My heroin addiction

The devil wearing a halo

The first time I did heroin I knew right then and there what love was and what it felt like. I’m not going to get in to my childhood upbringing. I’m just saying I never felt actual love until I tried heroin. That first line, that first high on heroin was love to me. I instantly got butterflies. I have never felt anything like it before. I could go in to details about all the drugs I’ve done, enjoyed, been addicted to. This one is about heroin.

Nothing compared to heroin. It was cheap at first. And that high, nothing compared to that high. It was better than the day I lost my virginity. It was better than an orgasm. Heroin was just better than anything and everything. I had to have heroin everyday. I had to feel that love. I loved heroin and I thought heroin loved me back. Heroin was like a best friend at first. It didn’t judge you, it was there for you. It was your other half. It made me feel so alive at first.

I dropped everyone I was close to. My family, my friends. I didn’t need them, I had heroin. I started hanging out with other heroin addicts cause they understood. But at the end of the day we didn’t care about one another, we just cared about getting heroin. Basically we were using buddies. Partners in crime. We weren’t friends. We were junkies trying to get our next fix. I never wanted to come down off heroin.

The thrill of being in the dangerous areas of the St. Louis streets was a bonus and a whole other high. You felt invincible. Alley ways, run down motels, vacant houses. Just being at the dope mans house made you feel like a badass. Especially being a small white girl. I know I’m not the only girl Heroin addict that has felt this way.

Yeah heroin was cheap at first but you don’t realize how much you’re really spending 2-3 times or more everyday. I would pull out hundreds of dollars. Then just $100. Then $80. Then $60. Then $40. Then $20. Then nothing, over $50,000 dollars gone. That didn’t stop me though. I started stealing from hardware stores, the mall, super markets, anywhere I could steal and return items to get gift cards to sell to the gift card buyer off of natural bridge between kingshighway and union. I pawned everything I owned. Electronics, jewelry. I would break in to my family and friends and pawn their things. I didn’t care. I just wanted my dope. Sober molly never would’ve done bullshit like this.

Being dope sick was the worst. I never understood why heroin was doing this to me. I thought heroin loved me. I didn’t realize heroin was low key trying to destroy me. Basically laughing in my face. I would lay on the bathroom floor in my own vomit, sweating, getting cold chills, muscles aching, screaming for the pain to stop. I would huff air duster to hold me over until morning time when the dope man started serving again. 8am every morning on the dot I would call. I would already have the money from the day before cause once I got my fix I would start making more money for more.

Junkie molly didn’t care. I didn’t care who I was hurting. Not even myself. All I cared about was fucking heroin. Heroin took over me. I had to have it every day to feel normal. To get ready each day, to shower, to clean, to go to the store, to do anything. I was so dependent on heroin that I was no long molly. I was heroin. I was a shitty person.

The first time I overdosed, that didn’t stop me. I was so scared to be without dope. The first time I was robbed at gun point didn’t stop me. Living in the streets didn’t stop me. I’m telling you once you’re hooked, it’s got you. That’s all you think about 24/7. I’m not exaggerating. It’s like an abusive boyfriend. You’re scared to leave, you know it’s going to keep happening but you’re not going to walk away cause you still love him. I had a pretty smile before I did heroin. My smile made me feel confident. I didn’t know heroin was rotting my teeth. I remember sitting in the car with a friend we both just got done doing a shot of dope. My tooth was hurting before the shot and I started messing with it and my tooth cracked in half. My teeth were rotted so bad I am now missing two back teeth because of heroin. Cute right? It’s fucking disgusting. I didn’t eat, I was under 100lbs, I was disgustingly skinny. But on heroin you think you look good, like you’re hot shit.

Eventually you stop caring about how you look. You’ll go days without showering, getting dressed, don’t bother with your make up, brushing your hair. My hair was in knots. I had dreads. You stop giving a fuck about yourself cause all you care about is heroin. Heroin was everything to junkie molly. Heroin was life. You didn’t want to be dope sick. Heroin basically became a job.

People I was using with were dying in front of me, but I still kept using. That’s insanity. I lost my uncle to heroin. I still kept using. I lost everything, I still kept using. I would nod out at the wheel while I was driving home from picking up dope. I could’ve killed someone. Junkie molly didn’t care though at the time. I did a hit and run twice. Sober me never would’ve done this. But junkie molly was worried about going to jail and the cops taking her heroin. The cops were waiting at my house the second time. I then got charge with felony possession of a controlled substance and a bunch of traffic tickets. They took me to jail that day I don’t remember going to jail cause I was so high I just woke up there the next morning and they released me. Guess where I went after they released me. Straight to the dope mans house.

Finally I realized I have a problem. I’m a junkie. I don’t want to live like this anymore. Heroin was fucking hell. I needed help. I called my grandma and begged her to help me. She got me a bed date at bridgeway inpatient rehab. The bed date was 2 weeks away, I planned on getting high everyday until that bed date. This was a blessing in disguise, the cops were called on me for warrants so I sat in jail till that bed date. I had to detox in jail and it was fucking hell. I thought about heroin everyday in there. When I got released the day of my bed date I was going to go down to the dope mans house one more time but I went straight to bridgeway. That last high could’ve killed me.

When I got out of inpatient I continued to do outpatient. I was doing so good I love recovery. 2 months later I decided to take care of all my legal troubles, get my life back. I really thought I was going to prison cause I managed to catch 2 felony possession charges. Instead they gave me the option of drug court. If I finish drug court those felonies will be off my record. I’ve been in drug court for about 6 months, I’m in the last phase- phase 3. I’m doing really well. I’m working hard to get my shit together. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss heroin, I still think about it a lot. But I refuse to go back. I’m telling you once you’re hooked it’s got you. It’s all you think about.

I’ve been clean since July 24, 2016. Asking for help was the best thing I ever did in my life. Today I’m thankful to be clean and that I’m no longer a junkie. Instead I’m a recovering addict. I’m thankful for my family, bridgeway, the friends I’ve made in bridgeway, narcotics anonymous, drug court, the vivitrol shot. Today my recovery means everything to me. I’m taking life one day at a time and today I chose to live clean. Today I actually care about those around me, myself and my life. Heroin is the devil wearing a halo. Heroin is not a joke. This shit will destroy you and take everything from you. This is a dangerous drug. It’s never to late to get help though.
