I can't speak for everyone, but my biggest issues with Robyn is the fact that she doesn't really do what she's supposed to be doing from a writing perspective. She's supposed to be a hero to the people of Mantle and a sort of Robin Hood, but it didn't work because we never see it where it mattered most. In Volume 7.
She's supposed to be a person who Mantle can rely on, but we never see her actually interact with the people of Mantle outside of the election night. We never see her out in the streets talking and helping the people. After the massacre at the pep rally, we never see what she and her team does with the materials they start stealing from Ironwood. It's never used to help rebuild things. As far as we know, she and her team are completely hoarding it.
When it finally comes time to help, while she does take down Tyrian at first, she then jumps at the littlest provocation and helps contribute to the plane crash, completely undoing the good she helped contribute to in a way that almost felt like deliberate self sabotage.
There's also the big inconsistencies with her Semblance. It's supposed to be a lie detector, but when you compare Ironwood's speech to all that came after, it seems like it's either faulty and can be duped (which is an interesting concept the writers would never explore), or it might not even be lie detection and then we have to go and try to figure out what it actually is via headcanons (which feels more in line with what CRWBY does).
Then there's the whole microaggressions issue regarding Marrow, the nickname "Wags", and Robyn kinda talking over him during their conversation about Faunus oppression.
At the end of it all, her issues build her up to be a hypocritical character who doesn't help with anything, and instead causes more problems. Basically, Robyn Hill is a fantastic character in concept, but her implementation in the show makes her frustrating to watch, and that's what makes people dislike her.
An issue a lot of characters in RWBY have.
^^ this is 100% valid and I truly see these criticisms. I'm not gonna defend Robyn all that much because she's nowhere near my favorite character, but I will say we never see what she does with the supplies just as much as we never see what IRONWOOD does with the supplies. Heck, we don't even know what these supplies ARE that can supposedly be used to build Amity as well as fix the wall.
Robyn had every right to want those supplies back because she didn't know why Ironwood was taking them. When she finds out about Amity (via Blake and Yang) she stops stealing the supplies and the next scene we see her in she recognizes Ironwood is doing something for the "greater good" and invites him to open-up to her (loveeee that scene in Episode 9).
In the scene where Ironwood and Robyn deliver the speech, I believe the camera zooms-in on Ironwood when he says Amity is ready to launch so everyone wouldn't see his hand light up red (he was lying as bait to get Watts).
Robyn couldn't do much LEGALLY in Mantle until she was elected, and losing the election gave her the push to become "full-on vigilante". She had every right to steal supplies (to help Mantle) in my eyes just as Ironwood had a right to take them (to lift Amity to help the whole world). Plus, you can't fix a hole in a large wall being surrounded by Atlas cameras in one day.
Again, I don't LOVE Robyn, but I did LIKE her and understand her until the whole Tyrian-plane ride thing. Oh and I absolutely hated the scene in V8 when she told Qrow he was a better Huntsman than Clover because he was the one who "walked away". Completely untrue.
Either way, she deserved better. But I honestly wouldn't mind if we never see her again.

Ooohhh give which fairy tale pair would each of these pairs be:
Stev & Tywin
Robyn & Tywin
Emerald & Aemond
Stev & Corlys
Jace & Lioness
First thoughts !
Jace & Lioness --- they just scream Cinderella and the Prince
Stev & Tywin --- Beauty and the beast with the beauty made of Iron
Robyn & Tywin --- Wolf and Red Riding hood but the wolf is a lion.
Emerald & Aemond --- Peter Pan and Wendy (not 100% sure tho)
Stev & Corlys --- Hook and wendy...because you know, with Hook being a pirate

Children: none
Disabilities: ADHD, maybe Autistic, (undiagnosed), anxiety, depression
Abilities: wish magic (uncontrolled), mother nature magic (uncontrolled), Guardian magic (undiscovered/uncontrolled), Energy Blasts, Conjuration, Phytokinesis, Portal Summoning
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Likes:
Dislikes:
Hobbies:
Home realm: Wish Enchanted Forest
Occupation: unemployed/scavenger (ef), Food Truck (HH), unemployed (Storybrooke)
Background: Alice was raised by her papa (Captain Hook) in a magical tower trapped from the outside world since the day she was born. Around age 10, her papa was taken from her by a curse of the heart meant to separate True Love. They could no longer be near each other and so for the next 6 years, Alice was alone in her tower with only her toys and books as company. Her papa would bring her gifts but they could never be what they once were. At 16, Alice came into her magic inherited by her evil witch mother who had trapped her and cursed her papa. She made a birthday wish to be free of the tower; the same wish she made every year. Only this time, she was freed. From that day on,, Alice had to learn to survive on her own without the magic of her tower and try to find a cure for her papa’s heart so they could once again be together. She can travel the realms freely with her magic opening portals; tho her magic is uncontrolled she never knows where the portals will take her. Most times, she can pick her destination such as Wonderland or Storybrooke or even Wish Enchanted Forest. But there are times she ends up somewhere completely new and exotic.
Headcanons:
*Alice is not an IQ Genius… but she is very intelligent. Alice is an adult with a child’s view of the world. She is intelligent, strong and can fight like a pirate because she has fought in battles before in various realms and was trained magically by Rumpelstiltskin. The little girl routine is an act she prefers because it gives her a chance to be just that… a little girl. She lost that and she’s getting a second chance with family. Alice can fully act like an adult. She can snap her fingers and be 100% an adult if needed. Hardened by the world she grew up in and the things she’s seen and witnessed and the knowledge she has of all the realms has matured Alice greatly. But I’m sure Rogers and Robyn would commit murder if they found out someone caused the change in Alice.
