PK (2014)
Film review #560
Director: Rajkumar Hirani
SYNOPSIS: An alien arrives on Earth, and has his communicator with his spaceship stolen. Now stranded on the planet, he attempts to learn how to survive and learn the ways of the people here, but he is especially confused by the concept of religion. He meets Jaggu, a reporter who is looking for her next big story. She is intrigued by his naivety and how his simple questions challenge the conflicts between different religions, and how those that profess to know what God wants are the ones who know least about religion. Jaggu and PK show down with Tapaswi, a religious leader who has come into possession of PK’s communicator, claiming to be a religious artefact, and the pair try to expose him and get PK’s communicator back to he can return home...
THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: PK is a 2014 Indian sci-fi film. The story primarily revolves around PK, an alien who, in the film’s opening, lands on Earth, and shortly after has his communicator with his spaceship stolen, meaning he has no way to get back home. Attempting to adjust to life on Earth, he turns to God for help, but is perpetually confused by all of the different religions and their rules. He eventually encounters Jaggu, a reporter who is looking out for a worthwhile story, and becomes interested by PK’s naïve take on the world, and how it provides genuine insight on the world from a fresh perspective. Opting to tackle the absolute minefield that is differences and conflicts between religions, PK from the outset sets itself a dangerous task, but the comedic aspect of the film never strays into being offensive or controversial, focusing on what the religions have in common, rather than their confrontations. This might seem to be a bit simplistic, but this is one of the film’s greatest strengths; it manoeuvres through it’s subject in such an expert manner that it creates an entertaining experience full of life. On top of this, the dialogue and performances are precise and genuine, and again, are professionally executed.
The film is essentially divided into two halves: the first half deals with the more comedic aspects and a very “fish out of water” situation surrounding PK being stranded on Earth. The second half switches to a more drama and serious tone, with PK trying to expose the religious preacher Tapaswi, and get back his communicator that Tapaswi is claiming to be a religious icon to his followers. Again, when the film gets serious, it still maintains it’s expert exploration of it’s subject: avoiding being controversial, but still making a significant statement and creating some intense emotional moments. Even though the film is almost split down the middle, the change of tone doesn’t feel artificial, and feels like it moves on just when it needs to. If I were to find a fault in the plot, I would say the forced romance element that shows up at the final part of the film and about “letting go” just didn’t really need to be there, but even then, it is handled so well in terms of dialogue and acting, and producing a emotional reaction that it doesn’t really matter that it wasn’t really necessary, because it still produces something worthwhile.
The cast work so well in their roles, and although they are roles you are probably familiar with, such as PK being a clueless alien adjusting to life on Earth, they are still brought to life vibrantly, as mentioned, through stellar acting and sharp dialogue, and in the end it feels like you come out of it with a well rounded experience that never hits a lull. Despite having a few bumps in the story with a few elements that it could have done without, I think it is necessary to give PK high praise as a film: it is lots of fun, but also very heartfelt, alongside making a powerful statement without being mired in controversy. The film deserves the praise it received, and in particular, the absolutely solid script and dialogue, enhanced further with a host of strong performances. Not quite perfect, but deserving of it’s huge success.

3 Idiots - Reaction Paper
From what I’ve seen in the movie "3 Idiots", it is a fun and deep movie from India because it mixes laughs with big ideas about what's wrong with how we teach and the pressure society puts on us. It was directed by Rajkumar Hirani. It tells the story of three friends studying to be engineers at a top college, their bond, finding themselves, and going against what society expects. I have observed that the story is built around very real types of people, each showing different sides of society and how we learn. Three big characters stand out and each one shows us a unique view of the world and how they deal not just with school, but life's big tests, using hope, laughs, and the power of sticking together.
The first character is Rancho (Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad), for me, he is all about being different and free. His way of living and learning goes against what most people in India think is right. Rancho shows that learning should be about really getting it, not just remembering stuff. His saying, "All is well," shares the idea of staying strong and happy, no matter what. His love for life and strong belief in doing what you love makes his friends and those watching feel inspired.
