The Awesome 8Q is one of the best and most simple mechs of the succession wars- a massive brick of heat sinks slathered in armor and armed with three particle projection cannons to pound anything in sight flat with caged lightning. When lostech was rediscovered and the double heat sink became a thing of less than myth and legend, every Awesome pilot in the inner sohere knew exactly what sort of new ride they needed
Only for Irian BMU to created a accursed 9M instead- too hot, too fast, too fragile, too many randon ssrm-2s the lostech AWS-9M is everything wrong about TRO:3050 in a nutshell. It took IBMU and Technicron Manufacturing *eight god damn years* for someone to stick their head out of the drafting room and realize all every Awesome pilot wanted were some god damn freezers an an extra gun. When they did, though, it was *perfect*

The launch of supply Dragon CRS28/SpX28 will take place at 16:47 BST from LC-39A today (5 Jun) onboard the 237th Falcon 9 launch. The capsule, C208, is making it's fourth flight and the first stage, B1077, it's sixth flight. The booster will land onboard the landing ship Marmac 302 'A Shortfall of Gravitas' in the Atlantic, this will be the 198th Falcon 9 first stage landing
As well as some 7,000 lbs of supplies and experiments the Dragon will also carry the third set of iROSA solar arrays for the station, to augment the existing Solar Array Wings (SAW) which have become degraded over the years. These will be mounted at the base of two of the existing arrays by astronauts during spacewalks this Friday (9 Jun) and 15 June, once the SSRMS station arm has unloaded them from the Dragon external payload bay or trunk.
Coverage from 16:15 BST on NASA TV will launch scheduled for 16:47 BST.

Update: I was wrong Aleksander Gorbunov retained his pilots seat and Wilmore and Williams flew in the outboard passenger seats
On Sunday Dragon C212 Freedom or USCV-9/SpXC-9 will be flown from the forward port of the station to one 'on top' (the station maintains a certain orientation although it can fly in an attitude and does occasionally). Freedom will move from its current port (as pictured on 7 Oct from the window of the previous crew's Dragon USCV-8/SpXC-8, since departed, then docked at the port Freedom is heading for) to the one above it. This is to allow the next cargo Dragon to dock at the forward port (not sure why put probably to allow access for the giant Dexter robot mounted on the SSRMS robot arm to grab something in the cargo Dragon's 'truck' or rear payload bay). For this flight the two former Starliner crew, Captain Sunita 'Sunny' Williams and Captain Barry 'Butch' Wilmore will take up their seats in Dragon provided for them after USCV-9 launched with only two crew instead of four (the full crew are onboard for these little flights in case of some problem re-docking and they have to return to Earth). I'm assuming Wilmore will take over the role of Pilot from the Russian Aleksander Gorbunov who launched with Dragon Commander Nick Hague (Gorbunov was given some sort of contingency training, in the time available, but not enough to fly the Dragon manually on his own)[I was wrong about that see update above]. Sunny Williams is also now the current station Commander, but NASA astronaut Don Pettit (who launched with the Russian crew on Soyuz MS-26/72S, will still be onboard to look after the US (and partners) side of the station. Ok so I wanted to see if it was even loosely possible in MW5, with a loooot of mods, to make this theoretical mech possible
Unfortunately, MW5 is an inflexible monster of a game, so, the best I can do is find Anything that fits the weapons required.
And that....would unfortunately, be literally Only the fucking Direwolf (With 6.44 tons of negative mass because its Physically Impossible to do this anyway)
So here, behold, the absolutely god awful mech in question in a less TT-crunchy context
now you might ask "Hm, numbers seem a little Off, is something Wrong here?"
and you'd be right to ask that. The answer is Yes and that is that I can't just make an arbitrary 'mech chassis to test this on so I'm stuck with: Mech relevant Quirks (don't matter too much here), and 100 tonner structure, which can just be handwaved in this case
I even couldn't give it the proper Primitive armor without having to sacrifice *something* so it gets the benefit of era-inappropriate modern 'Mech armor! A whole...5 of it (I was generous) per component + 2 on the back torsos. (I am choosing to ignore quirk armor bonuses for this)
And yeah it goes slow. MW5 doesn't recalculate speed based on tonnage or anything so I'd have to stuff an overweight engine into it to make it not a snail.