*Alice is also very powerful. She could probably wave her hand and just send her opponent across town in a blink. Or hell just turn them into a tree downtown. She’s half Nymph which means she has those powers, and the extra powers being The Guardian gave her, and whatever Rumpelstiltskin taught her once he gave up his quest to lose the knife. He imparted lots of knowledge on her. But she only uses it when absolutely necessary; the rebellion, to defeat Gothel, if her family is in danger, etc. But Alice wants to be Alice of Wonderland and Other Places. So she only uses her realm hopping ability for good and chooses to act childlike.
*She may or may not realize she helps animals as well when they are in distress and suddenly has a collection of stray animals outside her home.
*If Alice ever poofed, her smoke would be light blue with purple and green swirled in

Rwby Catchup V7E10
Writing this after the fact, so non-chronological order: Weiss mom has a drinking problem, in the same episode that reminds us Qrow is trying to kick the same habit. To indicate exactly how terrible a parent Jaques is, she cries happy tears from hearing her daughter isnt coming back home. Whitley hates his sisters for abandoning him to his father. (great scene, great characterisation. Love it entirely). I dont ship it (yet) or anything, but i do hope they’ll join the same AA group at some point. Imagine the thrill of getting to arrest your own dad. Arthur is still sort of generic, but he’s earned a trait besides Smarm and Science: He’s a half-decent salesperson. Also a bit of a showman with a sense of drama. Innocents are about to freeze, and i’ll admit that i like seeing a businessman turned corrupt politician actually face accountability but i dont know if thats the writing or my frustration with the having access to the internet during the Trump Administration. I hope this’ll be the end of his character, he seems like exactly the type of villain whose presence is better felt in absence. (as in the scar on Weiss’ face is enough presence on its own, we dont actually need his presence that much. I might be wording it badly. Basically im worried they’re gonna stage a breakout scene for him and he’ll overstay his unwelcome as a character.) Neopolitan is back, and she still leaves me feeling as cold about her presence in the narrative as the icecream she is named after, but that’s largely because its hard to characterise a character who does not speak. (but then, her being a one-note character is actually a strength. The same as Wile-E-Coyote being one-note is a good thing). This brings me to a little segment that I call “Richard struggles to figure out what the deal with Emerald & Neo even is”. Today on RSTFOWTDE&NES: I’ll openly but shamefully admit it took me verry long to realise that neo’s semblance was some kind of pseudo-illusion thing? Though at least some have seemed semi-tangible. In my defense her earliest appearances mostly had her use it to vanish into thin air so i thought she was just a teleporter like Ruby. Then when i finally figured out Neo had illusions, i sort of got confused and thought a lot of Emeralds things in the tournament where actually Neo doing that. I guess what im trying to say is its kind of weird for the villains to have 2 different illusion-based characters, and for one of them to have an “only one target at a time” limitation. like thats sort of weird isnt it? I might be misremembering, but did Maid!Neo talk to Weiss? Or was that a different maid who has been stuffed into a closet off-screen so Neo could take her place afterwards? Its sort of unclear to me. Cinder is also here, God i hope she gets a character besides “generic hunger for power” at some point but if there is i havent seen it yet. But its nice to know that Ozpin isnt the only one whose lieutenants can betray them at least, not much to say she’s still spending most of the plot looking ominously. Whitley crying on the stairs, This family needs more hugs and less alcohol. Robyn, you’re nice. I dont know what more to say. You’re the only character in Atlas i would trust to run a popsiclestand, Not a lot of deep going on with her, but Robin Hood parodies live and thrive by virtue of their simplicity. They finally tell James that Salem cant be killed and that they lied about the relic’s number of questions, i’ll admit i only ever understood one of those two lies. (They could’ve just claimed “ozpin told us she cant be killed/do you really believe that if she could be killed Ozpin wouldnt have succeeded a thousand lifetimes ago). Does this mean the tower is cancelled? Is operation “100 Shions at once” finally cancelled? NO because Oscar said to stop keeping Salem a secret, so that plan is still a go apparently. The Penny and Winter Dont Understand Eachother scene was great, and i adored the moment Winter thought “oh shit, did i just pull a robo-racism?”. Verry “Pyrrha accidentally implies Jaune should jump off the roof” energy there.

shame:
lots of ethan in the previously AS IT SHOULD BE!!
ah. mercedes. that means this is when noel’s attacked :(
now it’s ethan’s turn to be dropping stuff
lily says he looks likes he needs some time off and he goes “yeah, kill a patient then go on holiday. lovely.” he sounds so flat :(
zoe tells him he needs to go to the morbidity and mortality meeting about the suicidal guy and he’s like “am i in trouble?” 😥😥 someone give him a hug right. now.
zoe says of course not it’s just death and doughnuts and lily says that no one blames him but he just ignores her and walks off :(((( that’s where you’re wrong lily, clearly one person does blame him (himself)
iain saying if he can’t make dixie laugh by the end of the shift he’ll clean the ambulance in his underwear😭
oop nevermind cal’s still dropping stuff and then checking his hands :(
he’s decided to have the test
“have i ever told you about that mate of mine who gave me his epipen when he was dying? it seemed really important to him at the time that i have it…” 💀💀💀
they have a no hoods policy in the hospital?
