Tumblr media
A Pledge to Sovereignty and Security
The UK Minister for Europe, Leo Docherty, embarks on a diplomatic tour to Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, underscoring the UK's steadfast commitment to supporting sovereignty and security in the South Caucasus. The region, grappling with post-conflict recovery and democratic reforms, seeks to fortify ties with the UK to diversify trade and reduce dependence on Russia.   Bridging Diplomacy and Democratic Reform Minister Docherty's visit, his third to the region this year, prioritizes the urgent need for direct peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Addressing security challenges internally and from neighboring nations, he advocates for a long-term settlement for peace and stability, aligning with the democratic reform agendas of Armenia and Georgia.
Strengthening Strategic Dialogues
Building on formal Strategic Dialogues conducted earlier this year, Minister Docherty extends the UK's offer of increased trade and security cooperation. With a focus on reducing European reliance on Russia, the UK aims to fortify the South Caucasus region against external interference, fostering reform, peace, and stability. Ahead of his arrival in Yerevan, Minister Docherty emphasizes the significance of the UK as a reliable partner in the volatile region, ready to support reform initiatives for lasting peace and stability.   Diplomatic Momentum in Yerevan and Tbilisi The diplomatic momentum gains strength as Minister Docherty builds on last week’s UK-Armenia Strategic Dialogue in London. Both sides commit to enhancing cooperation in trade, security, and the rule of law. In Tbilisi, the Minister reaffirms the UK’s unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. The UK collaborates with the Georgian government to bolster resilience against Russian aggression, with a tailored support package agreed upon at the 2022 NATO Summit in Madrid.   Urging Leaders Toward Historic Agreements Amid recent events in Nagorno-Karabakh, Minister Docherty urges the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to engage meaningfully in internationally-mediated negotiations. The goal is to reach a historic agreement, securing a lasting peace for the region. The UK's contributions, including £1 million to the International Committee of the Red Cross and demining support for Azerbaijan, exemplify its commitment to humanitarian aid and security partnerships.
Expanding Partnerships in Baku
Minister Docherty concludes his diplomatic tour in Baku, coinciding with the UK's extension of its partnership with Azerbaijan. This includes specialized courses in explosive ordnance disposal, equipping individuals with the skills needed to operate in a high-threat environment. The collaboration solidifies the UK's role as a supportive ally in the region's pursuit of peace and stability.   Sources: THX News & Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office & Leo Docherty MP.
