Mike Gotovac. Legend. When I didn't have any money I would go to Dan Tana's for my birthday and put it on a credit card. I did this for many years. When you have a reservation you have to wait at the bar until your table is ready. Every year I saw Mike at the bar. I think he was also taking bets…who knows.

According to a Facebook post from Dan Tana’s, Gotovac was born in Croatia and left communist Yugoslavia to make his way to Germany, eventually landing with the tight-knit Croatian-American community in Los Angeles. He began working at Dan Tana’s in 1968 and was known for his passion for soccer and Croatian freedom.
Dan Tana’s says Gotovac’s family will hold a private service for him, but that the West Hollywood icon left instructions for a party and that details will be released at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Gotovac’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Gotovac leaves behind a wife, two sisters, three sons and three granddaughters.

What Is Ventilation: How Does It Impact Your HVAC Comfort?
Tumblr media
We all know that heating and air conditioning systems are essential to the comfort of our homes and work spaces. Yet the “V” (for ventilation) in HVAC may be something of a mystery. What is ventilation and why do you need it?
Ventilation improves comfort and air quality
The simple reason is, ventilation is required for both HVAC comfort and good air quality. Without enough ventilation in your space, you will eventually (and sometimes quickly) experience comfort issues and even health problems. These could range from having trouble sleeping in a stuffy bedroom to experiencing Sick Building Syndrome in a commercial space.
Experts (including ASHRAE) have also recommended increasing ventilation to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by diluting virus particles.
So what is ventilation exactly, and how does it work with heating and air conditioning systems to maximize your HVAC comfort and air quality?
Read on to find out.
What is ventilation: the “V” in HVAC
According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), an HVAC system should “heat, cool, clean, ventilate, humidify and dehumidify as needed to provide health and HVAC comfort.”
You’re probably familiar with all the other components: heating, cooling and even humidification and de-humidification. But what is ventilation all about and how does it contribute to HVAC comfort? It’s about adding the proper amount of fresh air from outside to the indoor air in your space.
In fact, ASHRAE’s definition goes on to explain that ventilation is one of the most important jobs of an HVAC system. Why? Because without it, in the best case your space lacks fresh air and becomes stagnant and uncomfortable. In the worst case, you can be trapping in toxins and contaminants that can make people sick. It’s so important that ASHRAE publishes a detailed standard for ventilation requirements for acceptable indoor air quality.
If you live or work in an older building, it’s likely that outdoor air is seeping inside through leaky ducts, poorly insulated walls, and poorly sealed windows and doors. In a way this is a good thing, because you are probably getting sufficient ventilation to ensure HVAC comfort. However, it comes with a price: lost energy efficiency. When outdoor air can easily travel in, it makes your air conditioner work harder in summer and your heating system work harder in the winter, which drives up your energy bills. And of course, it also works the other way around: all your expensive conditioned indoor air that’s at just the right temperature is also leaking out.
What is ventilation provided mechanically?
Fortunately there’s an alternative to relying on your building to “breathe” through every available crack and opening to get enough ventilation for HVAC comfort. It’s called mechanical ventilation, and it’s essential for modern homes and commercial buildings that are increasingly built to be air-tight for energy efficiency.
This may be an unfamiliar term: what is ventilation that’s provided mechanically? It simply means using equipment to control when, where and how much outside air is added to your space. Mechanical ventilation uses ducts and fans to draw in and distribute fresh air throughout your space, and sometimes to exhaust air from specific areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
The benefits of mechanical ventilation for your air quality & HVAC comfort
Mechanical ventilation is beneficial not only for energy efficiency, but to provide more control over the amount of outdoor air added, as well as its source.
Controlling the amount of fresh air As we mentioned, when too much outside air is coming in, that can impede the functioning of your HVAC system (and your HVAC comfort) and drive up your energy bills. It can also create an air balance problem in your space if more air is coming in than going out. Do you have door opening by themselves, or odors migrating where you don’t want them, like from a restroom to where customers can notice? Or from a restaurant kitchen to the dining room? That’s a sign of an air balance problem caused by poorly designed ventilation.
Not enough fresh air coming in makes your space stuffy and traps in undesirable air and everything that’s lurking in it, including odors, moisture and even contaminants.