ethan hears robyn saying she can’t force a patient to stay and he’s like “if you don’t think a patient should be discharged you can’t just let them go” and she’s like “chill out ethan it was a sprained wrist” 😭 he is not okay
i miss noel
ethan’s got a sandwich and apple juice but he’s just staring off at nothing and cal goes in and starts talking about how the infuser fundraiser has inspired him to do something good for the hospital and asks if he was to hold a blood drive whether he could count on ethan to donate but i don’t think ethan even registers that he’s there let alone that he’s speaking to him😭
cal was seriously planning on holding a whole blood drive under the guise of doing something good for the hospital just to get ethan’s blood so he can get him tested before he even knows about anything😭
i really don’t think that cal seriously considered that ethan might have huntington’s and not him because what exactly was he planning to do with ethan’s results at this point??? it seems to me like he wanted to get ethan tested just in case but hadn’t really thought about the fact that it could come back positive
and i think that’s why so many of us figured that it was going to be ethan who had it because it was being set up as cal thinking he has it and thinking ethan didn’t. like i remember seeing posts on here guessing that it was going to be ethan for this reason
“ethan?” “sorry, what?” “right, what’s wrong?” “you’ve made mistakes before haven’t you?” “uh yeah, many, sometimes twice in one night” “urgh” “sorry, okay, i’m listening” “no, no, forget it” “ethan talk to me! what about the blood drive?!” 😭 oh cal sjskdkfk
iirc there was a post on here probably from around the time this aired actually or even earlier idk where someone pointed out how for some reason we see ethan eating/with food way more than we do any other character and it’s always stuck with me. every time he has food i’m like huh. yeah.
he asks zoe if he can skip death and doughnuts because public speaking isn’t his strong suit😭 he’s just like me fr
in the meeting he explains what happened and then zoe wraps it up and he’s like what that’s it? i let a man die! why are you protecting me?! 😭😭😭
also this reminds me of how he didn’t tell dylan the truth about what really happened on the roof because of his mistake with emma but you know what really annoyed me about the fandom response to that was how many people were agreeing that it just made them even. like obviously i love stevie so i didn’t want her to go but people were seriously acting like him making a mistake was equivalent to her actively going after him???? it was 100% in character for both of them to think that but we aren’t supposed to uncritically agree with what mentally ill fictional characters think about themselves!! not to mention everyone (stevie included) seemed to be forgetting that she made a similarly tragic mistake just a few days earlier
anyways that makes me think maybe i should slot a begin again rewatch in where the flashbacks go in this series. actually on second thoughts that might bring too much attention to the continuity errors (there’s only one place it could go but even there it doesn’t fully make sense) so maybe it’s better not to. idk let’s see how i feel when i get there
there’s a kid who’s dad brought him in but he’s locked himself in the car and they’re trying to get him to come out even getting a police officer involved and ethan comes out and, having seen the kid earlier too, is like he’s still not come out? and goes and shouts at him like “if you don’t come out the police will cut your dad’s car up and they’ll drag you out kicking and screaming like a little baby so we can give you the treatment you need!” and the kid immediately unlocks the car and gets out😭😭
cal’s treating the kid but he won’t let him take a blood test because he’s too afraid of needles and cal’s like i might have a solution!
“dr hardy feels so bad about shouting he’s agreed to take this blood test with you” 💀💀💀
he takes ethan’s blood first and ethan’s like “i didn’t feel a thing, are you sure you’ve done it?” so the kid feels better and lets cal take his blood🥺🥺
of course cal pockets ethan’s blood ready to send off for genetic testing without his knowledge🙄 i guess he’s no longer feeling inspired to do something good for the hospital like a blood drive then?
the dad says to ethan “thank you. i mean it, how many people would give their own blood just to help a kid overcome his fear? you’re a good doctor” 🥺🥺 ethan doesn’t look like he believes him though😢
lmaooo max
AHAHSJKDKFJD iain’s cleaning the ambulance in just an apron and dixie comes in like “i was promised underwear” and he’s like “best i could do i’m afraid” and turns round to show his bare arse as dixie calls in louise, rita, and jack
dixie’s got a letter about her hearing from the complaint jess made, even though she later retracted the complaint
oop big mac tells the police that he fought the attacker off because everyone already assumes he did and he doesn’t want to tell them he hid in the toilet and then he had to go and give mercedes the money she needs so she won’t tell anyone. even though if she did tell them she would go to prison???? i guess she’s just relying on mac being too embarrassed to risk it getting out?
lily’s trying to comfort ethan “bad things happen sometimes so don’t blame yourself” “i suppose it’s easier than facing the truth that, actually, the whole system is broken” she looks at the envelope with mrs beauchamp written on it in his hand “what’s that?” “this place suits some people, but i’m not going to be the doctor who chases targets and then pats himself on the back because, yknow, only one patient died needlessly” “we can’t save everyone, ethan” “no, but i am so fed up with a system that doesn’t even give us a chance. i’m tired, lily. i can’t give any more. so, i quit.” 😥😥

was may being an allusion to maid marian something done intentionally because of your love for robin hood, or was that just a happy coincidence?
Complete coincidence, I actually didn't audition for May until I was asked to by Miles and Kerry.
I had absolutely no intention of auditioning for May because I was at the lowest point in my VO career after suffering years of failures and I was about to give up on my dream of doing VO entirely.
Then May happened and changed my entire life.
It was a happy accident, honestly.
It's also a happy accident that Joanna, Fiona, and Robyn are uh... they're all very much "my types" in many ways.
I'm 100% in love with those three.

RWBYmon: Happy Huntresses
Y’ALL THOUGHT I WASN’T GONNA DO THIS HUH
(Literally no one thought that.)
