'Either you believe in free speech for views you dislike - or you don't believe in it at all' - Message to Queen's University Belfast from academics after Northern Irish institution pledges its enthusiasm for free expression and conscience
Either you believe in freedom of speech for views you dislike, or you don't believe in freedom of speech.
That is the message to Queen's University Belfast from major international academic Peter Boghossian, after it issued a statement stressing its enthusiasm for freedom of thought and expression in the face of pro-Palestinian protests.
The statement means the university is now caught in a "contradiction" he said, given that it recently adopted a policy compelling everyone on campus to accept transgender identities.
Other academics who are voicing similar sentiments are Edward Skidelsky and Liam Kennedy.
Dr Sidelsky is a lecturer in philosophy at the University of Exeter, and director of the Committee for Academic Freedom, while Prof Kennedy is a history professor at Queen's.
This most recent episode of the Queen's free speech saga began on May 9, when the university issued a statement after Palestine activists temporarily occupied its main building to protest against its ties to Israel.
In response, the university said: "Queen’s University Belfast is committed to freedom of expression, the right to hold a range of views, and the promotion and protection of the right to protest. This applies to our students, academics, and professional staff, and indeed the wider public."
In December The News Letter revealed details of its new QUB trans code, which states that if somebody uses a trans or "non-binary" person's “incorrect pronouns” on two or more occasions (even by accident) it will fall under "bullying and harassment".
Tumblr media
[ Peter Boghossian ]
This applies “regardless of whether or not that person has transitioned legally or surgically”.
The code also bars what it calls "derogatory jokes", also on pain of disciplinary action.
The code applies to all staff, students, student applicants, job applicants, plus "all visitors and anyone providing services to, or those contracted to work at, the University including sub-contractors".
(This followed a battle with the Queen's press office, which initially refused to hand over the relevant documentation.)
Peter Boghossian (293,000 Twitter followers) was a philosophy professor in Portland, USA, before quitting, accusing it of "intolerance of divergent beliefs and opinions".
He was one of the architects of the "grievance studies" scandal which saw him and others submit made-up research papers on feminism and gender to academic journals, many of which were published despite being surreally absurd.
Contrasting Queen's trans policy with its support for "the right to hold a range of views", Prof Boghossian said: "It is a contradiction.
"People in general, and it seems that academics in particular, only support free speech when they approve of the content of that speech."
On the worldwide Palestinian campus protests more widely, he added: "For many academics and diversity-equity-and-inclusion bureaucrats ‘Kill the Jews’ and ‘We need a Final Solution’ is protected speech, but asking people ‘Where are you from?’ or saying ‘I don’t see color’ are microaggressions."
Prof Sidelsky likewise said there is "inconsistency" in Queen's approach.
"Like many institutions, QUB is all for freedom of expression for views it agrees with, not for views it disagrees with," he said.
"But if you really believe in freedom of expression, you believe in it across the board."
And professor Liam Kennedy said that whilst the university's trans policy does not seem to be "a problem", it is "rather pointless, if not actually silly of Queen’s University to insist on making this a requirement backed up by disciplinary threats".
He added: "There is a danger of mission creep here, and disciplinary threats if exercised vigorously could end up producing a chill factor in relation to academic freedom."
Queen's was invited to comment but didn't.

Just in case anyone thinks Peter is using a strawman:

Note that the QUB policy constitutes compelled speech. You're being forced to knowingly lie, or you'll be punished.

American Gentry
Much of America is governed by a class of wealthy gentry—not billionaires but not middle class either. Their wealth is in the millions and tens of millions.
Patrick Wyman:
This kind of elite’s wealth derives not from their salary - this is what separates them from even extremely prosperous members of the professional-managerial class, like doctors and lawyers - but from their ownership of assets. Those assets vary depending on where in the country we’re talking about; they could be a bunch of McDonald’s franchises in Jackson, Mississippi, a beef-processing plant in Lubbock, Texas, a construction company in Billings, Montana, commercial properties in Portland, Maine, or a car dealership in western North Carolina. Even the less prosperous parts of the United States generate enough surplus to produce a class of wealthy people. Depending on the political culture and institutions of a locality or region, this elite class might wield more or less political power. In some places, they have an effective stranglehold over what gets done; in others, they’re important but not all-powerful.
Wherever they live, their wealth and connections make them influential forces within local society. In the aggregate, through their political donations and positions within their localities and regions, they wield a great deal of political influence. They’re the local gentry of the United States.
Gentry classes have been common throughout history: The Roman Empire, Han China, medieval France, and the planters of the antebellum South.
By definition, they’re local elites.
