Description: A personal account of a USAF Forward Air Controller in a remote highland province in South Vietnam in 1969 and how he met "Steve Canyon" and transitioned to the "secret" war in Laos, living with the CIA and the Hmong clans and having near-complete control over the use of US airpower. This account has many illustrations of the grinding stress of intense combat in Laos, and the periodic clashes with the distant headquarters that had little knowledge of an extremely complex combat environment and was more focused on control rather than results.

Review: This book is one of the rare 5 stars for me. There were parts of the book that were absolutely incredible and make this book a must read! While it’s not a perfect book, those parts really showcase how this genre should be written. Instead of just saying “I flew here... I did this” ... he actually walks you through the mission, the steps, where he put his hands, how he got into the aircraft, what he saw, what he thought, what he felt. There is always more to the story than just what someone did... it’s important to make the tale multidimensional and also explain why in a big and small picture way. This author really did that well. At times the book slogs and gets more into the I flew 10 sorties that day, went to the bar, woke up the next day. He also talks a lot about the failures of the whole war and how it was run, which occupied too much space of the book. And yet, even with those criticisms, the book is really excellent! 

You get to see a side of the vietnam war in II corps, as well as the Laotian civil war, and the command and control issues with both, and the success and failure in both. 

Definitely a great read about a forward air controller during that time!

Mars 1965, le public italien connaît déjà les livres de Kenny, du moins en a-t-il entendu parler, car son protagoniste - l'agent secret Francis Coplan - a déjà occupé les écrans des cinémas italiens depuis 1958. Quand le 4 mars, les agences de presse font courir le bruit, qu'à Milan, l'éditeur Ripalta a signé un accord avec "les représentants des éditeurs français, anglais et américains pour la publication en italien de la plus importante série de livres d'espionnage au monde, la «Serie Verde Spionaggio» », quelque chose se met véritablement en mouvement. Pour lancer le personnage, le journal "La Stampa" se prête à un jeu très particulier.

Alors que le 4 mars arrive en kiosque le premier volume italien de la série Paul Kenny, «Agente Coplan, missione spionnagio» («Ainsi le voile sur le monde mystérieux et terrible du combat des ombres est levé»), le samedi suivant, 6 Mars, le journal rend compte de la «réunion secrète» internationale - à Genève, dans un grand hôtel du Quai Mont Blanc - réunion qui a fixé les conditions de la publication des aventures écrites par Kenny. "Puisque la série décrit les méthodes utilisées par les agents secrets du SDECE (et surtout par leur" numéro un "Francis Coplan), méthodes qui font appel à une violence sans précédent, avec abondance de détails effrayants sur la suppression de témoins parfois involontaires et sur l'utilisation de la torture la plus brutale, [les] éditeurs se sont engagés à limiter le nombre de volumes en vente dans les kiosques de leurs pays respectifs afin qu'ils ne viennent pas entre les mains de tout le monde (et donc aussi de personnes facilement impressionnables) mais uniquement des lecteurs passionnés et experts en espionnage. "

Quel meilleur lancement pour une histoire d'espionnage? On arrive au 31 mars et on apprend dans La Stampa (quotidien national!) que Francis Coplan lui-même vient de débarquer à Linate!

"Coplan a rencontré son éditeur Ribalta dans la soirée à Milan, au siège de la via Morosini 18. Ribalta lui a remis personnellement les dix premiers exemplaires en italien du volume "Coplan gioca la sua carta" par Paul Kenny (de cette histoire est tiré le film Uccidete agent segreto 777 - Stop avec Ken Clark). Volume qui, à partir d'aujourd'hui, est déjà en vente dans tous les kiosques de la péninsule. Francis Coplan est parti dans la nuit avec le Simplon-Express à destination de Paris." Qu'un journal national se prête à ces jeux littéraires est vraiment étonnant … Le 2 avril arrive ; le coup de tampon final doit être porté: «Mystérieuse disparition des livres compromettants» est le cri de «La Stampa». Le journal rapporte que la veille, le fatidique 1er avril, "ils sont venus et ont acheté tous les exemplaires des livres de Paul Kenny "Coplan gioca la sua carta " de la série Verde Spionaggio (Editoriale Ripalta) dans les kiosques, les achetant en gros". Se lançant dans mille suppositions de conspirations issues du «monde de l'ombre» et de l'espionnage, le journal conclut que l'opération "main basse" a été réalisée parce que le roman en question révélait trop de détails compromettants.

Le 30 mai, le jeu continue, l'éditeur Ripalta profitant de l'espace réservé du journal pour déconseiller l'achat du roman "Coplan gioca la sua carta" aux lecteurs impressionnables, mais à ce moment-là la mascarade est devenue trop évidente pour continuer: la combinaison Coplan a fait son temps mais l'effet souhaité était atteint. Dans les années 1960 Coplan sera un grand héros de la littérature en kiosque, et à partir de 1971, avec le roman "La longue nuit de l'agent Coplan", commencera son voyage dans la série "Segretissimo" de Mondadori, avant sa disparition dans les années 80.
