Răchițele. Romania. 2017 The upper Henț valley [pronounced Hents] hosts the last permanent households in the south of Răchițele, most of them concentrated along the main road which follows the river.

The first thing Matei wanted to show me when we arrived at his newly acquired place in Răchițele was the view. To get to his house, we had to leave the car down in the main road. We crossed an improvised bridge made out of large logs that have been haphazardly put together. Then after a 10 minute walk on a small road that soon turned into a grassy trail we reached a long wooden fence enforced by quite tall trees.

We enter by a fragile broken gate that will soon need replacing and there it is. In the midst of many small fruit trees was a wooden house shaded by some large cherry trees. Beyond the house, the slope continues it’s way until to another fence. Beyond this limit it falls flat on a “promontory” - a flat grassy clearing abruptly ended on the other side by a ravine.

This is the 360 degree venue. Here you must leave a coin in the binocular to get a better view. “This is the space for spending both mornings and evenings,” says Matei. “When I first came here together with Raluca, we hoped we would one day find a place like this. We never thought it would be this actual place. On one side, the sun rises from behind Botii hill and on the other side it sets behind the Prislop pass.” We take a rest down on the grass and look at the other lands on the south face of Rășinari hill as the last light fades behind the Vlădeasa mountain range.

I find it really impressive to be here. It reminds me of my camping days when I would prospect the best place to pitch my tent or to bivouac so I could get a good view at all times. I especially love the blend of village with wild forest buffered by unkempt lands. I understand why Matei was so happy to be here.

Heaven`s Gate by negreavdoru // Prislop Pass is a mountain pass in northern Romania, connecting the historical regions of Maramureş and Bukovina over the Rodna Mountains, in the Eastern Carpathians. The Prislop Pass is situated at an elevation of 1,416 meters. The nearest city is Borșa.
