TRIPITAKA - the lost spiritual sequel to Cosmology of Kyoto was found

This post is a compilation of a series of tweets I have composed over a period of weeks during this summer.

For years, it was uncertain whether TRIPITAKA 玄奘三蔵求法の旅, by Soft Edge, had in fact ever been published. I remind the more absent-minded readers that this is the studio responsible for the mythical CD-ROM Cosmology of Kyoto, originally released in Japan in 1993, later published in the United States by Yano Electric in 1995. Knowledge of this their second and final production comes solely from the online CVs of producers Hiroshi Ōnishi and Mori Kōichi. No other information could be found online, and no actual copy of the game was known to exist.

Earlier this year, this disc surfaced at Yahoo Auctions. It sold for nearly $300 after 24 bids.

As suggested by its tile, which translates to Xuanzang Sanzo's Dharma-Seeking Journey, it was always assumed that the game illustrated episodes of the life of the celebrated Chinese Buddhist monk, particularly his 7th century pilgrimage to India. The captures printed on the back not only show a character highly reminiscent of the ancient scholar, they depict a variety of scenes taking place in China and India.

According to the severely incomplete archived version of PD Inc's website, the Japanese publisher responsible for this digipack, it was available for sale at museums hosting the 1999 Silk Road Journey To The West exhibition, which suitably matches the date printed on the back cover. However, this date presents yet another open question, as the Ōnishi-San and Kōichi-San bios both list it as a 1995 production.

The technical specifications may provide an enlightening clue, as they refer to Windows 95, 640x480px resolution and an 8-Bit color mode. This indicates that TRIPITAKA was indeed developed sometime between 1993 and 1995, although it was never published in the CD-ROM game circuit, certainly not in the immediate years after its development was completed. Combined with the data retrieved from the publisher's website, the edition shown here appears to have been produced solely for the occasion, as a means to diversify the museum shop catalog for this major exhibit, given the shared theme.

It would have been nearly impossible, had the program been in fact published in 1995, for a single copy to not have been spotted or mentioned online by the many Japanese collectors who have attempted to locate it for decades, unsuccessfully. On the other hand, a CD-ROM that was sold at a museum exhibit is likely to be purchased by visitors who were entirely unaware of the item's relevance as an elusive multimedia gem.

If a tangent is permitted here, both productions are inextricably linked with the museum space, and as far as I can speculate, Cosmology of Kyoto was, itself, also published with the intention of being made available in gallery stores in addition to computer game retailers. I say this because this was a production made possible by collaborative efforts including a variety of Japanese museums, to the extent these are referenced by name in the game's credits.

Considering the price at which the item was sold at auction, I was fairly certain that it was purchased by one such video game collector who knew exactly what they were bidding for. Later in July, I was able to locate the buyer and establish contact. Initially, the buyer was only able to produce this screenshot of the disc program launcher. The title reads "Cosmology of Asia", validating the claims that Soft Edge was in effect planning for series of edutainment software prior to its demise in the mid-90s.

In my second contact with the owner, I asked if he was available to produce a disc image and share it online for purposes of software preservation. The owner politely declined, stating that this was not something he was willing to do but offered to record the following gameplay video instead.

At a glance, the art style of Tripitaka is unsurprisingly similar to that of Cosmology. Most of its episodes occur during the day, whereas the latter was mostly played under the dark cover of night. The first scene depicts a dying Xuanzang reminiscing on his journeys in the company of a young chronicler. Structurally, both games are also nearly indistinguishable from one another, producing ample historical information for context, including detailed maps and chronologies.

TRIPITAKA was considered to be lost media for decades. As such, the importance of this footage could hardly be overstated. I would not hesitate to compare this development to the unearthing of Osamu Sato's Chu-Teng, the Eastern Mind sequel that was also deemed lost for many years, miraculously found during the time this blog was inactive.

I am delighted to have played a minor role in the unraveling of this thirty year old mystery, and can hardly contain my enthusiasm, as I now find myself equipped with sufficient information to produce a full post concerning a game about which I could not have written more than a sentence, just last year.

Grandma's Calendar Company

As I was recently reminded, back in the 1990s, I worked a few years at Rivertown Trading Company, the official catalog company for Minnesota Public Radio and Minnesota Public Television. (Plus a couple of other catalogs.) MPR was riding high back then as they were the home of the nationally popular A Prairie Home Companion show. We sold a lot of merchandise for that and other cool stuff.

I worked inbound phone sales and sometimes customer service. (Thankfully, the company did not do outbound calls.) One of the job functions was "upselling." We'd have three or four items from each catalog on "special" each week, and would mention this to callers to see if they wanted to add one to their order. It wasn't so bad, purely optional for the customer, and if you managed to upsell an item, you got a few cents on the dollar added to your paycheck.

As was customary in the business, the Winter catalogs were printed in June and went out in early July so that people could start their Christmas shopping well in advance. This particular year, we had a new product from Grandma's Calendar Company.