The EPA recommends the use of mechanical ventilation to prevent the buildup of odors, excess moisture and pollutants in your space. Odors are annoying and in a business situation can cost you money. Moisture can lead to worse problems: mold growth and also damage to furnishings, equipment and finishes.
Mechanical ventilation provides the ability to expel odors and moisture from areas. This is important for residential kitchens and bathrooms, but essential for commercial spaces such as restaurant kitchens, gyms and locker rooms, and restrooms.
Obviously expelling pollutants, especially VOCs that you might not even be able to smell or detect, is an important step to safeguard the health of everyone breathing the air in your space.
Related article: Sick Building: Try Air Conditioner Preventative Maintenance
Controlling the source of fresh air Mechanical ventilation systems also provide the ability to control where outside air comes from, as well as where indoor air is exhausted from the building.
Why is this important for HVAC comfort? Let’s look at a couple of examples.
If your home or business happens to be located next to a restaurant, or a gas station, or an industrial facility, you want to avoid odors from your neighbor migrating into your space. The right mechanical ventilation system can be designed to locate intakes on the other side of your building, and as far away as possible from sources of odors and pollutants.
Exhaust locations are just as important. You don’t want moisture-laden air exhausted into an area where it can cause damage. Or odors and pollutants expelled where family members or customers will be breathing them in.
Related article: Improve Air Conditioning: Avoid These Ductwork Design Mistakes
Choosing the right type of mechanical ventilation is important
There are various types of mechanical ventilation systems; some are connected to your HVAC system, while others are separate. The type that will work best for your HVAC comfort depends on your space, its usage and even on your climate. Certain types of mechanical ventilation are designed for hot and humid climates, others for cold climates, and others for mixed climates such as we experience here in the New York City area.
Choosing the wrong system can cause a buildup of moisture that can damage your space and even lead to mold growth.
That’s why it’s so important to choose an HVAC company that understands the “V” in HVAC as well as heating and air conditioning.
It can be a challenge to choose an HVAC service provider that can provide the professional expertise needed to support a large facility. Get this informative guide that can help you properly vet candidates: The NYC Facilities Manager’s Guide to Choosing an HVAC Company.

Little Richard was one of rock ‘n’ roll’s founding fathers who helped shatter the color line on the music charts, joining Chuck Berry and Fats Domino in bringing what was once called “race music” into the mainstream. Richard’s hyperkinetic piano playing, coupled with his howling vocals and hairdo, made him an implausible sensation — a gay, black man celebrated across America during the buttoned-down Eisenhower era.
He sold more than 30 million records worldwide, and his influence on other musicians was equally staggering, from the Beatles and Otis Redding to Creedence Clearwater Revival and David Bowie. In his personal life, he wavered between raunch and religion, alternately embracing the Good Book and outrageous behavior.
“Little Richard? That’s rock ‘n’ roll,” Neil Young, who heard Richard’s riffs on the radio in Canada, told biographer Jimmy McDonough. “Little Richard was great on every record.”
It was 1956 when his classic “Tutti Frutti” landed like a hand grenade in the Top 40, exploding from radios and off turntables across the country. It was highlighted by Richard’s memorable call of “wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-lop-bam-boom.”
A string of hits followed, providing the foundation of rock music: “Lucille,” “Keep A Knockin’,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Good Golly Miss Molly.” More than 40 years after the latter charted, Bruce Springsteen was still performing “Good Golly Miss Molly” live.
The Beatles’ Paul McCartney imitated Richard’s signature yelps — perhaps most notably in the “Wooooo!” from the hit “She Loves You.” Ex-bandmate John Lennon covered Richard’s “Rip It Up” and “Ready Teddy” on the 1975 “Rock and Roll” album.
When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened in 1986, he was among the charter members with Elvis Presley, Berry, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sam Cooke and others.
Few were quicker to acknowledge Little Richard’s seminal role than Richard himself. The flamboyant singer claimed he paved the way for Elvis, provided Mick Jagger with his stage moves and conducted vocal lessons for McCartney.
“I am the architect of rock ‘n’ roll!” Little Richard crowed at the 1988 Grammy Awards as the crowd rose in a standing ovation. “I am the originator!”