Here we go.
Robyn:
Ninetales, Fletchinder, shiny Espeon.
I will not be taking constructive criticism.
LISTEN she may or may not ACTUALLY be a fox faunus, that’s really just a headcanon I personally like to play around with, but the fox ALLUSIONS are there. And not just because of the obvious Disney Robin Hood connection. I’ve talked about this at length in the Daemon AU posts so go look at those. She’s getting a damn fox Pokemon.
The Ninetales has actually kinda shitty stats; this was a dirty, hungry Vulpix that Robyn made friends with as a kid, they were not the cream of the crop. They had to fight harder to get where they are.
The Fletchinder is very high-level and could evolve, and probably will someday; they’d both quite like it to be a Talonflame. But Talonflame is big and dangerous-looking and grabs attention. Fletchinder is small and unassuming, kids smile at it, it can get into narrow spaces and go unseen. For now, this is what it needs to be.
Besides. A Talonflame couldn’t sit on Robyn’s shoulder 100% of the time without hurting her. They’ll both miss that, when it evolves.
Shiny Espeon. It’s PSYCHIC it’s GREEN what do you WANT from me.
May:
May is kind of a Water-type girl by accident.
Her “starter,” much like Qrow’s, almost doesn’t....count. It was given to her by her parents as a tenth birthday present when what she’d actually asked for was to be taken to the Pokecenter so she could pick out her own.
Metaphors? in MY Pokemon?
However, unlike Qrow, May and her freaked-out little Eevee bonded almost instantly, primarily over hating her family. It evolved pretty fast, and she instantly taught her new Vaporeon Acid Armor.
Before long, both of them would learn to turn invisible; but like any good trainer, May looked to her Pokemon first.
The Vaporeon was her “starter” but it also wasn’t.
May’s actual first Pokemon was a Magikarp.
She knew it was a terrible idea. She did.
But she couldn’t leave it, okay? She had to do something. There was a Magikarp being mistreated or in danger of being hurt and she just kind of...took it. She hastily made up a cover story about wanting a Gyarados someday for her parents and kind of passed the whole thing off as a joke, haha, yeah you know, my MAGIKARP lol like that’s even a thing but hey, I want to be a Huntsman so, you know, maybe a Gyarados will come in handy...
She never actually intended to evolve it. She just wanted to--help. Her parents getting her an Eevee for her next birthday was portrayed as a sort of...jocular amusement of the “haha look how eager the kid is to start training, here, have a real pokemon”
It takes a long time to evolve.
It comes very close a few times. May basically does the real-life equivalent of frantically mashing the B button to force it to stay a Magikarp because you can’t evolve right now, you can’t fight back for me right now, if you stop being a harmless afterthought they will take you away.
There will come a day when she stops asking her oldest friend to hold back this way, when it will finally be safe for them both to be angry, but--
Not yet. Not yet. Not now. Please, not now.
She repeats this process with a Feebas after leaving Atlas; the Feebas, encouraged by her long-term protective friendship with a Gyarados who clearly loves her more than life itself, risks allowing itself to be caught. This time there’s nothing to hide. The Milotic evolves when it’s ready.
Somewhere in this process, after leaving for Mantle, she picked up another Eevee. She didn’t actually plan to evolve it, at least not for a while, and had vague thoughts of maybe going for something unexpected, to trip up anyone who designed their team to beat a Water-type specialist.
The Eevee evolved on its own damn schedule
May has a Sylveon now because trans rights.
Fiona:
[Fiona voice] Hey, so you know how I’m filled with rage?
Fiona has a pair of extremely high-level Lopunny and The Single Angriest Wooloo On The Face Of The Earth.
The Wooloo is the powerhouse. She’s had that Wooloo her whole damn life and it will bite your face off.
The Lopunny were selected over a pair of female Machamp specifically because Fiona is a bottomless pit of socialist rage, and Buneary upon capture is filled with the boiling hatred of imprisoned gods.
Don’t fight Fiona.
You will lose and it will hurt.
Joanna:
TELL US YOUR SECRETS, WOMAN
Joanna I’m so sorry
Literally I don’t even know where to start, we need v8, I need to know you better--
I think Joanna DOES have a female Machamp. It’s particularly sweet-natured, especially for a fighting type.
I can actually see Joanna having an absolute TANK of a Venusaur. She went with a very common, unexciting, traditional starter--before the Happy Huntresses she didn’t...have much, not just financially but like. In terms of a sense of purpose, of drive. She went with the starter she was offered and that it was a bulbasaur was just a one-in-three chance.
But it’s still HER starter, and she stands by her Pokemon. She put in the work and the time and when they did find their passion and drive they did it together, and now they’re unstoppable.
I’m gonna leave that third slot open for when we know her Semblance.

100 Days of Writing - Day 11
@the-wip-project asked:
How do you create your characters? Do you make a profile of them? Do you know your character before you start writing the story?
Over my years of writing I've found a number of different ways to develop and keep track of my characters as they show themselves. I can't say I have one specific way that works - it's all dependent upon the story, the characters themselves, and their purposes in the story. But there are a few general things I can share. I guess you can say that they fall into a 'profile' for them?
