I was clearing out my phone photo album for the new year and realized I have way too many screenshots of queer Dani stuff, so let's talk about it.
Danielle Moonstar and Rahne Sinclair are a duo who stand out to me, even among all the many "this is clearly meant to be gay" characters and pairings that populate the X-Men, because of how explicit it is? They are not the only Claremont women to call each other their "soul mate" or "soul-mate," but they are the ones still doing it into the modern day.
Tumblr media
They have a psychic rapport with each other which is constantly used to advance the plot. The fact they specifically can find each other is important to their stories... Here, you can even see Warlock pondering the nature of their relationship, though whether he is speculating on them being gay "I know what you are"-style or still learning about the concept of love in general is up to interpretation.
Tumblr media
They smooch! They hug! They cuddle!
Tumblr media
They go on date-like activities together! Dani won her a teddy bear!
Tumblr media
I feel like you could have them be a queerplatonic thing and/or a romantic gay gay homosexual gay thing - either works - but it feels kind of silly to me that we've hit 2024 and these two are still not officially life partners in some form...
... though I do feel like there's a third person worth mentioning here too.
Tumblr media
When Kate Pryde ran out on Xuân Cao Mạnh, doing her signature move of "abandoning a Sapphic relationship right when it gets serious," Danielle Moonstar was the one who showed up to replace her... Literally. Xuân Cao Mạnh was getting her college diploma and Dani literally showed up to take her seat at her graduation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dani brings Xuân back to Xaiver's Academy, with her becoming one of the main teachers at the academy for that era. Rahne, at this point, was busy going through a "What if this Good Christian Girl... went BAD?!?!?" phase and the less spoken about that the better, but Xuân and Dani got to be the main duo for a bit.
Xuân was already an out lesbian by now, so there's a weird subplot where Dani meets a lesbian barista and tries to set Xuân up with her in a "I know two lesbians, therefore they should kiss" way.
Tumblr media
It's weird, but feels relatively realistic as something for a closeted queer girl to do to her openly-gay BFF in the early 2000s... also the fact that Dani claims to be straight to Prodigy, bisexual icon who knows everyone's sexuality because of his superpowers, is very funny to me.
Xuân and Rahne don't really have much going on between each other specifically, but you can take this panel from the first issue of New Mutants out-of-context and make it look like they do... Like, this is gay werewolf culture in a way, right?
Tumblr media
It also probably merits mentioning that, in the modern era again now, the Infinity Comic Karma in Love had a fake-out where Xuân thought that Dani was hooking up with her girlfriend, Ellie Diwa AKA Galura...
Tumblr media
And in the latest New Mutant series, Karma, Galura, Dani, and Rahne are the leaders and have big dad energy... all four of them are the dads. I stand by this characterization.
Tumblr media
ANYWAY. Point being. Dani and Rahne should be able to kiss on-panel on the lips by now and maybe Xuân and Elle can join from time to time too... They're cute. They're fun. They were explicitly gay in the movie. This one feels really overdue.

ALSO. the question of how masculine/queer women are seen on asgard is also a very interesting one, and one where i haven't been able to find much historical information to draw on so far...
first of all, we have the fact that "argr" does not precisely mean queer - it means "excessively feminine", including/especially "having excessive feminine lusts". so for men it means gay, but for women it means slut. i haven't come across any word meaning sapphic yet.
re: general attitudes: i've seen some sources argue that masculinity in women was mainly seen as good, but like... as someone acutely aware of the discrepancies between how people tend to *think* butches, trans men, etc are treated today and how they/we actually are... i do have my doubts lmao. in general, if you're claiming gender nonconformity is seen as good as a rule, you need some incredibly compelling evidence, because... if it's seen as good, why is it not the standard?
but also, masculine women in MCU asgard specifically are a really interesting phenomenon, because warfare is gendered as male, but they've always had female warriors, whether lone ones like sif or a force like the valkyries.