Also Light Rifles (And rifles in general) in MW5 aren't actually *as* bad as TT but it's due to a few things. First is fun, which TT is not, often, because its got 30 years of design rot going on. Second is that MW is built around a wildly different timescale from Tabletop. TT assumes a 10s round. MW assumes *real time* and has to make compromises for that. 'Mechs have twice the armor they should, but weapons fire, often, twice as fast as tabletop. The LR does double the damage and is hotter than the tabletop version to make up for it. With a 2s cooldown, to boot. And it still sucks (Yet Another Revamped Weapon slapped 67% damage loss to 'Mech armor onto all three rifles (and their Burst variants. don't ask ok I don't have time))
As far as the other weapons go, the rockets had to go to arm-town because I can't change the 3 Omni-BE-Slots in the side torsos to be proper Omni without installing a 20Gb Unreal editor just to do that. So...arms it is.
also to point out, these are the Negative Mass modules in question
They are explicitly a cheat thing, but were required here to hit the 50t target because the direwolf's chassis itself is a bloated motherfucker at >26t in MW5 YACM mod
Also, it has too much ammo. Like, a lot too much. One ton of LR ammo in MW5 gives SEVENTY TWO shots. Each.
One ton of SSRM Ammo is 300 missiles (firing X per volley, so it doesn't give as many shots as it sounds)
NARC ammo is 20/t as well.
Oh, and cockpits cannot be torso mounted. I know, cringe. PGI needs to hire some people with vision.
Anywho all this is to say "hey you theoretically could put this together but it requires a 100t chassis with nearly no armor and literally impossible negative mass modules"
Oh also if you fire your rockets your damage just drops 2/3rds, lol. SSRMs doing a LOT of heavy lifting here
Here it is with just the rifle :)
Can The Titans from Titanfall Beat a Battlemech from Battletech?
To make a long story short, ffffffFFUCK no. HAH! Absolutely not.
But how did i reach this conclusion, you may ask? I will tell you.
OK. So. Introductions first. Meet Tone. She is long considered a menace(somehow, even though she's not hard to counter) to the Titanfall fandom and originally what inspired this thought process. She is a mech that has 4 very important distinctive features i will be bringing up repeatedly in this pseudo-essay. Those 3 things being her 40mm Tracker Cannon, her Tracking Rockets, her Salvo Core, and her Sonar Pulse.
Her Tracking Rockets will be compared to the Streak SRM 6, her sonar pulse will be compared to the NARC missile beacon, her Salvo compared to the Rocket Launcher 20 +10, (i will explain, dont crucify me just yet), and our first item on the docket, the 40mm Tracker Cannon compared to the Light Rifle.
Now, why the Light Rifle? Well it's mainly for one reason. The ammo count. As a matter of fact, while I was looking up shit for this essay, I found that one brand of AC/2 is chambered in 40mm. Specifically, the Whirlwind L, found on older Blackjack models. Perfect match!, except for the ammo count. In the Tracker cannon, or TC for short, (not to be confused with the BattleTech Targeting Computer,) the ammo per box is 12, 24 if you count the Aegis upgrades, which i will not be for this essay. The closest match, then, which has similar damage and ammo per "box", would be the Light Rifle, which has 18 rounds per ton, and in BattleTech, the Light Rifle is a primitive cannon that predates the AC/2. Government work and hand grenades, as they say.
The Tracking Rockets being the Streak SRM 6 and the Sonar Pulse being the Narc is self explanatory, and thusly will not be discussed at length here. Do your own math. However, to the moment you've all been waiting for, the Salvo Core being two Rocket Launcher 30 batteries. This is exclusively because i am bad at the game, and i can usually only get two cores, before I get punched through the face and have my lunch money (battery) taken away by a particularly hungry Monarch. Also, as a funny coincidence, the Salvo Core is 60 missiles fired from what would be in BattleTech the SRM launchers. This is illegal. Thusly, to replicate the damage from the Salvo core, but keep the tonnage reasonable, I have added two Rocket launcher 20s with two RL-10s respectively to simulate what the Salvo core is like to fire. I tried two MRM 30s. They did not fucking work.
