Tyler Skaggs Tribute Night

In the Los Angeles Angels' first home game since Tyler Skaggs' death, reminders of the late pitcher seemed to appear everywhere Friday.

All of his teammates donned his No. 45 and his name on the back of their jerseys. The Angels unveiled a mural of Skaggs in right-center field prior to the game. His mother, Debbie, threw an emotional ceremonial first pitch -- a perfect strike. The Angels tossed a combined no-hitter and won 13-0 against the Mariners.

It was the 11th no-hitter in Angels history. Skaggs wore No. 11 at Santa Monica High School.

Mike Trout, who sported Skaggs' 45 during the All-Star Game earlier this week, drilled the first pitch he saw for a two-run homer in the first inning, part of a seven-run frame for the Halos. The blast went 454 feet, a fitting tribute to 45.

"This was definitely for him and he was definitely watching over us tonight," Trout told MLB Network after the game.

"To go out there with 45 on your back to honor him, wearing Trout and then his number, and then we all thought it would be great to put Skaggs on the back with his number," Trout continued. "We know for sure he was looking down on us. He was up there smiling. We’re going to keep playing for him this season and the rest of my career. I can’t ask for a better friend."

Seven Angels runs in the first. Thirteen runs total. Skaggs would have celebrated his 28th birthday Saturday, 7/13, and Michael Peña finished the no-hitter by retiring Mallex Smith -- the 28th Mariner to bat.

On July 13, 1991 -- the day of Skaggs' birth -- the Orioles tossed a combined no-hitter in Oakland. It was the last time a combined no-no took place in Skaggs' home state.
