not to mention at the departure counter. Also, she seemed to be busy preparing to come to Tokyo.”
“Coming to Tokyo?”
“She said something about studying foot massaging in Tokyo starting from April for a year…it seems that she’s going to breathe a new wind into the community of old people in Tsugaru.”
“Foot massage? How plain.”
“The grandpas and grandmas seem to be in pain, but since she’s enthusiastic about saying that she’s finally found what she wanted to do, isn’t that okay then?”
“But, there’s swarms of bad lovers in Tokyo. Half a year without you would be very long.”
Shibuki smiled at Ooshima, who was half-jealously teasing him, and flapped the ticket gripped between his fingers.
“A swan couple stays a pair for their whole lifetime until one of them dies.”
At the same time Shibuki was looking down at the Pacific Ocean from the jumbo jet that was carrying him, Kayoko’s angry voice was ringing out as usual at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center.
“One more time! Red’s takeoff was too late!”
“Green! Watch Red’s rotations more closely!”
“The two of you aren’t breathing in sync at all!”
“Do you guys think you can go to Sydney with this kind of incompetence!?”
When a ten-minute break finally came after the merciless training, Youichi and Camel…er rather, Red Yamada, flopped their bodies down together.
On the dimly lit poolside, two vivid points stood out. A brilliant contrast of red and green swim trunks—.
“Damn it, that woman should have just quietly gone back to America after all…”
Mustering the last of his strength to curse her, Youichi shut his eyes briefly, sinking into the valley of unconsciousness.
For three seconds, or thirty seconds, or maybe three minutes.
In that valley bottom protected by pure tranquility, at that moment, Youichi suddenly thought he saw Shibuki flying over the sky to a new world, and Tomoki treading onto another foreign country.
His father, Keisuke, should be next to Tomoki. The FINA World Cup, said to be the preliminaries to the Olympics. For Keisuke, who was unexpectedly selected as his accompanying coach, this was probably his last job in the world of winning and losing.
Those who continued to dive.
Those who quit.
Those who continued while choosing new ways to engage in it.
At the point where those paths intersected, the current him was there.
“I don’t get life at all.”
Opening his eyes with a snap, Youichi responded to Red, who was still breathing wildly beside him.
“You and I are aiming for Sydney by doing synchronized diving. It seems that even the JASF staff didn’t know that old man Maebara had ambitions for synchro diving. Well, it certainly not a bad view of things, or maybe I should say that old geezer really is cunning, that he really does have a medal fetish.”
When he looked towards him as he was saying that, Red was grimly staring in the direction of the day after tomorrow.
“What is it?”
“No, this way isn’t good enough, it doesn’t suit me at all.”
“Synchro diving?”
“Uh huh. Synchro diving’s a sport that prizes synchronicity first and foremost. In other words, the harmony of the two people is the deciding factor for victory or defeat. As far as that’s concerned, doesn’t that mean red and green swimming trunks aren’t good enough at all?”
“Hey, wait. Aren’t you the one who decided to try red and green? You said that it would be ‘Christmas-cool’.”
“But anyways, as a representative of Japan, I want to cherish and emphasize Japanese tastes. You know, like the soul of wabi sabi, (1) the beauties of nature, and the Japanese spirit… Well, here’s an idea, what do you think of the two-tone of pink and green, like sakuramochi?” (2)
“…You just want to go back to being Pinky, don’t you.”
Youichi lifted his upper body up while pressing his hand to his forehead.
At that moment, Kayoko’s intensely angry voice flew from the opposite shore of the poolside once again.
“You two, even though I said ten minutes you’ve been dawdling there forever. If you have no motivation, then just quit synchro diving and stick yourselves to the poolside for the rest of your lives. Forever, till you have grandkids!”
Good grief, Youichi and Red thought as they lifted their heavy backs up and headed for the top of the stairs once again.
Youichi thought that going to Sydney with synchro diving would be a meaningful step towards the crucial performance that would appear in the future. When he stood alone on top of the dragon four years later, his Sydney Olympic experience would surely be a great asset.
