Weekly Nest Notes: Welcome E15 & E16!
Harriet and M15 were not about to give up on their nesting season and the opportunity to add to their majestic species.  In their true spirit of persistence and devotion, they succeeded in presenting their second clutch, Egg 3 and Egg 4. Harriet and M15 selflessly executed another round of incubating their treasured Eggs. They have extended their season well into the hotter months of the year and brave the seemingly unbearable conditions to continue on their mission.
Tumblr media
Harriet and M15 watched and listened as Egg 3 showed signs of hatching. The first great challenge for the Eaglets started a few days before a hole or PIP became evident on the shell. From that point, the process may take 48 hours or longer as in these cases.  Much strength and energy are exerted by chick with resting time in between efforts to break out of their shell. E15  hatched on 3-31-2020 at 5:29 am. Egg 4 had a PIP that very morning and E16 hatched on 4-2-2020 at 6:48 pm. The little miracles E15 and E16 made their grand entrances into the world.
Harriet and M15 began the nourishment and enrichment of their feisty E15 and E16 who are very active and energetic. They began to establish a so-called pecking order right out of the shell. Their vigorous tussles will serve them well as they grow and learn survival skills to last their lifetimes. These timeless miracles never cease to enthrall all who observe. Bravo, Eagle Family!  Nest Notes by dadsjazz.Header photo SWFEC camera

Special Edition Nest Notes: E14 Soaring the Heavens
The Bald Eagle has long been celebrated by humankind for their strength, wisdom, hope, courage, and loyalty.  They have been held in reverence by many religions and cultures as an integral part of their traditions and spirituality. Magnificent flights take the Eagle to the highest heights among and above the clouds. This ability has been believed to create balance in their lives, allowing powerful vision while keeping a strong connection to the earth. Their survival commands them to live life in the moment and adapt to unforeseen circumstances. They fearlessly focus on the continuation of their species and are deeply devoted to their mates and offspring.
Tumblr media
E14 was a bright and joyful addition to Harriet and M15’s world, and over these few short weeks captured the hearts of all. E14 was an intelligent and energetic Eaglet with a lot to peep about. Harriet and M15 took exceptional care of their cherished baby. In the blink of an eye, it became obvious that E14 sustained an injury resulting in blood loss. Harriet stood by E14 on the nest and M15 checked on them every so often. It seemed as if they knew something was not quite right with their precious little one.  E14 made the final journey to the Great Eagle Spirit in the early morning hours on Wednesday, January 15. Soar strong and brave through the Heavenly realm to watch over us all, E14. Tribute to E14 by dadsjazz

Weekly Nest Notes: Heading Upward (Jan. 14, 2020)
Harriet and M15 continue nurturing E14 on their fast track of growing strong and tall. Close to 4 weeks old, E14’s wingspan is nearly 2 feet and their little tail wiggles at almost 2 inches long. Upward and outward is the direction of E14’s stature as they are over a foot tall, weighing 5 to 6 pounds with a beak and feet that are almost fully grown. E14 is now able to be viewed from the ground with head and wings at times above the nest rails. Sleep and nourishing food deliveries by Mom and Dad enable great growth spurts. E14 excels in all areas under the care of devoted Eagle parents.
E14 has accomplished many milestones and is working on more. E14 gains balance and strength scooting around the nest and taking a few steps. Getting control of their big feet and scratching an itch is a welcome benefit. E14 preens their new thermal down which encourages the progression of juvenile feathers beginning to emerge. E14 slept in the nest overnight by themselves with Mom and Dad perched above keeping a watchful eye on their not so little baby.
Tumblr media
E14 curiously explored the nest looking for items of interest. E14 picked up and moved sticks and nesting with their beak and nibbled on food items imitating Mom and Dad.  E14 bravely slept on the nest rails enjoying the cooler breezes. Time spent there builds courage and allows E14 to learn the boundaries. Moving into the next growth period, E14 will gain more strength to begin standing and walking upright. They will start to engage the coordination of their feet and beak for self-feeding. E14 flap, flap, flaps their spreading wings as they build muscles for a future flight. In a few short weeks, E14 will be close to adult size. Harriet and M15 focus on enriching their sprouting E14 keeping them safe, secure and satiated as they head upward and onward. Weekly Nest Notes: Exchanging Places (March 10)
Harriet and M15 kept up their efficient exchanges incubating their treasured Eggs through the week. As one arises to stretch and take a break from nest duty the other is on the spot to take their turn. They while away the hours on the nest watching the comings and goings in the vicinity. This is their second go-around of incubating Eggs this Season and in a few weeks, their consistent commitment will reveal the fruits of their labor.
Tumblr media
Harriet and M15 appear especially sensitive to visitors in the territory. They belted out vocal warnings to a beautiful Sub-Adult Eagle who landed in the nest tree top perch and quickly got the message that their presence was unwanted.  Fly-through only, no stopping is their shout out to the Osprey, Hawk and all other birds in their territory. The Starlings enjoy perching in the nest tree singing their songs but they are too small to pose a threat. They build their nests under Harriet and M15’s nest at times stealing materials from them.
Tumblr media
Harriet and M15 managed to spend moments together to keep their bond intact and solid. They spend their time away from the nest soaring the skies, hunting for a meal and enjoying a refreshing bath. They take their roles in stride faithful to each other and their intentions of raising another generation of Eagles.  Nest Notes by dadsjazz

