SSM20 #8: Letâs play pretend
Sakura tells Sasuke the reasons why they should get married. RTN!AU (Rated T)
When his father calls for a family meeting, Sasuke half fears itâs been finally revealed that he was the one that burned down the garden shed and not the neighborhood teens as he claimed.Â
But when his mother also arrives with a stern expression, Sasuke realizes this is worse than a bit of light arson.Â
He fidgets at the dining table nervously as he watches his father nod to his mother to begin.
âAs you know,â she starts, âyou are getting to age where one should consider settling down.â
Sasuke groans.Â
âMother!â But she raises her hand to silence him.Â
âSasuke, this is a good opportunity for you and the clan.âÂ
âWhat about Aniki?âÂ
His motherâs face adopts a sour look, not pleased to be interrupted. âYour brother has his own duties. You should only concern yourself with your own.âÂ
Sasuke tries to protest once again but his motherâs stony features leave no room for argument.
âId expect you not to embarrass yourself or the clan,â Her expression is one of usual exasperation at his antics. âSasuke, it is time for you to grow up.âÂ
---
Sasuke has always been quite bitter that his brother is allowed to gallivant around the countryside with his band of questionable acquaintances while the responsibilities of their clan are dumped onto him.
And itâs not that he doesnât want to get married either! Having spent so much of his life devoted to his familyâs whims, Sasuke at least wants to choose who he wants to spend his life with.Â
Secretly, he quite enjoys the daydreams where he comes home to have a quiet night with the love of his life and what he is sure to be their small squadron of children.Â
So Sasuke comes up with a plan.
He supposes if he makes himself an utter unmarriageable fool, this nonsense would be over. Even a name as prestigious as Uchiha would not be enough to secure an engagement if he is the most undesirable human being in the world.
So the day of the marriage interview, he tries to look like the failure his family assumes he is. Sasuke puts on a sweat suit he wore out to training two days ago paired with his sandals and mismatched fuzzy socks. He doesnât brush his teeth and doesnât even style his hair. He even spends a few days trying to grow a beard.
Sasuke looks like an absolute disaster. Which is quite a hard thing to do he might add; curse his beautiful face!
He arrives at the casual diner he had chosen feeling confident and clever, because what could be more disappointing to start off a potential marriage than a place he knows has more health violations than he has fingers?
That is until he realizes who his mother managed to set him up with.Â
Sakura-chan, beautiful as ever, is sitting in the sticky booth the hostess leads him to with a cup of what he is sure is black coffee.Â
Sasuke immediately regrets every life choice he has ever made. He wonders whether activating the Izanami right now would save him from dying of embarrassment.Â
A thousand thoughts are running through his head all at once. Is this a joke? What is Sakura-chan doing here? What about Menma? Should he turn around and walk out like nothing happened?
However she glances up at him with those lovely eyes of hers and Sasuke cannot help but blurt out the most pressing thing tumbling around in his short-circuiting brain.Â
âI thought you wanted to get married for love?!â
Not missing a beat, âGood morning to you too, Sasuke. I see you know how to impress a lady.â
Sasuke wonders if he can throw himself out the window.