But, the fact that this guy of all people was his synchro partner…
And, the fact that that woman was the specialist coach that the JASF sent…
“No no, you didn’t do it at all! Both of your paces when climbing up the steps aren’t in sync at all. I’m laughing my head off at that synchronization, ho-ho-ho!”
With his back to Kayoko’s loud laughter, Youichi ascended the steps with Red again, and unwittingly let loose a feeble mutter from his mouth.
“Aah, I wanna go to Athens soon.”
At the same time Youichi and Red were beginning to show a splendid combination while talking about this or that, across the Southern Sea at Auckland Airport in New Zealand, a passenger plane carrying the Japanese water sports team participating in the FINA World Cup.
“Until the plane has completely stopped, please wait with your seatbelts on and without standing from your seats.”
As they listened to the announcement with a strange accent, Keisuke spoke to Tomoki, who was looking out the window curiously.
“We’ve finally arrived. How do you feel?”
“I feel really heavy and sleepy and full.”
“Well, after ten days your body should gradually acclimatize itself. How is your state of mind?”
“Mind?”
“This is your first experience with a genuine international competition. The aspects and tastes of diving differ again between the Western countries and Asia, so I hope you are not crushed by the pressure of being a Sydney representative…”
“I’m okay, I’m okay,” Tomoki responded with a lively smile. “Even if you say it’s my first time, I’m with you, Coach Fujitani. And, yesterday Youichi-kun taught me a lot of things on the phone, like how to have physical contact with Western people.”
It wasn’t just Youichi-kun. In Tomoki’s knapsack the day before he departed, the new training schedule from Kayoko was hidden there. As well as letters from Reiji and Ryou, Sachiya’s flag, and for some reason a prayer charm for a good marriage match from Shibuki’s girlfriend’s grandmother. And, there was also an original support rock minidisc from Hiroya.
The plane carrying Tomoki, who was supported by all of those things and facing his first international competition, smoothly tilted its wings, and a few minutes later, it caught hold of the approaching ground with its wheels and safely touched down on the runway.
The Japanese water sports team, leaving the plane in droves, had a total of eighteen people. All of them except for Tomoki and Teramoto Kenichirou were swimmers. They were outnumbered as usual, but Tomoki, the youngest there, puffed up with pride and followed after Teramoto without shame. The knapsack he was carrying on his back was stuffed with an overflowing amount of fighting spirit, along with the many things that everyone gave to him.
It didn’t matter if the 4½ at the Olympic representative qualifying trials was just a one-time fluke. He could make it into the real thing through many years from now on. He knew very well that he was miles away from competing for medals at this World Cup as well as at Sydney in the summer. Even so, if he went after them with all his strength, even if he was defeated to exhaustion, no matter how many times he fell, he would surely become one level stronger. Four, or eight years later, he will have the power to compete with Youichi and Shibuki for the Olympic podium.
Bracingly focusing ahead, Tomoki advanced on a long and narrow pathway, and his field of vision suddenly opened, and a row of counters stretching horizontally jumped in.
Was this the problematic immigration inspection? Tomoki recalled the advice Youichi gave him last night, and let in fighting spirit into the pit of his stomach.
“Listen up, Tomo. The first thing about Western countries is that they regard physical contact between people as important. Testing this ability for contact is called immigration inspection. I know many tongue-tied people who were sent back to Japan when they failed it. You don’t want that, right, so first you have to greet the inspection officers by saying ‘sightseeing’ in a loud voice. Then, when the other person responds with something, introduce yourself simply in English. Favorite color, favorite flowers and so on. The most important point is heart. As long as you get across your disposition for contact, the other person will be satisfied. You have to be cheerful and smiling till the end.”
