Script-Writing - Current Beats and Dialogue research
After I read through some scripts to help with the scrip-writing essay, I established my beats for when I’m at with my idea for the scene with Impulse and Ego talking in the city and interacting with the city’s environment, the murder and the aftermath with Ego waking up in his room feeling like he had a bad dream.
Beats
- Arc, Impulse is growing more and more urge to murder someone really close to Ego in order to try and protect him from being too submissive and obsessed with these celebrity like characters. Since Impluse has Ego attached inside of him at all times, they have an argument back and fourth with each other like one character is talking to themselves where it leads to Impluse making Ego lose control in the discussion by making him pass out from the lack of control he has over his body when it’ Hyde that everyone sees.
- What are the characters trying to achieve, Ego is trying to prevent as little violence possible where as Impluse wants to dish it out for the greater good
- What’s standing in their way, For Impluse, it’s Ego trying to talk him out of it as well as being in public eye too
- The Balance of Power between characters, Impluse has so much more control of Ego’s body as he literally inherits it as Ego more so it’s the life of the body and can’t do too much suspended in place inside of Impulse
- Where are my characters, (Ego) vulnerable and worried, (Impluse) Opportunistic and displacing
- Where are they in the end, (Ego) wakes up in bed to see his favourite celeb’s head at the end of his bed (Impluse), scattered all across the floor in pieces beyond recognisable
Beats of my Scene (Order)
- Ego inside of Impluse’s Body start to conversate about their bodies and how they work having this being the first time they’ve gone through this process of Ego’s rage creating Impluse
- They’re interrupted by one of the celebrities literally just by themselves walking in the city which intrigues Impluse from the opportunity at stake that it could lead to Ego getting revenge
- Ego doesn’t like the really bad idea of Impluse killing her as shes been such an influential figure to him which Impluse doesn’t sees and begins to make Ego lose consciousness over time causing him to pass out in his body
- What happens next leads to Impluse committing murder upon the celebrity in the cyberpunk world
- The next morning, it cuts to Ego waking up from his bed really unsure what happened last night as he’s unsure if it was a dream or not
- This is soon told to him from how there is metal scattered across his floor with a decapitated head of Roxy looking straight at his eyes.
I think with these beats, they’re very place-holder at the moment as I want to explore character dialogue a bit more and visual language before I think about writing for my essay. After that, I’ll hopefully feel much more confident with writing the script out having this extra bit of knowledge/research as well as making a new set of beats to work from.
Looking into writing the dialogue, I would love to write in the lines of the back to fourth nature of Eddie Brock and Venom from ‘Venom’ as the chemistry between the characters is very similar to mine where there’s a confused person inside of the other and the other being is a lot more sinister and aware of his surroundings although curious about what the real world has to offer. If I was to write the full screenplay, I would imagine the two characters developing the same kind of way as they do in the film except my characters would pass away of feeling too good for the world.
The clips I’ve chosen showcase this dialogue are when they first interact with other in the movie as well as their last interaction to show how much they’ve developed from where they started out. In terms of the scene however, I want to aim for a more of a in-between of Venom at the beginning and the ending of the film when he first arrives in the city as he’s murderous feeling but is fascinated at the same time with human life. As for Ego, he would be more like how Eddie is nervous and not quite sure what’s really happening with the whole situation mixed in with being narcissistic for the other people around him and the things he takes for granted in the city.

Whilst not looking at the dialogue side of things, this animated short details how I imagine Impulse interacts with the world and understands the humanity of the human population in the city mainly when he looks at the holograms and develops a small bond over them. The character ‘Bastion’ from the short acts very curiously with nature around him as he’s slowly taking in his surroundings for the first time almost like he’s finally at peace with himself. However when the woodpecker starts pecking, he turns into a combat protocol losing his slow movements he had before and becoming very destructive around his surroundings. This is the same kind of direction I would like to take with Impluse as he respects and love the natural world but has such a short temper when the idea of idols or celebs come into picture.

Overall, I feel happy that I have a rough draft of my beats ready for the essay that I could work alongside with as well as understanding how my characters should act and behave. I think once I’ve established my beats a bit more, I’ll feel happy with the script writing process for the essay.

