Friday 7 August 1998 and Saturday 8 August 1998 - Double feature - overfull compartment to Zürich with the Sommer Spezial - Street Parade Energy 98 - a day full of whistles

Friday 7 August 1998 Hi everyone Are you all keeping cool, reasonably hydrated and safe from natural disasters? Some parts of the USA are experiencing heat waves, and others may also be experiencing heavy rain. As for Europe, from this Wednesday the 8th August it should cool down. I heard about the 110+ F / 45+ C temperatures in Spain / Portugal. Temperatures you would expect in Las Vegas.

I would like to take a moment with my twenty year stories, and kind of look back on an incident that took place in Tanzania and in Kenya. And we would soon learn of an entity which would shake up the USA about three years later under a different presidential administration. But if you are reading this, then I have survived. The events took place about 9:30 AM Munich time. I wanted to be as objective as I can about this. It is a tragedy indeed, that any building representing the USA overseas permanent diplomatic mission, is bombed in an otherwise peaceful nation. To not name the individuals or groups, for reasons of not giving them any publicity, I leave it to the reader, to look up the 7th August 1998 Nairobi or Dar Es Salaam. I also do not want to comment on the US government at the time, their actions after this incident, pair of embassy bombings, I think if you are interested to know the details that you might be able to look them up on your own time and draw your own conclusions.

I consider myself lucky to only hear about the incident on the radio news and in the Abendzeitung (evening newspaper), and not have the US Consulate either in München or Frankfurt am Main having been bombed. Otherwise it would no longer be safe for me to remain in Germany that year, and I would not complete my Werkstudenttätigkeit at Widgetmeister International.

So with that in mind, I was glad to know that I had two first class train reservations for Saturday 8th August 1998, from München Hbf to Zürich HB and back, for about 178.00 D-Mark. I also had to get a reservation to the Hotel Rümlang as that was the only online hotel for a cheap price that I could find, I think for CHF 120 including breakfast (CHF 110 without) - because the youth hostel on Mutschellenstrasse 114 in Zürich was fully booked. What happened that day on the train had nothing to do with the actions in Nairobi or Dar Es Salaam. But I was happy to get away from everything and have a good time.

There was not much to say for today, the 8th and 9th I am not sure. Have a good day / afternoon / evening / night.

Its about time for AA 1216 to board so ill leave you with my Saturday 8th August 1998 story, to forget about the days events from Friday the 7th August ????????, at least for the weekend.

That event was certainly frightening to hear about, but it did not change my plans for the weekend of 8th and 9th August to go to Zürich for the Street Parade.

To give a summary of the day's events

woke up about 6;30 AM, took shower, shut off my alarm clock so it would not go off on Sunday the 9th

made sure I had my passport and two train tickets to and from Zürich HB

took bus 37 to Arabellapark, U4 to München Hauptbahnhof

found EC 92 train to Zürich and my compartment in the rear of the train, had total of seven in a compartment meant for six

heard "Jeanny" by Falco on the radio, was a very controversial song in the 1980s

between Buchloe and Memmingen had breakfast on train in restaurant car

was confronted by German border police but no drugs were found

had passport stamped in Bregenz by Austrian border guards

Arrived about 12:30 PM in Zürich HB, went to tracks 21-24 for S-Bahn train to Rümlang via Oerlikon and Glattbrugg ZH

checked into Hotel Rümlang, left clothes bag in room and took S-Bahn to Zürich HB, about 2 PM

toured around the Limmatquai, Bürkliplatz, Paradeplatz, Utoquai, Quaianlagen Park

about 8:30 PM tried to find place to eat in Niederdorferstrasse, everything full, even Johanniter

Did one more walk along Niederdorferstrasse past the Grossmünster

walked to Zürich HB and had a hot dog for dinner, less of a crowd about 10:30 PM

took S-Bahn about 11:15 PM to Rümlang, arrive at hotel about 11:55 PM

sleep That was pretty much my first day in Zürich for that weekend.

The 8th August 1998 was a sunny Saturday morning, where I had planned to go to Zürich for the Street Parade. As there was no room at the Zürich Hostel on Mutschellenstrasse 114, I had to plan for a night at a regular hotel. There were no online bookable hotels that I could find for 8th August in Zürich, that were below 140 CHF, so I found one in Rümlang, on the west side of the Kloten airport runway, for 120 CHF with breakfast. I also had two tickets, 89 D-Mark apiece, to go from München to Zürich, and Zürich to München on the 9th.

I woke up about 6:30 AM, took a shower, had a small snack, took my supply of about six soda cans to add to my nonalcoholic swig bottle (usually coke or similar and Fanta Lemon or Fanta Orange), and shut off my alarm so on Sunday it would not disturb anyone. Then I was ready to go to the bus stop to get to München Hbf. I took the line 37 to Arabellapark, then U-4 to Hauptbahnhof. By the time I arrived on the main line platforms, I found the SBB first class car where my ticket was reserved for. About 8:30 AM the train left, and the compartment was overfilled, namely seven instead of six people. One guy I think was about 19 years old had his girlfriend along, planning to go to the Street Parade. His mother was also in the compartment. It was not easy to get photos from the compartment window, but I managed a few. The train announcement was a failure, all the German portion was garbled or even momentarily cut off, and the English portion was marginally understandable. The audio equipment on the train was not doing well that day.