Now that being said, this is the Mech we would end up with if we were playing Battletech.
Yes, the torso mounted cockpit is because the Tone doesn't technically have a head module.
If you have questions, let me know. If you have complaints, please feel free to build your own. Megamek is free. I am not. I still have rather expensive organs. I need those.
Now this looks like a serviceable mech on paper, right?
If you said yes, you are either guessing based on the RLs, or you are an unhinged goblin who uses a Panther with an AC/20 on it. This mech has lacking offensive capability once the RLs are gone, with pitiful midrange consisting of the lone Light Rifle and only half decent short range. The SRMS having a STREAK tracking system is a lone saving grace to this scrap heap. This machine can only really be used to bluff. And not much more.
#mechwarrior#mw5#mechwarrior 5#battletech#theory crafting#god I really do wish a good MW game could come out ever in my lifetime#No I will not play 3

Do you think those rumors would exist without some truth them? If they were and I knew I would certainly not be at liberty to tell nor do I think I would be believed if I did.
What I will say is that considering the things I have done in my life. Invading terra and slipping through defense systems and begin an assault against overwhelming odds in the hopes of nigh magical memory cores. It sounds like something I would expect somebody in the Dragoons to have done. Heck, it sounds like something I would have liked to do. Riding that edge into the gates of hell itself and fight against all odds.
There probably was a powerful mech there in such a case. The data cores may well have contained information and exhibit holo-graphic functions as to appear magical to the layman.
So there probably is truth somewhere.
Anyway. Mechs.
My first mech that became truly my own was a Cataphract. Me and my friend, Colonel Kato recieved an Orion and a Cataphract. I took the cataphract. It was originally a 4X model. But after a few contracts I came to the feeling that it was a bit too slow for my liking. We refitted it into holding multiple SRM6 launchers and medium lasers. Upgrading its speed and adding jumpjet capability which was the hardest part of all of that. In many ways this refit turned it into a bigger, meaner and angrier version of the downgraded kintaro. And as a close range brawler I started to shine. I was in my element. Cutting the night like a razor blade and felt exactly what I wanted to feel. I wrought havoc in my wake pushing spheroid pilots to their limits with how aggressively I thought. After all. What kind of madwoman would jump infront of a a hunchback staring it in the cockpit and fire everything the mech could offer?
The Kodiak designated Crinos. Something about werewolves I do not know. Anyway. It requires some pretty extensive refits in order to change the myomers within it. To Triple Strength Myomers. A removing the ultra AC/20 and SSRMs in favour in the chest in favour for a more energy based loadout. A super charger and active probe. More armour and jump jets. Its purpose is to rip and tear. The biggest reason beyond the myomers the refit is dragging out a bit is the work being done to give it a unique head. One more akin to that of a wolf. Somewhere I am certain a ghost bear is howling in rage. Too bad. It might not have quite the same kind of range damage that the normal Kodiak does but she will be a pack hunter that can rush down just about anything. With the ERPPCs allowing out to strike out afar and a medium laser volley to rake things up close. That is the general gist of it.
It may not be the smartest of builds here in the galaxy. But... I was not paid for thinking before, just messing up other people and I am not about to change that now.
💛❤️🎱🌼🔮 (I have included both of the latter as you are both of the Clans and the Inner Sphere in a sense, much like myself.) - Star Captain (CJF)/Colonel (SLDF) Hazen, @is-the-battlemech-cool-or-not
I think I would label myself slightly more of the inner sphere. Largely because I have not seen any clan try to hire us. I do not know if my spheroid brother and sisters in arms are willing to accept it. Regardless.
💛What do you currently pilot?
Since I am currently between mechs as it were. I will give you a choice Hazen. I can speak of the first mech I was assigned to in my career that I had a choice to refit to my liking. A cataphract. Or I can speak to my future ride of choice, a Kodiak.
But after that... Strap yourself in Colonel. Get comfortable and get something to drink. We are going to be here for a while.
