Canon's strengths in photography include photo printers, not just cameras. The company's new Pixma TS series replaces the MG series, but remains essentially the same – all-in-one inkjet printer (AIO) for the home – and serves the same customer. In this Canon Pixma TS9020 review, we take a look at the flagship model: a six-color multifunction printer that prints, scans, and copies, with the added benefit of producing photo quality of up to 8×10 inches. Since it is intended for home and not for the office, an automatic document feeder (ADF) and a fax are missing. However, these omissions are unlikely to play a major role in the decision to purchase a very good photo printer.

With the TS series, Canon has redesigned the appearance of its consumer inkjet models – less curvy, more box-shaped. However, what we really miss is a useful ADF for scanning or copying multi-page documents. You can find this feature in office models, but not in photo printers like the TS9020.

One thing that we find very cumbersome is the paper cassette: it is located at the bottom of the device – quite often – but in the standard configuration it only accepts paper up to 8×10 in size, which is in the Rule is photo paper, including the new 5 x Canon 5 inch square photo paper. The TS9020 is also compatible with cameras with Wireless PictBridge (many of the new Canon cameras offer this).

Wireless setup is simple and straightforward. Simply go through the prompts to connect the printer to a network that other devices can discover. For an iOS device, the printer is shown as an option if both devices are on the same network.

The TS9020 is designed for printing photos and is a six-color printer that also provides Photo Black and Gray inks in addition to the standard CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). These ink cartridges are available in standard and high capacity versions. Photo Black and Gray inks are used only for printing photos. Of the six inks, five are based on colorants, while Photo Black ink is based on pigments to achieve deeper blacks. The standard capacity color inks cost around $ 13 each (with an average page yield of 350 pages) and $ 16 for Photo Black (300 pages), while the higher capacity inks cost $ 20 for colors (700 pages) and Cost $ 25 for Photo Black (700 page yield). 500 pages yield).

Setup and performance

Setting up the TS9020 is easy. It took approximately 10 minutes including printhead alignment and ink primer initialization. We used the included CD to install printer and scanner drivers and software (you can do a full installation or choose what you want). You can also download the CD from Canon's support website. We chose a wired Ethernet connection because it offers the fastest speed for performance testing (to test the internet-based features, we connected to a Wi-Fi network).

For photography, the improved quality of photo output is one of the main reasons to buy a six-color (or more) printer over the standard four-color CMYK standard. To be honest, four-color output is fine for many users for occasional snapshots.

But the six colors make a subtle difference. If you are really interested in photography, it is worth having it. Visually, the prints we made – a variety with photos and charts – were well saturated with deep black, and the colors were accurate compared to the X-Rite color reference we used. In fact, the quality differences were noticeable, but very subtle when we compared them to prints we made from a calibrated, nine-color Epson SureColor P600.

We are very happy with the printing performance. Canon rates the TS9020 at approximately 15 pages per minute (Canon calls it images per minute) in black and white printing and 10 pages per minute in color. When printing a predominantly monochrome four-page Word document, an output speed of 16 pages per minute was achieved, which dropped to 7.3 pages per minute when printing a predominantly colored Excel document. These documents are part of the ISO Document Suite used by the providers. However, our test log is not that extensive, so our results meet Canon specifications.

The scanner has an optical resolution of 2,400 dpi, which is fine for most applications. We tested it by scanning our image test documents using the Google Picasa (RIP) import function, which recognized the TS9020 as a TWAIN scanner. When printing out the scanned test documents, we found that they came very close to the originals in both detail and color accuracy. If you scan or copy a lot, the flatbed scanner is unfortunately a problem. Don't miss the ADF too much with one or two individual scans

Our opinion

The Canon Pixma TS9020 is a very powerful six-color AIO with good performance and excellent photo output. It also offers excellent connectivity with NFC and wired Ethernet in addition to the ubiquitous USB and Wi-Fi. It has two main disadvantages: the small paper tray with a capacity of 100 sheets is limited if you print frequently and protrudes uncomfortably when using standard letter-size paper. The lack of an ADF and, to a lesser extent, a fax can result in the TS9020 being no longer considered by some users. But we like the large touch LCD panel and the slim look of the device. For the money ($ 200 MSRP, available for $ 150 at the time of writing), the TS9020 is a good value.

Is there a better alternative?

