The Great Shift: Scholar Athletes

No one expected the Great shift to effect the world in so many ways. From large cities to small villages, all aspects of life needed to adjust in order to make way for a world with people in displaced bodies! However, there were some places that offered a sense of normalcy still. Schools!

Sure there were a lot of people of a variety of ages now attending college, but after a few semesters seeing elderly folks partying with the college freshmen it soon became common place to see these pillars of higher education accepting one and all!

For Oliver and Mitch, post Shift college had the second chance both men were looking for. Oliver, formerly Oleksy, was an 18 year old Ukranian teen who was hoping to apply to an American college this year. Finding himself in the body of a buff Instagram model in L.A. certainly helped him get there a lot faster! He marveled at his new height and fair skin! For the first day he couldn’t pry himself away from a mirror before trying to survive in this crazy swapped world.

Mitch on the other hand was a retired 68 year old plumber in Spain who was working hard most of his life. He never had a chance to put his wits to work since he started plumbing at such a young age. So waking up inside a huge gym in Ontario was certainly not what he expected one morning. He also didn’t expect to be in such a fit body! Bulbous chest now replaced by bulky muscle! Luckily all the other gym patrons were equally in awe of their new forms and it wasn’t long before harmless exploration turned into some passionate introspection.

Both men found themselves entering the University of Ottowa once things settled down. A few admissions and college  orientations later, the two found themselves as roommates! Their new bodies were roughly the same age, but their share intercontinental shifts became a turning point for a great friendship. Not only were both new young men exceptionally bright, but with their newfound athleticism the coach of the Ottawa Braves Football team approached them one day about joining their team! Oliver and Mitch assumed he’d meant soccer, but upon being thrown the ball they were soon corrected. 

The coach saw potential in those two as they seemed to pick up on the sport quite quickly. Before long they were making up the starting lineup of a new improved university team filled with a variety of strong men from all walks of life. 

A lot of people often asked Oliver how he managed to handle school work and practice all in his first year at school! He’d simply reply. “Well I’d been studying for this my whole life so that helps! But I couldn’t do it without my supportive team and my new boyfriend!”

Turns out one more thing that the two shifted students had in common was an unrealized attraction to men that they could finally satisfy. So now the two smartest athletes at O.U. are also apart of the LGBT Student Union on campus! There’s not telling where these guys will be going next!

Hi, all!

Sorry for disappearing on you guys. There hasn’t been a historical figure in season 13 as of yet, but I’ll try to tide you over with some interesting (and at times super weird) Canadian laws.

- In 1996, a law was passed in Winnipeg where you are allowed to sit on an alligator and poke it or even pull its tail. Neither of these counts as illegally provoking or agitating it...but it is illegal to provoke it into a fight. (Yeah, I don’t get it)

- In Toronto, it is illegal to let pigeons to stray, roost, perch, or rest on anything that is not owned by you. 

- It used to be illegal to drag a dead horse down Yonge Street in Toronto on a Sunday. (That’s...oddly specific)

- In St. John’s, Newfoundland, it is illegal to keep a cow in the house. 

- From 1885 to 1996 in Calgary, it was illegal to throw snowballs or ice. (Probably didn’t work since Canada has a lot of snow...)

- Any adult who alarms the Queen on purpose when she visits can spend up to 14 years in jail.

- It is still considered an offence to swear or insult someone in Ontario’s national parks. (Canadians take politeness seriously, lol)

- Dueling is illegal everywhere in Canada. Even accepting the challenge could land you two years in jail. 

- In Montreal, you cannot wash your car in the street. (Seriously, who does that?)

- There is a sound bylaw in Ottawa that puts a limit between 48 to 55 decibels. The average birdsong is about 50 to 60 decibels, so that makes it illegal too. Even bees buzzing is also illegal, since a large group would make about 180. (Good luck enforcing that)

- You cannot keep a boat or trailer in sight of your neighbours in Kanata, Ontario. No, not even on your driveway. 

- If a newspapers reports something it knows is not true, it is illegal and punishable of up to two years in jail. (wink wink, nudge nudge)

- In Quesnel, British Columbia, you must have an outside privy (bathroom, basically) at least 20 feet from your house. It still stands, despite the fact most of Canada has indoor plumbing. 

- It used to be illegal for snowmen in Souris, Prince Edward Island, to be taller than 76 centimetres.

- Taxi drivers in Halifax must wear socks. (Why? Good question)

- It is forbidden to be masked or in disguise in Chicoutimi, Quebec. (Sorry, superheroes)

- In all of Canada, it is illegal to pay for a 26-cent item with 26 pennies. The limit is 25 cents. As for nickels, you cannot pay more than $5 worth. As for dimes, the limit is $10. Whew, got that?       