But his pride dictates that he cannot embarrass himself anymore in front of Konohaâs fairest, so he squares up, grits his teeth, and slides into the booth.Â
âDonât change the subject,â taking in her own outfit. White coat and business casual. So it must be clinic day. âWhy are you here Sakura-chan?âÂ
He cannot think of any reason why Sakura would suddenly want to marry him; Sasuke has always considered the greatest tragedy and irony in his life is the fact that the love of his life does not feel the same way. So he waits for her explanation.Â
Sakura, to her credit, always is cool and collected and is logical to a fault. She does not shy away from his questioning facing him directly to answer.Â
âYour mother asked me to consider a marriage into the Uchiha clan.âÂ
Sasuke rolls his eyes, âJust because you two get along doesnât mean you have to humor her, especially when it comes to getting married!â Â
She takes a sip of her coffee, now not quite looking at him. Almost guilty. âShe told me that if I married either you or Itachi-san, your clan would back my bid for Hokage.â
Anger bubbles in his stomach. Envy burns down his throat. Betrayal is bitter on his tongue. It is one thing for his mother to meddle in his life, itâs another for Sakura to be so callous as to use his love for power.Â
âWhy are you meeting me then?â His brother might be a flighty vagabond, but Itachi is the heir and he is the spare.Â
She seems to understand what he is truly asking. âSasuke, you are a rising star in the Konoha. The people of this village trust you greatly.â
âYou canât stand me.â
âYouâre annoying but I donât hate you.â She smiles sadly, as if enjoying a particularly cruel joke. âI donât think I could hate you, truly.â
âSakura-chan, with all due respect, between your father and the Fifthâs recommendation, I donât think you need my family at all.â Â
Sasuke takes a deep calming breath to hide his frustration, trying to act nonchalant, âBut if you still want to get hitched Kitten, Iâm all for it.â He even throws in a lighthearted wink.Â
She ignores his last comment. âMy father and Tsunade-shishou are popular with the people, but the council is not fond of either of them. Too peace loving apparently.â
âMy family isnât very popular with the council either.âÂ
âBut the Uchiha clan is one of the oldest clans in Konoha, its influence is enough to convince other families. Enough to over rule the council.â Sakura smiles wryly, âIn return, the Uchiha clan will have ties with the Hokage office. Think of it as a strategic alliance.â
This is just like Sakura, cold and calculating. Sasuke does not hate it; her ambitions are part of her charm.
âWhatâs in it for me then?â
âIf you do accept, your parents would be satisfied you are an upstanding, successful citizen and will no longer have any right prying in your affairs.âÂ
He doubts that it would stop them but allows her to continue, âI also donât plan toâŚinterfere with your extramarital activities.â Sasuke begins to feel a sense of dread as Sakura continues, âA marriage of convenience if you will.âÂ
This is his boiling point and he finds himself shouting.Â
âNo, itâs a sham! How you could have completely given up on love?!âÂ
Sakura is a woman who has always been loved shallowly and one can only be the object of admiration for long before realizing itâs only empty reverence. The one thing she always craved is the unconditional love she lost so long ago along when her parents passed. Sasuke cannot believe Sakura can give up that so easily.Â
âYouâre the one who doesnât understand anything Charasuke!â She is now equally angry, âDo you think I want to use my husbandâs name to get the Hokageâs seat!? How everything Iâve spent my life working for amounts to nothing in the eyes of the council?! â
âIt doesnât mean you have to sacrifice your own happiness for this!â Because even now, even though his affections for her are unyielding and painful and true, he just wants her to be happy.Â
To find love and be loved, even if it isnât with him.
âIâm running out of time!â She is shaking now, in anger, in frustration, in a hopelessness Sasuke has never seen. âTsunade -shishou told me that the council is considering making Menma the Hokage after she retires.â
âMenma? What? He can barely carry conversation!â And he is impulsive. Just as likely to start a war as he is to end it.Â
Sakura looks sick, âMenma has a strong shinobi, but thatâs all he is. He is not suited for politics. He only knows how to end conflicts with shows of strength.â
âDo you really think that Menma will actually accept the position?â Because regardless of their disagreements, Menma is still his best friend. Menma isnât the type to seek power wantonly.Â
âMaybe, maybe not. But he is now married to the Hyuuga family. And you know how easily he can be influenced.â
Sasuke wants to defend his friendâs honor but he admits she has a point.
