The origin of the word “Baloch” is unclear, and historians have posited several theories. Some believe “Baloch” is derived from “Belus,” a divine Babylonian ruler. Others propose “Baloch” is derived from the Median term “brza-vaciya” meaning an aggressive, animated or loud manner of speaking. While our exact origins are unclear, our ancestry is traced to Aleppo, Syria. We predominantly reside in the Southeastern edge of the Iranian plateau with a majority of our clans, tribes and communities residing in the provinces of Balochistan and Sindh in Pakistan, as well as parts of Iran and Afghanistan. Recent migrations in the last three decades form a growing Baloch diaspora that can be found throughout Europe, North America, Middle East and East Africa working in a variety of sectors and industries.

The Magsi clan, of which I am a daughter, resides in central Balochistan, in the Jhal Magsi District. Our clan elders and youth are spread out in various parts of Pakistan as well as abroad. Though the dominant religion practiced amongst our Magsi clan is Islam, we have a minority of Hindu Magsi clan members as well. Sufi culture and ancient shrines can be found throughout the district. We speak a variety of languages such as Balochi, Sindhi and Saraiki, as well as English, Urdu and Farsi. I have fond memories of communally having Sajji (whole lamb roasted underground) on our ancestral lands of Jhal Magsi, while partaking in important traditions, cultural dances and sacred rituals.