The immigration inspection counter was approaching moment by moment. On their side that was separated by a white line, various skin colors, various hair colors, and various eye colors were harmoniously forming a line. As Tomoki’s chest nervously beat fast, his eyes chased after Keisuke and Teramoto, who were a step ahead heading towards the counter. As expected of veterans with plenty of international experience, the two easily cleared it. Next please. An inspection officer who really did seem to be asking for skinship beckoned him, and it was finally Tomoki’s turn.
Tomoki took in a deep breath, and stepped towards the inspection officer with drooping eyes and a red face. Then, with his whole face smiling, he shouted “Sightseeing!” in a loud voice that seemed to echo throughout the entire airport.
My name is Tomoki Sakai.
I am a Japanese second-year middle school student.
My favorite color is blue.
My favorite flower is the moth orchid.
My favorite animals are dogs and dolphins and whales.
After that, after that…
“My favorite thing to do is to dive!!”

Team Milk’s Maurio McCoy, Cat Osterman, Ariel Torres And Hannah Roberts Spotlight New, Returning Olympic Sports
Tumblr media
The renowned got milk? project is presenting Team Milk—a group of best-in-class professional athletes setting out … [+] to debut brand name brand-new sporting occasions at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. Included are Maurio McCoy (skateboarding), Cat Osterman (softball), Ariel Torres (karate) and Hannah Roberts (BMX freestyle).
Team Milk
Few advertising campaign have been as common—or as lasting—as got milk?. More than 25 years earlier, what began as a series of advertisements including that renowned milk mustache ended up being a popular culture component.
But no brand name wishes to rest on its laurels. In the 2021 got milk? project, with professional athletes and Olympic hopefuls at the center, the milk mustaches have actually paved the way to crisp white clothing that enable the professional athletes to display what makes their sports distinct.
And for the freshly revealed Team Milk professional athletes, distinct is an understatement; all 4—Maurio McCoy (skateboarding), Cat Osterman (softball), Ariel Torres (karate) and Hannah Roberts (BMX freestyle)—are trying to certify or have actually certified to take part in sports that are either brand-new or going back to the Olympic program.
“This year, we are bringing together four exemplary athletes to be part of Team Milk—Cat, Ariel, Hannah and Maurio—who are all setting out to debut new or returning sporting events at the Olympics,” stated Yin Rani, CEO, MilkPEP. “Our athletes drink milk to get the nutrients they need in order to perform at their best and we’re thrilled to support them as they embark on this exciting journey.”
The Team Milk professional athletes cover a variety of experience. Osterman, 38, is a two-time Olympic medalist (gold at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008), however her sport, softball, is simply going back to the program for Tokyo 2020 after a 12-year hiatus.

Team Milk
The scenarios out of Osterman’s control—several Olympic cycles without softball and after that Covid-19 disrupting her training when softball was validated for the Tokyo Games—might have required her to retire, as numerous other professional athletes have actually needed to do.
But she credits the assistance of Team Milk, in addition to her internal drive to oblige the more youthful generation not to quit on softball, with keeping her momentum heading into the rescheduled 2021 Games.
“I want younger athletes to know the dedication I have as an athlete. I mean, I still play at 38 years old, which takes dedication!” Osterman stated. “I am dedicated physically and mentally and have a passion for what I do—I want other athletes to also have a passion for what they do and the sport they pursue.”
Osterman indicate the longstanding got milk? projects permitting trainees and future professional athletes to discover a professional athlete to relate to, which she believes is important.
Once upon a time, those professional athletes might have trended more towards NBA or NFL stars with multi-year, multi-million-dollar incomes. Now, nevertheless, young softball gamers, skateboarders, karatekas and freestyle BMX riders can discover a professional athlete who does what they imagine doing at a high level in the got milk? project.
“Team Milk gives us the opportunity to spread that passion and dedication and reach different sports and athletes of all ages,” Osterman stated. “They push their athletes to promote healthy living and maintain a healthy lifestyle and that is something that has always been important to me and something I want to show young girls in softball.”