Richard Wayne Penniman was born in Macon, Georgia, during the Great Depression, one of 12 children. He was ostracized because he was effeminate and suffered a small deformity: his right leg was shorter than his left.
The family was religious, and Richard sang in local churches with a group called the Tiny Tots. The tug-of-war between his upbringing and rock ‘n’ roll excess tormented Penniman throughout his career.
Penniman was performing with bands by the age of 14, but there were problems at home over his sexual orientation. His father beat the boy and derided him as “half a son.”
Richard left home to join a minstrel show run by a man known as Sugarloaf Sam, occasionally appearing in drag.
In late 1955, Little Richard recorded the bawdy “Tutti Frutti,” with lyrics that were sanitized by a New Orleans songwriter. It went on to sell 1 million records over the next year.
When Little Richard’s hit was banned by many white-owned radio stations, white performers like Pat Boone and Elvis Presley did cover versions that topped the charts.
Little Richard went Hollywood with an appearance in “Don’t Knock the Rock.” But his wild lifestyle remained at odds with his faith, and a conflicted Richard quit the business in 1957 to enroll in a theological school and get married.
Richard remained on the charts when his label released previously recorded material. And he recorded a gospel record, returning to his roots.
A 1962 arrest for a sexual encounter with a man in a bus station restroom led to his divorce and return to performing.
He mounted three tours of England between 1962 and 1964, with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones serving as opening acts. Back in the States, he put together a band that included guitarist Jimi Hendrix — and later fired Hendrix when he was late for a bus.
In 1968, Richard hit Las Vegas and relaunched his career. Within two years, he had another hit single and made the cover of Rolling Stone.
By the mid-1970s, Richard was battling a $1,000-a-day cocaine problem and once again abandoned his musical career. He returned to religion, selling Bibles and renouncing homosexuality. For more than a decade, he vanished.
“If God can save an old homosexual like me, he can save anybody,” Richard said.
But he returned, in 1986, in spectacular fashion. Little Richard was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and appeared in the movie “Down and Out in Beverly Hills.”
A Little Richard song from the soundtrack, “Great Gosh A’Mighty,” even put him back on the charts for the first time in more than 15 years. Little Richard was back to stay, enjoying another dose of celebrity that he fully embraced.
Macon, Georgia, named a street after its favorite son. And Little Richard was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In August 2002, he announced his retirement from live performing. But he continued to appear frequently on television, including a humorous appearance on a 2006 commercial for GEICO insurance.
Richard had hip surgery in November 2009 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, and asked fans at the time to pray for him. He lived in the Nashville area at the time.

Is Too Much Humidity Hurting Your Health?
Tumblr media
You may have read recent research that suggests raising indoor humidity levels may help to deactivate coronavirus particles. During the winter months when our spaces are closed up and heated, humidity levels can drop to extremely low levels (as low as 20 percent). Unfortunately, the COVID-19 virus has been shown to thrive and remain viable for longer periods in these low-humidity conditions.
However, too much indoor humidity can also cause health problems. For example, viruses are known to spread more easily in humidity levels higher than 60 percent. So what is considered high humidity and what are safe indoor humidity levels?
And most importantly, how do indoor humidity levels affect your body and your health?
We’ll share some facts about the adverse effects of too much humidity beyond personal discomfort, as well as common causes of high humidity indoors.
Let’s start with the optimal humidity levels and how much is detrimental to your health and well-being.
How much is too much humidity?
Experts generally agree that the ideal indoor humidity levels for comfort and for avoiding health effects are between 35 and 60 percent. When you’re spending time in a home or workplace with humidity levels in excess of 60 percent, it’s increasingly likely that you will experience certain health issues.
Let’s look at the direct effects on the body from too much humidity. However, it’s even more likely that you’ll experience the indirect effects; so we’ll also explain how humidity alters your environment, and how those effects can be detrimental to your health.
Humidity and health: the direct effects can be deadly
Whether it’s indoors or outdoors, too much humidity combined with high temperatures can cause our bodies to overheat. When that happens, the consequences can be dangerous.