âSo when your mother came to me about this...I donât know I just thought this might be my only chance.Â
I know this is unfair to you, which is why we can just pretend to be a married couple in name only. You are under no obligation to change your ways Sasuke.â Â
Sakura is resigned to her fate to a supposedly loveless marriage and Sasuke hates it.Â
âBut I cannot let Menma and the council turn this village into a battlefield. I cannot let them ruin my parentâs legacy.âÂ
This is insane. Itâs not right. She may be the logical one, but he has always been the romantic.Â
This is not at all how he imagines their life together would be.Â
Sakura takes in his uncharacteristic silence as the end of the conversation and gathers her things.Â
âYou donât have to answer me right now, just think about it.â And with that she departs, leaving him alone in the booth.Â
---
Sasuke has always pretended that his familyâs obvious favoritism and Sakuraâs indifference towards him, never bothered him.Â
He distracts himself with pretty girls and pretty flowers. But really, he just does not have the courage to face the reality of being the fallback and second place.Â
That no matter what he does or how hard he works, he will never measure up to the Uchihaâs prodigal son or even his best friend.Â
He just wants someone to look at him and only him.
And maybe that's why he has always been so drawn to Sakura, the daughter of fallen heroes.Â
Because maybe she just also wanted someone to see her tears. To realize what was underneath her facade.Â
The pretty girl who cries when she is alone so she doesnât bother anyone else, yet in front of the rest of the world is the image of stunning grace and confidence. Who heals him when he bleeds and listens to him when he cannot bear the expectations of his family anymore.Â
He admires her bravery. He falls for her kindness.Â
Sasuke loves her, he has for a long time.Â
He wonders if she knows this.Â
And so thatâs why he is waiting outside the clinic later that afternoon, in his best clothes, clean shaven, with a bouquet of lavender flowers.Â
No more pretenses.Â
He will give her his name, the world, and their marriage will be anything but loveless. He will make sure of it.

The Art of Seduction
***
âHey â whatâs that?â
âWhatâs what?â
One sunny afternoon, amidst Sasuke and Sakuraâs private travels, while Sakura was rinsing her tired feet and Sasuke was sharpening their weapons after weeks of climbing mountains and hiking through forests, the duo was unexpectedly interrupted.
âThat! Flying straight at us!â Sakura shouted and leaping clear out of the rushing brook, over the rocky shore, and onto the surrounding grass.
Sasuke raised an eyebrow and glanced in the direction of the disturbance.
âA bird,â he said simply without budging from his shady spot at the foot of a large oak tree.
Sakura rolled her eyes before breaking out into a grin. âNot just any bird â itâs the Hokageâs messenger hawk!â
This piqued Sasukeâs interest. It had been months since the pair had heard a peep from their home village, after all.
As it happened, the bird was carrying a scroll addressed to Sakura.
âWhat does Kakashi want?â Sasuke asked, while hopping to his feet and joining his companion by the brook. Sakura was crouched by the rocky shore, eagerly unravelling the scroll.
Sasuke watched her closelyâ taking in the emotion brimming behind her emerald eyes and her trembling fingers.
She misses home, Sasuke thought, his chest tightening. Though he didnât blame her, Sasuke just hoped she didnât miss home too much.
He didnât express it much, but Sasuke thoroughly enjoyed his lively travelling companionâs company. And he really didnât want her to leave.
Then, as quickly as it appeared, the hopefulness drained from Sakuraâs face as she scanned the letter. She pouted and scrunched her eyebrows together (a rather adorable expression, in Sasukeâs opinion, all things considered).
âWhat, Sakura?â he asked and drawing closer, crouching beside her, and hoping beyond hope this wasnât bad news.
âItâs⌠a mission assignment.â
There was confusion written all over her features. Sasuke didnât blame her.
âBut youâre with me. Weâre already on a mission,â he mused while reaching for the scroll to have a look himself, but, to his surprise, Sakura tugged the scroll out of his reach, colour rising in her face.
Sasuke blinked. âSakura..?â
She twisted away from him, her face buried in the scroll and her cheeks a similar hue as her pale, pink hair. âItâs assigned just to me. And itâs a⌠weird one,â she said quietly, like she couldnât believe what she was reading.