In the early Roman Empire, for example, local civic elites were essential to the functioning of the state. They collected taxes in their home cities, administered justice, and competed with each other for local political offices and seats on the city councils. Their competition was a driving force behind the provision of benefits to the common folk in the form of festivals, games, public buildings, and more basic support, a practice called civic euergetism.
These local elites of the Roman world served as the linkage between the central administrative apparatus of the earlier emperors like Augustus or Hadrian and the archipelago of cities that made up the Roman Empire. This was how the Roman Empire could function with a central administration of only a few hundred scribes, clerks, and functionaries gathered around the emperor: The central state essentially outsourced the day-to-day running of the empire to the city councillors of Marseilles, Tarragona, Antioch, Athens, Carthage, and a hundred other cities scattered from Britain to Arabia.
When we talk about inequality, we skew our perspective by looking at the most visible manifestations: penthouses in New York, mansions in Beverly Hills, the excesses of hedge fund billionaires or a misbehaving celebrity. But that’s not who most of the United States’ wealthy elite really are. They own $2 million houses on golf courses outside Orlando and a condo in the Bahamas, not an architecturally designed oceanfront villa in Miami. It’s not that those billionaires and excesses don’t exist; it’s that they’re not nearly as common as a less exalted kind of wealth that’s no less structurally formative to our economy and society.
There are an enormous number of organizations and institutions dedicated to advancing the interests of this gentry class: Chambers of Commerce, exclusive country clubs and housing developments, the American Society of Concrete Contractors, and fruit-growers’ associations, just to name a small cross-section. Through these organizations and their intimate ties to local and state politics, the gentry class can and usually does wield significant power to shape society to their liking.
It’s easy to focus on the massive political spending of a Sheldon Adelson or Michael Bloomberg; it’s harder, but no less important, to imagine what kind of deals about water rights or local zoning ordinances are being struck across the country on the eighth green of the local country club.
This class is largely hereditary.
Managers run their companies, lawyers look over their contracts, accountants manage their finances, but they’re the owners, whether or not they’ve done a single thing of their own volition to accumulate those assets.
Equating wealth, especially generational wealth, with virtue and ability is a deeply American pathology. This country loves to believe that people get what they deserve, despite the abundant evidence to the contrary. Nowhere is this more obviously untrue than with our gentry class. They stand at the apex of the social order throughout huge swathes of the country, and shape our economic and political world thanks to their resources and comparatively large numbers, yet they’re practically invisible in our popular understanding of these things.
Power resides in group photos of half-soused overweight men in ill-fitting polo shirts, in gated communities and local philanthropic boards. You’ll rarely, if ever, see these things on CNN or in the New York Times, but they’re no less essential to understanding how and why our society works the way it does.

Mogil-Kahn Construction Company 1957 (Photo taken by Tim Aarons in March 2023 on Collins St. between Lankersheim and Tujunga).
Kahn was Edwin “Ed” Walter Kahn, born on June 3, 1922 in Pittsburg to “Theodore and Helen H. (Meyers),” and a “construction company executive, engineer” (Who’s who in the West: A Biographical Dictionary of Noteworthy Men and Women of the Pacific Coast and the Western States, A.N. Marquis Company, 1989). In 1935, he lived with is family in Portland, Oregon. He was still with his family in Portland in 1940 (per the 1940 U.S. Federal Census). However, he attended Fairfax Senior High School in Los Angeles, CA. Before WWII, he also attended UCLA, where he played soccer and baseball. In WWII, he was a lieutenant pilot in the USA Air Force -  a B-24 bomber pilot in the 89th and as a flight instructor. He was later a civil engineer and, if I understand the abbreviations correctly, he had gotten a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of California in 1948 (assuming Berkeley).
According to his obituary, he was a “Registered Professional Engineer and a licensed General Contractor.”
He married Arleen Barbara Rudolph on December 23, 1951, and they had two children - Gregory Michael and Julia Fran. He was the chief structural designer for General Engineering Service Company in Los Angeles in 1948 and then a partner in Pollak-Kahn & Associates, engineers, also in Los Angeles in 1949. and Mogil-Kahn Construction Company (World Who’s who in Commerce and Industry, Volume 10, Marquis-Who’s Who., 1957). He died February 5, 2016 and is buried in the Hollywood Hills Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Pollak-Kahn was located at 1106 S. La Cienega Boulevard, now LB4LB Boxing Gym (Glaziers Journal - Volume 35, pg. 60, 1956). One project they had was the design and engineering of “a fully integrated community for light industry” on a 100-acre “tract of industrial buildings and plant sites” (Industrial Development, Volumes 3-4, Conway Publications, 1956).
