Good Night, Friends! Giselle is ready for a cozy snooze in her pile of comfy leaves. Nothing like a cozy pile of freshly raked leaves to catnap in :-) The animal care staff put a lot of effort into raking up leaf piles for the cats to play in. It takes a whole lot longer to rake up those leaves than it takes the cats to scatter them back out. Such a labor of love.

Samira's Story

In May of 2021, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) assisted the U.S. Department of Justice (D.O.J.) in seizing 68 big cats from Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park (known as Tiger King Park) in Oklahoma. TCWR became home to 13 of these animals, including Samira. The previous owners refused to follow multiple court orders to cease breeding and failed to maintain and provide veterinarian records, resulting in a warrant to seize all animals. The animals had lived in debilitating conditions, in 10′ x 20′ metal wire and “shipping containers” with sand or rotting plywood flooring.

All 13 animals were placed in TCWR’s Witness Protection Program, as authorities required us to remain silent about the details to our supporters and the public while this high-profile case was litigated. TCWR created the Witness Protection Fund to help us better prepare and provide financial assistance for these and future animals in dire medical need or immediate housing while their court cases play out. The D.O.J. placed the remaining 55 big cats in reputable sanctuaries accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS).

Soon after her arrival, we gave Samira a complete wellness exam, including preventative vaccinations, birth control, and treatment for intestinal parasites. Samira has a gentle character and has come to love sanctuary life. This social lioness lives alone but enjoys caroling with the other lions throughout the Refuge. She loves to run up and down the fence line with her neighbors and take naps on her platform bench. Samira only plays with her enrichment toys when she thinks no one is watching.