âWhatâs the mission?â Sasuke asked, dread pooling in his stomach.
âA seduction mission.â
***
Sakura paced back and forth through the grassy clearing in bare feet, hands clasped behind her back, and feeling stressed out of her mind. Sakura had never been assigned a seduction mission before. She had most certainly fantasized about doing one, back in her early teenage days, as most young kunoichi did. Because there had been a certain thrill in using her sex appeal as a weapon against an unsuspecting opponent. It was the perfect blindside.
But these times were different.
Nowadays, Sakura would much rather spend her time exploring the land with her beloved travelling partner than seduce strangers. And, to boot, Sakura had never been particularly confident in her ability to sway someone romantically (with her ever-so-distant object of affection compounding her self-doubts).
Sasukeâs reaction to her mission had been rather hard to read. He seemed puzzled as he read the letter over a couple of times himself. âDo you do these often?â he asked with raised eyebrows, his voice catching ever so slightly.
âNo, never,â she groaned and crossing her arms.
This is going to be terrible, she thought. Failing to make a move on the love of her life even once during their months travelling alone together told her as much. Although she and Sasuke had undoubtedly grown closer and were teetering on the edge of being in a relationship â between their heated looks and gentle touches â nothing outwardly romantic had actually transpired between them.
And now Sakura was expected to leave to seduce someone else?
Some wing man you are, Kakashi-sensei.
âThen whyâd he assign you?â Sasuke wondered with narrowed eyes while pocketing the scroll.
Sakura shrugged. âWell, weâre only a few miles away from the village that the⌠target is currently in. I bet Kakashi-sensei has been tracking our whereabouts and picked me because of proximity. Plus the target isnât staying there much longer so Iâll need to set out first thing tomorrow.â
According to the mission assignment, the target in question was an important Wind Country delegate who (rumour had it) was involved in a human trafficking scheme. Apparently he was known as being a bit of a ladies man â thus, Sakura presumed, seduction tactics were a straight-forward means of extracting information from him.
âHm,â Sasuke said.
âBut I donât know the first thing about seducing someone!â Sakura fumed, hands on her hips as she resumed her pacing. âKakashi-sensei screwed up. Itâs gonna be a total flop.â
Sasuke was quiet for a moment. âIâm sure youâll figure it out,â he said before returning to the shade of the tree and resuming his task of sharpening their weapons.
Sakura watched as he ran a hand through his black, mused hair and grabbed a kunai and ran the blade along the sharpening stone with determined, aggressive motions. His expression was impassive, with his dark eyes focused on the task and his mouth frowning in concentration.
Sakura turned away, as not to be caught ogling at her handsome companion.
But that was when she was struck with an idea. An embarrassing, yet intriguing idea.
âHey, Sasuke-kun?â she asked, feeling her face warm in anticipation.
He glanced at her. âWhat?â
She returned his gaze. âHow do you do it?â Sakura asked bravely. âYou know, women practically faint in your presence. How do you get their attentions so easily?â
Sakura figured he was a neutral party on the matter, and she was willing to follow any advice she could get her hands on. After all, she could personally attest to the effect her travelling companion had on women, so surely he had some advice.
Sasuke redirected his stare to something on the ground. âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
Sakura rolled her eyes and joined him beneath the tree. âOh sure you donât,â she teased. She plopped down right in front of him. Despite her embarrassment, she couldnât help but smirk because Sasuke looked about as uneasy as she felt, his face tinted pink and his eyebrow twitching as he tried to avoid looking at her. âCâmon. Whatâs your secret?â
He looked up and there was something almost pleading in his dark eyes. âSakura, believe me. I have no clue what Iâm doing,â he said. He held her gaze and Sakuraâs heart skipped a beat for some reason. But she ignored it.
She pouted. Maybe heâs right â heâs just so effortlessly attractive that he doesnât even have to try.
Sakura felt a dip in her confidence as she was reminded that the two of them werenât in the same leagues.