Roberts, 19, has actually never ever completed in an Olympics. Her sport, BMX freestyle, is debuting in Tokyo this summer season, even as BMX racing has actually belonged to the Olympic program considering that the 2008 Beijing Games. The top-ranked females’s park rider in the U.S. likewise wishes to motivate girls to pursue BMX freestyle.

Team Milk
“Having a sponsor like milk is everything,” Roberts stated. “They’re super helpful and they love their athletes and that’s incredible to see. It also gives younger women something to look forward to—‘I could one day possibly ride for Team Milk.’ That’s something we haven’t seen a lot of in BMX.”
Indeed, unlike another action sport debuting at the Tokyo Games—skateboarding—which has actually made significant strides in the last ten years towards equivalent reward handbags for all genders and significant sponsors signing female skaters, females’s BMX is still trying to reach that level of equity. Not all contests ensure equivalent cash prize, and some significant contests, like X Games, still don’t provide females’s BMX disciplines.
But a phase as big as the Olympics can compress years’ worth of development in a provided sport into a small schedule.
When skateboarding was authorized as an Olympic sport in 2016, nations participated in fast facilities structure, training young Olympic hopefuls—some just 10 or 11—in their effort to get approved for the video games as significant sponsors started signing the next generation of professional skaters.
McCoy, 25, turned professional on the eve of the pandemic—and after that, his life was “slowing down and speeding up at the same time,” he stated.

Team Milk
“The ultimate goal was turning pro and once I got there, I wanted a new list of goals,” McCoy stated. “Essentially, it came down to wanting to have as long of a career as I could in the sport. I want to leave my mark on skateboarding in a positive way—be an inspiration to younger athletes and help pave the way. It’s another reason why I am so thankful to be a part of Team Milk; they are helping me do that!”
Torres, 24, has actually been practicing kata considering that he was 6 years of ages, however he never ever might have dreamed he would one day present it to the world through the Olympics.
The Hialeah, Florida, local was 18 when he found out that karate would be contributed to the program for the Tokyo 2020 Games, and he instantly made it a concern.
“The Olympics is no doubt the biggest stage in my career and a huge advancement for my sport,” Torres stated. “I sacrificed everything to be where I am today—time with friends and family and experiences.”

Team Milk
When he describes the physicality of Kata, Torres states, “Think about it this way: if you can punch through the wood, you can punch through air and you should have the same strength and formation as if you were punching wood. In order to do all of this, you have to have a strong body and therefore, strong bones.” Joining Team Milk was a no-brainer for him then, due to the fact that it’s belonged to his healing considering that he started practicing karate as a kid.
The environments that support these 4 sports debuting on or going back to the Tokyo program are not as robust as some Olympic tentpole sports, and all 4 professional athletes highlighted what a game-changer sponsorship is to training.
When the pandemic very first closed down competitive sport completely and after that triggered long lasting effects for certifying occasions, McCoy, Osterman, Torres and Roberts had the ability to continue to concentrate on their training without stressing over searching for other tasks to support themselves.
And while each of these professional athletes has a rival’s heart and wishes to leave Tokyo with a medal, they likewise comprehend the bigger function they play in functioning as ambassadors of their sports on a worldwide phase and motivating the next generation.
“The hiatus was a detriment to our sport. I am so thankful it is back this year and that there are countries worldwide that want the sport played,” Osterman stated. “I really want younger athletes to see that and know that—look at today, softball is back in the Olympics!”
With Los Angeles hosting the Olympics in 2028, Osterman stated, it is her hope that softball is authorized for the program there also.
“Overall, being a part of Team Milk is huge for me and I am thrilled to be on the team the same year that skateboarding is getting introduced to the Olympics,” McCoy stated. Skateboarding has actually likewise been validated for Paris 2024.
“I am definitely hoping to see more exposure in my sport now that it is part of the Olympics,” McCoy included. “I hope it excites the younger generations and inspires them to try it out.”