Character Design and Script Writing - Cyberpunk 2077 Case Study - 29/12/2020
For today’s research for both projects, I wanted to make a case study for a game I feel very much influenced by in terms for the aesthetics and designs for the Character Design project as well as the background atmosphere and visualization for the script towards the script-writing essay. I was fortunate enough to be provided a copy of the game to play it to experience what it’s like to explore these areas as well as well as having a book looking at the extensive lore that the game provides as well as artwork from the game.
Tumblr media
From playing the game, your offered a series of roles that you can start yourself choosing from Nomad, Street Kid and Corporative roles. Each of these roles allow the story to be taken in different places making the game very personal to how you want to live if you were living in this world yourself. I myself went with the Nomad route and one instance I had that really struck me was when you first enter into ‘Night City’ for the first time. As you cross the border, you halt at a traffic stop within the city to watch a group of people robbing a shop for money. The group tries to escape and enter in the car but the city’s police comes flying in from above and immediately grapple down onto the city floor and fire without hesitation at the crooks. It leads to an intense bloodbath of the crooks and all you can do is just watch all the action happen in front of your car having front row seat to it all. Both you and your companion are devoid of all emotion not from the trauma of it, but this gruesome human onslaught doesn't seem to phase them one bit. In fact, nobody in the city is phased by it at all.
Instances like these help establish what kind of world you’ve just entered as it’s presented as a kill or be killed setting. This works perfectly for the kind of idea I want to cover for the script-writing portion of the project as it’s not just the tone I want to loosely base this off from, but characters reactions to horrific acts and how it doesn't bat an eye to them showing how de-sensitised they are with it. This to me makes it feel like the city is transforming people’s mindsets to think the world is always meant to be like this giving no people hope to ever explore or Challenger themselves having seen what happens if you rebel or stand out.
I think adding onto that, the trailer of Cyberpunk 2077 when it launched on the 10th of December helps to back this up. Whilst the game itself is very action heavy, dark and bloody, the trailer really emphasis and represents what kind of game your in store for. Specifically, it’s all about people, family and the connections you make in the world promoting the RPG mechanics of the game as there’s real people living through all of this madness which is where you the player are there to dwell and experience those stories being told to you.
This is help emphaised in the trailer by how little the protagonist fights at all being replaced with close up shots of people’s faces and showing their raw emotions to events that happen in the game like body language of hugging each other further pushing that sense of family and connection. All these moments are harmonised together with the music of the trailer which really brings the connection across. I think this is because it’s not very traditional to have soft sounding and emotional music for a violet game as many people could disregard it because it’s different. But the music plays to  the trailer’s strengths from how delicate people’s lives are here with long stares on people’s faces and two people having dinner outside. These little bit of human interaction makes us feel more for the content we are watching.
Looking at the trailer in a more character design approach, faces were the big draw for me specifically between the Maelstorm and the human’s faces. The human faces have this really interesting line design on their face where LED stripes shine out of their face. They look modified and give off a artificial wrinkle vibe to them helping to deliver that cyberpunk look to them. Although in  strange way to me, it makes them look a lot sadder whenever they have a natural face with no emotion on them. This detail to me feels it flows nicely with where I want to take my story in the script-writing process as people often get cybernetic augmentations to make themselves feel better similar to plastic surgery. That’s not to say there isn’t good cybernetics but in this world of mine, cybernetics are mostly seen of a way of fitting into the city and losing part of your character which is what my Hyde character is so opposed to.

In addition to playing the game, I also received the book looking at the lore of the game and background information. Reading through, it thoroughly details a lot of how the world works like how even the littlest of things influence how the world ticks presenting a really thorough case on it’s world-building which gives me great inspiration to how I might approach it. There was one thing that stood out to me in the book which was to do with these special devices called ‘Braindancers’ which serve as really advanced virtual reality headsets and specifically how they mention it’s usage of celebrities as people can get too attached to the devices praising celebrities through it like they’re part of their lives and losing their identity because of it. This reminded me from a scene from Ghost in the Shell (1997) film where a garbage man loses all his memories from his mind being hacked leaving him completely hollow inside with no memories attached to him. I feel both of these instances I want to get across in the script-writing from maybe the dangers of idolising and retaining your character.
Book
Tumblr media
After reading the book, I thought I explore the game and take screenshots of areas that I found to be interesting for the script-writing process mainly areas like the slums and the city as those were my favorite to experience from how much they contrast from each other. What’s really nice with the game is that it has a built in photo mode where you can pause the game and screenshot a specific section of the world which you can then filter it to your hearts content.
The first image is one of the first slum looking environments that you find in a quest. Personally, I love the darkness that engulfs the scene here with only the lighting of the dim blue light and lanterns struggles to beat the darkness. Not to mention the smoke coming from the ground really helps to add character by all the gasses and smoke being stored and cramped in the smaller parts of the city whilst the outer city looks all glamorous.
Speaking of the city, this is a screenshot I took from the city center which is filled to the brim with architecture although strangely, not as much lighting as I would of thought would be put in here. Therese bright neon lights on the higher decks of the city sure but down below, it looks a lot darker and forgotten about in comparison. This look is something I definitely want to express in the script as it acts symbolic to the false persona that the city gives off compared to what we see on the outside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going back to character design, three different characters stood out to me when I was playing the game those being: Crusher, the Malestorm Gang and Johnny Silverhand.
Crusher is this large mechanical figure that serves as a threatening bodyguard to anybody that is unfortunate to step in it’s way. Looking at him characterful, I really love the denseness of the character as he looks like this unstoppable moving force that forces itself into conflict with thinking it over. He reminds me of my Hyde character a lot not just from personality, but also the sheer bulkiness that he imposes to us. To me, this how I would want my Hyde character to be built up thick and dense when it comes to modelling him,
Tumblr media
Having already discovered the Malestorm gang before earlier on in my research, what I found interesting about them in playing the game were their arms specifically the pipping that goes into them to create this cross between industrial and cybernetic arm. Whilst this is an easy comparison to make to my Hyde character as the arm is quite bulky, I would say it more perfectly suits my Jekyll character more from how human sized it is despite looking so mechanical if we were to compare this a sleek cyborg arm like Johnny Silverhand’s bionic arm.
In addition to the arms of these characters, the eyes are such a huge part of the aesthetic I really enjoy from them with their use of shapes and neon lights lighting up the scenery wherever they go. The lore behind the design is that if you want to join the gang, you have to get your eyes gouged out and replaced with these artificial eyes instead which is really creepy but fascinating to me. I think terms of the Jekyll character, the eyes seemed to be a better fit for my Hyde character giving the him a more menacing and threatening aura to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Only Malestorm Eyes
Tumblr media
And lastly, one other character I felt inspired by was ‘Johnny Silverhand’ your companion in the game. His bionic arm is what sticks out to me the most as it has a very sleek and well rounded design like it was designed for a human. I can imagine for the Jekyll character that i could combine aspects of the Maelstorm gangs arms with the one that Johnny possess to form a very chunky top but gradually becomes a lot thinner as the arm goes down.
Back to the character itself, there are two design aspects I like being the muscular structure and the consideration for re topology on Johnny’s bionic arm. The overall muscular structure is how i slightly imagine Jekyll’s body to be as well built. But maybe I might consider less muscular meat on his body due to him not as exercising as much to an average human. I raised the question of retopology to how the arm acts on a ball and socket set up for the arm to flex which I thought was quite interesting to see as I wonder if that was considered first before making the character.
Sketches of Johnny Silverhand before Keanu Reeves came onto the game
Tumblr media
I think from look at all of these character designs, I have good ideas for what I would like to do to my models from the rough sketches I have of them already. I feel the idea of Johnny and the Maelstorm gang’s arm being fused together is an idea I want to hold onto despite thinking my Hyde character as inspiration for the mdoel. Overall, the research on character design on ‘Cyberpunk 2077′ has been invaluable due to having so many of the elements and ideas I want to cover being found here in this game.

