Why is Ram Navami Celebrated?
Reading time- 5 mins
The festival of Ram Navami is celebrated across India with lots of fervor and reverence in observance of the auspicious occasion of Prabhu Shriram’s birthday. Prabhu Shriram is one of the most worshiped deities among all Hindu gods and Navami signifies his birth on the ninth day of the Chaitra month known as the Chaitra Navratri. The Chaitra month is the first month in the Hindu lunar calendar and hence marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year which falls during the spring season.
Prabhu Shriram was born on the Navami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Treta Yug as the eldest son of Dashrath, the king of Ayodhya, and Kaushalya, one of Dashrath’s three wives. Lord Ram grew up to become the great ‘Maryada Purushottam Ram’ owing to his humility, loyalty, sacrifice, dedication towards his family and people, deep respect for elders, immense love for those younger than him, and upholding the highest ethical standards throughout his life. Believed to be the seventh reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, Shriram was born to slay the evil force in the guise of Ravana, restore peace and reinforce the victory of good over evil. These are the reasons why Ram Navami holds such a special place in the Hindu religion and culture.
The festival is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm across the length and breadth of the country, especially Ayodhya, the birthplace of lord Shri Ram. The festival coincides with nine days of fasting during Navratri and the performing of special religious rituals by the devotees in temples across India. Each of the nine days is devoted to the nine avatars (incarnations) of Goddess Durga finally culminating in Ram Navami. This year i.e. 2023, the Chaitra Navratri began on 22nd March and ends on 30th March. Devotees start the pious day of Ram Navami by offering prayers to the sun God as Prabhu Shriram is believed to be the descendant of the sun. Religious ceremonies and rituals begin early in the day that last till late evening on Ram Navami including the organizing of Bhajan, Kirtan, Havan, Puja, and Bhandara, etc. by the devotees.
Every temple in Ayodhya, the birthplace of Shri Ram, is thronged with large crowds of devotees to receive the lord’s blessings. Devotees fast the whole day on Ram Navami and are involved in religious ceremonies such as singing devotional songs, reciting vedic mantras, organizing religious processions et al. The highlight of the day is the grand chariot procession on the streets of Ayodhya which is an event worth witnessing. Aesthetically embellished idols or images of Lord Shri Ram, Mata Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman are placed in the beautifully adorned chariot. The devotees of Lord Shri Ram also take a holy dip in the sacred river Saryu in Ayodhya, an important part of their traditional ritual.
No Indian home remains untouched by the glory and festive spirit of Ram Navami. Devotees of Shri Ram in every single household offer their soulful prayers by bathing and adorning the idol of Shri Ram with beautiful clothes and ornaments. The idol is placed in a cradle and devotees gently rock the cradle as a gesture of their immense love and affection for the newly born Lord Shri Ram. Kheer, a traditional Indian sweet dish is prepared in every home and served to the devotees on this auspicious occasion.
Celebrating the grandeur & legacy of Lord Shriram and taking inspiration from his teachings, Prabhu Shriram, India’s best Agarbatti and Dhoop has created endearing fragrances to make the special occasion of Ram Navami even more special with their exclusive incense collections. Prabhu Shriram’s most popular fragrance collections include the “Shripad Ramayan Series” Divine Box is based on the ten most significant events from Shri Ram’s life; the Temple series gives the experience of the divine aura of the Incredible temples of India at the comfort of your home; and the Shraddha Shakti series spreads the gives ultimate power to your prayers, this Ram Navami.

Nav Varsh Abhinandan
The beautiful Spring season is here and the Chaitra Navratri shall follow soon. The new leaves, buds and flowers signify new life, new beginnings, prosperity and renewed hope! Our ancients calculated the new year from the auspicious Chaitra month. On 22 March, 1957, the Gregorian calendar was adopted for official purposes. 22 March, 2023 of the Gregorian calendar marks the beginning of the Vikrami Samvat 2080.

