On my wrist this 6am, Indian-made HMT hand-winding. $13 shipped off the 'Bay. On a cheap surplus Chinese Baltany NATO band in olive green.
Jesus would approve. In a vision, He handed me a blue Orient Mako in exchange for my "junk watch" What a weird dream. I have no liking for Orient divers, sorry Jeez.
[edit : that's just a shadow on my arm]

Hands On Review - Spinnaker Bradner
Disclaimer: Spinnaker Watches sent Canadawatchgram this watch for free for the purposes of this review. It needs to be said upfront that a free watch doesn’t guarantee a good review (or even a review at all) – as impartiality is held above all else here. Had the watch not met my standards of quality, it would not have appeared here at all. But since you’re here and it’s here, you can guess where this is going.
First though for those new to watches, Spinnaker is one of multiple watch brands of Dartmouth Brands, which sells watches made by Hong Kong watch maker Solar Time, Ltd. They make sporty watches with a direct nautical influence with some named after key nautical personalities. All Spinnaker watches are sold at very affordable price points and most offer solid specs for the money.
The first Spinnaker I ever saw was a “Wreck”, a watch with an intentionally distressed look (hence the name), which I thought was a great idea though not something I was into at the time. Despite this exposure to Spinnaker, I’ve not had a chance to own another one as they’re not widely available in Canada. Fast forward to April 2019 when Spinnaker reached out directly and asked if I’d like to review one. A few messages later and Spinnaker has graciously provided me with a brand-new Bradner SP-5062-02 to review. Honestly, I respect a brand that is willing to offer up a free watch to a unsigned brand ambassador or influencer. It shows they’re confident in their product – but would the Bradner meet Canadawatchgram’s expectations?
Well, after wearing it for the past week I’m ready to deliver my verdict. In short – yes – it’s a winner.
So what’s the “Bradner”? The Bradner is a retro-styled dive-inspired dual-crown watch that bears a strong resemblance to the Dan Henry 1970 and a few vintage compressor divers from 70’s like the Wyler Dynawind Super Compressor. The Bradner is named after Hugh Bradner, an American Manhattan Project physicist who is credited with inventing the neoprene wetsuit. After the war Bradner investigated the problems encountered by frogmen staying in cold water for long periods of time. He developed a neoprene suit which could trap the water between the body and the neoprene, and thereby keep them warm. After his invention became known as the "father of the wetsuit." Bradner lived to the age of 92, passing away in 2008. It’s unknown how much input (if any) Bradner’s family had on this watch; but regardless it’s still a fitting tribute to an icon.
Let’s get the specs out of the way first:
·         42mm Stainless Steel Case
·         50mm Lug To Lug
·         14mm Thick
·         22mm Lug Width
·         Seiko NH35 Automatic Movement
·         180 Meters Water Resistant
·         Leather Strap
I’m not going to lie, the height and heft of this watch was surprising when I first unboxed it. This is definitely a watch you’ll feel on your wrist and yet at the same time it was extremely comfortable to wear. I took it on a number of trips during the May long weekend and not once did I find it to be uncomfortable, nor did I find it got in the way, despite it’s height.
This watch has a number of great features  - the first being the slightly domed sapphire crystal which is great to see (and really should be standard at this price point – ahem Seiko). On the case’s side is a screw-down crown at 4 o’clock that controls the time setting, while a non-screw down crown at 2 o’clock adjusts the bi-directional inner bezel. The bezel’s minute markers – like the hands and hour markers – are coated with lume, that while not the brightest I’ve come across (like Seiko or Szanto) – is still good enough to post on Instagram on Friday night after a short charge (which I have already!). The inner bezel combines with the curved edge of the sapphire crystal and delivers a really cool distorted three-dimensional retro look. A signed Spinnaker “yacht sail” logo adds a nice flair to the 4 o’clock crown. The overall finish is nearly perfect. I did not detect any blemishes or rough finishing anywhere on the watch.
The sunburst dial is also a looker – and though not “vintage”, it gives the watch a very premium dimension vs if it had been just a plain black dial. A nice touch by Spinnaker there. Expect others to notice this watch!
Water resistance is set at 180m, which is more than enough for anyone who isn’t planning on taking this on a serious dive. The leather strap is more water resistant than regular straps as well – it’s a hefty chunk of leather that Spinnaker claims is water-proof treated so the watch should not have any trouble handling any emergency water situation. A signed, brushed buckle completes the set up. I suppose at some point, I’ll be tempted to swap the strap for a Bond-nato but honestly, unlike many entry-level watch straps, this strap is a keeper.
