Stuart VI gun tractor ‘T287633’ “Beryl” by Alan Wilson Via Flickr: This was a turretless M5A1 Stuart light tank and was used to tow the ordnance QF 17-pounder. This example became part of the Imperial War Museum collection in 1972 and is seen on display in the Land Warfare Hall at Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK. 23rd May 2021

A British WW2 Cruiser, the A34 Comet!

Recognizing the need for an improved medium tank capable of dealing with heavy German armor, the British army put into development various models mounting the 76mm Royal Ordnance QF-17 pounder, the most powerful AT gun available to the Western allies. This resulted in the development of such tanks like the famous Sherman Firefly and A30 Challenger, but widespread usage of such tanks complicated supply lines and maintenance due to their mechanical differences from the mainstay of British cruisers, the Cromwell. And so, the Comet was born. 

Based off the reliable Cromwell chassis, the Comet had an upgraded armor scheme and turret, mounting a ‘77mm HV’ gun, essentially a 17-pounder with modified shell cartridges. Dual 7.7mm Browning MG’s provided extra defense against infantry. The Comet had over 4′’ of protective armor on the turret compared to the Cromwell’s 3′’, and featured an all-welded hull. Improved suspension and radio systems cemented it as an all-round improvement to the Cromwell. 

While it arrived quite late in the war, the Comet was fairly effective, and provided the basis for the postwar Centurion design.
