Dr Uday Salunkhe Speaks To The Financial Express
Tumblr media
WeSchool bagged two awards at Assocham’s 9th Higher Education Summit in New Delhi for the ‘Best Innovative Institute’ while Dr. Uday Salunkhe was honoured as ‘Best Education Entrepreneur’.
Here are some bytes from his interview with Vikram Chaudhary of The Financial Express:
Expectations from the upcoming Union Budget: Education needs more resources, funds and focus. The government must spend more on infrastructure with intense focus on quality and expanse.
“Higher Education creates professionals who can fuel the growth engine,” says Dr. Uday Salunkhe.
Views on Start-up India: Start-ups are going mainstream as they create wealth and generate employment. This is fourth industrial revolution. During such times, the start-up culture is bound to grow, and must grow.
Universities’ role in Start-up India and Skill India: Universities will help create an atmosphere to promote entrepreneurial mindset, risk-taking and, most importantly, an attitude that is not averse to failures. A few institutions, like IIT Bombay, The Munktell Science Park of Malardalen University in Stockholm are good examples.
Entrepreneurship cannot be taught in just two years at a business school. Thoughts? The statement is partially true. Entrepreneurship is a culture, not a workshop. It needs to be imbibed from an early age. Training is pivotal here. Two years of business school provides live projects, industry interface, EQ training, soft skills, internships and much more that help in creating entrepreneurs.
On the experience of working at the Nashik Kumbh: It was launched in collaboration with the MIT to resolve several civic issues. The initiative gave students a platform to complement technological solutions with management innovation. Students worked on several projects ranging from basic amenities to traffic management and health services.
Association with MIT: WeSchool has signed an MoU with MIT’s Venture Mentoring Services that gives access to methodologies used by them for mentoring ventures on their campus.
On Welingkar’s Venture Mentoring Platform? Welingkar has a mentor board comprising entrepreneurs, investors and attorneys. They interact with student to provide views on the concepts of ventures, the business model, and target groups. There are over 33 successful ventures that have taken off from this platform in the past three years.
On training corporates: Our MDPs cater to over 70 corporate houses, training personnel at different levels of their career.
Efforts on assimilating youth from Northeast India: We are working on enhanced interaction, representation and academic connectivity with the Northeast. The region has about 36 business schools. WeSchool will devise a plan on how to give them a bigger and meaningful exposure.

Controlling Attrition With Training And Retraining By Uday Salunkhe
Prof. Dr. Uday Salunkhe, group director, Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, justifies Training and Retraining as the perfect tool to tackle attrition
Corporates are thinking about retaining over firing because of the huge shortage of trained manpower across industries. There are confronting complex issues today with ill-defined problems and unclear solutions. It is evident that people produce and innovate better in collaborative networks and not individually.

Governance and Thought Leadership, A Symbiotic Relationship
Tumblr media
“Governance and thought leadership are two inextricably entwined traits.” says Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Welingkar Institute of Management.
Without effective thought leadership, governance remains a myth; it becomes effective and inclusive only if the element of thought leadership is at its core, which is reflected in the inclusive progress of all sections of society. The extreme challenges thrown up by the turbulent transition in our ecosystem can be solved with thought-leadership. Thought-leadership helps us face the external fluctuation and internal challenges smoothly.
Thought leadership configures feasible solutions considering even the last man and paves the way for governance works its way towards aspired goals, through challenges, dilemmas, and diversity. Thought leaders are futuristic and have the ability to connect the dots — their policies are set accordingly. A similar pattern can be observed in the government targets and their efforts in the direction.
A huge task for the leadership is to invest in the people and their mindsets. Attitude changes are required to yield optimum results. The recent visit by our Prime Minister to Silicon Valley brought forth the grey areas holding back innovation culture and growth of our own Silicon Valleys. These attitude changes have to be delicately worked upon and may call for bold reforms. Thought leadership has to be utilised to stitch together conflicting, but worthy mindsets seamlessly.
A thought leader ensures effective partnership among various stakeholders by taking them along, drawing out the best and willing cooperation from all, with tact, equanimity and vision. It needs incisive details of all the various elements at play.
A huge demographic section lives in inhabitable conditions. Effective thought leadership can enable the governance to reach the accruing benefits to people at large and mitigate the huge inequities. Thought leadership gives the leaders an enabling infrastructure to execute their ideas and innovations customised to meet the needs of the underprivileged in a system. Thought leadership is quintessentially inherent in governance.

“The India Start-Up Engine Is All Charged To Go” – Uday Salunkhe
India’s economy is fast changing with times. The numbers denote that it’s in a phase that is encouraging more and more start-ups to take off in a variety of sectors and industries.
As a culture, India has never boasted of an inherent risk-embracing entrepreneurial energy, unless the reference is to particular localized pockets in certain communities. For a while many young guns of business families have been traveling abroad to gain international exposure and education. When they are back, they introduce new concepts that they have imbibed on these stints.
The Start-up Story In the last decade, start-ups have been writing a whole new chapter for corporate India, and this seems directly linked to the increase in the number of highly-educated CEOs at helm.
Conducive Conditions for Nurturing Start-upsThe academic foundations of entrepreneur aside, there are several factors at work that directly contribute to a start-up-friendly environment in the economy. Here are a few.
The idea is to solve big infrastructure problems: The new-age businessmen no longer begin with the idea of starting a business; for them the business is a means to solve a problem.
High Appetite for Risk: Not only are people actively working from a problem towards a solution when thinking of a start-up, they are also less restricted by fears of failure and charting unexplored territory.
Support in the form of hubs, investments and incubators: With more than 3,000 technology start-ups, India is the fourth largest base for nascent businesses anywhere in the world.
Investors, too, are playing their part by placing trust in new start-ups and investing big.
A Strong Foundation Hubs like Microsoft Ventures and Welingkar empower nascent causes to do more. The WeSchool-MIT Venture Mentoring Service (VMS) was born out of the belief that active support of entrepreneurial activities contributes to the entrepreneurship education of the community.
India’s start-up scene is at a promising juncture. How the industry fares will be seen in the days to come, but, at this point in time, each sectoral component is playing its part and that’s vital.
Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, Welingkar Institute