Under the hood, The Spinnaker-decorated Seiko NH35 movement has been referred to as a “workhorse” a million times before. In short, it’s a reliable and robust movement based on the solid 4R36 calibre that appeared in 2011. It’s a 24 jewel movement with a 41 hour power reserve that hacks and handwinds. And while some entry-level automatic movements or watches like the Orient Mako can suffer from noisy rotors, the Bradner’s case design rendered this movement whisper quiet – which was a welcome change  - and I never notice it when it’s on my wrist.
So no watch is perfect and any review that doesn’t point out a product’s flaws simply wouldn’t be honest. So as far as cons go, there was one thing that does bother me about the Bradner and that’s the inner bezel crown. It’s not a screw down, so it’s held in place by friction and for me I felt with was waaay too easy to turn and often found it got moved around just through regular wear. Even shooting it I’d turn my wrist and the inner bezel would move. This would no doubt make it difficult to use it to time something in a busy environment. I also felt the Super Luminova faded fairly quickly even if it was bright at first. Lume is tricky though for an affordable watch collector who has been spoiled by Seiko’s amazing in-house lume – and I’d put this lume on par with a Citizen or Hamilton of around the same price. I’d personally love to see a future Spinnaker with tritium tubes.
In conclusion – for under $400 Canadian,  there’s a lot of watch here and it competes well with any number of microbrand divers that have recently flooded the market. Overall I’d give the Bradner 4.5 out of 5 stars. It’s perfect for anyone who appreciates value but are still looking for a watch that’s a little different from the normal Submariner or Fifty Fathoms microbrand dive watches you’ll find everywhere. It’s also perfect if you’re craving a vintage look but still want a modern size and specs. The stainless steel case, bulletproof movement and screw down crown should keep this watch running worry-free for decades.
For me this is a keeper – a nice addition to my collection that will be a great everyday wear or casual wear watch around the office. Thank you Spinnaker!

Orient Diver Mako II Automatic 200M FAA02001B9 Men’s Watch: Greater Ease and Accuracy in Syncing with a Busy Life
Tumblr media
Just when a considerable chunk of people thought it was over with entry- to mid-level, automatic mechanical watches - many disappointing experiences responsible and sometimes, the crazy price tags – the Orient Diver Mako II Automatic 200M FAA02001B9 Men’s Watch drew them in once again. They now resembled sharks scenting a prey! Catching a whiff of the Orient Diver Mako II Automatic 200M FAA02001B9 Men’s Watch was enough for them to avoid the ‘circling around’ part; instead, they went straight and took their bites. Quite a mouthful; it also tastes really, really good! It’s worth noting that the Orient Diver Mako II Automatic 200M FAA02001B9 Men’s Watch is equipped with the F6922, the new, in-house caliber; an upgrade desired to the cal. 46943. It was an older platform from the ‘70s with several big shortcomings despite its robustness. It did not have any hacking and hand-winding facilities; there was no way to quick-set the day. The F6922 is a remedy to all that. It includes all these critical features. Everything is managed via the crown in the Orient Diver Mako II Automatic 200M FAA02001B9 Men’s Watch, resulting in a streamlined, beautiful-looking wrist wear without any extraneously protruding part. Aesthetic standpoints are quite a few, the most prominent being the red-tipped second hand. The watch has a high contrast display, the kind you need when water is splashing all over either from below or from above. Sometimes together! And many of the times, it’s not clear. The placement of the Orient crest upon the dial is tasteful. The attractive cursive scripts (12 and 6) precede the water resistance rating figures (below) and the crest on the top. The sword-style hands are well-cut, well-shaped and well-finished. The flat mineral crystal covering the dial sits flush with the bezel around. The unidirectional, rotating, stainless steel bezel has the 120-click mechanism. It’s rugged metal offering maximum resistance to brutal, physical forces. Being a 200 meter-rated diver, the Orient Diver Mako II Automatic 200M FAA02001B9 Men’s Watch features a screw-down crown, signed with the Orient Mens Watches logo. Without crown, the whole watch 41.5mm across and is 13mm thick. That’s fairly small if compared to a modern diving watch, but it’s perfectly sized for wearing it elsewhere when you are not going diving. The Orient Diver Mako II Automatic 200M FAA02001B9 Men’s Watch watch is comfortable to wear and half the credit goes to its excellent stainless steel bracelet! The rest goes to its case. Its hollow end links help to ease the weight further. The Mako II is not overbuilt like many other divers. The Orient Mako Diver Automatic Men’s Watch can be worn once in 40 hours to keep it running; else, just hand wind every 40 hour. The Mako’s seconds-hand stops when the crown is pulled, allowing for a perfect time setting.

10 of The Best Affordable Daily Desk Dive Watches for Men
November 7, 2018 By Dappered Team | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Here's why.
