Joy of Giving: How This NGO in Mumbai Turns Small Acts of Kindness into Big Waves of Change

Small acts of kindness create a ripple effect that inspires others to do the same, and eventually a big wave of change comes about. The Debabrata Auro Foundation (DAF) exemplifies this truth every day through its heartfelt initiatives, such as distributing books to children, providing meals to daily wage workers, empowering widows with livelihood tools, conducting free mega medical events, and awareness campaigns and so much more. Bringing joy to young learners

DAF believes that access to basic and good education is the game changer for holistic development. In the years 2023 and 2024, DAF organized several book donation drives across Mumbai:

Book Distribution at Bhandup MVR MPS School

A distribution drive was conducted for young students. 61 nursery rhyme books were given to the students, spreading the joy of early learning. For many of these children this gift was the first experience of owning a brand-new book. This event started a trigger of endless possibilities for children by triggering their imaginations.

Book Drive at Prajapur Pada Anganwadi, Aarey Colony

This drive was organized on December 8, 2023. Anganwadi children were gifted 33 all-in-one rhyme books in the area. The event was sweetened with the distribution of sweet treats (healthy biscuits) to the children. As a top NGO in India, DAF initiated this mission to give a boost to educational development for the young preschoolers in one of Mumbai’s most underprovided areas.

Nourishment of body and soul: Aahar initiative

The Joy of Giving Project, the Aadhar Initiative, was an event held on August 26, 2024, at Shree Manav Seva Sangh Children’s Home in Sion West with the aim to provide healthy nutrition to children in the area. The event touched the lives of 125 orphaned children. The Aahar initiative is not just a physical meal but a means to share emotional nourishment for all.

A healthy and wholesome meal of dal, rice, vegetables, and chappati.

Basic stationary kits containing pencils, sharpeners, scales, and erasers

Cupcake dessert to sweeten the day

This initiative is a testimony to DAF’s commitment to holistic child welfare and continuous efforts to meet the educational and nutritional needs of the young minds in the country.

Empowering women through livelihood support

Sewing Machine Donation to Mrs. Sabita Lodh, December 5, 2023

In collaboration with the Jai Hind College Rotaract Club, DAF donated a sewing machine to Mrs Sabita Lodh. Mrs Lodh was struggling to support her family of two daughters after the untimely demise of her husband. She could not leave home to work outside because of responsibilities and restrictions; this sewing machine gave her a lifeline to earn a respectable living.

The girls were given toys, bringing in a small moment of joy in this difficult phase of life and letting them know that they are not alone. This gesture helped Sabita gain confidence in earning a livelihood and restored hope to the family.

Clothing with compassion

Maxi Gown Drives, January 1, 2024

DAF partnered with Gurukripa Vikas Sanstha and Beghar Niwas Sanstha in Dombivli to conduct the maxi gown distribution drive for women in need. The maxi gowns were collected, sorted, and distributed by the DAF volunteers. The event fostered community engagement and empowerment as the volunteers interacted with the destitute women, making them feel seen and supported.

The elderly residents of the old age home response to the warmth and companionship by the DAF volunteers was heartwarming.

Reaching out in Time of Crisis

During the lockdown in COVID-19, DAF stepped in to help the daily wage workers, who were left without jobs or food, and served over 400 cooked meals daily. The wholesome plate contained chapatis, chana, and vegetable curries. This was their small part in helping the workers through the tough times, reflecting DAF’s agility and dedication in responding to humanitarian needs.