But she needed to try anyways.
âFine,â she huffed. âBut I need your help because I donât know what Iâm doing either and I need to complete this mission. And youâre the only person I have to consult.â
Sasuke eyed her apprehensively as she resumed her pacing.
Meanwhile, Sakuraâs mind wandered. What on earth was she to wear for this mission? She only had training gear with her and she certainly didnât have any make-up on hand. With such a tight schedule, a shopping trip was out of the question. Should she just wear her undergarments â her spandex shorts and black band around her chest?
Iâll feel uncomfortable wearing something that revealing, Sakura thought, her heartrate quickening. Did she really have to change her appearance that much, or was it more about her demeanor â how she moved and how her voice sounded, or whatever?
Ugh, Iâm so confused!
Sakura gritted her teeth and stopped her pacing. Abruptly, she turned to face Sasuke square on. He was sipping from a water canteen, watching her curiously. âYouâre a guy,â she pointed out. âLetâs pretend youâre my target. What would seduce you?â
Sasuke swallowed a mouthful of water with a profound gulp.
He blinked at her after that, eyebrow twitching again. He opened his mouth and closed it, faltering.
Sakura realized perhaps her question was too loaded. Letâs back it up, then. âHow about â what are you attracted to in a woman? Letâs start with that.â
She watched him expectedly.
Sasuke seemed particularly fascinated by a knife he was sharpening when he said, âUm. Strength.â
âStrength,â Sakura repeated, a bit flatly. Really?
âAnd intelligence,â Sasuke added, his head tilted down and his eyes concealed from view behind his hair.
The knife he was sharpening really couldnât get any sharper.
Sakura folded her arms and reflected on Sasukeâs comments. I wonder if he thinks Iâm strong and smart enough to be attractive? Despite her generally low self-esteem, Sakura was fairly confident that she excelled in both of those areas, especially now.
She felt the tiniest tinge of hope. If thatâs what heâs into, maybe Iâve got a shot?
But that was besides the point. She had a mission to focus on.
Did other men look for strength and intelligence in women? She wasnât sure. Either way, it would be hard to show off those qualities to her target, unless she challenged him to an arm wrestling contest or a game of cards.
Sakura suspected there were more straight-forward ways to seduce a stranger.
She sighed. âThis would be so much easier if I were talking to Naruto,â she groaned while leaning against a protruding rock between the brook and the tree. Sakura had a feeling that said Hokage-in-the-making had an arsenal of strategies for seducing men â given his experience using those very strategies in the guise of his Sexy Jutsu.
Sasuke turned to her, a trace of competitiveness in his eyes, before he seemed to remember what they were talking about and turned away.
It seemed he was willing to accept defeat from his rival on this particular matter.
âOkay, how about looks? You must have thoughts about looks, at least?â Sakura tried.
Sasuke raised an eyebrow. âWhat are you asking?â
She felt her heartrate quicken again, for some reason. âI mean, what do you find seductive about a womanâs appearance?â she clarified.
I canât believe weâre having this conversation.
As anticipated, Sasuke looked dumbfounded by her question. But he at least seemed to be thinking about it, given his thoughtful stare into the distance with his eyebrows furrowed.
It was kind of him to play along and try to help â despite his clear discomfort. Sakura felt a stab of empathy and decided to ask what she felt was an easier question.
Thinking back to their Genin days, and Inoâs insistence that Sasuke preferred certain hairstyles on girls, Sakura asked, âFor instance â should I change my hair?â
There wasnât much she could do about its length or colour â unless she got her hands on a wig, somehow. But maybe she could style it differently, by tying it up or braiding it? Â
âNo,â Sasuke replied curtly.
âOkay⌠what about make-up?â
Sasuke shook his head before getting up with the water canteen in hand. âNo. Youâre fine,â he said, and making his way towards the brook.
Sakura looked up, her heart fluttering slightly because maybe that meant he liked the way she looked.