The next character is Farhan Qureshi,  who is the classic Indian youth stuck between what his family wants and what he wants. Though his heart lies in taking pictures of wild animals, he gives in to the pressure around him and joins an engineering course to make his dad's wish come true. Farhan's battle shows the hard fight many face in matching their own dreams with what family and society expect from them. His path to finding out what he truly loves to do is a strong nudge to go after your dreams without fear.
The third main character is Raju Rastogi, his role is more like of a financially poor student who also is ought to fend for his family. His character portrays the ugly nature of the Indian society which is governed by money and class and carries many of the disadvantaged people. He is smart and consistent, however, he is under the endless threat of failure and the burden of family expectations. The way of his character personifies the pervasive injustices of the school system and society in general where the opportunities are divided on the basis of the class and income sources. The path of a young man, finding his determination and the conviction to take a stand for his principles, represents the inner strength of a person.
Additionally, the movie also brings to light the importance of friends and comrades as it reveals how those pure bonds affect how we discover ourselves. Even if they had different characters, the trio became a team that no one could ever break because it was based on true and mutual respect for each other. As a vital part of their complex collegiate journey, their friendships become a key source of courage, which provides them a safe place during schoolwork and individual hardships. The film also shows the power of friendship that promotes development, strengthens the capacity to cope with challenges, and promotes the process of self-awareness. It also puts an immense critique of the rat race mentality that affects the aspects of Indian society and portrays popular success as a wealthy employment or an advanced degree. I have also observed that the film illustrates the negative impacts of both parental and society pressure on people's happiness and well-being through the characters of Farhan and Raju, who fight against societal expectations and personal pressures. I also think this raises the concern about the idea of success and encourages viewers to redefine their own goals and honestly pursue their aspirations.

Shah Rukh Khan dedicates Best Actor for Jawan to his kids Aryan, Suhana and AbRam in roaring speech: “Jab tak tumhara baap zinda hai…”
Shah Rukh Khan once again proved why he is hailed as the ultimate showman of Indian cinema. At the Zee Cine Awards 2024 on Sunday, Shah Rukh Khan set the stage on fire with his dynamic presence. He also won the Best Actor award for Jawan and his speech has now gone viral on social media.
Tumblr media
Recently when a fan account of the superstar shared a series of video clips on X (formerly Twitter) from the awards held in Mumbai, SRK’s honest and emotional acceptance speech, floored the netizens. In the latest video, posted on Tuesday, the 58-year-old was heard saying, “It has been some time since I won an award. Kuch aath-nau saal ho gaye (Eight-nine years have gone by since I won the best actor trophy). Love hi love mil raha the, award nahi mil raha tha (I was receiving love but no awards). This is my first award after many years.”
“This message goes out to my children and my wife. Jab tak tumhara baap zinda hai, entertainment zinda hai (As long as your father is alive, there will be entertainment),” he said, and left the audiences in splits.
Addressing Atlee, the director of the film, he said, “First credit goes to Atlee and then to Priya. She left her house down south and spent four years in Mumbai. Their child also was born here. I often say that the credit for the film’s success goes to his son, Meer. So thank you, Atlee.”
“I want to share something personal. About four-five years ago, my films flopped and I got upset with myself. Main ghar par baith gaya aur pizza aur rotiyaan banane laga baccho ke sath (I sat at home and started baking pizzas and making rotis with my children). I started playing with my children. The next three-four years were wasted due to the COVID-19 pandemic (sic),” he talked about the lull period in his career.
On the professional front, Shah Rukh Khan's latest film venture, Dunki, directed by Rajkumar Hirani and featuring Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal, was a decent success at the box office. He will next star in Sujoy Ghosh’s King starring Suhana Khan.

Dunki Movie Review: DUNKI bears the Rajkumar Hirani stamp of filmmaking with the right message and emotions.