- It is illegal in Quebec for margarine to be the same colour as butter. In fact, Quebec might be the only place in the world where this law is still in effect. 

- In Vancouver, an ice cream truck cannot use amplified sound systems. (Then how do you know they’re coming?)

- And my personal favourite: In Nova Scotia, it is illegal to let a chicken cross a road.

Spirit of 69: dB Customs’ Suzuki XR69 race replica

The Suzuki XR69 holds a special place in classic superbike lore. That puts it well inside the wheelhouse of Canadian builder Darren Begg, who specializes in fast bikes from the late 70s and 80s. He’s just finished piecing together this stunning XR69 replica—with a slightly period incorrect spec sheet.

“It’s not a traditional GS1000-engined XR69,” he admits, “but I’m not much of a traditionalist. So it’s my interpretation of this historic racer.”

Darren operates as dB Customs out of Ottawa, Canada. He’s also a dealer for a few top-shelf parts manufacturers, so he’s a master of piecing together the best of the best on his projects. His idea here was to build a series of ten street-able XR9 replicas using his favorite components—plus a very special chassis.

This one’s the first in the series, as the number on the side of the fairing suggests.

The XR69 was originally developed by Pops Yoshimura and Suzuki, and cleaned up when it hit the racetrack in 1980. It was powered by an eight-valve motor derived from the GS1000—but Darren’s replica borrows its motor from elsewhere in Suzuki’s back catalog.

Powering this retro-fabulous superbike is the motor from a 1997 Suzuki Bandit 1200. Darren refreshed the motor and topped it off with an early GSX-R750 head: “It has more of a down draft design, with smaller combustion chambers for added compression,” he explains.

Inside are the cams from an oil-cooled GSX-R1100 and Kibblewhite springs, with spark coming from a Dyna 2000 ignition. The engine breathes through a set of gorgeous Yoshimura TMR-MJN carbs with K&N filters, and exhales through a lightweight four-into-one titanium exhaust system from Racefit.

The chassis offers closer ties to the XR69: “CMR Racing in Trenton, Ontario was building XR69 chassis for Team USA and others who competed at the Island Classic at Phillip Island in Australia,” Darren tells us. “The chassis were highly competitive and setting lap records in their class, mere seconds off the pace of modern superbikes.”

CM Racing’s Byron Cox and Denis Curtis, who sadly passed away late last year, fabricated a pair of 4130 aircraft grade tubular chromoly steel frames, for the first two commissioned builds. And they supplied the swingarms and fuel tanks too.

Darren completed the chassis with Öhlins suspension at both ends, including a set of forks originally designed for a BMW S1000RR, with 10 mm additional length and stroke. The wheels are ultra light carbon fiber items from Dymag, wrapped in 17” Michelin Pilot Power CT2 tires. The brakes are Brembo calipers with twin 320 mm discs up front, plumbed with Spiegler lines.

For the bodywork, Darren designed a fairing and tail in the style of the XR69, then had the parts shaped out of carbon fiber. The fairing uses a pair of headlights from a Honda VFR400 NC35. Just behind it is a Koso dash, with clip-ons, race-style switches, Brembo controls and a Yoshimura throttle.

There’s a slim racing seat pad up top, with Harris Performance rear-sets lower down.

Darren’s designed a few livery options that potential clients can pick from, with inspiration from various classic Suzuki race bikes. The options even include a red and black tribute to the original XR69 paint scheme—but so far, everyone’s interest has fallen on this blue design. “It’s hard to deny that some inspiration didn’t come from Team Classic Suzuki’s rendition as well,” he admits.

Regular collaborator Sketch’s Ink laid down the livery. It’s all paint too, with not a single vinyl graphic in sight.

Darren’s first XR69 replica series build is flawless, and looks like it’d be nuts to ride too. This one’s off to New Zealand, and the second one, which is currently being assembled and “will be a killer 1,216 cc monster,” is destined for California.

Police charged Plumb issued 28 false checks throughout Ontario in recent weeks. [AL: This was Plumb’s second time in penitentiary. Here is a customer supplied photo of a live edge cherry end table that I built and delivered last year. This beautiful table was built for a wedding gift. The cherry tree this came from had to be cut down as it was causing extensive damage to the plumbing in it’s owners home. I was able to salvage the majority of the tree. I cut this particular piece diagonally from the crotch of the tree where the main trunk split into two branches. I then reinforced the piece with hand cut ash bow ties, inlaid between the two branch sections. I made the legs from round steel stock, and finished them with a hammered paint. Coronavirus concerns lead to the cancellation of construction-related gatherings

The coronavirus that is sweeping the globe, pushing governments, businesses, and schools to initiate social-distancing measures, is also impacting the construction industry which has seen the cancellation of several major events.