I'm not an artist, so I tend to rely on images I can find online for 'face claims' for characters. If I have a really good idea of what they look like, and most time I do from the beginning, or nearly the beginning, I try to find an image that is as close as possible to represent them. I am a very visual person - I need to see them to be able to write them. So some sort of facial image - a photograph, artwork, etc. - always helps
Many of my notes end up in notebooks - mostly handwritten, though I do use Word and OneNote to help organize different things about my stories, too. I usually go handwritten at first - something as simple as scraps of paper, a stack of post it notes, even an old college notebook that barely has any pages left. If it's a character I know will be a biggie in my story, or my main character, I'll invest in a new/unused notebook for them. Some are fancier than others (depending on my mood and finances at the time), but all contain descriptions of the character, little snippets of dialogue I've thought of for them, notes about their plots, character development exercises so I get a better feel for them, notes about their background/family, ideas for their character development I don't want to forget to put into the story, etc.
I mentioned 'character development exercises' - but that's just a fancy way of saying 'ideas about how they progress from the beginning to the end of the story'. Events in their life. Problems they have. Death, sickness, drama, etc. Interaction with certain characters. Sometimes I start noodling out bits and pieces of their interaction well before I've even got a plot sorted out for them, and I don't want to forget that, so I write it down. Again, in notebooks, or sometimes in Word, because typing happens almost at the speed of thought, right?
So, basically, anything and everything I know about my characters ends up in a 'notebook' or 'document' and 'file' somewhere at some point. It all sounds a lot more organized than it really is, but it helps.
As for knowing a character before I start? Most of the time, I do know them, at least well enough to have a good grasp of how they speak, react in certain situations, etc. That works really well when I get the idea for a character first.
Other times, I start with pretty much a blank page and just write. In these instances, it's the idea of the story that hits me hardest, and I have to start writing it down to see what characters want to get involved. It's more of a challenge, especially for someone like me who is more visual inclined, but it works well enough the few times I've tried it. This is kind of what happened when I started writing my Robyn's Hoode story. I mean, we all know who the major characters are, but it begins with a battle up in Northern England/Southern Scotland involving two minor characters for whom I had a very vague idea - Robin's father, Marian's father - and that's it. By the end of that chapter, I had a much better idea of who they are (even if one doesn't survive).
(example below the cut because this got long)
To the east, lying against one of the outer walls of the castle of Alnwick, Gilbert spotted him. Or, rather, spotted the standard raised above. Several bodies blocked the rest from view, one on bended knee, but all hovered in a semi-circle around what could only be a body. Hugh’s body. Lips tightening into a thin line, Gilbert pressed onward. Refusing to see to it personally would not change the grimness of the outcome, no matter how much he wished it.
Purpose and authority marked every step, and those gathered soon parted, making way for the lord of Loxley. His eyes dropped immediately, and for once in his life, Gilbert cursed himself, wishing he was wrong. Hints of crimson bled through plates of mail on his chest, and dribbled down Hugh's cheek and chin like a burbling babe’s drool. Inevitability and acceptance shone clear in familiar green eyes, and Gilbert knew without a doubt it wasn't meant to be.
Dropping to a knee beside the litter, he reached out a hand, bracing it against Hugh’s shoulder. “You had to go and split our forces,” he murmured with a hint of humor despite the severity of the situation.
Hugh, eyes slowly finding the blue of his friend’s, coughed out a laugh, ignoring the fresh spurt of liquid staining his lips. “You… you know me, my… my lord,” he rasped through labored breaths.
Gilbert’s hand tightened over the armor. “That I do, my friend,” he replied. For years, Gilbert relied on Hugh’s battle savvy tactics when taking to the field. Most times it the outcomes were successful, leaving he and his men relatively unscathed. Hugh was a natural when it came to tactics, and Gilbert could honestly say he had learned quite a bit from him over the years.
“M-my… lord…?”
Hugh’s eyes closed tightly as he struggled to speak. Death was stalking him, and surely wouldn’t be long in arriving. “What is it?”
“Will… Mari…”
Gilbert sighed heavily. Moving his hand from Hugh’s shoulder, he took his friend’s hand in his, squeezing it reassuringly. “Your children will be safe,” he promised without hesitation.
“T-take them?”
Hugh’s eyes opened, finding his, but Gilbert didn't miss the clouds now present. “God and King Henry approving,” he replied, “I will make them my wards. Your lands, your children, your legacy. They will live on. Fear not on that account, my friend.”
Hugh struggled to inhale, what air he could take in rattled alarmingly. His lips moved as he struggled to speak, mostly likely his final words… but nothing save one long, drawn out, exhale of breath escaped.
Gilbert remained as he was for a long, expectant moment, but when Hugh’s chest no longer rose and fell, he understood. “God go with you, my friend,” he murmured, gently settling Hugh’s hand over his chest, the hilt of his sword loosely in his grasp. Rest in peace, my friend, and watch over us who remain.
Pushing himself to his feet, Gilbert searched around the area for Roger. He stood nearby, out of the way of those gathered around Hugh. Nodding to the lad to gain his attention, he walked over to join him. “Help with the arrangements for Sir Hugh's body to be returned to my estates,” he said. Searching the area again, he asked, “Where is my horse?”
“This way, my lord,” Roger replied, guiding him down to the left and in the direction from which they’d come. “My lord…?”
Finding his steed, Gilbert accepted the reins and pulled himself up into the saddle with assistance. Several others, mostly of his retinue of bodyguards headed to assist with Hugh formed up nearby. “I will meet you there, Roger. I have a stop to make on the way home.”
In this instance, the only thing I knew about Gilbert when I started writing was that he is Robert of Loxley's father and that he and Hugh FitzWalter were good friends. Also, that Hugh was one of his knights. For Hugh, I knew even less. Eye color is the only thing that I really got for him - and still have, for that matter, all these years later. However, seeing as Hugh doesn't survive, I felt comfortable enough to at least draft out this chapter.
