Sarfaraz Khan Handed Test Cap By Anil Kumble. Father Can't Control His Tears
It was a huge moment for Sarfaraz Khan as the 26-year-old batter was handed his debut ahead of the third Test match between India and England in Rajkot on Thursday. Sarfaraz enjoyed an exceptional run of form in the domestic circuit over the last couple of years and he was handed his Test cap by legendary spinner Anil Kumble just before the toss. With Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul all missing out, Sarfaraz will partner with Rajat Patidar and fellow debutant Dhruv Jurel in the middle order. Sarfaraz's father was present at the ground and he could not control his tears during the ceremony.
Tumblr media
India won the toss and elected to bat against England in the third Test of the five-match series.
We're going to bat first. We've made some changes, made four changes. Some injuries and some guys coming back from the last game. Two debutants. Siraj and Jadeja are back. Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar miss out. Looks a good pitch, better than the last two we've played on. Rajkot is known to be a good pitch but it'll deteriorate as it goes. The guys have stood up and done the job for the team when it was needed. The next three Test matches will be as exciting as the first two. Need to keep our focus here and see how we can do well," India skipper Rohit Sharma said at the toss.
The series is locked at 1-1 as England captain Ben Stokes is appearing in his 100th Test.
India handed debuts to middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan, a heavy scorer in domestic cricket for Mumbai, and young wicketkeeper batter Dhruv Jurel, who will replace KS Bharat in the playing eleven.
England have brought back pacer Mark Wood in place of young spinner Shoaib Bashir.

World Cup Winner Kris Srikkanth Expresses Sympathy for Sarfaraz Khan Amid Squad Changes
Sarfaraz Khan made a highly anticipated Test debut earlier this year during India's home series against England, demonstrating his potential by amassing 200 runs across five innings. His performance included three half-centuries, with an average of 50 and a strike rate of 79.36. Despite his promising start, the return of key players like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant raises questions about his place in the Indian squad.
Tumblr media
As India prepares for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, which begins on September 19, the inclusion of these first-choice players suggests that Khan may not retain his spot in the playing XI. His continued presence in the squad, however, indicates he will be part of the team, though he might not feature in the opening Test in Chennai. Khan’s involvement in the India B squad for the Duleep Trophy's second-round fixtures, ending just days before the series starts, further underscores the likelihood of his exclusion from the first Test.
Kris Srikkanth, a former India opener and member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, has expressed his sympathy for Sarfaraz Khan's situation. On his YouTube channel, Srikkanth discussed how even a standout performance may not guarantee a permanent place in the squad, citing the example of Dhruv Jurel, who is expected to be sidelined with the return of Rishabh Pant.
“I feel bad for Sarfaraz Khan; even if you play well, sometimes a big player returns from injury and takes your spot—just look at how Rishabh Pant's return means Dhruv Jurel might have to sit out,” Srikkanth said. He emphasized the tough decisions faced by the team management, especially with high-profile players like KL Rahul also returning to the squad.
Srikkanth highlighted KL Rahul’s crucial role, noting his impressive performances in challenging conditions. “KL Rahul has proven himself in difficult conditions—be it in South Africa or Australia. For the upcoming series, including the tour to Australia, Rahul is an invaluable asset,” he explained.
Anirudh Srikkanth, Kris’s son, echoed these sentiments, acknowledging Rahul’s past achievements and their importance for the team’s future performances. “KL Rahul’s form leading up to the Australia tour will be crucial. It’s shaping up to be one of the greatest Test series of our time,” he added.
As the Indian squad gears up for the Bangladesh series, the balancing act between emerging talents like Sarfaraz Khan and established stars underscores the ever-evolving nature of international cricket.

Yashasvi Has Class, Sarfaraz Needs To Be Consistent, Players On Border Line Will Have To Fight For Their Place: Madan Lal
Tumblr media
Sarfaraz Khan: Former India all-rounder and 1983 World Cup-winning hero Madan Lal lavished praise on young batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan following their match-winning performances in the third Test against England in Rajkot. Yashasvi scored a phenomenal unbeaten double-century, the second of his Test career, while Sarfaraz made fifties in first and second innings in his debut match which India won comfortably. Speaking exclusively to IANS, Madan Lal said, "This young generation is quite good, they have a lot of experience playing first class cricket, IPL cricket, they are not scared of hitting the ball. If you look at their batting style, they are much more positive. "The way they play the shots, shows that they have a lot of confidence and that can only come when you play a lot of cricket. That’s the reason they are champions. The next generation is getting ready for India. He further said that "Yashasvi has the class following his consistent performance and Sarfaraz needs to keep performing in the same manner as his journey has just begun". Asked if it will be tough to manage the squad for the selectors when KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer will be back? The former all-rounder said, "I think, it’s a good sign, like you talk about KL, Virat and Shreyas, they have done a lot better. And these new kids have just started. "So, preference will be given to the established players. They have won a lot of games for the country, inside or outside. It’s a good thing we have a good pool of talent, and those who are on the border line, will have to fight for their place." Further enquiring about his thoughts on 'Bazball', he said, "That’s their (England) way of approaching the game. With this, they will win a few and they will lose a few. But that’s their style. Like their win in the first Test was amazing. But at the same time they have to be patient while playing on Indian wickets," he added. Read the full article