Or maybe he was just trying to end the conversation.
Sasuke crouched on the rocky shore of the brook, dipping the canteen beneath its surface for a top-up.
Sakuraâs eyes roamed skyward to the tuffs of clouds, her mind running astray. She didnât mean to torment Sasuke with this awkward conversation, but she really did need all the help she could get. She imagined herself entering a darkened pub to execute her mission. She just had to pull this off, somehow, because if her enemies caught onto her, it could turn into a dangerous situation â not for her personally, for surely she could pummel her enemy if she needed to, but there could be larger international strain if she was caught spying.
Sakura closed her eyes as she imagined approaching her target at the bar. She would introduce herself, start some small talk⌠and then
âMaybe I should touch him⌠suggestively. But not too inappropriately, you know?â she mused.
âNo, I have no clue what you mean,â Sasuke chimed in. He was now sitting on the shore with his shoes discarded and pants rolled up, his feet resting in the cool, rushing stream as he replenished their supply of drinking water.
Sakura carried on. âYou know â like running my fingers along his hands, caressing his face, or something. Maybe that would work?â
Once again, Sasuke seemed very fixated on his task. âMaybe,â he said.
But Sakura wasnât really paying attention to him. She was in her own world now, talking through a scenario she was playing out in her head.
She imagined Tsunade or Ino â two of the most sought-after woman that Sakura knew â walking into a bar and harnessing the attention of most men they passed.
What was their secret?
âI know â maybe itâs just a confidence thing,â Sakura realized. âMaybe itâs more about how I say things.â
She stood up with vigour, facing the general direction of the tree, paced forward deliberately, swaying her hips and imagining that her target was before her. She ran a hand through her hair in a way she imagined must be at least somewhat attractive, and said, âLike what if I walk right up and whisper in his ear ââ (Sakura cleared her throat and tried out a low and husky tone) â- I want you. You want me. Letâs get naked. And⌠AndâŚâ
Sakura faltered. I canât do it, she thought while dropping to her knees.
Then she remembered her silent audience and peered in Sasukeâs direction nervously. To her horror, he was indeed watching her, his eyes wide and his lips pursed â like he was supressing a smirk.
He thinks Iâm ridiculous. Sakura put her face in her hands. âIâm sorry. This is embarrassing. Iâm so bad at this.â
Sasuke shook his head and stood up, capping the water canteen.
âIâm such a lost cause,â Sakura continued. âI donât even have a nice outfit to wear.â She fiddled with the zipper at the front of her dress absent-mindedly. âBut maybe if I just remove my training clothes slowly enough, itâll distract him from the stupid things Iâm saying. Then Iâll just have to hope that ââ
Sakura was interrupted by Sasuke grabbing her wrist, squeezing just hard enough to force her to release the zipper.
She turned to him, startled. âSasuke-kun?â
He looked a little conflicted â perhaps over being amused and angry â and there was a bit of colour on his face again. Upon closer inspection, it looked like a blood vessel was about to burst in his temple. âThat might work,â he said. âDonât do it.â He gave her a pointed look and stalked back towards the tree.
âWell, what am I supposed to do then?â Sakura asked his retreating figure, feeling more confused than ever.
âYouâll do fine, Sakura,â Sasuke mumbled with a dismissive air.
Sakura folded her arms and watched him pace away, not quite sure what to make of his comment.
She sighed again and muttered, âI wish I could just kick the guyâs ass.â
***
Sakura woke abruptly to the sounds of scuffling and snapping twigs.
Wasting no time, she grabbed a kunai from her weapon pouch and sprang to her feet in one fluid motion.
Damn it, Sakura thought. She was planning to set out for the seduction mission today â and how untimely it would be to get ambushed now.
That was when she realized that Sasuke, who had fallen asleep beside her under the looming oak tree, was missing.
Sakura felt a swell of panic as her eyes darted around. And then she heard more scuffling, and this time, a male voice yelling (though muffled slightly) from somewhere through the trees ahead.
