Week 1 - Given Task
Task: Book a campsite for two people at the DOC run Totaranui Campground for January 2020.
1. Searched “Totaranui campground January 2020” into the google search bar.
2. Clicked on “DOC” website. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/book-online/?op=departme75&pid=7497&rmtype=33051
3. Selected dates then tried to click “Go” button. The button only reloaded the same page without any progress.
4. Tried to change the dates, with a pop up in a red button “Click Go to update rooms and rates” which then only reloaded the page with again no progress. This was frustrating and confuser for the user.
5. User was then desperate and clicked on “Availability Calendar” to which a new window opened with the calendar dates including when the campground it not available to book highlighted in bright red.
6. User then used the clear arrow keys to toggle between months to try view when the campground was available, only to find it is booked out until... infinity?
7. User tried to click “Next” in which a red error message appeared stating nothing had been selected, even though there was nowhere to select details. At this point the user gave up and decided to book a holiday elsewhere.
It took 7 clicks for the user to try book a stay at the campground before they gave up. This is far too many clicks and could be compressed down into 4-5 if the interfaced worked and was more clear.
Ideal process would appear as:
Search for site
Select dates
Select amount of people
Confirm booking on a separate page
What worked well:
Searching for the site was easy with few key words.
Accessing the website was easy as it was the first that appears in the search engine.
Booking was on the homepage, efficient navigation
Pain points:
The green “Go” button was frustrating as it did not work.
Not visually appealing, no images, small text.
Couldn't choose how many people, cost not visible.
Not available to book at all, which was not communicated until viewing a calendar.
Refinement:
State that bookings can only be made a couple months in advanced more clearly, and not be able to view things if the booking is tried to be made outside of this period
The navigation was efficient to the booking, just the booking process was not working.
Compare to Air New Zealand:
Search for ANZ site
Select location, dates and people.
Click “Search”
Select there and return flights
Click “Continue”
Login and confirm
The Air New Zealand site was very efficient to book flights, with the process taking only 6 ‘clicks’. If the DOC site was refined to be similar in design and UX the process would be much easier and less frustrating