The idea was that you would order a packet from Rivertown, fill out all your important birthdays and anniversaries, include favorite photographs, and mail it off to the calendar company to create customized calendars for your family. This is before everyone and their little sister had the software and hardware to do it at home, so was a very cool idea. So cool, that management decided to make it the upsell item of the season, to be pushed on every call that would let you.

This item sold very well, only encouraging management to push it more. But in late July, I got a scattering of concerned callers. The calendars they'd ordered in early July hadn't arrived yet. I referred them to GCC's customer service line and informed management. Management was like "thanks for telling us, but this is clearly an anomaly due to startup times."

By late August, I was getting three or four calls a week on this subject. I suggested to management that perhaps we should take the calendars off our specials, as it seemed likely there were supply chain issues somewhere. I was assured everything was fine, all the calendars would arrive by Christmas, and to keep upselling them.

While I was obligated to follow the general upsell script, I began deliberately emphasizing the other specials and downplaying the custom calendars. I did not sell any myself after this point. More people were referred to GCC's customer service line.

By late September, I was up to a call a day minimum on this issue, and usually more. Management insisted we continue to upsell the calendars, everything was going to be okay.

By mid-October, the trickle of complaints had turned into a flood, and we got callbacks saying that GCC's customer service line was disconnected. We started referring callers to GCC's regular phone number. Management still refused to let us stop upselling the calendars, and a rumor got started that one of our executives was in an improper relationship with someone at Grandma's Calendar Company. I got a particularly heartbreaking call from a grandparent who had included all the pictures they had of their infant grandchildren--who'd now died in an accident.

Finally in November, we were told to stop selling the calendars as the owners of GCC had fled the country in the middle of the night. Rivertown and a couple of other catalog companies got an injunction so they could go down to Texas and get all the photographs back for our customers.

Turned out that GCC had gotten more orders in just July than they could have processed by the end of the year, and at first they were stalling in hopes of getting the production capacity they needed, but when that didn't work, they just kept lying until they had enough money to enjoy an overseas trip.

Rivertown took a bath on the product, but I felt pretty good about my part as I'd spotted the problem early on, alerted the folks who should have investigated/fixed the problem, and didn't trick the customers into buying the vaporware calendars.

i'm mostly concerned about binding (especially on glbs) and what scanner specifications to look at, but any other advice or resources would be appreciated too!

So, I'm not actually an archivist, I'm a web developer by trade. I own a relatively inexpensive flatbed printer/scanner, mostly because it was what I could go out to a physical store and buy for relatively cheap when I started out scanning old magazines and catalogs.

For anything that is staple bound, like a magazine, and can be put flat on a table while open, scanning is relatively easy. You just need a flatbed scanner that is bigger than the pages, and a book to put on top of the lid to keep it flat (don't use too heavy of a book or you will damage the scanner 1-2 magazines is usually good. Also, don't forget they are there, open the lid and fling them across the room). Line up a corner of the page on the corner of the scanner and you should be golden. Scan in photo mode if your scanner software has options. Ideally, for things like the GLB, you would either want a copy you can destroy (which I kind of think is what some of the 'latest magazines' scanning farms were doing in the 2010s) and to carefully unbind the whole thing and scan the pages flat (which I have no personal interest in doing because destroying books pains me and I'm not trying to digitize "clean" digital copies for any professional reason). OR, my understanding is you want something with a V-shaped cradle of some type that is specialized for scanning books, either as an actual scanner or a camera setup with software. The problem is last time I looked those were like 10K and up if you get a piece of specialized equipment.

I've vaguely dabbled with the idea of doing a very hacky version of a DIY build with boxes cut down to the right angle and some panes of glass and my DSLR for my pink house catalogs because they are too big but I never really got it fully figured out. I will admit, I haven't tried super hard. I kept getting reflections, and I had to worry about the glass scratching the pages, and I didn't feel like getting a proper light.... I know I should really try again, and try a little harder, but it's a lot and I have a lot of other stuff I need to do so it just keeps getting kicked down the road.

That said, if you want to get into trying a DIY build, there is a whole community of people who were doing that in the 2010s that have posted good info on types of glass and way more detailed suggestions than I can make here: https://diybookscanner.org/forum/index.php This box scanner is essentially what I was trying to set up and it theoretically should work, I'm pretty sure my whole issue is that I was trying to do it all quickly at like midnight one day and did not have the right lighting and didn't try too hard to fix that. And then I needed to take it apart because I needed the table back...

But yeah, if you don't want to invest thousands or destroy them, I would say try a cardboard box scanner for things like the GLB, see if you can get it to work for you?

And then for things that can go flat, a combo scanner/printer that is good enough for photographs will be more than good enough for the print resolution of most magazines and the scanner/printer combos are way cheaper than dedicated scanners because they think you are going to become an ink customer and buy printer ink, so they make it cheaper. But the joke is on them. My combo scanner printer has never had ink in it before. (Note: do read reviews and make sure it's not stupid enough to require it's ink to be full to scan. I wouldn't put it past some companies to add that to their software). If you are really passionate about this, there are a lot of people who are way more dedicated to archival book scanning who have developed all sorts of DIY solutions for speeding up the process, automating parts of it, etc, and searching for terms like DIY book scanner should get you in the right place on the internet.