i think it's probably a kind of mirror of loki's magic situation - accepted (sometimes mandated!) because it's practically useful, but also really fraught with anxiety about going too far. "we need you to break gender norms, but we're still willing to punish you for it, so tread carefully and keep your mouth shut."
i can see the valkyries in particular as being subject to strict, nun-like rules to preserve their perceived femininity (maybe celibacy, but also maybe not, idk) - and i can also see the decision not to rebuild the valkyries after their massacre being framed as "progress". now that we've won and achieved peace, we're more advanced and we don't have to *resort* to making our poor, delicate women to fight any more! they can return home safe to the kitchen!
which would make sif's position really interesting - because, like thor and loki, she's harking back to a golden age... but at the same time, she's apparently trying to roll back "progress" and "civilisation" for her own pride.
and it's also interesting for hela, as a female heir, and as a female warrior who, afair, is apparently not a valkyrie (so perhaps operating on different rules)... and while sif had to fight to be allowed to be a warrior, hela was literally required.
hmm. hmmmmm

Figure It Out
for day two of @carry-on-sapphic-week, today's prompts were sweet and adopt!
read on ao3 or below the cut!
"Trixie…” Keris is using her grown-up voice, a term she hates, but there’s really no other way to describe it. Arms crossed, feet planted, and her tone reminds me of my mum when I figured out a spell to stick my little brothers to the ceiling.
“What’s up?” I respond, choosing to keep my tone casual as I toss my keys into the bowl beside the door and toe out of my shoes.
“That had better not be a cat carrier. I expressly told you we cannot get a cat.”
Well, she’s got me there.
“The landlord never has to know."
“He will know.”
“We could pay him off?"
“Trixie.” Grown-up voice again.
The carrier is getting really heavy, so I put it down on the table. A little soot-coloured paw peeks out between the bars, then retreats and is replaced by a whiskery nose. Keris puts her head in her hands.
“Are you really mad at me?” I ask nervously. “Cos I can return her if you-”
“I’m more mad about how cute she is.” Keris mumbles. She looks up and glares at the carrier. “You’re making this really difficult, you know.” A soft meow in response makes her groan.
I cringe at what I’m about to say next, allergic to sincerity but feeling like it’s needed right now. “I thought, you know… this would be the first step to us having a family.”
Keris softens, stepping forward and pulling me into a warm kiss.
“That’s very sweet of you,” she says, pulling back but keeping her hands cupping my face. I instinctively wrap my arms around her waist, pulling her closer as she continues, “and I do really want a cat, but it doesn’t fix the landlord situation.”
“We could always spell him into agreeing to make an exception?” I suggest.
“That’s highly immoral, Trix.” Keris chides.
“So is the landlord.” I shrug. “I mean, look at our rent! And the mould.”
Keris wrinkles her nose at that. The mould in the upstairs bathroom seems somehow magic-resistant, and the landlord is still refusing to fix it, instead just telling us to keep the windows open. In January.
“One bad act doesn’t cancel out the other.” She counterpoints. “Also, I think it’s illegal.” I groan, then relent.
“Okay. So no cats allowed, the landlord won’t get rid of the mould, and the rent is ridiculous anyway… I’m hearing we need to move.”
“Easier said than done.” Keris says, opening up the cat carrier and picking up the kitten, a small grey sphynx cat. She rubs between her ears and she starts to purr.
“Eh, we’ll figure it out.” I shrug. Keris looks at me, her expression tired but full of affection, our new kitten cradled in her arms. I think I’ve won this battle.
“Has she got a name?”
“Nope. Why, do you have an idea?”
Keris hums thoughtfully for a moment. “Morgana?"
“Cute!” I grin. “And it’s a swear.”
“Don’t ruin it!” She laughs. It’s like the clouds part, a sunbeam I could lay in all day. I suddenly feel like I can see our whole future before us, just standing in our kitchen with our new kitten, even with the uncertainty around us. We've got each other. “I suppose we’ll just have to figure it out.” Keris acquiesces. I smile back.
“I suppose we will.”