Weekly Nest Notes: Growing Strong (Jan. 1)
Harriet and M15 provided a wide variety of food for growing E14 over the first week in the big new adventure. Fish, fowl, and mammals were stacked in the nest pantry as Mom and Dad took turns feeding E14 and feasting on the “nestovers” themselves. Harriet likes to lead at Family dinner time taking the items offered from M15 and then feeding E14. All the attention and good eats equal rapid growth as E14 approaches 2 weeks old. Little bobbling head E14 now sits upright tall and strong, peeping for and grabbing bites of food until good and stuffed. In a record time, E14 is nodding off and drifting to sleep and sprout.
Tumblr media
Nature’s workings follow a path that is not always easy to understand. Egg 2’s time has come and gone and for reasons unknown, will not hatch. Harriet and M15’s purpose in life is to procreate and now they each will come to terms with Egg 2 in their way. They may continue care for Egg 2 or, as observed, M15 will cover it with grass and Harriet will uncover  it to incubate. It could be removed or just buried to become part of the nest. Living day to day, moment by moment and accepting what comes their way is the reality of life in the wild. Harriet and M15’s immediate task is the nurturing and nourishing E14 to ensure the best opportunity for survival.
E14 is extremely alert and takes in all the activity around the nest. E14 is very mobile scooting about the nest bowl trying to climb up that steep slope to a new level of freedom. E14 is starting to preen new down feathers emerging that will help regulate body temperature. Mom and Dad provide shelter from the rain and shade from the warm mid-day sun.  Harriet and M15 shared some special minutes perching, strengthening their bond, and admiring their smart and curious E14.  All efforts are focused on the guidance and encouragement of E14 in their journey through Eagle life. Weekly Nest Notes: Defend & Protect (Nov. 5, 2019)
Harriet and M15 engage all their instincts pursuing the greater purpose of adding to their legacy. Their success depends on tried and true behaviors of defending and protecting their territory and  soon to be eggs and Eaglets. These sensitive times have them on high alert to all that happens in the area. Intruders were escorted away from the pasture and nest tree and the neighboring Eagle pair were reminded to stay away from the territory. Harriet slept in the nest overnight with M15 perched nearby to notify all that there is no vacancy here.
Harriet has become a homebody spending more and more time in the nest tree and vicinity. She perches, preens and sends out occasional vocal notices as she remains watchful. M15 makes frequent visits to the nest throughout the day bringing sticks and more soft nesting material. All the important elements are added to make the nest bowl comfy now that the outer rails are strong and sturdy. M15 loves to dig down deep in the nest bowl trying out the fit. Harriet arrives with her favorite greenery additions and they each move the materials around. Visits to the pond are regular activities they engage in together as one bathes and one stands watch. M15’s keen hunting skills keep Harriet well-fed and satisfied.
Harriet and M15 prepare for coming events fine-tuning the details to make sure all is in place. They are devoted to their goal standing together for the security of their valuable property, their future family and their beautiful life together. Nest Notes by dadsjazz.