Do you ever wonder why hot, sticky, humid air feels so much more uncomfortable than hot, dry air? It’s because humidity impedes your body’s ability to regulate body temperature and cool down. Too much humidity can actually cause your body temperature to rise.
Here’s how it works in a nutshell. When temperatures get too hot, your body has defense mechanisms that kick in to keep your internal temperature steady. These include:
sweating
increased respiration
altered blood circulation
Sweating is an important one, and is greatly impeded by too much humidity in the air. Sweating cools the body when the moisture evaporates from the skin. However, when the air is already saturated with water vapor (as it is when humidity levels rise to 70 percent and higher), sweat can’t evaporate. So instead of cooling down, you just feel hotter and stickier.
At that point, the body is forced to resort to other means to try to cool off. That’s why you may notice yourself breathing more rapidly as you get increasingly hotter. Your heart pumps more blood to your extremities, and less to your internal organs and your brain. That’s why you feel sluggish and foggy. You may begin feeling light-headed or even faint. You may also feel muscle cramps, especially in your legs.
With the loss of fluids, salt and electrolytes, the body overheats. Eventually, if your body can’t maintain temperature, you can develop heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can be fatal.
What are the indirect effects of too much humidity on your health?
While the direct effects of too much humidity & heat can be dangerous, in most cases you will know you’re in danger and find a way to cool off. However, the indirect effects of high humidity can be more insidious. Humidity can cause changes in your indoor environment that can cause you to become ill.

Bacteria and viruses take hold in humid conditions
Spending time in an environment with too much humidity can actually make you sick, especially from respiratory infections.
The bacteria and viruses that cause illness thrive and grow in air that’s above 60 percent relative humidity.
What’s more, humid air also makes those contaminants stay airborne for a longer period of time before settling onto surfaces. So when you’re in a humid office and people are sneezing and coughing all around you, those nasty germs are sticking around and multiplying. And it’s more likely that you will breathe them in.
Allergens kick into high gear According to a report in Environmental Health Perspectives, published by the National Institute of Health, too much humidity leads to higher levels of dust mites and fungi, two of the worst culprits for indoor allergy sufferers.
Asthma sufferers beware Mold and fungi are known to exacerbate respiratory conditions such as asthma. Even people who don’t normally have allergies or asthma can experience hypersensitivity reactions from fungi that grow in conditions with too much humidity. Most of these microorganisms grow like crazy in relative humidity levels in excess of 75%.
Even if you don’t see them, they can be present in bathrooms, kitchens, carpets and furnishings, and the ceiling tiles in your office. They might even be growing in your air conditioning ductwork.
Humidity increases airborne chemical contaminants Organic contaminants like bacteria, mold and dust mites aren’t the only things that get worse in air with too much humidity. Airborne chemicals that cause adverse physical effects also increase as the humidity goes up.
Everyday building materials like carpet and wood products release chemicals such as formaldehyde into the air. This is called “off gassing.” When there’s too much humidity in the air, the concentration of these noxious chemicals rises due to the reaction of the chemicals with water vapor. Even low-level exposure to those chemicals can make people experience skin, eye and throat irritation as well as respiratory symptoms.
This problem is increasing with the construction of more energy-efficient buildings that may have low fresh air ventilation rates. That’s why it’s so important for modern buildings to maintain proper humidity levels for good indoor air quality.
3 common causes of too much humidity in your space
Now that you know the facts about humidity and health problems, here’s what you need to know about the causes of too much humidity. Then you’ll be equipped to deal with the problem and feel better in your space.
1. Inadequate ventilation A lack of fresh air can increase the levels of both chemical and organic pathogens that cause illness as well as discomfort from humidity. Changes to the HVAC design by a qualified professional, such as adding makeup air or re-routing ductwork, can make a big difference in humidity levels.
Related article: 4 Reasons You Need HVAC Design for Your Air Conditioning Install
2. An oversized air conditioner It’s a more common situation than you might imagine. Building contractors often make the mistake of installing air conditioners that are too powerful for the space. As a result, the unit turns on an off frequently, never running long enough to remove humidity from the air.
Believe it or not, you might need to downgrade your HVAC equipment to control humidity in your space.