About 9:15 AM the train arrived in Buchloe, my ticket was punched, and I was free to go to the dining car. The dining car had full service that day. I ordered scrambled eggs with ham and potatoes (similar to those from the song "Chatanooga Choo Choo"). The waiter also served coffee, with one pitcher for coffee and the other for heated milk. That tasted great. The train arrived about 9:40 AM in Memmingen. The German border police made a preemptive search, and while I was eating my breakfast still, two of the men asked me to go into the corridor (this is a true story) and they looked everywhere in my George-Costanza-wallet. ?????????????? They found only D-Mark and some Swiss Francs, but no drugs of any kind. They told me to put everything back the way it was and they let me go back to my breakfast. That was not a particularly fun experience but at least I was free. Most of the rest of the journey went without incident, other than the Austrian border police giving me a stamp in my passport for Bregenz, ????and the Swiss conductor taking a look at my ticket and giving it a punch as well. The train did not stop in Oerlikon, so I had to go to Zürich HB. The train arrived at 12:30 in Zürich HB. I had to go underground to the then-platforms 21 to 24 (now they are 41 to 44) and find the S-Bahn train to Rümlang via Oerlikon and Glattbrugg. Also I had to pay the 8.80 CHF for the 24 hour pass for the Zürich fare zone.

Because I did not know the way to the hotel (no Google in August 1998 and most people did not have cellphones), I asked the way, and a bus driver going off his shift offered to take me there and it was a half mile drive. He did not ask for any money and even when I offered, he declined. The Swiss can be very kind that way. I checked into my room for 120 CHF. It was on the ground floor, no air conditioning but with openable window, and was adjacent to an elementary school that was closed for the summer break. Rümlang other than the planes flying by, due to it being close to the Zürich international airport, was very quiet.

I walked to the Rümlang train station and caught the S-Bahn to Zürich HB. It was full of people headed to the city center. Most were heading towards the General Guisan Quai and Bellevueplatz, about a mile south where the Limmat opens up to Lake Zürich. People were more or less dressed like at the Love Parade in Berlin, that is where I heard about the Street Parade. The day was mostly sunny, I think the temperature was around 85 to 90 F, about 30 to 32 C.

The main point of action is at General Guisan Quai turning at Bellevueplatz on to Utoquai, that is the route of the Lovemobiles, where people are on caged flat-bed trucks travelling about 3 mph. In 1998 they went in a clockwise direction, but every subsequent Street Parade I attended, 2003, 2004 and 2017, they went counterclockwise in the opposite direction. Lovemobiles may have about 30 to 40 people dancing along to music, and between the Lovemobiles, there can be about 100+ people dancing along. One of the difficult jobs are, the Lovemobile drivers, and also the security staff, who make sure that dancers, officially affiliated or not, are kept safe. The Lovemobiles take up the same space as an 18 wheeler truck and must be yielded the right of way that they deserve. Also the police and city janitors have it rough too, keeping the peace and keeping the streets clean (I feel bad for the janitors for the day after, cleaning up the broken glass bottles on the street)

The other places to see music played, are along the Limmatquai, Bürkliplatz, Paradeplatz, and the Niederdorferstrasse. All those were full of pedestrians, and the roads that normally had trams running, they were rerouted for the day. For example, if I wanted to go from the hostel in Wollishofen, I would have to take the tram 7 to the Neue Börse and take the S-4 or S-10 to Zürich HB.

It was so easy to lose sense of time. About 8 PM I was getting hungry and wanted to find somewhere to eat. The Niederdorferstrasse was so full, most places had no seating left. Even the Brasserie Johanniter was full, and maybe there would be a half hour waiting time. So I went back to the Bellevueplatz. About 10:30 PM I decided to call it a day, go back to Zürich HB, and find some place not with such a long line. There was a place selling hot dogs. I had two hot dogs and a Sprite, for about 5.50 CHF. I sat around for a half hour. At 11:10 PM I went to the platforms 21 to 24 for the train to Rümlang. I caught the train and it was still quite full. The train reached Rümlang at 11:35 PM and I walked back to the hotel. It must have been 11:55 PM when I reached my room. There was no curfew but I had to use my key to enter from the outside.

My room had a color TV with international channels. I watched a bit of the Swiss channels, then M6 with French videos, such as"Cruel Summer" with Alliage and Ace of Base, same people who sang "all that she wants", "Soirée Disco" by Boris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg5YSG_SDac, "Je danse le MIA" by IAM and "This is how we party" by Soap. I went to sleep around 1:10 AM. That was one long day and I was worn out from so much walking and dancing and such.

Next is a nice relaxing morning at the hotel, roundabout journey in the Forch valley and back through Uster and Stettbach, lunch at the Brasserie Johanniter, something different on the seasonal menu, journey up to the Uto-Kulm viewing point, and train ride home.

While it costs to enter the Royal Palace, you can enjoy its beauty admiring the outside if you’re in a rush. Or, come by in the evening and see the Palace from the nearby Sabatini Gardens.

Sabatini Gardens

Want another fascinating view of the Royal Palace? Head just north of the Palace, down the giant staircases to Sabatini Gardens. These Classical gardens were built in the 1930s where the former stables used to be. Here you can admire gorgeous flowers, a fascinating set of reflecting pools and fountains, and the Palace’s towering north facade. The Sabatini Gardens are open from 9am to 9pm and are especially magical close to sunset. This is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Madrid. If you’re looking for a great Instagram photo opportunity, stand at the northern end of the reflecting pool and set the Royal Palace as your backdrop.

5. Plaza Mayor

Madrid’s living room, and the major public square in the heart of the city center. While wandering the tightly packed streets of central Madrid, you can’t miss this grand open space, boasting warm colors and picturesque architecture. The cobbled stone square is flanked by countless cafes, and acts as the meeting place, including for many of the free walking tours. This plaza was designed in 1619 by Juan Gómez de Mora and is something you must see in Madrid. Food and drink can be a bit overpriced in the plaza, but it’s worth sitting down at one of the tables at least once for the experience! We recommend Restaurant DCorozon at the North East corner of the plaza.