JRA stands for Japan Racing Association just in case you couldn't work that out and if you still aren't too sure what that is then it's basically the Japanese horse racing group. So, anyway what we have here is pretty much a fancy paperweight these days. This disc was originally used to allow you to bet on any horse race in Japan from the comfort of your own home via the Dreamcast. It was quite a simple system really. You first sign up to receive your login and password, then enter your payment details then place your bets. There's more on the disc than just a betting service mind you such as a guide to betting, information on horses that take part in the JRA races including Video footage of them in action and various stats.

Now the strange thing about this disc is that it doesn't say who made it however it does have Sega's logo on the front, but the catalog number isn't one of Sega's since theirs always starts with HDR, not the letter T. The spines also don't carry the Dreamcast logo which is very odd. It probably is made by Sega though, to be honest. Still, it's very cheaply made. The images used for the title screen and a few others look awful plus EVERY sound effect used within this disc are all straight from the Dreamcast bios screen!

Makes you wonder why this gets a color-printed disc, yet big-release titles don't. What's strange is that the music for the title screen is composed by Hideki Naganuma who also did the music for Jet Set Radio and Sonic Rush.

Back to the point

The list is far from exhaustive or finished, as life is so much more than meets the eye. But this should be a good start to remind myself what I am working towards, a full revamp of the last ~120 years of history with much attention and care put into making it as satisfying to me as possible, despite the very probable scenario where people take the ideas and incorporate only some of such "modules" in their own workflows. Which is fine but not taking the whole package (and only specific modules) is eventually gonna be a major learning experience for me considering the reason I revamp it all beyond control freak stuff is literally to provide less exclusive / less invasive tools that anyone can learn and customize despite being very... idiosyncratic yk.

To an average gamer, the fact that most classic games are no longer for sale might not be a practical concern. Piracy groups have gone to great lengths to ensure that entire platform catalogs have been ripped and preserved, with only a few unemulated exceptions. Apart from that, many games are available relatively cheaply on the secondhand market (if you have working hardware) or through institutional archives like Standford University's Cabrinety Collection. VGHFFor researchers, though, these solutions are imperfect. A professor assigning students a game to study, for instance, might find their university department is uncomfortable leaning on the "fair use" legal argument that would be needed to distribute a pirated copy. For these kinds of reasons, Salvador acknowledges piracy in the study as "often a last resort and necessity for proper study." And beyond academia, piracy isn't necessarily a mainstream-ready access solution. "Those of us already 'in the know' are set for life. My ROMs are never going away," VGHF founder and Executive Director Frank Cifaldi tweeted. "But I love video game history and I want it to be for everyone, not just the software-literate nerds. I want to see old games inspiring the weird artists of the future."

Also "scanning books" is what people see but that means:

Running (sometimes designing!) the book scanning system, the library website, and the interlibrary loan system + maintaining those machines that run the scanning/software

Writing up the summaries of books on the website

Designing displays and organizing books by subject and alphabetical author order

Researching and selecting books to be added to the catalog before they have even been released to the public, picking with summer reading programs and school projects in advance (as well as elections, the pandemic non-fiction books and the hobby books that were more in demand during the pandemic), and predicting how many copies of the books you need to buy for each book

Weeding (taking out books not frequently read)

Printing labels, labeling, and putting protective dust jackets on books

Grant writing to get funding for the library and even campaigning to the public to get them to endorse more library funding in local elections

Learning about human psychology to help with website design, building layout, and other facets of library work

Maintaining the use-in-library only books, which can include older and decaying books which entails some idea of book restoration and preservation to prevent damage and educate the public before they handle these books on proper handling technique

Knowing how to interact with students of every grade level and historians- including citations, source formatting, primary source research, essay writing, master's degree research, website use instructions, teaching people how to evaluate sources, etc

Having what's basically a computer science degree but for library stuff specifically (so extra stuff computer science students never learn because they'll never have access to those systems). People recommend a computer science minor to folks considering library science as a career because it can give you an edge over other students while doing your master's.

A strong grasp of your department's subject(s) so you can answer questions and help them find tailor made guides for relevant works, and if you're working at a small local town library that means "literally everything in the library"

The ability to provide good material recommendations for everything from "I want to bring a book with me to the beach" to "I need a paper on how long mice can breathe underwater" and where to find town hall, how to use a post box, how to deliver mail, etc

Managing resources that go way beyond books, like patron computers, printers, telephones, wifi services, library of things, audiobooks, CDs, videogames, audio equipment rentals, and so much more

I think these weren't included because they're the basic skills advertised in any library science degrees- they might have assumed people read the openly available class requirements for these degrees (which is such a library science assumption btw lmao). Library science degrees are in fact so advanced that you need to already have your bachelor's (or most of it) before you take any master's level library science course. There were no undergraduate library science degrees or classes last I knew in 2020.

So, re: "what do librarians do?" It's everything. They're the personification of knowledge gathering itself.