According to the realty company, Crisby Doe Associates, “it is clear that Pollack & Kahn fully mastered the now classic post & beam glass house style pioneered by the U.S.C. School of Architecture just after war. Their work seems most closely aligned with that of Richard Dorman’s designs of the period. The living spaces are lifted, and set above the carport to allow maximum light and views from the close-in hillside setting.”
Some more info from his obituary: “He retired after 40 years as a real estate developer and as President of Kahn Construction Co., Contractors and Engineers. He had a commercial pilot's license and served as a docent at the original Museum of Flying in Santa Monica. Ed was a member of the Masons, Scottish Rites, Shriners, Commemorative Air Force, Air Force Association, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Ed is survived by his wife and best friend, Mariko, sons Greg and Winston, daughter Julie, stepdaughters Pam (Harry) Kraushaar and Andrea (Jeffrey) Lustgarten, stepson Mitchell Barnow (Dale Leininger) and step grandchildren, Shelby Powell (Brian), Kimberley Kraushaar, Brandon and Rachel Lustgarten.” (No mention of Arleen?) They also had two pets named Maya and Corey.
I have no idea who Mogil is. Really strange how I could find out so easily who Kahn was but not Mogil. Mogil may be Norbert V Mogil, who was located at 6517 W Olympic Blvd according to the Los Angeles Street Address Directory, 1956, May (Los Angeles Public Library).

How Much Does a New Roof Cost?
Tumblr media
If you’re wondering how much a new roof will cost for your home, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ll discuss the factors that determine the cost of a new roof, including the materials and labor costs. Then, we’ll look at some of the top types of roofs and how much they cost. We’ll also look at what factors to consider when determining the cost of a new roof for a single-story home.
Factors that affect the cost of a new roof
How much will it cost you to get a new roof? While there are some factors that will affect the cost, the price of a new roof is largely dependent on your location. Certain parts of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest and Florida, are notoriously expensive when it comes to roofing, and you may need to budget a little more money for this aspect of your home. Here are the factors that will affect the price of a new roof.
- The type of roof. Certain roofs are more difficult to cover, which can raise the cost. For example, a steep roof requires more materials and equipment for installation, while a flat roof is easier to walk across. Also, steep roofs require scaffolding or additional safety equipment, which can increase the price of a new roof. And because every roof is different, there are many other factors that affect the price, including the structure of the roof.
Labor costs
If you’re wondering how much does a new roof cost, consider the labor costs involved. You’ll pay between $250 and $1,800 for a single shingle roof. More expensive materials, such as copper or slate, will add to the total cost. The cost will also depend on the size of the roof and the type of material. A single shingle roof that covers approximately 32 square feet is around $300 to $450.
The amount of labor will vary by region and town. In areas with higher labor costs, roofers will charge more per hour. If you’re looking for a good bargain, contact several roofers and negotiate a price that meets your needs. The best contractor will match your price with others in the area. Generally, labor costs make up 60% of the total cost. A contractor will set a higher price if he’s confident in his skills and experience.
Materials
Materials cost of a new roof is the highest factor in the overall project cost. Roofing materials, such as asphalt, are the most commonly used in the United States, but many other options are available as well. While asphalt roofing is the cheapest choice, other options include concrete shingles, clay shingles, slate tiles, and wood shingles. For an average cost of $4,000-$10,000 per square foot, shingles are the most popular option for new roofs.
The materials cost of a new roof varies greatly, but a basic asphalt shingle roof costs about $360 to $550 per square foot. For the most expensive roof materials, concrete, and clay tiles are around $800 per square foot. The cost of materials varies widely, and it’s important to remember that local building codes may have a huge impact on the overall price. The average cost of materials to reroof a house is anywhere from $4,707 to $15,690.
Single-story home
The cost to replace the roof on a single-story home can vary depending on several factors. Depending on the state and city, you can expect to pay between $6,500 and $11,649 for a typical roof replacement. Some of the highest-cost areas are the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle. In addition to these cities, larger metropolitan areas like Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia have higher costs than the national average.
The average US home is about 2,000 square feet. An older single-story home is likely smaller than a two-story house. The type of shingles and underlayment used will also determine the cost. Other factors that may affect the cost of a new roof include the region in which you live and the type of company that installs the roof. A quality roof should last for at least twenty years, and a good job will increase the value of your home.
Size of home
The cost of a new roof varies greatly depending on the square footage of your home. Materials and labor for a 1,000-square-foot roof cost between $4,500 and $5,500. Those with more square-feet can expect to pay anywhere from $8,700 to $12,000 for a new roof. Here are some tips for getting a great price on a new roof.