Related article: New York HVAC Systems: 8 Reasons Bigger is Not Always Better
3. Neglected AC maintenance When your equipment has been neglected and no longer works efficiently, you can end up with too much humidity in your space. Getting a tune up and a good cleaning can restore it to proper working condition.
Humidity is only one of many problems caused by poor maintenance of your AC equipment. And those problems are costing you in ways you probably don’t even know about. Learn more from this informative guide to Calculating the Hidden Costs of Poor HVAC Maintenance.

COVID-19 & Your HVAC System: Your Questions Answered
Tumblr media
We know you have questions and concerns about the COVID-19 virus and operating/ maintaining your HVAC system. In this article, we’ll share the most accurate and up-to-date information available to help you make decisions.
The fact is, the COVID-19 crisis has developed so quickly that there has not yet been sufficient time for scientific studies to prove definitively whether the virus can be (or is likely to be) transmitted through an HVAC system. Much of the evidence that does exist is based on what is known about similar viruses.
Here’s a summary of what we can tell you with confidence at this time:
Let’s start with the good news: To date there is no conclusive proof that COVID-19 has been transmitted through a ducted HVAC system. The virus is transmitted primarily through direct contact with an infected person and to a lesser extent by touching a contaminated surface.
Experts say that airborne transmission of COVID-19 is theoretically possible, due to the ability of small droplets of virus particles to stay airborne for a period of hours under some conditions. It is presumed that some particles may stay airborne long enough to enter an air distribution system. However, experts believe that the risk of transmission this way is small.
There are mitigation tactics that can help to further reduce the possibility of your HVAC system becoming contaminated with the COVID-19 virus. It’s important to realize that these tactics must be part of a more comprehensive plan that includes preventing the primary means of COVID-19 transmission: person-to-person contact and contact with contaminated surfaces.
None of the mitigation tactics are foolproof. And some have significant disadvantages.
Here are answers to some of the specific questions we are hearing, as well as details about the protocols Arista is following to help keep everyone safe.
Can the virus be transmitted through HVAC ducts?
As we mentioned above, there is no definitive scientific conclusion yet as to the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission through air distribution systems.
That said, there are some potential mitigation strategies that you may be reading about. For example:
Using higher efficiency filters to trap virus particles.
Installing UV light technology or ionization-based air cleaners to destroy virus particles.
Increasing humidity levels to deactivate airborne particles.
Increasing ventilation to dilute virus particles.
Sanitizing air conditioning components before seasonal start up.
We’ll discuss each of these possibilities below.
Should we install higher efficiency filters to prevent spread of the virus?
High efficiency HVAC filters can capture small particles (such as viruses), and remove them from the airflow in your space. That’s why some are considering adding higher efficiency HVAC filters since they may reduce risk of COVID-19 transmission. But they can’t eliminate the risk entirely.
The problem is, the COVID-19 virus is so tiny. It’s possible that some particles may pass through even the highest efficiency filters.
It’s important to consider the operational impacts of using higher efficiency filters to your air conditioning system:
Higher efficiency filters are more dense and don’t allow as much air to penetrate. That leads to decreased air flow through your system. If you were already struggling with a system that wasn’t performing well, it’s likely your system will have even more trouble cooling your space.
Your system will also run longer as it struggles to achieve the set temperature, which uses more electricity and creates wear and tear on fans and other parts.
High efficiency filters trap more dust and debris and must be changed more frequently.
Another possible limitation is the setup of your system: it must be able to accommodate the size of the higher efficiency filters. The filters won’t help without proper installation.
Also, the cost of high efficiency filters can potentially be three times the cost, or more.
According to the National Air Filtration Association (NAFA): “In order for filters to have any impact on infectious disease transmission, transmission has to occur through the airborne route, filters have to be properly installed and maintained in appropriate systems to treat recirculated air, and filters have to be appropriately designed for the building in which they are used. More importantly, in most buildings and in most situations, filters may be considerably less effective than other infection control measures including social distancing, isolation of known cases, and hand-washing.”
Bottom line: if you’re thinking about adding high efficiency filters, call us to discuss your situation.
Does UV technology kill the COVID-19 virus?