The implications of the virus on the overall economy and the construction sector in particular will likely be immense, as medical services face overwhelming challenges and the rest of the economy grinds to a halt as the virus spreads.

The Canadian Construction Association (CAA) announced it was cancelling its annual conference, originally scheduled for March 15-18 in San Diego, California. Organizers of the 2020 Canadian Mechanical & Plumbing Exposition (CMPX) have also decided to postpone the show originally planned for March 25-27 at the Toronto Conference Centre.  On a more local level, Merkley Supply Ltd. cancelled its annual MSL show in Ottawa.

The CCA Board of Directors held an emergency meeting to discuss the situation, and made the decision to cancel the conference.

“The vote was overwhelmingly in favour of cancelling the events, with the overriding objective to protect … delegates, staff and the association from risks associated with the coronavirus. This was not an easy decision and we are all disappointed that we will not be able to get together and celebrate the industry as usual this year,” wrote John Bockstael, Chair of the CCA, in a message sent to all subscribers of the CCA’s updates.

“As you can appreciate, we are working through the communications and logistics now. CCA activities including the Zoo tour and golf tournament will be cancelled by the CCA.”

He continued that registration will be cancelled and reimbursed. “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, disappointment and issues with your travel plans that this has caused.”

In an emailed message, Ralph Suppa, president and general manager of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating (CIPH) discussed how fast-moving developments have forced the postponement of the exposition.

“It’s amazing how fast the world moves; just 10 days ago we were confident that the 2020 CMPX Show would run as expected. Even earlier this week we were re-assured when the Ontario Government made a public announcement (March 10) that events should continue as planned in the (Ontario). Roll the clock ahead 48 hours and it’s a different world,” he said.

“Sports events have been cancelled, flights have been disrupted, schools closed, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, and the Canadian Government announced a comprehensive response package to combat and mitigate the impacts of the outbreak in Canada.”

He continued that even if the risks are low, prudence calls the postponement of the 2020 CMPX event.

“There are many details that remain to work out, so further announcements will be made in due course. For now, we wanted to get this message out to ensure all exhibitors are able to make appropriate plans, since the planned start of the event is only 12 days away.  We will communicate pertinent details as they become available. We request your patience and support as we work through these issues,” said Suppa.

Concerns over the virus has caused the cancellation of a number of large-audience events, including major sports league games. Both the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association have suspended games, and soccer matches in Europe are being played without fans in attendance.

As well, on March 12, the Ontario government announced that all publicly funded schools would remain closed for two weeks after spring break.

PVC Meets The Reef

Hey Farm Hands,

  Today we are going to talk about a new up and comer in the reef industry, his name is Ty Gibson, owner and operator of the company named REEF PVC. Ty lives in Lethbridge, Albert, Canada. Where he works as a Iron Core Welder and he is moving up the ranks into a Forman/management position.  After I herd that, I new this guy was a hard worker, as I am in the trades as well. I am a Electrical Commercial Forman for an electrical company in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and being in the trades gives you a great work ethic. Ty is an avid reefer and like ourselves he loves the hobby and wishes he could get more time to mess around with his tank, but like the rest of us work takes over sometimes and we get to spend less time to look after our tank. Ty had a beautiful aquarium built by the same company that build my 600 gallon Hulk reef tank by Concept Aquariums. Concept is a world renounce company that builds some of the top aquarium tanks in the world. There craftsmanship to detail and giving the customer what they want is amazing. Ty’s  tank dimensions for his main display is 60”w x 30”D x 20”H and the frag tank is 30”Wx 30”Dx 12H. It’s an awesome setup with its matching frag tank beside it. Talk about having everything you need to get fragging. It’s great to see young people with such ambition in the hobby trying to help fellow reefers get the products they need. When I interviewed Ty I asked him how he got into the hobby and what made him want to start his own business, REEF PVC he had this to say...

"Okay Farm Hands,     So it all started when I decided to set up one of my first aquariums. I bought the tank and sump used off Kijiji, got it home and started to piece together equipment bit by bit right away. Soon I was at the plumbing stage and I had already seen photos of sumps with colored piping online before so I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Immediately I ran into the problem of finding colored PVC in Canada. The only places I could find it were in the United States but I usually like to buy my supplies from Canadian based vendors. That’s what triggered the idea “why don’t I just bring colored PVC to Canada then?” Immediately I started working on my website and figuring out a way to get the colored PVC to us in Canada. Of course by starting Reef PVC, that became my main focus which took up most of my time and money which resulted in putting a halt to building my own personal aquarium. Over time Reef PVC has continued to grow bit by bit, mainly from word of mouth and social media. With the help of people like yourself, we are finally able to get our name out there to as many people as possible.