Why Clean Gutter Before Winter Sets In (5 Key Reasons)
Tumblr media
As you prepare your house or metal building for winter, ensure all tasks are complete: the furnace works, the roof looks great, and the attic and basement are dry. Don’t forget to clean the gutter before winter. Homeowners in Portland, Oregon, often overlook this crucial step, so consider a professional gutter cleaning service to avoid unpleasant consequences.
Here are five important reasons to put gutter cleaning on your list of tasks to prepare your home for winter:
1. You Will Not Have to Deal with Sagging Gutters
Debris clogging the gutters means that water gets trapped instead of being discharged on land. When temperatures reach freezing levels, all the water in the gutters will freeze, of course. Now, when water freezes, its volume increases. Together with the debris, this will lead to the gutters tearing off your house and sagging.
In several cases, our gutter cleaning specialists had to replace the entire gutter system due to this issue. You can avoid a significant expense by making sure your gutters are clean before the first snow.
2. You Won’t Have to Deal with Dangerous Ice Dams
What happens to excess water on the roof during the winter? It overflows and freezes, creating an ice dam along all the sides of the roof. The ice shards, which are sharp and heavy, can cause serious injury if they fall on you or one of your family members.
After taking care of gutter cleaning before winter, you will only have a harmless layer of snow on the roof, making your home picture-perfect for Instagram, rather than a hazard waiting to happen.
3. You Will Avoid Damage to the Roof
When gutters are clogged, water will pool on the roof. This water can get into very tiny cracks in the roof before the freezing temperatures set in. As water freezes, the cracks will get bigger.
By the end of the winter, you may need roof repair, mold removal, and other professional services to fix various damages.
4. You Will Avoid Expensive Gutter Repairs in the Future
Contractors specializing in gutter cleaning will do more than just remove debris. We perform a general inspection of the entire gutter system, checking all its elements.
We can identify the smallest cracks and the first signs of rust and fix them before the problem becomes more serious. A little now will go a long way in the future, saving you from a serious headache and a bunch of unnecessary expenses.
You Can Prevent the Growth of Mold and Mildew
Dead leaves and other debris combined with water are the perfect breeding ground for fungi, mold, and mildew. These contaminants can easily get into your house and pose serious health risks for you and your family.
You can avoid all these and many other negative scenarios with a simple decision – hire a specialist for gutter cleaning before winter!

43 Grade Cement Brands: A Comprehensive Guide to OPC 43 Grade Cement
Tumblr media
Introduction
Cement is an essential component in construction, playing a vital role in providing strength and durability to various structures. As the construction industry continues to evolve, different varieties of cement have emerged to cater to specific requirements. One such variety is 43 grade cement, often referred to as OPC 43 grade cement. In this article, we will explore the features, benefits, and applications of OPC 43 grade cement, along with a comparison of this grade with other types of cement.
Understanding OPC Cement
OPC cement overview:
Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is the most commonly used type of cement worldwide. It is known for its versatility, strength, and reliability. OPC is manufactured by grinding clinker, gypsum, and other materials to a fine powder. The resulting powder, when mixed with water, forms a paste that hardens over time, turning into a solid mass known as concrete. OPC is available in various grades, with 43 grade being one of the most widely used.
OPC cement manufacturing process:
The manufacturing process of OPC cement involves the heating of limestone and other materials at high temperatures to form a clinker. This clinker is then finely ground to produce the cement powder. The grinding process affects the fineness and quality of the cement.
Key properties and uses of OPC 43 grade cement:
OPC 43 grade cement is known for its compressive strength, making it suitable for medium to high-strength applications. It offers an ideal balance between cost-effectiveness and performance. OPC 43 grade cement finds application in general construction, residential buildings, and small-scale infrastructure projects.
Comparing OPC 43 Grade Cement with Other Grades
Advantages of OPC 43 grade cement:
OPC 43 grade cement offers several advantages. It provides good workability, making it easier to mix, place, and compact. It also exhibits excellent durability and resistance to environmental factors such as moisture, chemicals, and abrasion. OPC 43 grade cement is cost-effective and offers reliable strength, making it a preferred choice for many construction projects.
Differences between OPC 43 grade cement and other grades:
When comparing OPC 43 grade cement with other grades such as 53 grade or 33 grade, certain differences arise. OPC 43 grade cement falls in the middle of the strength spectrum, with 53 grade cement being stronger and 33 grade cement being weaker. This difference in strength affects the suitability of each grade for various applications.