UV systems use ultraviolet (UV-C) light to kill and deactivate microbes, including viruses, that may penetrate filters and get into HVAC systems. There are different types, including upper air and surface-cleaning UV disinfection systems.
According to ASHRAE (as reported in ACHRnews): “the germicidal wavelength can kill 90 percent of all microorganisms living on HVAC air ducts and evaporator coils, depending on wavelength intensity and length of exposure.”
However, it’s important to know that although this technology has been shown to be effective in killing other types of coronaviruses, it has not yet been proven to be effective on COVID-19.
Bottom line: You’ll need to weigh the cost of installing HVAC UV products versus the possible benefit, which is not guaranteed.
Should we consider other indoor air cleaning technologies, such as ionizers?
We have had customers ask about installing air cleaning products that use ionized hydrogen peroxide to destroy microbes in the air that passes through a ducted HVAC system. These small units can be placed within your air distribution system just past the filters, to destroy any particles that manage to penetrate your filters.
There is some evidence that ionizers can destroy coronavirus particles, so it may be an option worth considering if your system can accommodate the equipment.
Bottom line: If you’re interested in ionization technology, give us a call to find out if it may offer some benefit for your system.
How do humidity and ventilation affect COVID-19?
Recent research has shown that increasing indoor humidity levels can help to deactivate the virus.
During the winter months when our spaces are closed up and heated, humidity levels tend to drop to extremely low levels (between 20 and 40 percent). Unfortunately, those are the ideal conditions for the COVID-19 virus to thrive and remain viable for longer periods.
According to the research, adding moisture to the air may damage the outer membrane of the virus, and also make “droplets” less likely to linger in the air. Increased humidity has the added benefit of moisturizing our mucous membranes, which increases your body’s ability to fight the virus.
That said, it’s important to avoid adding too much humidity to a space, because that can cause damage to furnishings and finishes (especially woodwork and fine art).
Humidification technology can boost humidity in your space to optimum levels. Be sure to consult with an HVAC expert to determine the optimum level for your space.
ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) also recommends increasing ventilation (adding more outside air) to dilute any particles that may be present. Here in New York City, that’s not always easily done if you can’t just open a window. However, there are HVAC solutions that can add more outside air to your space.
Bottom line: It’s smart to have your indoor air quality evaluated and consider humidification and added ventilation. Arista can help with that.
Should my HVAC equipment be cleaned and sanitized?
Some of our customers are asking us to clean and sanitize system components prior to starting up their air conditioning systems.
We can’t be sure if any COVID-19 particles have remained viable in your system during the lockdown. Yet even beyond eliminating virus particles, there is certainly a benefit to cleaning condenser coils (which is normally done during a PM visit) and possibly your ductwork and other system components. Cleaning your system makes it operate more efficiently, consume less power, and keeps parts in good condition.
If you want additional peace of mind (especially if there have been confirmed cases of the virus in your space), Arista will be offering an HVAC deep clean and sanitization of evaporator coils, ductwork, and other system components where virus particles might be present.
For commercial systems, the ideal time to do this work is BEFORE you bring your employees back to work in your place of business and turn on the air conditioning system. However, you’ll need to make sure access to your space and equipment is available.
Keep in mind that sanitization of system components is a one-time cleaning, and does not provide any long term protection against future exposure to the virus.
Sanitizing your equipment and air distribution system offers reliable benefits. If you’re interested in deep clean and sanitization of evaporator coils and ductwork, ask about that when you request your AC preventative maintenance appointment.
Tumblr media
What health and safety protocols do Arista technicians follow when servicing HVAC and Refrigeration equipment?
Staying home if not feeling well. Arista technicians are very conscientious about protecting the health and safety of our clients, as well as their co-workers. They are urged to stay home when not feeling well. Arista promotes quarantining when determined necessary.
Wearing masks. Arista provides masks to every technician to protect both our clients’ spaces and the well-being of our team.
Wearing protective glasses. Glasses are provided to every Arista technician to both protect our clients space and the well-being of our team
Wearing gloves. Wearing disposable gloves (and changing them between jobs) is an important tactic to reduce contact with the virus on surfaces. The CDC recommends, “Wear disposable gloves when cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. Gloves should be discarded after each cleaning.” After completing each job, Arista technicians are taught to remove their gloves, dispose of them safely, and then wash their hands.