(The image above shows 12 Pictures of The Sun, Each Month, Same Place, Same Time. Photo by Ciro Russo)
Lord Brahma started creating the universe on the first day of the Chaitra Navratri. Jau (barley) was the first crop to be cultivated then. We sow Jau and grow Khetri in reverence of this crop and then offer it back to Mother Nature. King Vikramaditya was coronated King on this day. The Vikrami Samvat or the Hindu calendar is named after him.
Navratri literally means nine nights. These nights are symbolic of the darkness of ignorance. The purpose of celebrating Navratri is to enable humans to overcome this darkness. When we worship the Devi or the Mother Goddess, she is the unified form of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. These three forms together form Shakti (power). This Shakti is the energy that is emanant in Nature and the Lord himself controls it. The ninth day of the Chaitra Navratri is Ram Navami. This marks the birthday and the coronation of Bhagwan Rama.
The feminine aspect of Divinity is worshipped in Navratri. Sri Sathya Sai Baba says that the word Stree is made up of- Sa, Ta and Ra. Sa signifies Sattvic, Ta signifies Tamasic and Ra signifies the Rajasic nature of women. Stree thus represents the combination of the three gunas. You can judge a house by the Greh-Lakhmi (lady of the house), she represents the ‘everything’ of the house. The Vedas declare that where women are honoured, there divinity is present with all its potency. We worship five kinds of mothers. Firstly, we worship the Deha-Mata. She is the one who bore us for nine months and gave us the gift of life. Secondly, we worship the Gau-Mata. The cow is given the exalted position of a mother because she sustains us by converting her blood into milk. Thirdly, we revere the Bhu-Mata or Mother Earth. She is the one, on whom we are dependant for everything like shelter, water, food etc. Fourthly, we revere the Desh-Mata. Our country gives us protection, rights and the support system of society. Indians are perhaps the only people who revere the country as Mother India. Fifthly, we revere the Veda-Mata. We revere the Vedas as our heritage and as spiritual treasures. They tell us the purpose of life and guide us on the path of self-realisation.
For those who are not spiritually inclined, I would say that Navaratri is a time to revere nature and offer thanksgiving for all that nature has bestowed us with. Resources like the Earth, air, water, minerals, oils etc. should not be wasted or misused. It is important to conserve the environment for the generations to come.
Scientifically speaking, the Chaitra Navratri is placed at the intersection of winter and summer. The body needs to detox at this time to adjust itself for the upcoming summer season. And that is exactly why Navratri fasting is recommended. You can have fruits and nuts along with one meal of alternate grains (no cereals like wheat, rice etc.). Navratri foods include Kuttu ka atta, Swaank ke chawal, Singhaare ka aata, etc. And you cook with Rock salt which is an excellent detoxifying agent. But remember that a fast is a fast, as long as you don’t convert it into a feast!
So let’s do Devi Pooja in Navratri and revere the Mother Goddess in her beautiful Nav-Durga form. And while doing Devi-Poojan and Kanya-Poojan, do extend the respect to all the living goddesses around you … your mother, wife, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law and just any girl out there! Happy Navratri!

Get Lord Ram’s blessing on this Ram Navmi 2023
Tumblr media
The birth of Lord Ram is commemorated annually by the festival of the Ram Navmi. It occurs during the ninth day of the waxing phase of the moon, known as Shukla Paksha, during the month of Chait or Chaitra (March – April). The date of Ram Navmi 2023 is the 30th of March. Moreover, it denotes the conclusion of the Chaitra Navratri festival. Maryada Purushottam is the name given to Lord Rama, who is considered to be the personification of chivalry and morality. Lord Rama is the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Know about the auspicious day of Ram Navmi. Get an online astrology consultation by the world-renowned Astrologer Mr. Alok Khandelwal.
During Chaitra Shukla Paksha Navmi, which is the ninth day of the waxing phase of the moon in the Chaitra month, Bhagavan Sri Ram appeared in Punarvasu Nakshatra when he was under the influence of Karka Rashi.
Ram Navmi is the ninth and last day of the nine-day Chaitra or Vasant Navratri festival that is celebrated in Northern India. The week is also known as Ramayana week and is celebrated in many different places in India.
On this day, believers of Hinduism observe a fast and do pujas at noon, as it is considered that the birth of Lord Rama took place at this hour.
Ram Navmi at Vishnu Temples
During this time, special pujas are performed at people’s homes as well as in Lord Ram and Vishnu temples located all over India and the rest of the world.
At the Tirupati Balaji Temple situated in Andhra Pradesh, this day holds a significant amount of significance. The pujas and ceremonies are performed over the course of two consecutive days.
On this day, the celebrated festival of Brahmotsavam takes place at the illustrious Bhadrachalam Sri Rama Temple.
Swaminarayan Jayanti is commemorated on Ram Navami day.

How Should One Observe the Day of Ram Navmi?
On the day of Ram Navmi, after the home has been meticulously cleaned, an idol or portrait of Lord Ram is placed in the chamber that is used for worship. In addition to a picture of Lord Rama, some people have images of Mata Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman in their homes.
The area around the deities is decorated with bananas, Tulsi leaves, and flowers typically used for puja.
It is considered that the birth of Lord Ram took place around noon, hence the most significant puja is carried out at that time.
An Arati is performed at midday, followed by the singing of religious bhajans. Tika is applied, and then water is sprayed all over the persons that are present.
When the puja prasad is distributed at noon, a lot of people break their fast with it.
A Ram Bhajan or a Vishnu Sahasranama may be included among the devotional songs that are sung. On this day, passages from the Ramayana, in particular the chapter known as Bala Khanda, are read aloud.
In addition to that, there are individuals who abstain from food for the entirety of the day. There are also communities that practise the nirjala fast, which involves abstaining from water during the fast.
During Ram Navmi, the people of South India perform an elaborate puja, and a traditional fan called a visari is given away alongside the ‘Prasadam.’ After breaking the fast, the day’s activities include the preparation of foods and beverages that have a cooling effect on the body. They are then consumed.
The Magnificence of Lord Sri Rama
The name of Lord Sri Ram is a wish-yielding tree that is the very abode of the spiritual state in this age of Kaliyug. In other words, the name of Lord Sri Ram is a tree that grants wishes.
Not only in this Kaliyou age, but also in all of the other four ages, at all times (past, present, and future), and in all three domains (namely, heaven, earth, and the subterranean region), beings have been liberated from their suffering by repeatedly reciting the name of Sri Ram.