Rotary Foundation India: Transforming Contributions into Sustainable Impact

The Rotary Foundation (India) serves as the Indian arm of Rotary International's philanthropic endeavours, channelling resources into impactful service projects that address pressing societal challenges. Established on February 22, 1988, under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, RF(I) is recognised by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and offers tax exemptions under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act, facilitating contributions from individuals and corporations alike.​

Operational Models

RF(I) operates through two primary models to implement its initiatives:​

1. Global Grants

Funded by philanthropic donations, Global Grants support large-scale projects with sustainable and measurable outcomes in Rotary’s focus areas. Since its inception in India, RF(I) has completed over 3,375 projects, amounting to approximately $1.48 billion USD, across all areas of focus.​

2. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Grants

Disease Prevention and Treatment

The Rotary Club of Gurgaon launched a Mobile Mammography Van in 2016, equipped with a mammography unit, PAP smear chamber, and X-ray unit. This initiative provides free breast cancer screenings to underprivileged women, charging a nominal fee per camp to sustain operations. Initially covering Delhi-NCR and nearby areas, the van was grounded in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 lockdown but plans to resume service soon.​

Environmental Sustainability

In collaboration with the Chirag Rural Development Foundation, the Rotary Club of Bombay completed an integrated village development project in Vanvasi village, Jawahar taluka, Maharashtra. The project includes the installation of submersible solar pumps for drinking water and irrigation, benefiting 120 homes and 20 acres of farmland, respectively. Additionally, solar lamps were provided to offer backup lighting during monsoon power outages.

I am generally opposed to gen AI, but that last para made me think. I was accused of "trying to boast" because I apparently used english words beyond my level (as a second language speaker) in grade 8.

At the university rotaract club, I was presented an award at a mock-award thing (good natured ribbing, that's all) for typing weirdly in chats. I genuinely wonder if someone who claims to be able to detect chatgpt writing, or one of those AI detectors would flag my writing as bot-like.

the reason i'm generally opposed to policies that blanket ban ai is less out of ideology and more out of practicality. i obviously respect any given organization's ability to set its own rules - this is fine - but saying "no gen ai" just keeps out honest people, not liars

if you want me to not submit generative artworks to your magazine or art show, that's fine, i won't because i value honesty in how i make things. but there's really no practical, functional way to deter a liar who will just say "it's real", not without sky-high false positives

this is even worse for writing than it is for images. at least images have metadata, and stripping/altering metadata is a slightly more involved process than just copy-paste. in writing the only ai detection is based on totally subjective criteria of quality

i know this is going to sound silly, and i'm not going to say you're ableist or xenophobic for not liking ai writing, but i've met and am friends with people who are autistic and who are ESL who *genuinely do just write like that*. and it's a real problem for autistic students!

Tree plantation drive highlights, Mumbai

DAF’s green initiative is known for combating environmental degradation and urban heat effects. Here’s a look at some of the impactful plantation drives:

Aarey colony, Goregaon 16/12/2003

Largescale tree plantation and sapling maintenance program was launched in “green lungs of Mumbai”, Aarey. This event was undertaken with collaboration with local communities and concerned officials.

A total of 28 trees were planted, which included a diverse range of species, namely,  6 Tulsi, 5 Guava, 5 Custard Apple, 2 Neem, 2 Kadipatta plants, 5 Cherry, 2 Kokam, and 1 Gooseberry plant to add to the biodiversity in the area.

The plantation locations were carefully picked for their environmental impact and contribution to the beautification of the landscape in Aarey colony

Green Aarey: Sowing the seeds of sustainability 5/01/2024

This drive was held in Aarey Colony Forest. 30 NSS volunteers from Shri MMP Shah College and 10 volunteers from Rotaract Club of Jai Hind College joined DAF in the plantation and environmental awareness drive. This practice fostered a sense of ownership and environmental stewardship in the volunteers as well as the community and promoting a healthier ecosystem.

Aarey forest Mumbai, 12/08/2024

This drive was a part of the ongoing CSR initiatives by DAF. Total 30 saplings were planted at well-planned locations so that the local community could also be involved in maintaining and nurturing the saplings.

Each of DAF’s efforts is a leap towards a cooler, greener, and healthier Mumbai and reflects why this foundation is hailed as the top NGO in Mumbai 2025.