But, like I said, every story, every character is different. Ideas can be triggered by a picture, a song, a word, a certain piece of food, a scent, a part of a dream - it really doesn't take much with my muses! lol

Like, real talk, Robyn Hill and the Happy Huntresses were objectively “good guys” from the moment we met them. Robyn is literally this show’s Robin Hood, stealing from the rich, giving to the poor, that kind of thing. She was even running for a seat on the Council to do all of this LEGALLY and have an even wider reach.
But at the end of the day she WAS stealing from Ironwood’s forces- a group of people who were worried about an even bigger picture and trying to balance the needs of the world over the needs of the kingdom- and expecting Ironwood to just… forgive all of that immediately? Is ridiculous. Robyn was an existential threat not just to Ironwood’s plans, but to the world, even if she didn’t realize it. Even if she didn’t recognize everything Ironwood was doing was for a good cause. Getting Amity Arena airborn was the most important task they could’ve had at the time, and yes, Robin was helping potentially millions of people by stealing supplies meant for the arena and disseminating them to the masses, but she was also delaying the construction of the world’s one big shot at unity.
This was a real political volume. No one was 100% right this volume and almost no one was 100% wrong either. Between Ironwood, Robyn, Ruby and Ozpin, we had a bunch of viewpoints vying for control and attention. And tbh I absolutely saw this “everyone who supports Ironwood is a bootlicker” “everyone who supports Robyn is a terrorist” “Ruby’s a hypocrite for lying about the lamp while expecting Ozpin and Ironwood to tell the whole truth” schism coming a mile away, because Tumblr sees fucking EVERYTHING in black and white without an ounce of nuance. I’m really just surprised it took this long to develop. All that said, y’all need to consider the motivations of everyone involved and actually think how YOU in that position would handle the situation, because I promise a lot of y’all wouldn’t have handled it as gracefully as the characters who were in it.
Ruby’s arriving to Atlas after the government cut themselves off from the rest of the world for damn near a year- the fall of Beacon was >8 months ago at the very least because that’s just the time-skip between RNJR leaving Ruby’s house as arriving at Mistral. The first thing she sees is the beginnings of a fascist regime, Ironwood on a big screen talking about safety and security, right before being arrested by the Ace Ops and delivered to Ironwood. Ironwood then fills her in on his plan with literally zero chance to digest what’s going on or really decide a course of action, suddenly revealing that he- as well as Winter and Penny- know about everything Jinn’s JUST filled them in on regarding Ozpin’s past, and now he wants to just tell the world, knowing that it’ll lead to riots and Grimm attacks. Ruby telling Ironwood that the lamp had one last question- one last piece of absolute and invaluable knowledge- probably could’ve given Ironwood an idea for something that would’ve made an already terribly impossible situation worse. Are we REALLY faulting Ruby- an 18 year old kid carrying the weight of the world and the fate of humanity on her shoulders- for being hesitant with trusting Ironwood with this kind of information? That’s honestly ridiculous
Ironwood’s a man who’s known some large fraction of the truth for possibly DECADES now. He was one of Ozpin’s closest allies along with Lionheart, Glynda, Qrow and Raven. He’s a politician, a headmaster, and a general. And ever since Ozpin died during the fall he’s practically been flying blind, forced to do what’s absolutely best for Atlas and Mantle- as part of his job!- as well as juggling the existential threat of Salem in mostly secret. And his plan made sense! Recall military forces to Mantle right before launching Amity Arena and telling the kingdom all about Salem- forcing the kingdom to come to terms with the threat it was facing. Grimm- attracted to negative emotions, would obviously come in full force, worse than they did during the Fall- but the military would already be there to help keep casualties to an absolute minimum all while the emotions of the citizens sorted itself out. As the leading power, Ironwood would then tell every other kingdom in turn, and provide military support to deal with the riots and Grimm attacks, until the whole world was unified against Salem. Is that not what we want!? Do we not want a unified front against the ultimate evil who’s been trying to assemble 4 artifacts that would call two ultra-omnipotent beings to Remnant that would potentially destroy all of humanity? Say what you will about fascism and authoritarianism and such- all of which are valid criticisms of Ironwood and his regime- but at the end of the day, Ironwood was literally trying to unite the humanity against its #1 threat. That should be everyone’s priority in this war
Robyn- someone who knew NONE of this- saw the beginnings of a totalitarian regime and was trying to fight it! That’s inherently good! No one should like totalitarianism, no one should even play with the idea of fascism. Robyn saw Ironwood using his reach and influence to neglect thousands if not millions of people, and fought to secure resources that were being diverted to a project she had no idea about and delivered those resources to the people who needed them. Robyn saw injustice and fought to right it. She’s an inherently good character doing an inherently good thing, who, through her ignorance of an even greater threat, was delaying something that would unite the world against an existential threat. Robyn. Didn’t. Know. And she had no reason to know or be let in on that classified information. She was a civilian. She held no Council seat, no influence, nothing. And was actively antagonizing Ironwood. He was absolutely right to try and arrest her, while she was absolutely right for trying to steal the supplies in the first place.
No one was wrong in this situation. That’s why this was my favorite volume. Everyone was just trying to do their best with the information they had at the time. But people trying so hard to paint any one side as wrong or hypocritical or antagonistic? They’re the silly ones in all of this.

BEST MOVIE MOMENTS OF 2020
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Abe Makes Dinner from ABE
Teen chef protégé Abe (Stranger Thing’s Noah Schnapp) hopes that his dinner blending Israeli and Palestinian dishes will mend a bridge between his Israeli and Palestinian families (as well as his atheist father). But he gets a sad dose of reality when he learns the hard way that a wedge between families can’t always be solved with a meal.