6. Madrid’s Museums

Madrid is a city filled to the brim with museums. From incredible paintings, history, artwork and architecture, it’s not easy to experience all of them even in a lengthy visit. In a pinch, here are the best museums in Madrid:

Prado Museum (Museo Nacional del Prado)

The Prado Museum (Museo Nacional del Prado) is a must-see when visiting Spain’s capital. There are many tours available to really dive into the works, but for those of you who are on a tight schedule, one or two hours can be enough to see the most important pieces of art. There are over 7,000 paintings within its interior, so even spending the entire day here is likely to only scratch the surface, and is an intimidating feet! The Museum is open from 10am to 8pm, however visiting at the very start of the day or during lunchtime around 2pm may save you some time in the queues. Buying a ticket in advance means that you can head straight in through security and avoid the long line altogether. Free entry is offered from 6 to 8pm Monday through Saturday and 5-7pm on Sundays and holidays, but the free hours almost always equate to large lines and crowded rooms. Must-see paintings include Valaquez’s Las Meninas, and Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights.

Reina Sofia Museum (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía):

Spain’s national museum which holds 20th-century art. This prized museum is also located close to the Atocha train station in Madrid’s “golden triangle” of art. Holding Picasso’s Guernica, this is an essential stop for any lover of art. The Reina Sofia is closed every Tuesday, with entry from 10am to 9pm. The least busiest time to visit is right at opening. Like the Prado Museum, you can purchase tickets online in advance.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza):

Another incredibly popular museum in Madrid hosting an overview of art from the 13th to the late 20th century. From Renaissance and Baroque, to Pop Art and Impressionism, The Thyssen is one of the most extraordinary private collections of European art in the world. Where the Prado and Reina Sofia allow you to dive into specific bodies of work, the Thyssen takes a much broader view of artistic styles. The Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal)

8. Tapa Street (Calle de la Cava Baja)

Cram yourself into a small bar a little past 8pm to start your dinner with small plates and ask for a glass of vino tinto or 3! There are by far more tapa bars than empty stomachs in Madrid, but here on Calle de la Cava Baja you will find some of the best and locally popular spots in the old city. What is a Camino?

The word ‘Camino’ in Spanish simply means path, road, way, journey. The Camino de Santiago is a network of paths that lead to a cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. Throughout Europe, there are hundreds of these paths that all lead to many different places of worship. It is said to be one of three main pilgrimages that all sins can be forgiven, the other two are Via Francigena ending in Rome and Jerusalem.

The Camino de Santiago or ‘The Way of St James’ has become the most popular of all paths and has existed since the medieval times, however it is believed to have been a path of significance beforehand with the ancient pagans and even suggested with the Romans who concurred Spain and perhaps Santiago de Compostela was even a Roman shrine.

For Christian pilgrims, the route to Santiago is of importance and is said to be the burial site of St. James when his remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem to the north-west of Spain then buried at the site of the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Why do people undertake this journey?

Not all pilgrims in these modern times walk necessarily for religious reasons. Some walk for personal spiritual growth, others for the experience, some for the challenge. Whatever the reason, the popularity has grown considerably since the 1980s when the Camino Francés was declared the first European Cultural Route and even more so in recent years as more people become more aware of its existence through movies, such as ‘The Way’ and ‘Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago’. Also, with social media and people sharing their journeys online it also encourages others to walk it.

People complete this pilgrimage for all kinds of personal reasons.

Where to start your pilgrimage

A Camino traditionally begins from your home and many do start from their front door, others choose to start at the beginning of one of the various routes you can take. This is a decision entirely up to you to make.

With a variety of paths to Santiago to choose, many first time walkers take the most popular route – the Camino Francés. This starts in the village of St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France before crossing the Pyrenees into Spain. It is roughly 790kms long.

The statistics of pilgrims completing their Camino in 2017 was approximately 301,006 with around 180,726 of these having walked the Francés route. Other popular routes include the Caminho Portugés, Camino del Norte and Camino Inglés.

For a pilgrim to qualify for a Compostela certificate they need to at least complete 100km or 200km if on a bike into Santiago. This means for many pilgrims walking they would start in the village of Sarria (110km to Santiago).

There are several paths to choose to begin your pilgrimage.

How long does it take to walk the Camino?

If you are walking the Francés route, the average time one takes is around 35 days. This will have you walking at approximately 25 km per day. I always suggest to people to look at what your body is capable to achieve comfortably and add a few extra days to it, so you can have a rest day every now and then. If you only have 30 days for example, then consider either a shorter route or start closer to the destination point.

Don’t push yourself too fast as you won’t enjoy it as much, you will also miss out on some great sites, plus you are more at risk of injury which could have you leave the path earlier. This is something I see all the time on my various walking trips.

Consider your physical capabilities when choosing the length of your trip.

When to go

The pilgrimage season starts around April and ends late October with the busiest times being July, August and September.

It is not recommended to walk any of the southern sections of the Via de la Plata, Mozarabe or de Levante during the hottest time of summer as the temperatures can get into the extremely high 30’s. Even walking across the Meseta on the Francés Route can be extremely hot as it is very exposed with little shade.

It is also recommended not to walk during the winter months as it can get bitterly cold and on the higher points like the passes over the Pyrenees, the snow makes it quite dangerous with pilgrims each year losing their lives to the elements. Several of the Pilgrim accommodations are not open during the winter months as well.

Choose milder conditions for your journey, so that you don’t get yourself into trouble.

How to get there

If you are planning to walk the Francés route of the Camino, you can fly into either Madrid or Barcelona then travel by train or bus out to St-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Or, you can fly into Paris and there are daily trains from Gare Montparnasse with one change over.

For any of the other routes, you can access them by train and bus from Madrid and Barcelona.

Credential or the Pilgrims Passport

This is another item the pilgrims of today carry with great pride, in the middle ages it was considered the pilgrim’s safeguard. The passport, also known as their credential, is a very important document that the pilgrim carries with them whilst either walking, cycling, horseback on the Camino. This is a way that the pilgrim is identified and allows them to be able to stay in various ‘pilgrim accommodation’ along the way.

