[ad_1] NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir was on Wednesday appointed 'Mentor' by the Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders, an Indian Premier League team that won its two titles in 2012 and 2014 under his capable guidance.Gambhir had led KKR from 2011 to 2017 before leaving the team to lead the Lucknow Super Giants as their "Mentor" for the last two seasons.Despite making it to the play-offs in both seasons, Lucknow was unable to advance, which is why the team hired Justin Langer, a former Australian opener and T20 World Cup winner, as coach. After Langer was signed by the Sanjiv Goenka-owned team, Gambhir's departure was inevitable.Even though Gambhir and LSG both adamantly denied the transfer for the longest time, there was a lot of chatter about it during a protracted meeting in the Mumbai house of the Bollywood superstar, and it eventually became true. The CEO of KKR, Venky Mysore, has revealed that Gambhir will work with head coach Chandrakant Pandit."I am not an emotional person and not many things move me. But this is different. This is back to where it all started. Today, there is a lump in my throat and fire in my heart as I think about slipping into that purple and gold jersey once again," Gambhir was quoted as saying in a press note issued by franchise."I am not only coming back to KKR but I am coming back to the 'City of Joy'. I am back. I am hungry. I am number 23. Ami KKR," the former India opener posted on X.On leaving Lucknow Super Giants, Gambhir posted:KKR's principal Shah Rukh Khan said: "Gautam has always been part of the family and this is our 'Captain' coming back home in a different avatar as a "Mentor"."He was sorely missed and now we all look forward to Chandu Sir and Gautam in instilling the never-say-die spirit and of sportsmanship they stand for, in creating magic with Team KKR."As an elected member of parliament, Gambhir has a tendency to prefer having his own team, having complete control over the procedures, and being willing to take the fallout. It will be interesting to observe the extent and domain of former Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar, who had a significant influence on strategic aspects pertaining to squad selection and combination, with Gambhir's return to his "spiritual home".Gambhir has always been the "Captain" of the ship, and KKR supporters would expect for a resurgence following a few uneven seasons. Kohli-Gambhir clash: Is their fine cost greater than that of their salary?
The BCCI has declared that Kohli as well as Gambhir are guilty of a Level 2 offense and has imposed an amount equal to 100 percent match fee on both of the players. Calculated using a pro-rata method and taking in Kohli’s annual income of around 15 crores, the cost for a match would be about 1.07 crore, and he could be penalized that amount for the Lucknow incident.
Tumblr media
The figure was calculated using 14 games played in an entire season. In the event that Royal Challengers Bangalore qualify for play-offs and advance further in the play-offs, the amount of a match fee would differ and depend on the number of games that are played by this franchise in the course of the season, as well as the division of its annual fee.
According to an estimation, Kohli is set to lose about one crore to the tune of Rs 1 crore in the incident of May 1. What happens if he does not? The answer is “No”. The procedure differs between franchises, but in the instance of Kohli and RCB, Cricbuzz can confirm that they will not need to share any IPL earnings. The management of the franchise will shoulder the responsibility. “Players put their bodies on the line for the team and we respect that and as a culture, we don’t cut the fine from their salaries,” an RCB source informed Cricbuzz.
The amount of money Gambhir receives is not disclosed, and the amount of Rs 25 lakh he receives as his fee for a single match is the subject of speculation. People who are familiar with the functioning of Lucknow Super Giants say the commercials between the franchise and its coach (Gambhir) are not divulged as it is entirely between Gambhir and the owner Sanjiv Goenka. One could conclude that even in the scenario of Gambhir and the match fee is not likely to come from his income. The franchise has been set to pay.
Similar systems are common in other franchises too and, in some cases, all franchises, and one franchise has stated that they do not plan on cutting the match fees of an individual, even if the penalty is based on the slow over rate. However, in different teams players are required to pay for their indiscipline and also the captain for inability to finish all infractions in time. The suggestion came from the captain of one team that in the event of a late conclusion of a game the entire team had to pay the penalty collectively, however, it was rejected.
This is how the system of fines works in IPL The process is as follows: At the conclusion of every season the BCCI issues an invoice for all fines imposed on teams and the franchise then pays the fine. Whether to subtract it from a certain player’s salary is an internal decision of the team. However, when the franchise is taking responsibility in many cases, there is a sense that fines aren’t being used as deterrents. Most of the people made a suggestion to Kohli as well as Gambhir to end the word war between them.