“Wait for It” from HAMILTON
On June 16, 2016, Leslie Odom Jr. surprised many by beating Hamilton star/creator Lin-Manuel Miranda for the Best Actor award at the Tony Awards. And now they understood why thanks to Disney+ presenting the musical. And it all has to do with the song “Wait for It.”
In this soulful musical number, Odom Jr. allows us to understand Aaron Burr’s beliefs in letting fate leads his path. Whether it’s winning the heart of a married woman or watching all his loved ones parish, Burr is willing to wait for destiny to reveal why. It also showcases the contrast between Burr and Hamilton. This song changes Burr from History’s villain to a complicated anti-hero.
10) Deku and Bakugo go full Super Sayan in MY HERO ACADEMIA: HEROES RISING
My Hero Academia always delivers great action scenes and they truly shine in their latest round in the cinema.
In his final battle to protect young brother and sister Mahoro (Tomoyo Kurosawa in Japanese, Dani Chambers in English) and Katsuma (Yuka Terasaki in Japanese, Maxey Whitehead in English) from ruthless power-stealer Nine (Yoshio Inoue in Japanese, Johnny Yong Bosch in English), underdog hero-in-training Izuku “Deku” Midoriya (Daiki Yamashita in Japanese, Justin Briner in English) transfers his “One-For-All” power to hotheaded classmate Bakugo (Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese, Clifford Chapin in English). The result is an image of the in super powered form resembling Super Sayans.
When Deku reaches 100% power, the film suddenly turns white then stretches into abstract imagery.
Honestly, the main reason I put this on the list is because it’s pure awesome and I’m not afraid to admit it.
9) A Survivor Model from COLLECTIVE
This documentary follows the reporters of Romanian Newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor as their investigation into the Colective Club fire in Bucharest that killed 27 people and left 180 injured exposed vast health care fraud that caused survivors to die in the hospital and would bring down the government. Another key focus is a survivor who was so badly burned she lost most of her fingers. The camera focuses on her as she watches conferences about the fire.
In a standout moment, she models for photo shoots. In this moment, we see a beautiful woman who refuses to allow her disability to stop her, revealing her power.
8) the Wuhan Flu Song from BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM
Many best scenes of 2020 will focus on the bed scene with Tutar and Rudy Gulianni. But I prefer to focus on the scene where Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) performs the “Wuhan Flu Song” at a Anti-Masker Rally. Not only is it deliciously cringy and hilarious, but It perfectly captures all of Cohen’s strengths as a comedic performer.
As with Borat’s previous cringy yet catchy “Throw the Jew Down the Well, Cohen uses the Borat persona exposes the ugliest side of America. Watching the Qanon conspiracy theorists cheering on Borat (under the guise of Country Steve) singing about injecting Obama with the Coronavirus horrifies while splitting sides. This moment reveals the dangerous consequences of misinformation and conspiracy theorists on society. Plus, the song is shamelessly catchy as hell.
Add the fact that Cohen was nearly attacked during this scene shows how far he’s willing to go to make a point and get a laugh.
7) The Dinner Scene from LET HIM GO
This scene is a perfect example of how you put subtext in a scene. On the surface, It’s just Weboy matriarch Blanche (Lesley Manville) serving porkchops to her daughter in law Lorna’s(Kayli Carter) former parent in laws Margaret (Diane Lane) and George Blackledge (Kevin Costner). But with the context of Margaret and George trying to deliver Lorna and their grandson from her abusive husband, you can feel the hostility in the atmosphere.
It’s a credit to the actors and their ability to hide their aggression under a mask of southern hospitality. It’s especially true for Manville, who brings to life a woman who is a master of hiding her cruelty under a pleasant smile. She may sound welcoming to them, but you can tell something’s off about her. No wonder she’s able to manipulate the police into siding with her. Hell, many audience will be surprised when they find out she’s British in real life.
Lane matches her every step of the way with the most nuanced jabs.
It won’t get as much appreciation due to it’s unassuming nature. But it’s a perfect scene to show how to bring nuance to a performance.
6) The Restaurant Scene from THE INVISIBLE MAN
At first, it seemed Cecilia (Elizabeth Moss) finally has the drop on her sociopathic control freak ex Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). After days being tormented by him, Cecilia finally has proof of how he turns invisible. Now she goes to a public restaurant to convince her sister Emily (Harriet Dyer). But then a levitating knife appears out of nowhere and slits Emily’s throat before flying into Cecilia’s hands.
Director Leigh Whannell and cinematographer Stefan Duscio do an excellent job using everyday envirnoments to create a sense of unease. Whenever the camera lingers on a kitchen, you search with anxious eyes for any sign of Adrian. In this case, they use the ambience of a crowded fancy restaurant to create a false sense of security. And yet, you can’t help but wonder if Adrian’s still watching them.
It’s in this scene where title character goes from a good villain to a great villain. Here we see what a cunning monster he truly is. The scene also showcases Moss’s terrific performance as her desperate eyes showcase the complete helplessness she feels in this scenario.
5) Edna sheds her skin in RELIC
Rarely do the words “horror” and “heartbreaking” go together, but that describes the ending to this underrated gem.
Kay (Emily Mortimer) returns to her family home to care for her mother Edna (Robyn Nevin), who seems to be suffering from dementia. Now she and her daughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) find themselves trapped in the crawlspace while fleeing a warped Edna, who has been warped by a supernatural force. With contorted joints and decaying flesh, she has become monstrous. At first it seems they have defeated Edna and are heading out the door.
