I am very much drawn to the infrared photography genre. There’s something about capturing what the human eye cannot see and be able to see a new type and world of beauty beyond your own eyes. There’s something ethereal about the Images, almost from another world. It was originally used in dentistry and medical uses for decay and varicose vein detection before it was used as a way to capture mainly landscapes, but also other types of images for creative purposes. I would describe it as abstract even though it’s a real image of a place or a thing, it’s another representation of what is truly seen, and reimagined. It also comes under the umbrella of fine art for the same reasons, and there are many different areas of photography you could use infrared in order to get the same photographic results to landscape. I think it would mostly be seen in photobooks, on social media and in exhibitions as a way of showcasing the beauty of the world.

Paolo is a photographer and art director, born 1991, from Turin, Italy. He co founded a communications agency called no panic focused on ‘brand narrative and digital communication’. He gained a degree in visual communication at the polytechnic university of Turin in 2014, and from then on has been interested in otherworldly imagery, specifically in the area of infrared. ‘ a fusion of science and creativity that captures the electromagnetic radiation of light which wavelengths are not visible to the human eye. He is currently undertaking a project using this technique to create a series called ‘infraland’. He has been exhibited in exhibitions, solo and as part of a group in places such as New York, Milan, Berlin and Paris. Publications have also been featured in the likes of wired, vanity fair and vogue to name a few.

I chose this image as it is a traditional landscape. I absolutely love the colours that have been captured by the technique. There’s something about the combination of blue and red, being so harmonious and luxurious to look at aesthetically. They call for a very successful pairing when thinking about the visuals of the image. I also love that the image is also split in half, creating a balance, split in colour and textures. The level of detail in the foreground is very impressive also helps create a sense of calm with the water and being able to see the flow.

"I decided to capture with poetry a surprising collection of pictures of Central Park’s landscapes, in a series named "Infrared NYC". Using a infrared filter which reverses the real colors to transform them into red, pink, my aim is to show the park under a new perspective, underlines its majestic and the contrast between magic landscapes and skyscrapers of the Big Apple."