♥️ Do you have a preference for ballistic, energy, missile, or other (e.g. melee/EMP/EW) weapons?
I quite like the PPCs. The impact, the range. The damage. It is a classic for a reason. It did not combine well with me for a while as for a long time, following the succession wars of course, most PPCs were of models that had hard safety locks for close ranges. That you had to override and even then it caused about as much EM interference for yourself as it did for the poor sod you hit.
I like most weapon systems I have had the chance to use. To find their niche and their use and to get the most out of is a fun experience and forever will be.
Now what I am really good with though has always been to use the mech as a weapon. Punching, kicking even wrestling. I have always been really good at making a mech move in ways they were not really meant to. Probably. Besides the Steiner barbarians and the odd Kuritan how many mechs have been designed to engage other mechs in close quarters combat like that. It gets a bit brutal though. Not for the faint of heart.
🎱 For Inner Sphere commoners, what do you think of nobility and the neo-feudal system?
I suppose there is something to be said of heridary rule having a use of some manner in a place where communication and travel is a bit of an endevaour. As is maintaining everything to allow for it. It does need a level of stability that maybe elections every so few years cannot quite give.
But it nevertheless invites people to believe they are the masters of all they survive and can suffer no ill consequence for anything they do save to annoy someone with a finer blood than themselves. More often than not it falls upon mercenaries to humble them. To let them know that if you hire people to fight a war and then do not pay them, they will turn their weapons on you. Which such fools as rulers Sun Tzu's art of war falls into very sharp focus. A book of the most basic lessons of war.
🌼 For Inner Sphere characters, what do you think of the Clans, in whole or in part?
Speaking of the most basic lessons of war... The Clans when I was first told of them I thought that was great. It sounded like a dream almost. A society where the people who fights wars gets to be the ones to make the decisions? Where you skills as a warrior could carry you through ranks without the requirement of important parents. That fought with honour and avoided civilian loss of life. That made the most of everything they had. I was wrong.
The benefit of their meritocracy is that anyone with enough skill for battle can rise through the ranks and become a leader. The immediate drawback is that anyone with enough skill for battle can rise through the ranks and become a leader.
Despite being born as a Dragoon and of two members of clan wolf. Clan wolf was reluctant to consider me a member. When I was captured in the outer rims of the inner sphere by them I was held as a bondswoman which did not make a lot of sense considering blood tests quickly revealed that I was part of clan wolf by blood. Nevertheless I was put forward to assist with operation REVIVAL seeing as I had experience with the inner sphere. But they did not listen despite my best efforts. Calling me dezgra, freebirth and surat whatever the hell that was. Over and over and over. Despite every time I told them there would be an insurgency. That was the case. Ever time I said the logistic lines were vulnerable they were destroyed. Too busy and occupied with proving their own honour and their own worth that they could never see a bigger picture. Except for a few select ones. I gravitated towards them and with just a little bit of help I was able to attain a position to actually do something useful. To get back to being a mechwarrior. Even got a bloodname that I do not care to use anymore. I like Hoshi better because it is mine.
Perhaps they are better now? I do not know. I am sorry if that sounds very vitriolic. My experiences were not the best let's just say. I have a lot of pent up frustration and noone in the inner sphere can quite comprehend how I feel.
I respect many clan warriors and would herald them as heroes in their own right in many cases. Many I am sure I can even deem to call friend and ally. Now and perhaps forever.
The Clans are not without merit even after all of what I just said. Generally speaking the lower castes of multiple clans are well tended to. Given a modicum of freedom to enjoy their life even if it also comes with a duty. It varies from clan to clan of course. I do like the idea that combat is not to take place in settlements and to not waste resources. It is a nice ideal. There is one fascination I actually have with the Clans. The ghost bears I have been told values family and also encourage their warriors to pursue some sort of craft. Some sort of hobby. Even art. I like that. It is a good philosophy.
It is as far as I am concerned a flawed system based on violence. I do not hate it. But I realized that it could not fit me. Or perhaps the ideal I had in my head simply did not survive scrutinity and disappointment and resentment festered.
🔮 For Clan characters, what do you think of the Inner Sphere, in whole or in part?