The Ancient Greek Olympics
Tumblr media
On my exploration through Athens, I was talking to a local who was telling me about the big upcoming Olympic Games that was happening later in the week. I asked where it was going to be held, assuming that it would be near the Acropolis or somewhere lots of people can access, but the man told me it would be happening in a very rural area. He then gave me the rundown on what happens at the Olympic Games.
The games are hosted by a city called Elis, so if you are coming from Athens it would be a 120 mile journey. Elis is far from all the major Greek city-states—so at least its even. Despite the long distance, most people walk to the games with only some being lucky enough to have a donkey. Once people get their, there is no ticket necessary, however there are also not any accommodations made for the 100,000 plus spectators that plan to stay for the full week of games.
The first Olympic games were held in 776 BCE and then held every four years after that (Faulkner 2012). The way that the past Olympic were remembered was by the name if the winner of the 600 ft sprint (Faulkner, 2012). Women were unable attend the Games as this was seen as something only for men(Faulkner, 2012). Something I learned from talking to this kind man is that the Games were centered around politics (Faulkner, 2012). The Games were often Elitist as one needs money and time to prepare for the games.
Winning the Olympic Games is everything to an athlete. While there are runner up prizes, there is only one crown for each event (Faulkner, 2012). The goal of every athlete is to win as many crowns as possible (Faulkner, 2012). The famous Greek poet, Pindar, perfectly describes the meaning of winning a crown by saying, “Ample is the glory stored for Olympian winners… (Pindar, 470BCE). Winning an event in front of one hundred thousand spectators instantly earns the winner a big amount of fame (Faulkner, 2012).
I was very grateful to this man for giving me the rundown, but unfortunately I will not be able to attend the games and must move on with my trip.

Our third day in Athens was a charm! We started off our day with a tour of the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens (OAKA). The outdoor stadium (pictured below) and basketball arena were not built solely for 2004 Olympics held in Greece. The basketball arena has the second biggest capacity in Europe and can hold 6500 spectators standing in the corridors. The swimming pool that we got to see next was the same one that Michael Phelps set his Olympic world record in during the 2004 Olympics! They had a total of 16 pools both indoor and outdoor. In the anti-doping lab that we went to next, we were able to see the GCMS machines and the bottles that contain the urine samples. They explained to us that competitors were finding ways to open the bottle without cracking the ring and changing the urine from positive to negative samples; this resulted in the Russian scandal and stricter accreditation guidelines for anti-doping labs. The samples take 4 hours to prepare, 30 minutes to test, and about 1 day to analyze, but the athletes receive their results in 10 days. I found it interesting that the athletes must be cognizant about consuming nutritional supplements, such as Herbal Life products, because they could potentially contain substances that could prohibit their participation in competitive sports.
We then returned to the stadium where we were given a lecture on the educational role of the International Olympic Academy. The purpose of IOA is to disseminate the principles and values of the Games. His important takeaway points were that olympism should be viewed as a way of life and that the athletes are starting to stray from the original goal of the mind and body balance. These are the values that he shared: fair play, joy of effort, pursuit of excellence, respect for fellow men and diversity, faith in peace and democracy, sportsmanship, and friendship and solidarity. The only value that doesn’t deal with others is excellence because it’s more about reaching your fullest potential which was very inspirational! We also learned that there are 6 colors that represent the Olympics and the 5 ring colors represent the main colors of all of the countries’ flags. Apparently, they group the America’s together as one continent because the 5 rings also represent the 5 continents that compete: Oceania, America’s, Europe, Asia and Africa.
After lunch, we got to tour the stadium which held the first modern Olympic Games! All of the Olympic torches that were housed in the museum were so unique. Our next adventure was the climb up the Lycabettus Hill. On the way up, we played music to drown out our thoughts of how demanding the climb was in the heat. It was well worth it thought because the #views were amazing of Athens! Last but not least, a group of us went to Hans and Gretel to treat ourselves to a chimney cake with ice cream gelato inside (see below). Our days here are full of new experiences and I cannot wait to see what else Greece has in store for us!