Wearing booties. Every Arista technician is equipped with booties to prevent bringing dirt and debris into our clients’ spaces.
Disinfecting areas in contact with our personnel. After working in your space, Arista technicians clean all surfaces they come into contact with, such as HVAC access and controls, with disinfectant.
Safely disposing of filters. While COVID-19 is smaller than most filters can stop, it makes sense that some virus particles might stick on the fibers as they travel through the filter. Therefore, Arista technicians place used filters in plastic bags and throw them away in your outside trash receptacles.

Scheduling AC Maintenance & Start Up as Buildings Return to “Normal”
Tumblr media
To our valued customers:
First and foremost, we hope you are safe, healthy, and navigating these unprecedented times with a sense of hope and optimism.
We would like to share some important information about startup and maintenance of your HVACR systems, as we approach what we hope will soon be the end of the renewed Executive Order to shelter-in-place.
Why AC maintenance is more important than ever
As businesses begin to return to a “new normal,” preventive maintenance is more critical now than ever before:
Most HVAC equipment has been idle for the better part of the pandemic.
Warm weather is quickly approaching.
There’s scientific uncertainty about the effects of COVID-19 on air distribution systems.
That’s why we want to ensure that we can expeditiously perform your preventive maintenance inspection once the mandate has been lifted. Arista is considered an essential service and is presently available for service during the mandated “pause.”
The process for scheduling your maintenance visit
We anticipate an extremely high demand for our services over a relatively short period of time, as buildings begin to open at the same time when warm weather is upon us.
It would be very helpful if Arista can be one of the first vendors on site prior to your business returning to full staff. This will enable us to respect social distancing protocols, health and safety standards and help ensure that the equipment is operating properly upon the return of your associates. The sooner we can gain access, the better.
To help facilitate a smooth transition, we respectfully ask the following:
Ensure that access to your space is permitted by the building, and that water is available for condenser coil cleaning (if applicable).
Ensure your account is in good standing and all prior invoices are paid to date. We are sensitive that the current reality may impose cash flow issues. Yet in order to maintain the quality and timeliness of our services it is critical that your account is current. If you would like to discuss the financial status of your account, please contact our Assistance Controller, Usha Looknauth, at [email protected]. This will help ensure no delay in service.
Notify us of any particular restrictions or requirements needed to work in your space as a result of COVID-19.
If you are confident that the above conditions are met, please contact Mike Rosone ([email protected]) to request an appointment. PLEASE include your address in your request so we can identify your account.
One of our Maintenance Coordinators will reach out to you directly to schedule a convenient date and time.
We thank you for your continued trust, confidence and loyalty and look forward to our continued positive working relationship.

‘Keep At It’: Signs Of Hope As COVID-19 Cases Level Off
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Spring is officially here – and with it glimmers of hope that the Southland may have seen the worst of the coronavirus pandemic.
Amid an unprecedented public health crisis that saw the United States and governments across the world all but shut down daily life since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic in March, numbers of both new cases and newly reported deaths appeared to be leveling off in parts of Southern California and across the U.S.
In Los Angeles County, officials announced 25 additional deaths and 239 new cases in what marked the lowest one-day increase since March 26.
Another nine new COVID-19 cases and zero new deaths were reported in Orange County Monday.

Those numbers followed an announcement from California Gov. Gavin Newsom along with his counterparts in Oregon and Washington state on a plan to reopen their respective states’ economies, though no firm date was immediately announced.
More details were expected to be revealed Tuesday.
Hints of optimism were even apparent from New York, where Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday he believes “the worst is over” even as the state hit a grim milestone of 10,000 deaths.
U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams also appeared to echo hope for some of the country’s hardest-hit areas.
In the midst of tragedy, there IS hope. CA and WA remain stable in terms of #COVID19 cases, and NY, NJ, & even Detroit & New Orleans appear to be leveling off or

Air Conditioning Replacement: 6 Things to Consider
Tumblr media
Thinking about an air conditioning replacement this summer? Don’t make the mistake of automatically getting a newer version of the air conditioning system you have now. Especially for a commercial air conditioning system, it’s important to consider how your conditions and needs have changed. And other factors that can save you money and ensure long-term satisfaction with your new system.