Specific applications of OPC 43 grade cement:
OPC 43 grade cement is widely used in the construction of residential buildings, commercial complexes, and infrastructure projects where medium strength requirements are demanded. It is commonly used for plastering, brickwork, flooring, and non-structural concrete works.
Popular OPC 43 Grade Cement Brands
Brand A:
Brand A is known for its commitment to quality and reliability. Their OPC 43 grade cement is widely trusted by builders and contractors for its consistent performance and excellent workability. With a focus on customer satisfaction, Brand A has become a popular choice in the construction industry.
Brand B:
Brand B has established itself as a prominent player in the cement market. Their OPC 43 grade cement stands out due to its superior strength and durability. Builders and architects appreciate the consistent quality and value for money offered by Brand B.
Brand C:
Brand C has gained a strong foothold in the cement industry by delivering top-notch products. Their OPC 43 grade cement is known for its exceptional finish and ease of use. With a commitment to innovation, Brand C continues to be a trusted name in the market.
Factors to Consider When Choosing OPC 43 Grade Cement
Quality standards and certifications:
When selecting OPC 43 grade cement, it is crucial to check if the product meets relevant quality standards and possesses certifications from regulatory bodies. Look for certifications such as ISI mark or BIS accreditation to ensure the cement's quality.
Reputation and customer feedback:
Considering the reputation and customer feedback of the cement brand can provide valuable insights into its performance and reliability. Research reviews and testimonials to gauge the satisfaction level of previous customers.
Price and availability:
Comparing the price of OPC 43 grade cement across different brands can help find the most cost-effective option. Additionally, consider the availability of the cement brand in your region to ensure a steady supply for your construction needs.
Tips for Using and Storing OPC 43 Grade Cement
Correct handling and storage techniques:
To maximize the effectiveness of OPC 43 grade cement, it is essential to handle and store it properly. Store cement bags in a cool, dry location, and protect them from moisture. Avoid storing cement for prolonged periods as it can degrade over time.
Precautions to ensure proper usage:
When using OPC 43 grade cement, follow the recommended guidelines for mixing ratios, curing processes, and safety precautions. Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions to achieve optimal results and maintain structural integrity.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ 1: Can OPC 43 grade cement be used for all construction projects? Yes, OPC 43 grade cement can be used for a wide range of construction projects, particularly those requiring medium strength.
FAQ 2: What is the shelf life of OPC 43 grade cement? The shelf life of OPC 43 grade cement is approximately six months from the date of manufacturing when stored in proper conditions.
FAQ 3: Is OPC 43 grade cement suitable for high-strength applications? While OPC 43 grade cement offers good strength, it may not be ideal for high-strength applications that demand superior compressive strength. In such cases, a higher-grade cement, like OPC 53 grade, might be more appropriate.
FAQ 4: Are there any specific curing requirements for OPC 43 grade cement? OPC 43 grade cement requires standard curing practices, including adequate moisture supply, protection against drying, and following a curing period of typically 7 to 14 days.
FAQ 5: Can OPC 43 grade cement be mixed with other grades of cement? It is generally recommended to avoid mixing different grades of cement, as it may compromise the strength and performance of the concrete. It is best to use OPC 43 grade cement in isolation or combine it with cement of the same grade for consistent results.
In conclusion, OPC 43 grade cement offers an excellent balance between strength, durability, and affordability, making it a popular choice for construction projects. Selecting the right brand and adhering to proper usage and storage techniques are essential to ensure optimum results. By understanding the features, benefits, and applications of OPC 43 grade cement, builders and contractors can make informed decisions, ultimately leading to robust and long-lasting structures.

How To Choose A Reputable General Contractor
Tumblr media
When searching for a general contractor, you must consider several crucial factors. Naturally, you'll want to hire the most qualified contractor for the task, and you'll want to negotiate a fair price for high-quality work. Unfortunately, hiring a good contractor at a reasonable price involves a lot of difficulties. Most of the time, you will either choose a general contractor who will overcharge you for excellent work or a subpar contractor who will quote you a low price. However, there is a happy medium between these two extremes, and it is doable to get a respectable contractor that will complete decent work for you.
Tip: The general contractors in Portland Oregon are prepared to surpass expectations on every job thanks to their extensive competence in large and small projects and their experience working with custom home builders and commercial developers.
Finding a reputable general contractor for a building requires the following critical steps:
Prepare a limited list of prospective general contractors.
It's similar to finding other competent employees to discover a reputable contractor. Asking for suggestions from individuals you know is a good place to start. Your acquaintance will probably be pleased to recommend a particular general contractor to you if he has performed well for someone you know.
