#PNG - West Papua

“Our nation is still an emerging economy, we cannot afford the standoff between our trading partners,” James Marape told the Guardian while on a visit to Sydney for a petroleum and mining conference.[...]
US President Joe Biden invited leaders of a number of Pacific nations to Washington for a US-Pacific summit in September, the first summit of its kind, in what was widely seen as a response to China’s growing engagement in the region.
Marape said that during the visit he told Biden that the US seemed “very far away” and was not a significant trading partner for Papua New Guinea and that until PNG had been able to diversify its export destinations, the country could not afford to sacrifice any of its current trading relationships.
“So keep your debates to yourselves and your fights to yourselves. Your enemy is not my enemy, that’s a line that is emerging in the Pacific. We will not compromise democracy, we will not compromise our relationships with the west as far as democratic values are concerned, but at the same time we will never compromise our trading relationships.”[...]
“The Chinese to be fair, they have never, in the last three years I’ve been prime minister, they have never pushed that space in terms of [...] setting up a military base in PNG,” he said. “When I met President Xi Jinping on the margins of Apec, there was no conversation about security arrangements, it was purely conversations on commerce and trade.”
Asked if he had any interest in a conversation with China on security, Marape said there was “no need to do that”.
“I think our current arrangements on security with other nations like Australia are satisfactory, they’re closer to us, easier for us to have access to.”[...]
Anthony Albanese was due to travel to Papua New Guinea next week, on what would have been the first visit to the country by an Australian prime minister since 2018, but there are now doubts as to whether the trip will go ahead, following Albanese testing positive for Covid on Monday.
Marape said Papua New Guinea was “ready to welcome him, Covid or not”.
“We are the least vaccinated nation in the Pacific, I don’t know about the world, but definitely in the Pacific, so if he’s tested positive, it’s his decision to make whether he travels or not, but … our entire country is excited for his visit.”

Thursday, August 22 - Aloutau, Papua New Guinea
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today was our first day in Papua New Guinea and our weather was definitely mixed - sudden downpours and then a bit of sun, followed by more rain and sun. Aloutau was not on our original schedule, but we needed to come here to pass immigration, and we also had a tour. Because this part of Papua New Guinea (PNG from here on) is a mixture of locals and hill people, many of them young and unemployed, we were told not to venture out on our own, so anyone who wanted to leave the ship pretty much went on the included tour.
With on and off rain, we first drove to a high point to overlook the bay, and then drove back down to the market in our many small vans. A few had air conditioning, but most of the vans were fresh air only. The market was next to the bus station, which consistently of several covered walkways where other small mini-buses provided the transportation to places near and far. The signs around warned people about not spitting betel nut juice, and various other infringements.
The market itself has several sections - we walked past lots of wonderful looking produce, as well as a whole sector selling peanuts. The prices were very reasonable - one Kina (local currency) is worth about 26 cents, so many things were under a dollar for a bunch of bananas, or some chard or cabbage. There were lots of baskets for sale, and unlike in many countries we have been, single use plastic bags were not in evidence. Most people brought their own or purchased ones like we find at Trader Joe's. There were also other sections for meat and seafood, but we ran out of time and had to leave for our next stop.
Milne Bay (Aloutau) saw some heavy fighting during WWII, and we visited a memorial to the mainly Australian and PNG soldiers who died here. PNG only received independence in 1975 from Australia and is still a Commonwealth nation. Originally the island of New Guinea was split three ways - the west was Dutch, the northern half of the east was German, and the southern half of the east was British. Of course, this ignores the fact that there were already many groups of people with numerous languages who already lived here. The British eventually let Queensland in Australia control "their" portion, and after WWI the German half was also "given" to Australia, although it was managed under a League of Nations mandate. All of this is to say that the legacy of Australian rule is driving on the left, and English as the common language, since there are so many dialects and languages in the diverse groups.
After our visits to the market and memorial we drove a little way out into the country, where a " village" has been created to allow for performances and interactions with several hill tribes, who come down to perform and share a bit of their culture. We had performances from two groups - quite different from each other - and also a cooking demonstration of some of the local foods. Everything was quite tasty, although the taro did take a lot of chewing. There were also fruits, including the best papaya I have ever eaten.
There were also some local craftspeople and items such as this dugout canoe. Lest one think that these are things of the past - we saw lots of men fishing from similar ones in the bay by our ship. I bought a little carved dolphin and Russ got a little turtle from one of the vendors - he was working on another carving in between sales.
We headed back to the ship for a late lunch, and a relaxing afternoon, since we really didn't want to go back out, considering all the warnings. We are hoping for a different experience tomorrow, when we will be in the Conflict Islands, which are privately owned, and away from the mainland. Our weather is also supposed to be better.