It is also a way of proving that they are indeed a pilgrim as they collect a stamp, (sello) each day from a place they had stayed and once in the region of Galicia (the last 100km) they are required to collect 2 stamps per day. It will prove that the pilgrim walked at least the last 100km into Santiago which is the necessary distance to be able to collect one’s Compostela certificate. This is the official testament to the pilgrim’s journey.

One can collect their stamps from a variety of places including their accommodation, churches, cafes, post offices – almost anywhere. They will receive their final stamp at the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

You can pick up your credential at the start of your journey like at the Alburgues, churches or order them online through sites like The Confraternity of Saint James or the Australian Friends of the Camino.

Way-markers

When walking one of the Caminos, you will find yourself following yellow painted arrows across the country. These can be painted in many different places like on a rock, a road, a fence – anywhere. I always liken it to the ‘Where’s Wally’ game. The yellow arrows in Spanish are called ‘flechas’ simply meaning arrows and just point the way.

There are other signs you will find to follow as well, these being a symbol of a ‘Concha’, a scallop shell. They can be found often on a tile that is placed on a signpost, in the pavement or even on local houses and fences. Over the years there have been many stories behind the meaning of using the shell symbol. Some are of religious stories, or directional with the lines of the shell representing the different pilgrim routes that all come together in one place, this being Santiago de Compostela.

Some reasons are as simple as it was a tool used by the pilgrim like a plate to eat off or a way of scooping water to drink from a steam whilst on their journey. Today, pilgrims carry the shell on their packs with pride, a symbol to show that they are indeed a pilgrim.

Accommodation

There are various places for a pilgrim to stay on their journey along the way. The most common and popular is to stay in the Albergues or Refugio’s, these are pilgrim hostels and one is only allowed to stay if they carry a pilgrim’s passport. These places offer a bed for the weary pilgrim and it can be in a dormitory style hostel, a church, an old renovated barn, or a schoolhouse. The rooms may sleep just a few pilgrims or up to hundred – they are all different.

The cost can be from a donation or €5–€15 as an average, sometimes a little higher. With the pilgrim’s passport, you can occasionally get ‘Pilgrim discount’ at other forms of accommodation like hotels and B&Bs.

What would you expect to find in an Albergue?

These are places that are run by volunteers (hospitalero/hospitalera) and offer the very basics for the pilgrim. You will find a bed in most (though sometimes you will need a mat for the floor), a shower and a communal kitchen. Staying at an Albergue isn’t for everyone, but it certainly does add to the whole of the Camino experience. This can be very rewarding for some to share their journey with other pilgrims over a meal at night.

Do I need to book ahead for an Albergue?

Not always, though through the busy season it can be helpful. Do be aware that not all places take bookings and it comes as a first-in, first-served basis. For some of the lesser used routes, like the Via de la Plata, it’s not needed.

What to take

Less is always best. Many pilgrims find along the way they have too much gear. Do remember you are walking from town to town, so there are shops along the way. When choosing what gear to pack, go for the lightest options, as your body will thank you for it.

The basic packing list for the Camino

Boots or shoes you plan to walk in

A backpack – size depends on your personal needs. I recommend Hiking poles

Spare lightweight shoes for the evening

2 quick drying hiking shirts

2 zip-off hiking pants. These are not only quick-drying, having the zip-offs allows you the flexibility to wear shorts if the weather warms up or long pants if the temperature drops – without carrying extra clothes.

2 sets of socks. Also, wear liners as they are good to wear under your thicker socks. This can help prevent blisters and easier to wash more regularly as they dry quicker.

3 pairs of underwear. I don’t recommend cotton as once it gets wet it will take longer to dry. You also want a fabric that will help wick away sweat, keeping you comfortable.

Jacket for warmth

Poncho or rain jacket. Rain pants are a personal choice.

Buff

Lightweight sleeping bag

Water bottle or hydration pack

Sarong or Shemagh. I recommend this as a must-have item as it can be used for many things, like a scarf, a wrap for after the shower, a towel, a blanket to sit on, make a bag for the evenings, many different outfits like a jacket, skirt or top – just to name a few.

Something to sleep in, especially when in shared accommodation.

If you want the experience of walking the Camino but not carrying a pack, there are many companies that offer this daily service for as little as €7.

You have the option for a pack carrying service if that’s your preference.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

I always feel that when visiting another country, it’s respectful to try and speak their language if possible. But, if you’re like me and are terrible at languages then don’t fear as you can get by with a few words of English.

Arriving in Santiago de Compostela

Each pilgrim arrives in Santiago full of many emotions. For some it’s been a journey of self-discovery, a challenge achieved or a spiritual journey. Whatever the reason for one to walk a Camino, they all end with a sense of change within themselves. For some, the journey is not over as they may choose to continue along for the extra few days walking out to Finisterre (considered the end of the world) or onto Muxia. Some will just simply turn around and walk back or chose another path.

On arrival in Santiago, pilgrims gather in the main arena in front of the Cathedral celebrating their achievements with fellow pilgrims. Within the cathedral, many will pay respect to St. James and stay for the ‘pilgrims’ service where they are blessed and cleansed by the swinging of a large Botafumeiro filled with burning incense. This is considered a cleansing for the pilgrims.

Pilgrims present their credential to the pilgrim’s office where they can collect their final stamp and receive their Compostela (a certificate of completion).

My Thoughts

I have walked many different pilgrimages throughout the world and consider them to be a walk like no other. If you ever get the chance to experience a pilgrimage or Camino, then do it! You won’t regret it.

When Can Artists Bend Ethics for Art’s Sake?

What right does an artist have to use other people in their work—to invade their lives, violate their privacy, or cause them harm? What will we forgive in the name of art?

These are the questions I was asking a decade ago when, for a graduate performance art class taught by Tania Bruguera, I paid a classmate $1 to befriend my best friend Laura and write reports on how she thought Laura was coping after a recent break-up. At our final class, I passed around a folder containing these reports and a photocopy of the $1 check I’d written. The folder reached Laura last. I watched across the table as she read the document of my simultaneous care and betrayal.