But speaking of flawed systems based on violence... The inner sphere is not much better. Beholden to money and the interest of the rich and powerful. Usually nobles of some variety. Some parts of the inner sphere claim to be a democracy. The rule of people... Sometimes it feels that would simply make it worse. Somehow. The powers that be of the different successor states appear almost as willing to terrorize their own citizens into submission as much as the enemy half the time.
I will never forget that I was told, but a Davion liaison officer to consider the Ares Conventions as more of a guideline than rule as they all had been renounced since the first succession war. And it had taken at least two such for them to figure out that if you blight planet with viruses to as to make them inhospitable for human life, ANY LIFE, or to bathe worlds in nuclear hellfire... There is not all that much to conquer.
But of course. Once you get past all that. People of the inner sphere all do have a reasonable chance at living a life of some freedom and pursuit of happiness with a chance at success. Depending on their ambitions of course.
And so. I am somewhat stuck between all of it, as a mercenary I am able to find my own way. To live free and be who I desire. Beholden only to the almighty C-Bill. Luckily there is plenty of C-Bills availible for somebody able to shoot of the kill count paint on a mech from a kilometer away. Maybe the Dragoon blood runs far too deep in me eh?

Docking of the new 20 ton Russian MLM Nauka/3R science laboratory module today (29 July) to the SM Zvezda nadir port recently vacated by the DC-1 Pirs/4R docking compartment which Nauka has replaced.
Nauka which was backing up to the station performed two pitch manoeuvres during approach in order to perform two extra retro firings to slow it's approach. Then at the last moments cosmonaut Lt Col Alex Novitsky had to take over control using the TORU remote control system to manually fly and dock the massive module gently to the station (after the automated KURS system aborted I think, think I heard an abort announced).
Nauka in addition to housing experiments both internally and externally contains extra life support systems, an extra toilet, an extra crew sleeping compartment, allowing the Russian ISS contingent to be increased to three cosmonauts and a fuel transfer system (allowing supply craft to refuel the station) and the capability to provide altitude control for the whole station using a special set of thrusters. At its forward end (now lower earth pointing end) it has an airlock hatch and two more docking ports. One will initially be used for Progress and Soyuz docking's and the other for the attachment of an equipment airlock (currently stored externally on the Rassvet module waiting for Nauka). The new module will also be home to the European Robotic Arm which like the Canadian built SSRMS station arm, of which ERA resembles a smaller version, will be able to 'inch-worm' its way across various grapple/connection points across the Russian section. That has to be unwrapped from covers during an EVA before it can operate though. Pics: NASA TV

Rear-facing weapons always seem like damned if you do, damned if you don't. I never used them in situations where I had them; in situations where I wanted to use them, they weren't there. A real "Oh Shit" weapon.
In theory, the tight avenues of a Brawling range, like those encountered in City Fighting or tight canyons, leave a pilot open to being flanked or out-positioned, especially by a cavalier mech with jump jets, VTOL, and face-moving vehicles with a nasty surprise like Saladins.
Having them dedicated to rear-facing means you can still engage forward-facing targets for the full ALPHA, and still fire behind you if something tries to catch you unaware. Something you can't do if you flip them around; of course, you could only do one arm, but half a payload on your intended target can leave you without an arm if you were in such a situation anyway.
The Savage Wolf Prime already has forward-facing SSRMs, so it's not like the Ammunition is wasted as is, as they share the bins in both Torsos. Also, they will only fire with a confirmed lock to hit, given that they are Streaks, so the ammo question is already a little moot. Streaks save a lot of ammo, being picky like that. SRMs will ruin most things every day if both hit.
In some ways, it makes more sense than the SLDF's Quickdraws having Double Medium Lasers in the rare facing, given it was a hot running mech with Jumps before you needed an "Oh shit" weapon.
You have 100,000,000 C-Bills and a crack-team of MechTechs to make your dream mech come to life What do you build
(Full access to anything whenever/wherever for convenience's sake)
Are we building like a mech or an army of one type of mech? cause thats a LOT of c-bills doc.
(Also sowwy for not answering sooner :( )