The West Indies beat PNG by 5 wickets because of a late surge of their first recreation after the minnows gave them a scare. The West Indies stuttered and stumbled earlier than lastly recording a five-wicket victory over minnows Papua New Guinea (PNG) of their first Group C match of the ICC Males's T20 World Cup in Guyana. With a modest goal of 137, the two-time former champions had been overwhelmed by some clever and disciplined PNG bowling in Sunday's cricket match. The co-hosts fell to 97 for 5 with simply 4 overs remaining earlier than all-rounder Roston Chase's unbeaten 27-ball 42 helped the co-hosts cross the road with an over to spare. Their unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 40 got here from simply three overs and denied PNG one of many largest upsets, not simply within the eight editions of this match, however in all of worldwide cricket, provided that this was solely their second look in a world match. having misplaced all three matches of their debut within the 2021 T20 World Cup. “Based mostly on what we noticed when PNG batted, it was all the time going to be troublesome for the batsmen coming in now, so I gave myself a while to offer myself the perfect probability potential and again up my expertise to place the ball away as soon as it got here in.” Chase mentioned. The participant of the match conceded 26 runs in 4 turning overs and in addition took an excellent catch at backward level to take away PNG captain Assad Vala. Vala led the way in which with the ball for the underdogs by taking two for 28 from 4 turning overs after seamer Alei Nao struck at first of West Indies' chase with the wicket of Johnson Charles' first ball. That preliminary success ignited the Papuans regardless of the pictures of Brandon King (34) and Nicholas Pooran (27). With the pair inside 11 deliveries of one another and captain Rovman Powell following, PNG felt an upheaval of monumental proportions earlier than Chase redressed the stability when he joined Russell following the swift demise of Sherfane Rutherford. "We had been 10 to fifteen runs away from what would have been a extra aggressive goal, however after shedding so many early wickets, it was nonetheless a great effort," Valla mentioned, reflecting on the slender defeat. “We're pleased with the combat we confirmed in attempting to defend that whole. “This is a chance for us and we're trying ahead to the problem of taking part in our greatest cricket in tournaments and in opposition to groups like this.” Earlier, Sese Bau's belligerent 50 off 43 balls (six fours, one six) represented PNG's solely vital contribution to the overall of 136 for eight after they had been put into bat. Wicketkeeper Kiplin Doriga (27 not out) and Valla (21) had been the opposite gamers who crossed the 20 mark with quick bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Russell main the West Indies effort with two wickets every. “It's important to give credit score to PNG as a result of they performed good cricket and their plans had been easy, however in the long run it was essential for us to get the 2 factors,” a relieved Powell mentioned. “We must be higher in all three departments of the sport. [batting, bowling and fielding]. Immediately we didn't stay as much as the extent we anticipated of ourselves and we've to enhance for the subsequent video games.” (Al Jazeera)

New Zealand calls on Papua rebels to release pilot kidnapped a year ago
Tumblr media
New Zealand has called for the immediate release of pilot Phillip Mehrtens who was taken captive by fighters in Indonesia’s troubled Papua province a year ago.
Mehrtens, who was flying a single-propeller plane for Indonesia’s Susi Air, was snatched from his aircraft on February 7 last year by a group of fighters from the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPN-PB) who said he would only be released if Papua was given its independence.

