So that Superman And Lois trailer, huh? A new one got dropped finally doing the big blue boy some cinematic justice.

I’m not gonna pretend this means everything’s awesome - I can only hope the red flags raised by Nadria Tucker are either panic-corrected or at least aren’t outright devastating - but boy was it cathartic scrolling through Twitter today seeing people going “Wait, the new Superman show is gonna rule actually?! If ONLY someone had told us!”

It looks like real TV! Not a version of Castle where sometimes there’s lightning and a wind gun when the guy runs! Not that what the other CW shows are doing doesn’t work for what it is - i.e. soap operas mixed with Power Rangers-ey corny earnest superheroics - but there was more than one shot in here with either the lighting or the effects or framing or all of the above that made me think “oh my god it’s him, my favorite Superman, but in something where it’s about him, and it looks like he’s in the higher-budget show I wished he could’ve been in rather than the expected CW standard fare with slightly better effects than usual, it’s a miracle”. It’s like the reverse of seeing Routh on a soundstage through a totally journeyman camera in Crisis; it was never actually confirmed this is getting HBO Max money, but thank god one way or another WB realized they couldn’t air a network primetime Superman TV show noticeably worse-looking than Stargirl. They even finally put some good Hoechlin acting on display with the way his voice wobbles a bit when he asks if he’s a bad father. And the Man Of Steel aesthetic fits with my “this is framing itself as a sequel to the general pop cultural impression of Superman” theory between that, the Smallville connections, and the evocation of Lois & Clark. Can’t wait to see what this looks like whenever it eventually gets to the weird stuff that comes with the franchise, and between this and my favorable take on the pilot script I’m fully on my “this is going to be the best mass-media adaptation of the character to date” high horse.

Can't link from phone but there's an article at Deadline primetime pilot panic section about this. Basic gist is the word is they still intend to produce the pilots but if the wait goes beyond a few weeks, they'll have to forego them and stick with or give straight to series orders and renew shows they already have. Timing is not on their side. Had this happened last month, they would've had more time to wait it out but as it stands now, not as much. Could go either way. Fingers crossed.

We will see.