Sakura inhaled sharply and raced through the trees, knife in hand, towards the source of the disturbance. And then, moments later, Sakura arrived on a perplexing scene.
âSasuke-kun?â she asked and slowly lowering her knife.
Her travelling companion was standing there, wearing his usual black travelling cloak, with his back facing her. Evidently, he was just fine.
It was the man bound to the tree who didnât look fine.
Sasuke turned towards her. He seemed a little surprised by her presence. âGood morning,â he said evenly.
âGood⌠what the heck is going on?!â Sakura exclaimed as she approached the pair of them, studying the bound man carefully. She didnât recognize the guy whatsoever. But Sasuke wasnât the type of person to capture strangers for no reason, so surely he had an explanation for this. âIâve got a mission to complete today, so this had better be important!â
Sasuke turned to her, his expression calm. âThereâs no need for you to go anywhere â this is your guy,â he said simply, and gesturing towards the bound man like he was presenting a gift.
Sakuraâs jaw dropped. âSo⌠youâre telling me that you abducted the man I was supposed to seduce?â Sakura asked and massaging her temples, the puzzle pieces coming together. She felt a tinge of relief come over her because normal interrogations were much more up her alley than seduction missions.
But something still didnât add up. âWhy?â she asked.
The man bound to the tree nodded stiffly and mumbled against his mouth restraints â apparently just as keen to find out what Sasuke was planning. He had a long, straight nose, grey streaks through his black hair, and expensive-looking pyjamas.
Yep, looks like an important delegate to me, Sakura thought.
Sasuke folded his arms, closed his eyes, and turned away slightly. âI knew you were stressed about the mission so I helped,â he explained. âI figure you can just ask him your questions here and Iâll wipe his memory with my Sharingan when youâre finished.â
He didnât seem terribly concerned that the target could hear all of his.
Sakura frowned. Sure, it was nice of Sasuke to lend a hand, but Sakura found herself feeling angry. âSo you didnât think I was capable of doing the mission so you decided to intervene,â she snapped, rounding on him.
Sasuke turned to face her fully, eyes wide. âNo, youâre capable..â
Sakura raised her eyebrows. âSo you just didnât want me to go on the mission.â Boldly, she placed a hand on his shoulder.
âNo, I didnât,â he finally admitted. And then, yet another surprise, Sasuke brought a hand to Sakuraâs face, tracing her temple, cheek bone, and jaw with the tips of his fingers.
Thatâs a caress to the face if I ever saw one! she thought as a shiver raced down her spine. She was unable to look away. âBecause you donât want me seducing men,â she added with a smirk while she gazed at Sasukeâs face. Her heart was in her throat for being this close to him. Â
Sasukeâs fingers paused around her chin. His face was very close to hers now. âBecause I donât want you seducing other men,â he corrected quietly.
Sakura stared at him, processing the implications of his words as her face grew hot, and he leaned in closer. His nose was mere inches from hers, his breath warm on her face. Sakuraâs eyes fluttered closed.
Itâs happening! Itâs finally happening!
âAhem.â
Sakura startled and jumped about ten feet away from Sasuke. Enraged, she whirled in the direction of the disturbance and found that their captive, still tied to the tree, had chewed through his mouth binds and was glaring at them.
âNot that this isnât fun, but if itâs not too late to change plans, I much prefer the one where this girl seduces me.â
Sakura rolled her eyes, her face still burning, as she smoothed out her hair.
Thatâs when she heard a familiar chirping sound. A sideways glance confirmed the Chidori in Sasukeâs palm. But even more menacing was the glare he was directing at their target.
âSasuke-kun â wait! Just let me interrogate him first, okay? Then we can get back to⌠where we left off?â
Sasuke shot her a calculating look, eyes narrowed. He swallowed. It seemed he was quite torn between doing as Sakura asked or immediately murdering the guy tied to the tree. But in the end he caved, sitting on the ground with a humph, waiting impatiently for Sakura to finish her questioning.