The group, led by regional commander Elias Kogoya, later released images and videos showing Mehrtens surrounded by rebels – some armed with guns and others with bows and arrows – in remote forested areas.
New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said the New Zealander had been providing “vital air links and supplies to remote communities” at the time he was kidnapped.
“We strongly urge those holding Phillip to release him immediately and without harm. His continued detention serves the interests of no one,” Peters said in a statement to mark a year since the pilot was taken.
The incident in the remote highlands region of Nduga, one of the most restive areas of the province, drew renewed attention to one of the world’s least-known and longest-running conflicts.
Papua, whose people are ethnically Melanesian, occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea – just 200km (124 miles) north of Australia – and shares a land border with Papua New Guinea (PNG).
A low-level battle for independence has been under way since Indonesia took control of the resource-rich former Dutch colony after a controversial referendum in 1969.
Peters said New Zealand had been working with Indonesian authorities and others towards securing Phillip’s release.
“Let me be absolutely clear,” he said. “There can never be any justification for hostage taking.”
Peters’s statement came after the TPN-PB, the armed wing of the Free Papua Movement (OPM), said they had asked Kogoya to release Mehrtens, although they gave no timeframe for when that might happen.
“We plan to proceed with the release based on humanity,” TPN-PB spokesperson Sebby Sambom was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency.
“We believed that most Australians and New Zealanders support Papua’s independence,” he added. “We don’t want to be blamed by international community if the pilot dies while he is being held hostage by our fighters.”
Peters said Mehrtens had been able to contact some friends and family before Christmas and had assured them that he was well.
New Zealand was “exploring all avenues” to bring the pilot home, he added.
Indonesia deployed police and soldiers into the highland district in an attempt to rescue Mehrtens shortly after he was taken captive and there have been a number of clashes since.
Outsiders, including foreign journalists, international organisations and diplomats require special permission from Jakarta to visit the region, which is the location of one of the world’s largest gold and copper deposits.
There has been a surge in violence in Papua since 2018 when rebels killed 24 Indonesian men who were building a major new road to connect the coast with the highlands.
United Nations human rights experts have expressed concern about the deteriorating situation.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, August 19-21 - Sea Days
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We've had three relaxing days sailing from the Indian Ocean into the Pacific Ocean. We started through the Torres Strait yesterday (Tuesday) morning starting at about 7AM, when we picked up our pilot. The strait is only 80 miles wide, but contains 280 small islands, most uninhabited, so navigating through it is a bit of a challenge, even with today's sophisticated instruments. I can't imagine the ships of previous centuries finding their way through with all the small rocks and sandbars. At the shallowest we had only about 7 meters of depth beneath the keel.
The strait separates that part of Australia that sticks up to the north from Papua New Guinea, although the islands all belong to Australia. We had very strong headwinds of over 20 mph, which increased as we came past the most narrow part, so they closed our bow deck for the duration. We passed Thursday Island, nestled back from our path a bit, and it has a small airport, and is also where some small cruise ships dock from time to time. We could see quite a few sailboats moored in the harbor.
The pilot finally got off around 2PM, and headed back to perhaps lead another ship through. We had expected fairly heavy traffic, as this is the shortest way from the east of Australia through to Indonesia and Singapore, but we only saw one commercial ship, and one other pilot boat, heading west.
As usual there were numerous lectures, including one on the Coral Triangle. The center of this area is Raja Ampat, where we were for three days. The Triangle contains 75% of the coral species on earth - over 600 - and over 2000 species of reef fish. This is ten times the number as in the Caribbean! We also learned that coral gets its color from the symbiotic algae that grows on it, and that coral bleaching is actually when the coral expels the algae because of some stressor. Since 90% of the energy coral gets comes from the algae, bleaching can lead to the death of the coral if the stressor is not removed. If it is removed, the coral can reacquire algae and carry on. That's easier if the stressor is a storm, and much harder if the stressor is continually warming waters.
We also had another caviar deck party today, which was fun as always. We met another couple who are going all the way with us to Chile - we will have at least three more of these parties, and probably more. As a result, we don't feel bad if we miss something like this, as there will likely be another one. That's not always true of the lectures, and although they are able to be viewed in our suite later, the ones available are only for the current voyage.
We also had an interesting talk on Amelia Earhart, and the theory (pretty likely) that she crash landed on an island south of her original destination of Howland Island. Bones and a sextant case were found shortly after her disappearance, but were later lost in a fire in the facility where they were stored. Since, however, items like a jar of freckle cream, a shoe similar to one Amelia was known to be wearing, and other things have turned up, which point to this being her ultimate destination. We will be sailing quite close to this area later.
Tomorrow we will be at a dock in Papua New Guinea, where we have an included tour. We have been warned not to go out on our own, so will probably come back to the ship in the afternoon and relax. Most of the places we will visit in PNG are islands, and as such are safer than the mainland, where folks have moved down from the hills, but have no work, and join gangs, and unfortunately cause trouble. This stop was not on our original itinerary, but was needed for us to clear immigration.