New information puts Naveen in the spotlight
The new details that have been revealed about the incident do not show Naveen-Ul-Haq to be innocent. The Afghan cricketer, who has had a history of fighting in different leagues but most notably in the PSL as well, is thought to have hurled abuse towards Kohli who, as per his habit and a ‘banter’ at batsmen of the opposition while LSG were trying to score 127 for an advantage.
The moment of the flashpoint was in the 17th over, and Naveen’s behavior at that moment is extensively discussed in discussions in the IPL circles. The bowl delivered by Mohammed Siraj was disclosed as no ball as it bounced at him. This tense atmosphere carried on to post-match handshakes, which is how the situation heated.
Naveen has been fined a 50% of the match fees, which could amount to about 1.8 lakh if his salary of Rs 50 lakh per season.

Cricket: Expanded IPL returns to India with COVID curbs - Al Jazeera English
Galaxy of top names and two new franchises expand the world’s richest cricket competition to 10 teams for its 15th edition. The Indian Premier League returns for its biggest season on Saturday, with a galaxy of top names and two new franchises expanding the world’s richest cricket competition to 10 teams for its 15th edition. But crowds in the cricket-crazy nation will, initially at least, be limited to 25 percent capacity with group games restricted to four venues – one in Pune and three in Mumbai. The venues for the three playoff matches and the May 29 final are yet to be announced. International T20 greats such as Australia’s David Warner and England’s Jos Buttler will be back for two months of high-octane cricket, but fellow Englishman Ben Stokes and West Indies veteran big-hitter Chris Gayle are big names who will be missing. The teams will be divided into two groups of five, based on their previous IPL records, for a 70-match regular season that promises to be the first completed entirely in India since 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic. “This season is going to be with crowds and we are hoping to have full capacity soon,” Arun Dhumal, treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), told AFP news agency. “The new teams bring a lot of excitement and after the player auction, in a way, all the teams are new. There is a lot of new blood and we are hoping that it will be exciting for the players and the fans.” The 10 teams splurged $75m to buy 204 players in last month’s auction with Mumbai Indians bringing back Ishan Kishan for a whopping $2m. England batter Liam Livingstone was the most expensive overseas player, costing the Punjab Kings $1.52m to bolster their bid for a first IPL title. The two new teams, set up at a combined cost of a staggering $1.6bn, are Gujarat Titans, owned by United States venture capital fund CVC, and Lucknow Super Giants, backed by Indian tycoon Sanjiv Goenka. The Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians have been the most successful IPL team, winning a record five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Chennai Super Kings, led by veteran former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, are the defending champions and will open the season against Kolkata Knight Riders, owned by Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan, at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Saturday. The two-month extravaganza will see 74 matches in all with teams coached by some of cricket’s former greats including Australians Ricky Ponting and Tom Moody, Stephen Fleming of New Zealand and Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka. Debutants Gujarat Titans have snapped up highly-rated spinner Rashid Khan of Afghanistan, but the explosive pace of England’s Jofra Archer may not be on display for Mumbai Indians after he missed the Ashes in Australia with an elbow injury. Of the home superstars, Virat Kohli will be under pressure after stepping down as captain of India and enduring, by his lofty standards, a lean spell with the bat having not scored an international century since November 2019. Having tried and failed to win the IPL title for nine seasons as skipper of Royal Challengers Bangalore, “King Kohli” has also stepped aside with South Africa’s Faf du Plessis taking charge. “(Kohli) doesn’t look that confident but he also needs a bit of luck. I am sure you will enjoy the same Virat, batting very freely, very dominating,” Vijay Lokapally, a veteran journalist and a Kohli biographer, told AFP. “And it’s good if we expect him to excel every time, it speaks for the respect he has in the cricket world.” The tournament began in India in April last year but had to be suspended at the halfway point a month later as COVID-19 infections surged across the country. It eventually resumed in September in the United Arab Emirates, with Chennai Super Kings beating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final on October 15 in Dubai. The pandemic also forced the IPL to be played in the UAE in 2020. Follow Al Jazeera English: source Read the full article
