2017 Australian Open results and bracket: Andy Murray stunned by unseeded Mischa Zverev

Andy Murray is out, leaving Milos Raonic as the top remaining seed at the Australian Open.

World No. 1 Andy Murray was stunned on the seventh day of the 2017 Australian Open, when he was booted from the tournament after a loss to the unseeded Mischa Zverev of Germany in four sets. Murray dropped serve eight times in the match, with Zverev ultimately posting a win at 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

At the time of writing, a match between men’s fifth seed Kei Nishikori and 17th seed Roger Federer is still ongoing. The women’s top seed, Angelique Kerber, will face unseeded American Coco Vandeweghe after the Nishikori vs. Federer matchup.

But Murray’s ousting is still huge news. He joins Novak Djokovic on the sidelines, and now the “big four” has been seriously diminished. Rafael Nada, the 10th seed and Federer are still in the tournament, though technically its third seed Milos Raonic who should not be favored to win the whole thing.

Zverev will face the winner of the matchup between Federer and Nishikori in the quarterfinals, so it doesn’t really get any easier from here. Zverev is the lowest-ranked player Murray has lost to at a Grand Slam in over a decade.

Fourth seed Stan Wawrinka also has to be feeling good, having beaten Andreas Seppi. No. 12 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga needed four sets, but he too prevailed on the day, besting Daniel Evans.

On the women’s side, eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova found herself on the losing end of a very close battle. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was the one who handed out that loss, beating Kuznetsova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