Desk Diver: A dive style watch that may carry with it significant water resistance and classic good dive-style looks, but rarely if ever is submerged in water. Due to their versatility and overall toughness, they get worn to work (hence, “desk”) as well as during the owner’s leisure time. Here are ten of the best affordable options out there, right now.
Still almost certainly the best bang-for-the-buck watch on the market today. For about $40 you get 200m of water resistance, a stainless steel case, and a rotating bezel which feels much more expensive than many other watches in the under $100 category. Plus, at a glance its classic good looks make it look like it cost a heck of a lot more than a quick trip to the ATM. Even the stock rubber strap that it comes on is decent (soft-ish, not rigid plastic). Throw an aftermarket strap on it and you’ll get more style points.
Many a man has fallen victim to watch collecting thanks to this gateway drug. Good feel and solid, 200m water resistance. Nice stainless steel band and case. Automatic movement. Exhibition case back. 40mm case dial. Also looks great on a rubber/silicone or leather strap. 4/5 stars on Amazon after more than 2400 reviews.
An obvious (some would say shameless) homage to the Tudor Black Bay. Every aspect of the watch aside from the movement and the branding is clearly inspired by the Black Bay. 41mm wide with 22mm lugs. The machining is accurate, the colors are great, and the dial looks extremely well done. Unlike most Chinese mechanicals, this watch uses a Japanese Miyota 8215 movement, which makes it more durable and accurate than the cheap Chinese movement. Full review here.
Automatic movement that hacks and hand winds (the previous incarnation did neither). 200m water resistance. 120 click bezel helps keep track of elapsed time. Classic dive-watch looks. Not everyone will like the shined up inserts on the bracelet, but it’s more subtle than many other competitors.
A legend and for good reason. 42mm case, 200m water resistance, screw down crown, and a dependable Seiko automatic movement beating inside. Seiko’s own Hardlex crystal protects the dial. Good lume. Doesn’t hack or hand wind, but it’s really quite comfortable on the wrist and the 120 click bezel is good and solid. Shown above on a stainless bracelet, which’ll run you a bit more. Also available, as the 009, in a red and blue scheme.
Hacks, hand winds, has a sapphire crystal, a 120 click bezel, solid end links, and the best of both the Mako and Ray worlds when it comes to the looks on the dial. A little tough to find sometimes, but is available at post time direct through Orient. 41.5mm case size is wearable by most. Full review can be found here. Orient just did away with their codes and promos pricing strategy. So if you’re buying direct through them, no more of that business. Just $315 out the door. That’ll please some, not others.
These things are a total break from Seiko’s usual curvy designs, and has a really unique geometry that makes it both round and square. In addition to its neat lines, it’s also a bigger watch, so it definitely makes a statement. The automatic movement is hand-windable and hacking, and has that great sweep you get from a mechanical movement. Blue option has a wave pattern to the dial that gets darker the farther down you go. Black has a really intricate waffle texture pattern to the dial. Full review here.
Swiss automatic movement. 300m water resistance. Double gasket screw-crown. Sapphire crystal. Of course it’s an homage. But most dive watches are. Has gone on sale for 20% off in the past during a pre-order event.
It’s heavy (some would say too heavy, at almost half a pound on the bracelet which also happens to be hard to find), it’s built like a tank, and it’s ISO certified as a dive watch. Yes it’s a quartz, but the Marathon SAR watches are all built on government contracts and designed for search and rescue/salvage diving, so don’t be afraid of it getting broken or damaged, and it still looks classy enough to wear to dinner.
We’re obviously on the high end here, but compared to the luxury market Christopher Ward watches are downright affordable. Oozing with retro-goodness. Swiss made Automatic GMT movement. 41mm case, 150m water resistance and deep-stamped Trident backplate. And since the movement is only 4.1mm high – the C65 Trident GMT measures in at just 12.05mm tall. Should slide under shirt cuffs with ease.
We’ve all had one. Maybe it’s that Invicta we started this post with. Maybe it’s a brand like the Wenger shown above. Maybe it’s something you picked up off eBay or a at a flea market. The point is, if you like the looks of it, it feels good, and it tells the time? Who cares what the watch snobs say. Wear it and wear it well.
Huge thanks to contributor Zach S. who contributed quite a bit to this post. Click here for Zach’s 5 Favorites. Also, before some of you guys out there (you know who you are) start complaining about the price range of the ten options above, keep in mind that luxury watches can run thousands upon thousands of dollars. Is that absurd? Most around here would say yes. But that’s also the reality of the wristwatch market. So one could argue that $42 – $1100 is actually “affordable” in a relative sense.