The Expression Photo XP-860 from Epson is a six-color printer. However, with a list price of $ 299 (street price of $ 200), it's more expensive than the TS9020, which makes the Canon a better buy. However, the XP-860 has a 30-page ADF and fax function, which may be more desirable if you need this function like a small office. If you are interested in large photo prints and can do without the multifunction components, you should increase the budget for a printer like the Pixma IP8720 from Canon.

Note that the TS9020 is the flagship and that the TS series has cheaper models in its range, like the TS8020, which has a smaller LCD, but is otherwise the same printer. The TS5020 is the cheapest model at $ 100 (MSRP), but it's a five-ink printer with no touchscreen.

How long it will take?

Canon doesn't release a work cycle for the AIO, but it feels good. With a 100-sheet paper tray, you probably won't have many long print or copy runs – jobs that put a heavy load on a press. With average home use, there is no reason why the TS9020 shouldn't offer you two or three years of service, if not more.

Should you buy it

Yes, for the price you get a high quality photo printer with copy and scan functions. The paper tray has less capacity than we would like, and it is cumbersome, but it is not a breaker – especially if you get very good performance and excellent output quality.

If you print a lot, you may want to reevaluate your requirements. Would an ADF, fax, and a larger paper tray serve you better? In this case, a printer for office productivity may be the better option. If, in addition to these functions, photo quality is also important, a device like the Epson XP-860 is more satisfactory. However, for the majority of home users, we think the TS9020 is a solid purchase.

You’ll need a screen and squeegee to start.

Also, some photo emulsion for screen printing.

Add water to the sensitizer, then mix it with the emulsion.

Mix thoroughly until it’s an even green color.

Pour just a small amount onto the screen.

Use the squeegee to spread it evenly on both sides of the screen.  Try to get even and full coverage by alternating directions and sides.

Dry the emulsion in front of a fan and IN THE DARK.

After it’s dry, quickly lay your artwork, backwards, on the back of the screen.  You can print your art on transparencies at most office supplies stores or copy centers.

Tape the art in place, then lay on a piece of glass to hold it against the screen.

Apply a very bright light for 30-45 minutes.

You can also use sunlight, but the time may vary depending on cloud cover and placement.

The areas covered by your art do not get exposed when you remove the transparency.

Use a light spray and soft toothbrush to wash out the unexposed emulsion.

Be careful not to use too much force when spraying it out or you will remove emulsion around your design as well.

Use painters tape to mask any areas that you don’t want to print yet, or areas where the emulsion isn’t intact.

Layout your shirt on smooth, flat surface and remove wrinkles.

Place your design where you want it to be printed.

Lay a thick bead of ink above the art, extended past both ends. Be sure to add extra ink above large areas to be printed.

Even though I’m working alone here, you’ll have better luck to have someone hold your screen, then use two hands to evenly pull the squeegee fully across your screen.

Remove the screen and wash out all of the ink before it dries.   After the ink dries, run your shirt through a clothes dryer for 5 minutes to heat set the print.

The screens can be reused by cleaning them with emulsion remover.

Spread a small amount across both sides of the screen.

Then use a hose to wash out the emulsion until the screen is clean. Dark inks will stain the material of the screen, but this will not affect future prints. Just make sure to remove all of the emulsion.

Six Color Manual Press – With a six color machine you can print most anything.

Conveyor Dryer – Required for any real production, and air flow is a plus.

Flash Dryer – A must if you’re printing on dark garments. Buy basic. Extra bells and whistles won't matter here. ON and OFF are all the controls you'll need.

Exposure Unit – Pinpoint light source is best, but the sun will work on a budget.

Washout Sink – You can buy something professionally made or improvise.

Power Washer – Used for reclaiming screens for reuse.

Heat Press – Optional but necessary if you plan to do any team printing.

Film Output Device – An Epson inkjet printer and RIP software is the package of choice for creating your film positives. Don't overbuy. Most printers rarely use more than a 13" wide film, so an inexpensive device like the Epson 1430 will do the job.

Retensionable Frames – After use, screen mesh will lose tension. Retensionable Frames allow you to tighten mesh after each use.

Safety Kleen Part Washer – Most larger shops use Safety Kleen part washer tanks to clean their squeegees and spatulas.

Tension Meter – This device when placed on a screen will tell you the tension of that screen, measured in Newtons.

Jacket Hold Down – Jacket printing requires the jacket be held firmly in place during printing with this printer attachment. Also you’ll need a plastisol ink additive such as Union Ink’s Nylobond.

Vacuum Platen – Another printer attachment, the vacuum platen holds flat stock products in place during printing. Required for printing transfers and bumper stickers.
