“MISTY BLUE”
by Andrew Hem
Born during his parents flight from Cambodia in the wake of the Khmer Rouge genocide, Andrew Hem grew up balancing the rural animistic society of his Khmer ancestors and the dynamic urban art scene of his Los Angeles neighborhood. Passionate about figure drawing Hem studied at Pasadena's Art Center, and now applies his cool palette and slightly off colors to create often somber narratives typically focused on one individual. In 2017 painted this wall at Friendship and Orange Streets in Providence, Rhode Island for The Avenue Concept. Inspired by the city's robust Cambodian community, @AvenuePVD says he worked from a photo of a young girl he encountered in Cambodia, and set her against a dream-like forest full of trees and fireflies.  @andrewhem/

"STILL HERE"
by Gaia
Completed in 1857 at the corner of Weybosset and Custom House Street in Providence, RI, the domed U.S. Customhouse (visible at right) housed a variety of Federal offices for more than 50 years until replaced by a new Federal Building, and now serves the state judiciary. Commissioned by Providence non-profit @AvenuePVD to paint this prominent wall across the street, Baltimore-based artist Gaia partnered with Narragansett Tribe educator Lynsea Montanari and connected the Custom House Street location with the history of Weybosset Street, named for an indigenous footpath and trading location. Montanari is portrayed in the mural holding a photo of Narragansett elder Princess Red Wing who founded the @TomaquagMuseum 60 years ago.  @gaiastreetart/

“ADVENTURE TIME"
by Natalia Rak
Polish artist Natalia Rak studied fine art in Lodz, focusing on "Spatial and Poster Design.” Perfecting her skills painting canvases Rak moved out of the studio and onto the streets about 10 years ago and her visual narratives, often colorful interpretations of classic stories, have made her a fast hit around the world. In 2015, inspired by Lewis Carroll's tale of Alice's adventures, Rak joined forces with The Avenue Concept and their efforts to promote public art in Providence, RI, and created this Matthewson St portal to a magical world.  @nataliarakart/  @avenuepvd/