I got an A for the class, but lost my friend. It was a horrible thing to do, but I was 21 and obsessed with Sophie Calle and the line between art and life. Since the 1970s, Calle has repeatedly invited us to question whether artists should be held to the same standards as other people. In viewing her work, we must ask whether invading someone’s privacy or betraying their trust is an acceptable emotional cost to art.

In 1979, Calle followed a man she’d met at an art opening in Paris to Venice, where she spent two weeks spying on and photographing him as he went about his business in the city. She presented the images alongside text detailing both her observations and emotions during the period, as Suite Vénitienne. This man, identified only as Henri B., was the first unwitting participant to Calle’s artistic game.

In 1983, she found a lost address book on the street and photocopied the contents before returning it. She then telephoned each of the contacts to question them on the identity of the owner, and published her findings as a series (“The Address Book”) in the French newspaper Libération. The owner, the documentary filmmaker Pierre Baudry, threatened to sue her, wrote open letters to Libération, and eventually sent the paper a nude photo of Calle that he demanded they publish as retaliation. This literal tit-for-tat response to her exposure of his identity did not perturb Calle; she ultimately incorporated it into the piece.

For The Hotel (1983), Calle worked as a chambermaid, exploring and documenting the private belongings and writings of hotel guests. Observing this piece, we experience both Calle’s curiosity and the unsettling thought that, at every hotel we have ever stayed in, our own possessions might have been subjected to similar scrutiny. What might someone like Calle have learned from our nightgowns and slippers, our diaries and postcards? How might she have misinterpreted us?

A crucial element of these early pieces is Calle’s involvement of the viewer in her transgressions. By inviting us to immerse ourselves in the narratives of her observations, she makes us complicit in her voyeurism—even as we question it. It is not just Calle invading these strangers’ privacy and observing their lives without consent, but us, too. We may not agree with her methods, but by engaging with the work, we find ourselves tacitly condoning it.

Decades later, though, the question that still hangs over these pieces is whether or not they were ethical. Did Henri B., Pierre Baudry, or those hotel guests have a right to privacy? Can any of us expect to be protected from the artist’s gaze?

In 2013, Arne Svenson caused a Calle-like controversy for using a telephoto lens to take photos of his Manhattan neighbors, later exhibiting the work in a local gallery. Svenson was sued, but won the case based on his First Amendment rights, and “The Neighbors” went on to be exhibited across the country. Though the discussion continues as to whether Svenson’s photographs of families, children, pets, and intimate, private spaces is ethically acceptable, the judge’s ruling makes clear that legally, at least artists have a right to invade aspects of our privacy.

Considered in conjunction with conversations about digital surveillance, data protection, and online privacy—not to mention random strangers who might be livetweeting intimate exchanges—this ruling might seem rather scary. Belgian artist Dries Depoorter uses digital technology to explore this fear. For Tinder In (2015), Depoorter traced women (and some men) who appeared on his Tinder app to their LinkedIn profiles, then displayed and published their profile pictures from each side by side, pointing out both the ease with which individuals can be traced, and the split-personalities of online identities.

The interesting thing about all of these pieces is that, while their controversy lies in the question of an individual’s right to privacy, the works themselves actually reveal very little about their subjects. In reading the texts accompanying Calle’s work, we learn much more about the stalker than the stalked. It’s easy to understand the sense of invasion felt by Henri B. and Pierre Baudry, as well as Svenson’s neighbors and Depoorter’s Tinder matches, but perhaps the true grievance is that the artists have used these strangers’ images and identities to create works that have nothing to do with them.

Spanish artist Santiago Sierra’s use of anonymous individuals raises similar ethical questions, though rather than invading their privacy, he asks them to submit to him bodily. For 160cm Line Tattooed on 4 People (2000), he paid heroin-addicted prostitutes the price of a shot of the drug to allow him to tattoo them. For Group of Persons Facing a Wall (2002), he paid homeless women the price of a night in a hostel to stand facing a gallery wall. And for 10 People Paid to Masturbate (2000), he paid workers $20 to masturbate in front of a camera.

Unlike Calle, Svenson, and Depoorter, Sierra does seek consent from his subjects, but the nature of this consent is highly questionable. These pieces draw attention to the exploitative, transactional nature of our society, pointing to the commodification of bodies and exposing the power structures that operate within our everyday lives. Conceptually and politically, the works might be seen as noble, but in actually using the bodies of vulnerable individuals, Sierra must enact the very exploitation and dehumanization he critiques. He forces us to ask if it is okay for an artist to use people. Can the end justify the means?

In 1992, Paul Auster based a character in his novel Leviathan on Sophie Calle, borrowing some of her works as well as inventing new ones. This depiction of Calle is heavily critiqued in Chris Kraus’s autofictional novel I Love Dick (1997); she claims Auster’s version of Calle is “a waif-like creature relieved of complications like ambition and career.” Ironically, this criticism—that using a real person as the subject for art strips that person of their individuality and complexities—can be levelled just as fairly at Suite Vénitienne, The Address Book, and The Hotel. Like Auster, Calle presents her subjects as simplified versions of themselves, and treats them like fictional characters in a narrative she remains in control of.

It is, I think, this relieving of complications that is most disturbing and, in the end, most painful. Should we find ourselves the subject of an artist’s gaze, most of us would like them to see the whole of us, to render us fairly and try to understand our complexities. Unfortunately, the artist’s motive is often more to do with projecting or reflecting a part of themselves rather than reaching an empathetic understanding of their subjects. What they were looking for, really, is a mirror.

In the play between the private and the public, artists have both the ability and the right to provoke, shock, and disturb. What we often fail to recognize, however, is that by giving them a platform, it is us as viewers who have bestowed this position of power upon them. By consuming and applauding Calle’s early works, we effectively opened our own curtains to Svenson and gave our profile photos to Depoorter. Perhaps the question is not whether artists have the right to invade our privacy or cause us harm, but why we’ve allowed them to.

