Scott Fraser Ibiza Voice Interview
Scott Fraser is a veteran of the alternative dance music scene, having a say in everything from 80's acid house to today's dark disco and slo-mo techno, releasing on Andy Blake's World Unknown and Mr Andrew Weatherall's Bird Scarer imprint. Very much influenced by Chicago house and Detroit techno he has recorded for seminal labels like Emissions, Black Nation and Wave music. Today he runs his own Crimes Of The Future label with Timothy Fairplay.
1. The Pixies inspired some of biggest bands/artists of the past 20 years - Radiohead, U2, Nirvana, even David Bowie cite them as major influences. Do you think there is such a parallel in the dance music world - where one act has spawned so many imitators?

Lee Perry showing and proving that the studio could and should be an instrument in its own right.
2. You’ve lived through a few early rave days in the UK, which is often regarded as one of the most exciting periods in music culture. Do you romanticise about living through a different music era?
There is always current and invigorating and interesting. One could put on the rose tinted spectacles and only look back, but then if I did that I wouldn't still be in the studio...I'd be at home romanticising over old records and missing out on all the decent new ones.
3. Dance music has repackaged and regurgiatated trends in disco, mininal and now deep house - a loose 20 year cycle emerging. By my clock we’re overdue a resurgence of shoe gazing indie dance. What style of music would you like to see re-popularised?
 4. Is there ever such a thing as original? All music borrows from something else, be it art, literature, surroundings or other music. I do hope your clock is wrong about that though...
5. I’m sending you to a desert Island - that island is Ibiza, and it’s full of malleable young minds. Give us 3 tunes to brainwash them into your own vision of the island.

Mr fingers: Amnesia (whole album) (Jack Traxx)

Mad Mike: The Illuminator (UR)

Legowelt: Deputy's first hood patrol (Hidden Hawaii)
6. If you could assemble your dream band for your Crimes Of The Future label - a kind of Cream for electronic dance music - who’d be in it?

Me and Timothy Fairplay.
7. When you're writing a tune you like to incorporate a live element as much as possible - do you think the tools of trade nowadays have made people lazy?
Tools are very much in the hands of the user, you'll never find a lazy craftsman.
8. If you had the choice and could wave a magic wand, would you do away with computers?
Nope
9. I like listening to 80’s pop music, Tears for Fears, Queen, Kate Bush etc, do you have any guilty pleasures?
Beaverton Gamma Ray, but it's deadly on the snoring.
 10. What pieces of equipment could you never part with?
Definitely the outboard gear so my 301 Chorus echo.
11. Which period of dance music is your favourite and why?
The here and now.
12. Do you actively look for new artists for your label, or is it designed solely for Tim and you?
The general rule of thumb is if we like it and would play it at the club then it's on the shortlist for release. Obviously there are only so many records you can put out in a year so then we need to be a bit more ruthless and make a decision.
I guess we have been somewhat fortunate up to now that we have been given great music by friends who we know that's perfect for the label.
"White of the eye" our latest release from me is the first full EP I've done for crimes but I'm sure there will be another one coming along at some point.
13. What are your gig highlights for this coming summer?
Bloc festival Heading back to the U.S. Another tour brewing further afield that I can't talk about yet... Crimes of the future Glasgow/ London (Yes London finally...) Shapes alfresco warehouse party in July Bodyhammer London
13. If you could remix any track - what would it be?
Sadly an unanswerable question I'm afraid, too many to choose from.... I always take them individually as they come along.
