What are carrier oils?
Carrier oil is known as a base oil. Carrier oil is used to dilute essential oils before applying it onto your skin. They act as a base for carrying the essential oil into your skin for a smoother skin. A greater amount of carrier oil is used in diluting essential oils. Carrier oils do not have a strong aroma unlike essential oils and also carrier oils are more volatile. Cold pressing and maceration are two main methods of producing carrier oils.
Carrier oils guide
Carrier oils exist in a vast range having various therapeutic properties. Carrier oils are used in aromatherapy, massages and cosmetic recipes for natural skin and hair care. To make an essential oil dilution using a carrier oil you need a guide on how much percentage dilution is required. For adults use, combine 30ml of carrier oil with 18 drops of essential oil. This makes a 2% dilution. For children or elderly or people with sensitive skin combine 30ml carrier oil with 6-9 drops of essential oil. This makes a 1% dilution. You should always start with less to know about any allergies or reaction on your skin, however more essential oil can always be added for a stronger aroma.
Quality of essential oil
An unadulterated and natural carrier oil is the one known to be of highest quality. The quality of a carrier oil is determined by a few factors such as
⦁ Aroma: A high quality carrier oil is usually odorless or aromas.
⦁ Method of extraction: Most ideally the carrier oil for natural use is cold pressed (Raw).
⦁ Shelf life: Some carrier oils have a shelf life that last up to 6 months and some carrier oils have a shelf life of 1-2 years. To maintain the carrier oil’s quality and maximize it’s shelf life, it should be stored in an air tight container, in a cool and dark place.
Types of essential oils
Carrier oils should be used according to your skin type and also according to their rate of absorption into your skin.
⦁ Normal skin: Coconut, Grape seed, Argan, Castor Oil and Sweet Almond.
⦁ Oily skin: Jojoba, Sweet Almond, Tamanu and Grape Seed.
⦁ Dry skin: Rosehips, Coconut, Castor Oil and Sweet Almond.
⦁ Sensitive skin: Jojoba and Sweet Almond
⦁ Mature skin: Grape Seed, Jojoba, Rosehips, Sweet Almond and Castor Oil.
⦁ Fast absorption rate: Grape Seed and rosehip
⦁ Average absorption rate: Jojoba, Coconut and Argan
⦁ Slow absorption rate: Castor Oil and Sweet Almond
Benefits and uses of carrier oils
⦁ Sweet Almond:
Almond Oil have a slight nutty smell and is full of nutritious vitamins such as vitamin A, B, D and E. It’s easily absorbed by your skin and it’s higher percentage of mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids, makes it wonderful for all skin types. It also moisturizes your skin and is good for massages. It’s great for skin and also helps reduce stretch marks. Carrier oil is also good for hair. Carrier oil also helps reduce acne, improves skin complexion and under-eye circles.
Uses:
⦁ It can be used as a cleanser. It can be mixed with rosehip oil. Add a few drops of essential oil to the sweet almond oil. Apply the mixture onto your skin and rinse with warm water.
⦁ It can also be used as a makeup remover. Apply few drops to the area you want to remove makeup from and then use a cotton ball, then rinse with warm water.
⦁ As a moisturizer. Wash your face, pat dry it and then apply few drops of almond oil on your palm and gently massage it on your faces
⦁ Fractionated Coconut Oil:
Fractionated coconut oil is as clear as water with a light oily texture. Fractionated coconut oil can be used in aromatherapy and has countless benefits to your skin. Coconut oil having many therapeutic properties, is used to relieve stress when used in a relaxing massage. Coconut oil provides a natural glow to skin by soothing and rejuvenating it. It’s also great for dry and damaged hair. It’s anti-bacterial properties makes it beneficial for an acne prone skin.
Uses:
⦁ Coconut Oil helps reduce irritation on your skin after shaving. You can apply it straight away or mix with other essential oils to your skin aftershave to prevent from dehydration and itchiness.
⦁ Coconut Oil is great for scalp to help against the discomfort of dryness and itchiness. Apply it to your hair, leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
⦁ Applying it to your stretch marks can also help reduce stretch marks.
⦁ Massaging with Coconut Oil can also reduce the appearance of cellulite. You can mix lavender and Coconut Oil, gently massage it onto your skin in circular motion.
⦁ Rosehip Oil:
Rosehip Oil is rich in vitamin C and essential fatty acids that is great for skin and it’s reduces wrinkles giving you a younger looking healthier skin. It’s easily absorbed by your skin. Rosehip oil has omega 3 & 6 that our body does not produce and is essential for a healthier skin. Rosehip oil acts as a great moisturizer and is great for reducing stubborn wrinkles.

⦁ Rosehip Oil lightens scars and wrinkles. Apply it in the morning as well as at night to fight wrinkles.
⦁ To help reduce acne mix one Tbsp Jojoba carrier oil, one Tbsp Rosehip Oil, 3 drops Frankincense Oil, 3 drops Lavender Oil and 3 drops Tea Tree Oil.
⦁ Rosehip Oil is also a great moisturizer. Wash your face, pat dry it and apply few drops of Rosehip Oil onto your face.
⦁ Jojoba Oil:
Jojoba Oil is easily absorbed by skin. It doesn’t have a scent of it’s own and is a great carrier oil choice for an irritated skin or acne prone skin. It has an indefinite shelf life. Jojoba Oil once applied on your skin makes a barrier that protects skin from losing moisture. It’s rich in vitamin E making Jojoba Oil a great anti-oxidant.
Uses:
⦁ For healthy, thicker hair apply few drops to your favorite shampoo and conditioner.
⦁ Mix Almond Oil and Jojoba Oil and gently massage it on your skin once a day for a glow on your face.
⦁ Argan oil:
The fragrance of Argan Oil depends upon the time it was harvested. Argan Oil is used in aromatherapy. Argan Oil is nutrient rich and act as a natural moisturizer to your skin. ⦁ Massage a few drops of Grape Seed Oil on your skin before you sleep at night for a tightened pores and fresh younger looking skin