Sakura hoped Kakashi wouldnât be too disappointed that sheâd failed to follow the instructions for the mission.
Then again, another part of her wondered if maybe, just maybe, this was the outcome Kakashi planned for all along.

Chapter 02: Can You Feel Without Thinking?
Summary: Being in charge as Sasukeâs stylist sure is challenging, when you have to pretend youâre only focusing on your job and not caring whether he would spare a glance once or twice.
Rating: K
*A/N: In honor of 2020 Sasusaku Month, Iâve decided to dedicate this chapter to Sasusaku Month Day 8, prompt:Â âLetâs Play Pretendâ.
As early as it may be, K4 has to go on with their next schedule. Being famous comes with many perks but time is what they lack of. Frequently being called for commercial shoots, press interviews, magazine photo shoots, they are constantly moving from one place to another, every seven days of the week. Of course Shikamaru can allow one, two or more free days.
But today is not one of those days. The car ride to the photo shoot seems to drag on forever as their minds are wandering, venturing the fields, through the morning mist as the horizon moves pass them.
The one-hour ride finally comes to an end and the four of them step out of the car, followed by the staff members and of course, Shikamaru the manager.
Theyâre going to do a drinkâs commercial shoot, and Sakura has to admit, this is one of those shoots that she will enjoy.
The boys are all settled in a chair, in front of a mirror, already changed into the appointed attires. Make up kits, hairbrushes, and all other equipments sit on the large table in front of them.
âGood morning.â Sakura greets Sasuke as she approaches him. They donât usually talk much, but he will always have the courtesy to greet her with a nod whenever they meet or part.
âMorning.â Sasuke chimes back. She gives a warm smile as she picks up the hair brush and begins to tidy up his hair while putting on some hairspray.
The summer heat can be quite a bother and since this is a drinkâs commercial, shooting it in summer time seems to be the perfect time.
It only takes thirty minutes for Sakura to fix his hair, and put some make up on him. He even lets her fix his collar.
âThank you.â He would always give thanks to her whenever sheâs done her work. She canât help but fluster a bit.
âYouâre welcome.â
Camera flashes rain through the spacious garden as the group poses in front of the camera., each holding a bottle of the advertised beverage.Â
Sakura canât help but think how gorgeous those boys look. But all the while they are being photographed, her eyes keep lingering on Sasuke. His attire a loose grey cotton shirt with sleeves that run to his elbows with the first three buttons unbuttoned, making it easy to see that toned chest of his, not to mention how the loose khaki pants seem to adorn his features even more. His dark raven hair has been styledâby herâin such a way so the ends stand up just a bit while the bangs covered the side of his face.
Sakura wonders how a person can be so attractive.
Twenty minutes into the photoshoot, the boys take a break to recover from the warm summer atmosphere. Sakura holds up a cloth to wipe Sasukeâs sweat away. She dabs the cloth on his nose, cheeks, forehead, and neck. She pays attention at how his sweat makes him glisten underneath the fluorescent light, how his eyes pick up everything thatâs happening around them, so calculated, so perceptive.
âThank you.â He says it again, every time. Â
âDonât mention it.â She returns with a smile before he returns to the set.
The human heart is a strange organ. It seems to be running on its own power, a rebel of the brainâs commands because she doesnât know how or whyâor maybe she does know whyâbut her heartâs beating at 120 beats per minuteâwhich in fact is fast for a normal person.
What is this feeling? She asks herself. She has no idea what her own heart is telling her.
Little does she know, she mightâve developed a crush for this famous singer.
Why? Heâs handsome, caring, kind, gentle.
She lists off the reasons in her head, all the way her eyes never leaving his form as the camera flashes several times. But will this end well? After all theyâre working under the same company, and you know what people say about office romance.
âIâm f*ckedâ
