The British government, however, offered a £20,000 reward for a device that could accurately measure longitude and, as a result, improve maritime safety and lower the number of sailors who lost their lives in 1714, making that one of the earliest known instances of crowdsourcing. This was done through the Longitude Act of 1714. The first marine chronometer was created as a result of this (Dunn 2014).