I’m not proud of what I did to Laura back in grad school. A decade later, I’m appalled by my callousness and can hardly remember my own justifications. But I do remember the surprise I felt at her anger. I remember expecting her to understand, wanting her to acknowledge my cleverness, to think about the nuances of privacy and trust, and sense as I did the precarious power wielded by the word “art.” I wonder if it is this kind of optimistic thinking that drives Calle and other artists. For those who have devoted their lives to their work, perhaps it doesn’t seem so extraordinary for them to imagine others should be willing to devote theirs, too.

What are the UK travel rules from May 17? (CNN) — As of today, going on holiday is no longer illegal for travelers from England, Scotland and Wales. While the move has been met with relief from those eager to take a foreign holiday, many have been left confused by the new travel regulations, along with the risk-based “traffic light” system that’s now in place. Here’s everything you need to know about the UK travel rules. Can UK residents now travel abroad for a holiday? From May 17, residents of England, Scotland and Wales are allowed to go on vacation now that restrictions which made it illegal to travel abroad for non-essential reasons have ended. However, government officials have warned that the experience will be very different due to ongoing concerns around Covid-19. “This is a new way of doing things, and people should expect travel to be different this summer — with longer checks at the borders, as part of tough measures to prevent new strains of the virus entering the country and putting our fantastic vaccine rollout at risk,” UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said in a statement on Monday. What are the green list countries? The UK’s traffic light system for designating safe travel destinations, lists 12 countries or territories it classifies as “green” — meaning anyone traveling there will not have to quarantine on return. These are: Portugal (including the Azores and Madeira); Australia; New Zealand; Singapore; Brunei: Iceland; Faroe Islands; Gibraltar; Falkland Islands; South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands; St. Helena, Ascension & Tristan da Cunha and Israel. It’s worth noting that entry to Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei and the Faroe Islands is heavily restricted, so a destination’s appearance on the list doesn’t automatically mean that UK travelers can go there. Which countries can I visit if I live in England? English travelers are permitted to visit 12 “green” destinations without having to quarantine on their return, provided they take a pre-departure test, as well as a PCR test on or before day two of their arrival back in the UK. That said, some countries currently listed as green, such as New Zealand and Australia, are not permitting While travelers are also allowed to visit countries designated “amber” or “red,” the restrictions are much stricter, making them far less attractive options. Those who choose to visit places on the “amber” list, which include France, Greece, Spain and Italy, will have to quarantine for 10 days, take a pre-departure test and also get a PCR test on day two and eight of their isolation. However, “amber” destinations qualify for a test-to-release scheme, which means holidaymakers can take a PCR test after five days’ quarantine. If they receive a negative result, they will be permitted to go out into the community. Travelers from England who choose to visit “red” list destinations are required to check in to one of the UK’s quarantine hotels, at a cost of £1,750 (around $2,445) per adult when they return. They must also follow the same testing regulations as those arriving from “amber” destinations. Which countries can I visit if I live in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland? Scotland and Wales’ May 17 “green lists” are initially the same as England’s, but they might change according to the two countries’ needs. From May 24, people in Northern Ireland will be able to make non-essential trips to other parts of the Common Travel Area, which includes the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. The Northern Ireland government has yet to announce a relaxation of its international travel rules. How is the UK deciding which countries go on its lists? The UK government has said the decision-making is based on factors including a country’s Covid-19 transmission risk, its variant of concern transmission risk and its genomic surveillance capability. The UK’s Joint Biosecurity Centre has undertaken risk assessments for each destination, using data including total number of vaccination doses administered per 100 people. You can read more about the data used here, and about the methodology here. Should I book a summer holiday in a country on the amber list? The amber list contains some of the UK’s most-loved tourist destinations, such as Italy, Greece, Spain and France. The government guidance is that UK residents should not be booking holidays to “amber list” countries, or planning any nonessential travel, but it is no longer illegal to do so. The amber list is subject to change, which means countries may move to green or red at any time. Can I go on holiday in the UK? Travelers from England, Scotland and Wales are allowed to go anywhere within those countries and overnight stays are permitted at hotels, B&Bs and hostels. Nonessential travel in and out of Northern Ireland is still banned and tourist accommodation is yet to reopen. Those who plan to visit any of the Scottish islands are advised to take two lateral flow tests before their trip. Will I have to quarantine when I come home? Quarantine rules depend on whether the country you’re traveling to/from is on the “green,” “red” or “amber list.” If you are arriving into the country from a “red” list country, you will have to quarantine in a designated hotel upon arrival for 10 days at your own expense. Bookings must be made through this online portal. The charge for a single adult is £1,750. There are designated quarantine hotels in England and Scotland. If your final destination is in Wales or Northern Ireland, you will need to book a hotel in England or Scotland. If you are arriving from an “amber” list country, you will have to quarantine at home for 10 days. The other people in your household do not need to quarantine with you, unless they were also on your trip, or they have Covid symptoms, or they test positive. If you are arriving from a “green list” destination, quarantine is not a requirement. The quarantine requirements work in tandem with testing. It’s compulsory to take a Covid test on or before day two of your quarantine, and on or after day eight. If you are arriving in England from an “amber” country, it’s possible to end your quarantine early via the Test to Release system. This involves paying for a private test, if it’s negative, you can end your quarantine period. It’s not possible to do this until you’ve been in England for at least five days. If you’re arriving from a “red” or “amber” destination, your passenger locator form must contain details of your quarantine destination. You can get public transport to your place where you intend to quarantine, but the official guidance is to only do so “if you have no other option.” For the full rules, see here. During your quarantine, you will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace. When will the rules change? The UK government has said the “red”, “amber” and “green” list will be “continuously monitored” and updated every three weeks, so it’s worth keeping tabs on a destination before you depart. There’s no guarantee that a “green” country will stay that way. As for the system more generally — the guidance says travel restrictions will be formally reviewed on June 28, no later than July 31 and October 1, 2021. Will I need to be vaccinated to travel? Some countries, such as Iceland, are now open to international travelers who can present proof of vaccination. In the absence of this, sometimes a recent negative Covid-19 test, or proof of recovery from Covid-19 will also suffice. The rules frequently change from country to country and it is advisable to check destination-specific requirements before booking travel and closer to departure. Will I need a Covid test to travel? Yes. Travelers heading to approved destinations will need to take a pre-departure test, as well as a PCR test on or before day two of their arrival back in the UK. A test may be needed by the country you’re traveling to. Most destinations that are open to arrivals now require a recent negative PCR test before visitors can enter. Of the countries on the UK “green” list that are currently welcoming tourists or are feasible to reach from the UK, all require a negative PCR test. Some also require visitors to quarantine. When can UK citizens fly to the United States? The US is currently on the UK’s “amber” list. As explained above, the UK does not advise nonessential travel to “amber” countries. Plus, UK residents have been banned from entering the United States since March 2020 and this ban is still in place. When the initial “green list” destinations were announced, the World Travel & Tourism Council expressed disappointment that the US was not included and accused the UK government of being “too cautious.” Airlines have also been clamoring for the reintroduction of the transatlantic travel corridor, one of the world’s busiest air routes during pre-pandemic times. It’s unknown when the United States might make it onto the “green list” but it’ll likely coincide with a lifting of US restrictions on UK travelers. When will all restrictions be lifted? The UK has been gradually lifting its Covid-19 restrictions in tandem with its vaccine roll out. Restarting international travel on May 17 is part of Step 3 of England’s lockdown easing, which also includes reopening indoor venues like museums and holiday accommodation including hotels. England’s Covid-19 roadmap initially pinpointed June 21, 2021 as the date in which all Covid-19 restrictions could be lifted. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have not bookmarked a specific date for the ending of their respective restrictions. The June 21 date has always been TBC, and the UK government has been keen to emphasize that it’s not set in stone. There are currently concerns about a new Covid-19 variant originating from India, now circulating in the UK. It’s unknown when the traffic light system will be lifted, but official guidance says travel restrictions will be reviewed on June 28, and again no later than July 31 and October 1, 2021. The time has come for Aalto-Helsinki 2020 to finally take over the blog! Despite the COVID-19 situation, we have been busy with planning our project since February. We have brainstormed, read countless scientific articles, contacted experts and companies and had a lot of online meetings.