Special Nest Notes: E14 is Here!
Harriet and M15 spent countless hours protecting and incubating their cherished Eggs. They each took long breaks away from their nest duties possibly knowing that hatch time was approaching. They may also have sensed their workload will ramp up once eaglets arrive. Feeding and tending to their growing babies requires a lot of energy. M15 made sure the pantry was stocked with fish in anticipation of the new arrivals.
Tumblr media
Harriet and M15 have realized their reward as E14 began the hatching process and completely emerged from the shell on December 19, 2019 at 12:03 pm. M15 was incubating at the time of the hatch and even took the half shell out of the nest. Once dried and fluffed up, E14 was raring to go and peeping away. Harriet came to the nest to see her sweet E14 and offered bites of fish. After a few wobbly, attempts E14 took in their first meal. Dad was eager to help feed the Little One, too. Mom and Dad both tenderly care for E14 and their precious egg together. E14 is feisty and focused on Mom and Dad’s actions, Eagle Eyes in the making.
Tumblr media
Harriet and M15 are exemplary parents to their offspring and devoted partners to each other, sharing all the responsibilities for their family. They both have added sticks and grasses for the nest. Harriet hunted and delivered prey and M15 had tremendous success hunting and fishing. M15 fed Harriet as she kept E14 and the Egg shielded from rainy conditions. They both vocally warned a Sub-Adult Eagle flying too close to the nest tree. They weathered the passing storms and maintained security for their priceless cargo. As of this writing, all are awaiting the hatching of Egg 2.  Nest Notes by dadsjazz.

Weekly Nest Notes: Countdown to Hatch (Dec. 10)
Harriet and M15 have been an efficient and unstoppable incubating team keeping their cherished Eggs in optimal condition. Soon it will be time for their new generation of Eaglets to break into the world. Mom and Dad welcome their rolls of nurturing and encouraging their new boisterous babies. They will then turn their focus to around the clock feeding and brooding of their hatchlings keeping them well fed, warm and protected.
Harriet and M15 may appear to be looking and listening and may feel movement and peeps from the chick working to free themselves from the egg. The break out process begins a few days before full emergence from the egg as they move around the interior scoring it with their egg tooth. Rest and a drying out period follows and like magic a fluffy, sweet-faced Eaglet is revealed, “squeeing” their arrival to the world.
Tumblr media
Harriet, but mostly M15 will begin to stock up the nest with fish and prey a few days before hatching. Hungry little beaks will be searching for a meal and will eat with voracious appetites. Mom and Dad take their turns  feeding as the little ones bob and weave to grab a bite, hence the name ”bobblehead”. Gaining strength to  control their fuzzy little heads takes a few days for them. Once out of their shells, they will sprout up like weeds well on their journey with incredible parents to guide them and keep them safe. Anticipation grows as all countdown the last few days to hatching. Nest Notes by dadsjazz.

Weekly Nest Notes: Perfecting the Timing (Dec. 3)
Harriet and M15 have perfected the timing of their nest duty exchanges. One flies in with grass, sticks or a prey item and the other is ready to leave without missing a beat. They spend countless hours carefully rolling and incubating their treasured Eggs. Watching the skies and territory, preening and pulling grasses closer are done while protecting the Eggs which are about halfway to the hatching their precious Eaglets.
Harriet and M15 engage in self-care during their free time, keeping themselves clean, strong, and nourished. Their chosen home territory provides a beautiful pond, ample hunting grounds, and wonderful perches to view all the comings and goings. Grasses and sticks are brought daily keeping the nest fluffed up and warm.
Tumblr media
Security is their utmost concern as Harriet chased after the sub-adult following M15 to the nest. She wasn’t about to surrender the food gift M15 was bringing. The stealthy owls pay their occasional night fly-by and are quickly deterred as M15 keeps his Eagle eyes ready.  Harriet and M15 adapt to their lives day by day, moment by moment and are ready for any perceived threats. Their survival and that of their young depends their constant awareness and careful diligence. Nest Notes by dadsjazz.

Final Weekly Nest Notes: The Next Chapter
Nesting Seasons each unfold in unique ways. There have been many successful outcomes and many that were faced with challenges. Nature at times can be harsh and other times be very satisfying to observe. Season 7 has been very rewarding and inspiring. Harriet and M15 nurtured and nourished their precious Eaglets over the months to become skilled and intelligent Juvenile Eagles, readying them to be off on the next chapter of Eagle Life.
E13 eagerly learned the art of the steal in securing food and found their inner fierceness standing their ground. E13 gained the courage and confidence to make the decision to start life as a Juvenile out in the big world well prepared for survival. The last sighting of E13 was April 25.
E12 pushed the limits of their stay in the territory lingering a while longer. Mom and Dad’s patience and perseverance provided sustenance for E12 while practicing hunting by chasing the crows to steal their food. E12 was also mastering fishing using perfect form while sweeping the surface of the ponds.  E12’s vigor and spirit carried them to the wild beyond and was last seen on May 16.
Harriet and M15 may have a sense of great accomplishment and pride in their grand endeavor rearing two amazingly energetic and impressive Juvenile Eagles. They make their transition from the constant focus on their offspring to renewing and refreshing themselves and their unfailing bond to each other. They take time in the mornings to add sticks and materials to the nest and to make sure their valuable real estate is secure. They laze away the warm days perched in shady places and feast on abundant food. Harriet and M15’s well-deserved hiatus will energize and invigorate them for the next Season. Under the watchful eye of the Great Eagle Spirit may The Eagle Family be protected and the new chapters be fruitful.

