Laszlo Moholy-Nagy

Born July 20, 1895 in Hungary as Laszlo Weisz

Left to study law in Budapest in 1913 but ended up joining the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1914

After being wounded in he was hospitalized and during this recovery he made his first sketches where he focused on line as a fundamental element

Once he returned to Budapest in 1918 he wanted to become a painter

After the collapse of the Hungarian communist republic in 1919 he left for Vienna in Germany which was a rallying point for young left wing Hungarians

During this period he shifted from figure paintings to works that combined lines and geometric shapes with iconographic elements

Nagy became interested in typographical material

He played around with the concept of type-photo (which combined typography and photography) this was the beginning of the central medium of graphic design

"What is typophoto? Typography is communication composed in type. Photography is the visual presentation of what can be optically apprehended. Typophoto is the visually most exact rendering of communication." (Moholy-Nagy 1973)

Made during the Bauhaus era (1919-1933)

Special photo issue cover of Qualitat Magazine in 1931

Moholy liked to use a method called photograms or cameraless photographs that were made by placing everyday objects on light sensitive paper and then exposing the set up to light

He used a negative mirror image of a previous work combined with another photogram, a photograph of a camera, and typography

Moholy created a relevant paradigm for todays world of images spread not in print but by internet