Now let us introduce ourselves:

Tytti

I did my Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering and decided to continue with Biotechnology to the Master’s studies. What fascinates me the most about biotechnology is that we can study and engineer the tiniest components of life and at the same time do industrial scale production with them. I applied to iGEM because I’m very interested in entrepreneurship and this project mimics all the different elements that are needed to develop a business. Apart from science, my favourite things in life are playing the guitar, spending time in nature and enjoying tea.

An adventurous trip you have been on? My most recent adventurous trip was to Norway because I had always wanted to visit the Arctic Ocean. There was this fishing boat where some Finnish guy had designed a sauna among other unusual things. After warming up in that sauna, I jumped from the deck to the ice-cold water. It was cool to actually experience the Arctic Ocean fully!

Your most extraordinary skill? Making perfectly thin “muurikka” crepes

What is your favourite board game? Pandemic, rising tide version.

I am currently studying in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology MSc program at the University of Helsinki. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Genetics at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), in Barcelona, Spain. I have always been interested in Genetics and Evolution of organisms. I believe that a lot has still to be learnt about evolution mechanisms to make insights that can be applied to healthcare and medicine. In my free time I like to exercise, I am a bouldering enthusiast and I also try to go running as much as I can. I love watching movies as well. I applied to iGEM because it seemed the perfect opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team and get to know people from different science fields. I consider myself an extroverted and curious person, so this could be the perfect opportunity to make new friends and learn from them. I thought it would also be the perfect opportunity to start a project on a topic of interest for all of us from scratch.

What is your favourite movie of all time? I don’t have a unique favorite movie, but my list of must watch movies is the following: Inception, Shutter Island, Green Book, The Good Will Hunting, The Shawshank Redemption, Jungle, Into the Wild, Mr. Nobody, Untouchable, Captain Fantastic, Interstellar, Donnie Darko, V for Vendetta and Dead Poets Society.

What kind of music do you listen to? I don’t only listen to one type of music, I like all types. Some international artists that I like are: Jonathan Wilson, John Frusciante, Steven Wilson, Eddie Vedder, Chet Faker, Gus Dapperton, Isaac Gracie, Billie Eilish, The Kooks, and Men I Trust among others. When talking about Catalan and Spanish music I usually listen to rumba, and rock, and also a bit of pop.

Your dream travel destination? My dream travel destinations would be: Iceland, Canada, Japan and Australia!

Amanda

I am studying at the Bachelor’s programme in Science in the chemistry study track at the University of Helsinki. In this year’s iGEM team I will work in the wet-lab but I am also involved with the funding, human practices and business. I applied to Aalto-Helsinki team to get the opportunity to take theory to practice and to learn a lot. In my free time I like cooking, baking, crocheting, knitting and gardening. I recently bought a greenhouse, where I will grow lots this summer!

What’s the most interesting or adventurous trip you have been on? Hard choice, but I would have to say the trip to Kenya with my family. So different and we saw a lot of animals and the whole Big Five!

What is your favourite board game now? And as a child? I think my favorite board game now is Dixit, but as a child I think it was Kimble.

Coffee or tea? Definitely tea, preferably green or white.

I study bioinformation technology at Aalto University. My minor is computer science. My role in our iGEM team is dry-lab and during the project I will be focusing on modelling as well as wiki development. I applied to iGEM because I wanted to be a part of a student driven team project and international competition. In my free time I enjoy programming, playing video games and going to the gym.