Sarfaraz Khan Breaks Silence On Run Out Mix-Up, Reveals Ravindra Jadeja's Message
In recent history, rarely has any player's international debut made so much noise as Sarfaraz Khan's. And there was every reason for it to happen. Sarfaraz Khan has been one of the most consistent performers in Indian domestic cricket over the past few years. However, the BCCI selectors took their time to rope him in the Indian cricket team. When it happened in Rajkot in the third India vs England Test, there were emotional scenes as his father and wife could not stop their tears. Sarfaraz Khan repaid their faith with a confident innings.
Tumblr media
Sarfaraz Khan scored a 48-ball half-century - the joint fastest by an Indian Test debutant in the post-independence era - before departing at 62 after a horrible run out mix up with Ravindra Jadeja. Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was frustrated after the dismissal.
Sarfaraz Khan opened up on his dismissal at the end of day's play.
"At times there is miscommunication, and it is a part of the game. Sometimes you get run out. Such kind of things happen," Sarfaraz Khan said in the post-match conference.
Sarfaraz Khan added that Ravindra Jadeja helped him throughout his innings. "I talked to him at lunch time. I am that type of batter who like to talk while batting about what is going on. So, I told Jadeja to keep talking to me while I bat. He supported me a lot today and spoke to me at lunchtime," Sarfaraz Khan said.
"He told me how the debutants feel and how he felt as a debutant. I was a bit nervous, especially when I played my first sweep and missed it. But he told me to take some time and it would be easy. I listened to him and tried implementing it.".
On what Jadeja said on the run out, Sarfaraz said: "He said there was a bit of miscommunication, but I said it's okay."
Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja made classical Test match hundreds while debutant Sarfaraz Khan announced his arrival on the big stage with a fluent half-century as India reached 326 for five at stumps on day one of the third Test against England in Rajkot on Thursday.
With India reduced to 33 for three inside the first hour of play, Rohit (131 off 196) and Jadeja (110 batting off 212) steered the ship through choppy waters with a 204-run partnership.
After the pair was separated, Sarfaraz (62 off 66) scored the joint fastest fifty by an Indian on debut to push India past the 300-run mark before he was tragically run out following a mix-up with Jadeja.
Standing in the dressing room, skipper Rohit was livid at the manner of Sarfaraz's dismissal and threw his cap in frustration. Jadeja was batting with nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav (1 batting) at close of play.

Looking At How England Went About In 1st Game; Practising Some Sweep Shots: KS Bharat
Tumblr media
Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium: With India 1-0 behind in the five-game Test series against England, wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat said the hosts’ have taken a cue from the visitors’ batting approach in the series opener at Hyderabad and have been making an effort to focus on sweep shots ahead of the second match at the ACA-VDCA Stadium starting on Friday. England secured a thrilling 28-run win over India in the series opener at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad last week, on the back of vice-captain Ollie Pope’s magnificent 196 and debutant spinner Tom Hartley’s 7-62 helping them emerge victorious from a situation of conceding a 190-run lead. In that game, England relied heavily on sweep and reverse-sweep as run-making options, something which the Indian batters have been practising at in their nets session in Visakhapatnam. "In our team meetings we spoke about the things we could have done better and yes, we certainly have few plans (for this Test match). (We are) definitely looking at the way how they went about the first game, playing some reverse (sweeps). That's something we have definitely worked on. “Playing in India, we play a lot of cricket on these tracks. It’s not that we don’t know how to sweep, reverse sweep or paddle-sweep, but on that particular day depending on the situation of the team, we as batters take our calls. It is very clear to us to bat with freedom. “We have also practiced the reverse sweeps before the first game as well. But while playing out in the centre, it is the batters’ individual plan. If the team demands us to play in a certain way then we are up to it. But individually we have separate set plans and looking to do well as a batting unit in this game," said Bharat in the pre-match press conference. Asked about any doubts in the dressing room post the loss to England, Bharat denied any such claims. "After the game, the atmosphere (in the team) is absolutely relaxed. They asked us not to panic. The instruction is very clear that it's a long Test series and we have played such series in the past. "We as individuals have to focus on good things. Things that we want to try, which we want to implement. We just want to play good cricket. That's the message from the captain and the coach," he said. India will be playing the second Test minus injured duo of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, along with Virat Kohli still on leave for personal reasons, meaning either of Rajat Patidar or Sarfaraz Khan could be handed a debut. Bharat admitted the trio’s absence leaves India short on experience, but pointed towards the team eager to learn from the mistakes in Hyderabad. "Their experience definitely counts, but if you look at youngsters like us, we have played a lot of domestic cricket and we have played a lot of cricket. It’s unfortunate for them to miss, but then our bench strength is always ready for a challenge on these kinds of tracks. The guys walking in, I am sure they will definitely do well and take it forward. “They (England) played really good shots (at Hyderabad). Credit goes to them, as they are allowed to play good shots. We did everything, like planning happening out in the centre. Rohit bhai was speaking to us, Jadeja was discussing on the lengths, lines, speeds. But then at the end of the day, if someone batted well, you have to give credit to them. “He (Ollie Pope) really batted us out in the second innings, but it happens. In cricket and in any sport you have to learn, accept and move forward with the learnings, which were there a lot for us and we are definitely taking it forward," said the wicketkeeper. Friday's match will also be Bharat’s first international match at his home ground in Visakhapatnam. Bharat was a ball-boy at the venue when MS Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 148 against Pakistan in an ODI game here in 2005 and began training with the Andhra Pradesh Ranji Trophy team as an 11-year-old. Bharat was also felicitated by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) on Thursday, with him being the third India Test-playing cricketer from the state after former chief selector MSK Prasad and veteran batter Hanuma Vihari. “Playing in front of your home crowd is definitely special. But I am keeping the emotions aside, as I am looking to this as any other Test game which you are playing for your country. There will be a lot of noise when you are playing for your country. There will be good noises, bad noises, but the thing is you will have to be in the present moment. "For me, it is a moment of pride about playing in front of your home crowd, but if you look at the bigger picture, there is a Test game which is supposed to be played and my whole focus and our whole focus is definitely on that. Yes, it’s an overwhelming feeling, but you have to let it sink and focus on the Test game," he concluded. Read the full article