Weekly Nest Notes: Traveling to Greatness
Harriet and M15 have had a successful Nesting Season bringing new life into the world. They nurtured their offspring while preparing them for Eagle life. E12 and E13 grabbed ahold of all the resources provided to them allowing their transformation into two stunning Juvenile Eagles. Their inherent abilities have been expanded upon under the guidance of exceptional Parents. Food, food and more food lessons have been ingrained in E12 and E13 since they broke into the world a few short months ago. They will continue to develop into fierce competitors and hunters. The day would come when these two phenomenal Juveniles would be off to practice and experience life on their own.
E13 perched with E12 on the attic branch for a long while before flying off on a venture that may have taken them to far away places.  E12 roosted with Mom and Dad in the Old Cam Tree that evening, E13 had not returned to the pasture.  M15 delivered breakfast to the ground by the pond which would usually entice E13 to join in. E12 enjoyed the first meal alone and took it to the nest to finish. There was an eerie calmness in the pasture as E12 flew from place to place possibly looking for E13. As a few more days passed the reality that E13 may have departed on their voyage was becoming more apparent.
E12 was off in the early morning exploring the areas farther from the territory. M15 delivered food and seemed surprised that no one was there to take it. E12 did not return home that evening. Harriet and M15 arrived at the nest at dusk, tended to some housekeeping, rearranged sticks, and removed some old bones. At daybreak, Harriet and M15 began their early morning activities of bringing sticks to the nest and to another tree in the west pasture. This was their behavior in the past signaling that the Season was indeed at an end. Then, as quickly as E12 departed, they arrived at the treetop perch and took a bath in their beloved pond. It was a welcomed sight to see Mom, Dad, and E12 roosting on the Old Cam Tree one more time. Harriet and M15 appear to take it all in stride. There are no absolutes, no routine and no guarantees in their lives, only their survival from moment to moment.  E12 may decide in a split second to fly off on their own just as E13 did. May they both be graced by the Great Eagle Spirit to soar to the highest heights on strong thermals and to find an abundance of food on their travels to greatness. Nest Notes by dadsjazz.

Weekly Nest Notes: First Flights of Freedom
E12 and E13 have taken their first flights away from the nest tree and discovery and adventure have been on their agenda every day since. E12 executed an impressive fledge flying courageously with a perfect landing on the pasture snag.  After soaking in all the new views and feeling the freedom, E12 flew back to the nest tree trunk with another perfect landing. E13’s behavior of pushing and flapping at E12’s return to the nest was not very welcoming.  Moments later they were both perched closely together on the attic branch. They waver between wanting to belong and defending their space. After an event-filled day, E13 roosted on an outer branch of the nest tree while E12 returned to the nest for a peaceful sleep. Enter the pesky Owl who did what Owls do in the darkness of night and buzzed E13 from the tree branch. E13 recovered and landed on a lower branch under the nest. At first light E13 confidently climbed and flap hopped back up the branch to nest level making the easy jump to the security of the nest.
E12 and E13 spent the next day discovering new branches in the nest tree, performing daring high hovers and filling up on all the food Dad delivered.  E12 overshot the veranda branch and was holding on while hanging there. Mom came to see what the commotion was about causing E12 to let go and land on a branch under the nest. E12 then flap hopped back up to the nest as E13 had done earlier.
E13 greeted the new day with excitement and energy and took the first leap to freedom flying to a front pine and eventually to the pasture snag. E13 relished in all the sights from new perspectives. E13 aced the landing on the return flight to the nest.  E12 embarked on their second full flight around the pasture and explored the front pine tree branch. With their curiosity and sense of adventure ignited, both Fledgelings flew with amazing skill, sought out new perches and soared the skies around the pasture and beyond. E12 was on the fast track gliding to the ground, finding the pond and even taking a bath, all within a few days of fledging. E13 also discovered the ground as the two frolicked at the pond bank, perched on the fence and walked along the driveway as their siblings before them. E12 and E13 continually break through new milestones as they proceed on their journey to independence and freedom.  Harriet and M15 observe E12 and E13 and may have a sense of their success rearing their two exceptional Juveniles.