Dunki Review {3.5/5} & Review Rating
DUNKI is the story of four youths trying to fly abroad for a better life. The year is 1995. Army officer Hardayal Singh Dhillon aka Hardy (Shah Rukh Khan) arrives in Laltu, Punjab to meet Mahendar, who saved his life. He reaches his house and finds out that Mahendar is no more.  Mahendar lost a golden opportunity in sports while trying to save Hardy and then passed away in an accident. Hardy takes it upon himself to help Mahendar's family. Mahendar's sister Manu (Taapsee Pannu) asks Hardy to help her with wrestling. This is because she wants to go to the UK to earn and win back her house that her father had lost due to non-payment of a loan. An agent has assured her that she can be sent on a sports visa and hence, she wants to learn the basic techniques of a sport. Hardy teaches her wrestling. However, the agent usurps money from Manu, Balli Kakkad (Anil Grover), Buggu Lakhanpal (Vikram Kochhar), and others and runs away. With no other option, Manu, Balli, and Buggu approach Geetu Gulati (Boman Irani) for help. He runs an English-speaking institute and promises to help those trying to clear their IELTS exam. The trio along with Hardy enroll in his classes. Here, they meet Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal), and all five become close friends. They aim to reach the UK by hook or by crook. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
Tumblr media
Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani and Kanika Dhilon's story is superb and very relatable, especially for those from the South Asian diaspora. Many people from this belt have faced issues with immigration and hence, they’ll connect with the plot. Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani, and Kanika Dhilon's screenplay is a mixed bag. While some moments are emotional and hilarious, the script overall could have been much better, especially when it's penned by Abhijat and Rajkumar. Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani and Kanika Dhilon's dialogues are witty at places but again, going by their previous work, the one-liners should have had far more punch.
Rajkumar Hirani's direction is simplistic. As always, he uses his laugh-cry-drama formula successfully. Hence, the film doesn’t ever get slow or boring. There’s no dull moment. The film starts in the present day and the way the dynamics are shown, one gets curious to know what must have happened with the characters. It also gives a déjà vu of the beginning of 3 IDIOTS [2009]. The scenes where Hardy and his team try to learn English and their visa interviews are worth watching. The intermission point is quite strong. In the second half, the scenes of Hardy in the UK court and the whole Saudi Arabia sequence turn out to be the best parts of the film. The ending is moving, and the stats mentioned are quite hard-hitting and depressing. Thankfully, the final scene is funny, and the film ends on a lighter note.
On the flipside, the writing is not up to the mark. The makers haven’t focused on the families and their sufferings. Viewers should feel that the characters had a strong reason to move to the UK. But this aspect was not properly touched upon. Secondly, the humorous scenes in the first half don’t bring the house down. The same applies to Manu’s fake marriage episode. And this was necessary as all previous works of Rajkumar Hirani wowed the audience. As a result, one can’t help but expect tremendously from his films. DUNKI is nowhere close to MUNNA BHAI, 3 IDIOTS, PK, etc, and hence, audiences will feel a bit dejected, despite the film’s strong points.
Speaking of performances, Shah Rukh Khan does well and brings alive the humour and emotions effectively. However, as an old man, he’s not quite convincing. Nevertheless, it’s heartening to see him shed his superstar aura and play a character role after witnessing him in massier avatars in PATHAAN and DUNKI. Taapsee Pannu is a revelation and delivers a smashing performance. She gets the nuances in the old-age scenes quite right. Vicky Kaushal rocks the show in a cameo. Anil Grover and Vikram Kochhar are lovely and lend able support. Boman Irani and Deven Bhojani (Puru Patel) are lovely. Others do well.
Pritam's music is not of chartbuster variety, but the songs are well-woven into the narrative. 'Lutt Putt Gaya' comes at a fine juncture and is pleasant. 'Main Tera Rasta Dekhunga' stands out. 'Nikle The Kabhi Hum Ghar Se', 'O Maahi' and 'Banda' are in sync with the film’s theme. Aman Pant's background score is appropriate.