Your best tip to survive the quarantine? Outdoor activity, that does not require other people e.g. skateboarding and riding bicycle. Also playing video games with friends and watching tv series makes it easy.

What is your favourite movie of all time? Definitely Interstellar. After watching this for the third time I still get chicken skin. This almost three hour movie is a perfect combination of action, sci-fi and drama. Hans Zimmer did an astonishing job on music in this movie. I still keep one of the movie's soundtrack as my wake-up alarm. It's so good!

Who is your favourite scientist and why? Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku. I remember watching his show on Discovery Channel about black holes and teleportation. He got me interested in science and that's why he is my favourite scientist.

Daria

I am a second year master's student in Genetics and Molecular Biosciences, with focus on Molecular and Analytical Biosciences at the University of Helsinki. I have done my bachelor's in Biotechnology at the University of Silesia. I have experience in both environmental and biomedical research.

What was your favourite game to play as a child? Scavenger hunt. We lived right next to the forest, it felt good to be there for hours unsupervised.

What’s the grossest food you ever had to eat to be polite? Bananas. My culinary nemesis. Being grossed out by them is one of my earliest childhood memories.

What was the worst haircut you ever had? Bob at the age of 13. Thanks, mum.

Emilia

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from Tampere University and I’m now continuing my MSc (Tech) studies at Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering, major in Biotechnology. In my free time, I work out at the gym and love to cook. Also, I enjoy being outside in nature and spending time with my family and friends. I applied to iGEM because of my passion for life sciences and interest in challenging myself. I wanted to be a part of a powerful team of young professionals who share the same goal to achieve something meaningful. iGEM is a unique opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team and carry out a research project from start to finish. In this iGEM project, my main responsibility is working in the wet-lab and obtaining funding. I will also contribute to human outreach activities and updating the team’s social media. Furthermore, I hope to learn more about bioinformatics and modeling. I have some experience in biomedical research and I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge in the field of synthetic biology during the iGEM project. In the future, I wish to work with innovations which would somehow improve the quality of life.

What is your favorite time of the day and why? I love quiet mornings. I want to enjoy my morning coffee in peace and start my day without rushing. On the other hand, I also love spectacular sunsets, especially during the summer in the Finnish archipelago.

Your dream travel destination? Iceland. I would love to get to experience its unique nature, geysers and hot springs.

Gustav

I am currently finishing my first year of masters studies in biosystems and biomaterials engineering. I applied for iGEM since I have always been interested in cell mechanisms and the intriguing and complex principles behind these cellular-systems. In the Aalto-Helsinki team, I am primarily doing wet-lab and budgeting, which means that I’m currently mostly researching data and cell-mechanisms related to our project. I often find one hobby at a time for which I am very passionate until I get tired of it and eventually switch. Previous hobbies have included been sewing, chess and origami, but for the moment I most do horticulture.

What is your dream travel destination? I would love to see the Socotra Island and the strange species living there.

What makes you happy? A cup of good quality tea in the evening.

I study Molecular Bioscience at the University of Helsinki. My part in iGEM is mainly in the wet lab, but I also take part in social media and human practises. Outside of iGEM I enjoy reading and listening to music, as well as playing video games and D&D. I applied to iGEM because I wanted to do something different and concrete with my knowledge and skills. Besides molecular biology for the last year I’ve been studying Chinese and hope to be fluent in it one day.

Most interesting trip you have been on? A couple of years ago my friends and I went on a trip to Chongqing, China. The trip was very pleasant despite none of the locals knowing English, the hole in the outer wall of the room or there being no warm water for the first couple of days. One thing led to another and we somehow ended up as models for the hostel’s website, which meant a full-blown photoshoot with free drinks and food. Afterwards the hostel owner even treated us to delicious hot pot!

Also, the baby pandas were cute.

What is your favourite book of all time? The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman. The heroine of the story is refreshingly sensible, the plot innovative and the book builds an interesting world for the sequels. Would recommend to anyone who likes fantasy, paranormal, or is interested in librarians using spycraft to steal books from alternative worlds.

Coffee or tea? Most definitely tea. Jasmine tea is especially close to my heart.

Maria

I am a third-year physics student from the University of Helsinki, majoring in theoretical physics and minoring in computer science. My main motivation for applying to iGEM was to apply my science skills to a real-world problem. I’m also eager to learn how research projects work. In our project I will focus on modelling, human practices and social media. Besides science, I love languages, especially French. In my free time I enjoy ballet, board games, walks and reading.

What fictional world would you love to visit? With all the chaos in the world currently, I’d love nothing more than to escape to Moominvalley. Moominmamma’s pancakes and a worry-free life sound really appealing. I’d also like to visit Hogwarts, I have been waiting for my letter since I was 10.

What skill would you love to master? I’d love to master flying, imagine all the freedom it would bring! However, all my attempts so far have failed. I wonder why that is.

What is your favourite board game? Probably Battlestar Galactica or Dale of Merchants.

Nata

I study Biosystems and Biomaterials Engineering in the program of Life Science Technologies at Aalto University. I completed my Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology and Chemical Technology. In this journey of iGEM, I'm responsible for Human Practice activities and taking part in the wet-lab work as well. In my free time, when I'm not passionately studying life sciences or being fascinated by nature, I keep myself active with group gymnastics, friends and family. I applied to iGEM to be part of the fascinating project in the field of synthetic biology. I'm sure that we will learn precious skills of planning, team working and presenting as well as meet many wonderful people! Currently beside the iGEM, I'm working with seedlings of tomatoes and herbs that I will relocate in my glass house when it gets warmer.

Describe your dream job: In my dream job, I would be able to utilize the field of life sciences to help people and the environment at the same time.

My tip to survive this quarantine would be to spend time in nature and watch as many movies as possible. One of the movies should definitely be my all time favourite: The Intouchables.