Then Kay looks back to see her mother lying on the ground, struggling to breath. This brings the film into a unexpected turn as Kay carries the creature that used to be her mother to bed. When Kay peels the skin off Edna’s body to reveal a charcoal skinned, dying creature, the film goes from creepy to heartbreaing. Anyone who ever lost a loved one to dementia will recognize to devastating feeling of watching them fade away right in front of your eyes.
4) The one-take action scene in EXTRACTION
Well, we can’t have a best movie moments of 2020 list without mentioning the 10 minute action sequence from Extraction.
As black market mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) shields the kidnapped son of a drug lord from other mercenaries, his race across a Bangladesh village delivers all you want from an action movie. Fast paced car chase? Check. Semi-automatic gun battles? Check. Hand to hand combat? Check. Parkour across rooftops? You bet. Sometimes you’ll even get people get hit by cars during hand to hand combat. All of this happens while cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel makes it look like one take.
Sure, sophisticated viewers will recognize there the cuts are hidden. But when director Sam Hargrave is willing to ride on the hood of a car as it races across dirt roads for the sake of a shot, you can’t help but be impressed
3) Opening Bike Ride from THE CLIMB
The film begins with what sees like a regular bike ride. American Mike (Director and Co-Writer Michael Angelo Covino) and Kyle (Co-Writer Kyle Marvin) are racing across the road of a French mountain before Kyle’s wedding. But then Mike reveals he’s slept with Kyle’s fiancé, resulting in the furious Kyle to chase Mike. Unfortunately, they’re both too exhausted to commit to a long chase.
The whole opening sequence could be its own short film. Covino and cinematographer Zach Kuperstein) shoot it all in one unbroken take, allowing the awkward exchange to flow more naturally. It leads to a hilarious moment when Kyle tries to chase Mike, but neither have the energy to keep going. Plus, it summarizes the reoccuring cycle of the film with Mike becoming increasingly self-destructive and a terrible friend and Kyle being nice until pushed too far.
2) The Ending from UNCUT GEMS
After spending two hours in a state of panic, it looks like the audience will finally breath a sigh of relief. After locking his pissed off brother in law Arlo (Eric Bogosian) and his goons Phil (Keith William Richards) and Nico (Tommy Kominik) in the Jewelry store with him, smooth talking jeweler and gambling addict Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) makes the biggest win of his life via pinpoint accurate predictions of a basketball game. Now he has millions of dollars; way more than enough to pay off his debt. Everything’s coming up Howard. That is until the furious Phil puts a bullet in Howard’s head and proceeds to rob his store.
With all his reckless behaviour (including putting his girlfriend at risk) and overconfidence, you knew at somehow Howard was going to be punished. But when the flilm cuts to scenes of Howard’s family celebrating the game and his girlfriend leaves with the money, you can’t help but know how bad they’re going to feel when they find Howard dead.
Then the camera zooms into Howard’s bullet wound to reveal the same colourful kaliedescope imagery as shown within the title uncut gems. With Daniel Lopatin’s enchanting new wave score playing, this moment gives the audience a moment to finally relax before closing with Gigi D’Agostino’s L’amour Toujours.
In spite of (or because of) his flaws; Howard is himself an uncut gem.
1) The little things inspire Joe from SOUL
Everyone recognizes “The Pixar Moment”; that scene that elevates a Pixar film from great to extraordinary. No one can truly define it, but it’s the one scene from the film everyone talks about. It’s the ten-minute prologue from Up. It’s Anton Ego’s reaction after trying Remy’s dish in Ratatouille. Even a lesser Pixar film can have this moment; a perfect example is when Lighting McQueen allows Ramirez to race in his place in Cars 3. Now we can add another film to the list thanks to Pixar’s latest masterpiece Soul.
After a day of escaping the afterlife and being trapped in the body of a therapy cat, Joe Gardner’s (Jamie Foxx) has finally achieved his dream of being in a Jazz band. And he feels…nothing. So, he heads back to his piano to ponder his direction in life. Then he finds the items 22 (Tina Fey) collected while in his body. What results is a moment fans will be coming back to in their moment of need.
As Joe rests 22’s items in front of his piano and starts playing, he comes to realize how a pizza crust and a seed truly meant to her. In the process, he comes realize the moments that seemed meaningless at first had some magic in them. The joy of playing for his father. The feel of the ocean waves flowing on his feet. The taste of a café’s pie.
In a time when many people can’t do any major activities, this moment serves as a reminder of to appreciate the little things in life. I imagine many audiences will return to this scene in their lowest moments.

Your Robyn analysis post is great. I wonder if you make the assumption she's supposed to be a 'good' character though. In vol. 7 she's the Roman of the arc. Steals prolifically, smarmy, never shown helping Mantle, always acting out of her own arrogance/rage/self-interest never others' interests, going to one of Ironwood's jail cells...even sometimes almost trying to antagonize Clover/Marrow into arresting her. A Trumpian rage-based candidate. Your fixes only work if she's meant to be 'good'.
I am 100% sure that the writers wanted Robyn as a good guy. Like I said in that post she is meant to represent Robin Hood. She breaks the law in order to help the downtrodden. The thing is that we see her break the law...but we NEVER see her helping the downtrodden. We’re just supposed to take everyone’s word that she’s helping. Which is not how that is supposed to go. The fact that you even asked me this question shows that the writers failed miserably at something so basic. Show, Don’t Tell.