Muraleedharan C K, Manush Nandan and Amit Roy's cinematography is breathtaking and gives the film a big-screen appeal. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray's production design is authentic. Sham Kaushal's action is limited. Eka Lakhani's costumes are realistic and non-glamorous. Rajkumar Hirani's editing is slick.
On the whole, DUNKI bears the Rajkumar Hirani stamp of filmmaking with the right message and emotions as a backdrop. However, it is not as outstanding as his previous films as the writing plays spoilsport to a great extent. At the box office, it will turn out to be a mix bag.

Mahaveer Jain also revealed that Aamir Khan gave a suggestion that gave a beautiful perspective to the Newcomers initiative.
EXCERPTS:
Q ) There's a lot of buzz around the _Newcomers_ initiative, please tell us about it.
MJ: The basic thought came to us after realising a few things -
1 ) For our industry’s growth - we need an influx of talent - actors, writers, directors, technicians, musicians, etc. and to enhance this eco-system we need to curate more stars. It’s the need of the hour and this will enable us to produce more content that our audience is demanding.
2) Our country is full of talent, all we need to do, is to create a system for them to reach, learn and flourish in our entertainment industry.
3 ) Almost all leading filmmakers & established stakeholders of our fraternity, want to support, mentor & launch New Talent, as in their hearts, they all wish to give back to the industry that has given them so much, & of course when each one started their own journey, someone supported them too. As our friend Nitesh Tiwari says ‘It’s our payback time’.
Q ) What is the USP of Newcomers?
MJ: I think... it’s quite inclusive & collaborative in its very nature; More than 30 leading filmmakers of our country have come together with a strong commitment, backed by a thought-through strategy to create stars of tomorrow, this is the true USP. I am deeply grateful that they all felt the way we felt and became part of this initiative with absolute enthusiasm. They now own this feeling equally & shall lead it from the front.
Also, I am very thankful to Rajkumar Hirani Ji and Jyoti Deshpande for believing in this vision and supporting it wholeheartedly. Jio Studios is a great partner, and a fantastic team for this crucial enterprise.
Aamir bhai (Aamir Khan) gave a suggestion which provided us a beautiful perspective for this initiative.
Q ) Earlier, you had played a role in taking a delegation of the film industry to meet the Prime Minister and addressed its concerns. What motivates you?
MJ: I love films and people of the industry. I try to do my bit in whatever small ways I can. I am extremely grateful to our PM, that he gave us an empathetic ear for addressing many of our concerns and it’s because of him, they could eventually be resolved. I have the highest respect for him, and feel that he immensely admires & encourages creative people, as we play a substantial role in spreading love, hope and happiness which are the strongest pillars of nation building.
I truly feel blessed that I got an opportunity to be a small part of it.
Q) So what’s next for you now?
MJ: The most important catalyst for our industry’s growth is the Newcomers initiative. I wish, we build a strong support system for more & more deserving talent to reach here and together we help them nurture and grow. I am fully committed to this cause.
To identify, the fresh talent, soon we’ll be releasing the ‘Newcomers’ app, so talent can reach out to us.
We invite all our fraternity seniors as well, to be a part of this welcoming initiative.
Q ) Uunchai touched an emotional chord with the audience, what was your response to this tremendous love?
MJ: We are full of gratitude for all the love and respect we received. It’s so overwhelming that philosophy of the film moved people, will cherish this experience forever. Also, wish to be associated with Rajshri & Sooraj ji again, they are such wonderful rare people.
Q ) Final words ?
MJ: I am a strong believer in the impact created by this medium, we wish to strengthen healthy entertainment and I always say - let’s not compete here; let’s contribute - towards the larger purpose… to spread hope & happiness, let’s celebrate life with this influential medium.

According to people close to the project, the film will be a large-scale action thriller that will begin production in November 2024. "Shah Rukh Khan plans to finish work on this untitled Sujoy Ghosh directorial by March 2023, and then move on to India's biggest action film, Tiger vs Pathaan, with his friend, Salman Khan."