You might discover that the best choice for you is a system that’s bigger or smaller, or one that uses a new type of HVAC technology.
Here’s what to think about as you begin your search. Be sure to share the relevant information with HVAC contractors you are considering.
6 questions to help you choose the best air conditioning replacement system
1. Has your space been renovated?
Has your space been renovated since your last air conditioning system was installed? Or are you looking for an air conditioning replacement due to a current renovation project?
When you add space, lose space, or re-configure the same space, that affects your air conditioning load requirements. You might need a system with a different cooling capacity (bigger or smaller). If you have a ducted system, you’ll likely need changes to your ductwork design.
Don’t let a building contractor choose your new system based solely on what you have now, because you could wind up very unhappy. If your system’s capacity is too large, it will turn on and off frequently and have trouble removing humidity. If it’s too small, it will run constantly and have trouble cooling the space.
Instead, get an HVAC expert to evaluate your space, determine the correct load requirements, and recommend exactly what you need for your air conditioning replacement system.
2. Has usage of the space changed?
Has your business moved into a new space? Or have you changed how you are using your current space?
Usage of the space has a big impact on your air conditioning needs. For example, opening a restaurant or a pilates studio in what used to be office space increases the need for cooling. There are more people occupying the space, which generates more heat and increases the need for ventilation. Plus, activities like cooking require specialized air conditioning and ventilation systems to remove grease, odors, and heat from cooking appliances.
If the usage of your space has changed since the existing air conditioning system was installed, there’s a good chance you need an air conditioning replacement with some design changes. For example, a restaurant will likely need a makeup air unit in the kitchen. A computer room might need a supplemental ductless mini-split unit to provide extra cooling for heat-producing technology.
If you don’t choose your air conditioning replacement system based on how you’re using the space now, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment and poor comfort.
3. Do you have poor comfort conditions?
Anything that makes your employees and customers uncomfortable is hurting your business. Have you been living with inconsistent temperatures in your space, with some areas too hot while others are too cold? Or excess humidity? What about drafts or loud AC noise?
If so, you definitely need an evaluation of your space, and chances are you need HVAC design changes or a different type of system.
For example, if you have a problem with inconsistent cooling and too much humidity, you might benefit from a VRF HVAC system (new technology that’s designed to better manage these conditions). Or, you might need to add or modify your ductwork.
4. Do you have air quality issues?
Many types of commercial spaces can have compromised air quality that puts occupants at risk. Here are just a few examples: commercial kitchens, manufacturing and industrial facilities, salons and spas, dry cleaners. Even if your business is located near another business that produces VOCs and other pollutants, your ventilation system may be drawing in toxins.
If air quality is a concern for you, you may want to consider HVAC add-ons that can help to improve air quality, such as:
HVAC air filtration systems that are designed to remove contaminants
Air purifiers that use UV light to kill mold, bacteria, and viruses
5. Do you want to reduce energy bills?
It’s no secret that energy expenses are high here in the New York City area. If you’re hoping to reduce those expenses with a newer, more efficient air conditioning replacement system, it’s best to think carefully about the one you choose.
Looking at air conditioner energy-efficiency ratings is a great place to start. But you can do more to get a new system that will save you money.
Consider a VRF system. VRF systems are designed for energy efficiency, because they run at the exact capacity needed for the current conditions. By contrast, most traditional systems only run at one speed: full blast. That’s why they turn on and off frequently and create drafts, not to mention a lot of noise. Plus, VRF systems can provide heating as well as cooling.
Get programmable controls. Depending on the size of your business, you can go with simple, programmable thermostats, or invest in building control systems. Either way, programming those controls to optimal settings based on your business hours and occupancy can significantly reduce your bills.
6. Should you replace heating equipment at the same time?
Some types of heating systems share components with air conditioning systems, such as air handlers, blowers, and ducted distribution systems. In that case, it’s worth considering replacing both heating and air conditioning equipment at the same time.
When systems like heating and air conditioning are designed to work together, you can end up with problems when you replace only part of the system. Mismatched components can cause breakdowns, poor comfort conditions, and higher energy bills.