Script-Writing - Music I listened to when writing the essay
Whilst I was writing the essay, I listened to two particular tracks from the Ghost in the Shell Anime one being ‘Rise’ and the other ‘Inner Universe’ both by the artist Origa. I feel both of these tracks need mentioning for my development of the script as they helped me with my idea generation and embracing the right mood/atmosphere.
With Rise, it made me imagine how the idols and celebrities on the electronic billboards and holograms were moving and drawing the public’s attention to them using body language and speaking to them directly. In addition to this, how the model on the screen laughs at us as we enter into the city came to me when listening to the chorus as it comes off energetic but a little bit malicious sounding. Both of these ideas help to create the spectacle in my head of all these flashing lights coming in closer and closer almost like it’s controlling on me.
With Inner Universe, it’s a lot more tense to Rise with that being a lot looser at the start of the song as it throws you in right at the beginning but the chorus and everything afterwards, it’s a lot more cooling and gentle to listen too compared to the fast abrupt entrance of the song. It overall made me feel anxious of the world and danger was approaching which proabley why I listened to it a lot when it came to writing the moment where impulse stabs Chance in the street.
In terms of how both of these made me feel, they made me feel elevated and placed me right into my city in my story as the music has fast action in it making me feel like there’s danger coming at me from every corner where I walked. They also helped to imagine how things should look in the scene as well as the character’s direction and placement in the script and seeing what they see.

Script Writing - Persona 4 visuals Opening 2 and re-visit to Cyberpunk
For today’s research, I went back to Cyberpunk 2077 again to take some screenshots again that i feel best describes the scene that I’m writing for to help with the writing process for me. These scenes were a lot different to the previous ones as I wanted to take some set at night as that’s when the script take place in the day.
Starting off with the city this time, I really loved this shot of night city with the bright flashing lights as this is how I imagine the first bit of land that Impulse walks through before he’s in the middle of the city center walkway. If you were to take the walkway out of this shot, the road would essentially be how much room both the pedestrians and vehicles use to walk in the city sharing the same road essentially. This would be to express the lack of care the city has on it’s own residents and expect them to get by in life out of chance.
Comparing this to an actual cramped slum passageway that I found not too far from it, I think there’s actually quite a bit more character on offer compared to the screenshot I did of the city as little things like the chairs and stools and the wiring over the lights give it an unusual cozy feeling to it. This to me feels like it’s trying to show that despite the slums being the true depiction of my story’s city, there’s still beauty hiding away from the world that hasn’t been nourished or grown into the city almost like it’s been undiscovered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One last bit of research that I also did was from one of my favorite games of all time, ‘Persona 4′, specifically form the anime as I noticed how at the start of the opening, each of the different characters sees the world naturally through the lens of their glasses but sees the shadow world outside of it. This to me sparked in my head that this is kind of like how Impulse sees the world and to an extent, Ego too as Ego is only seeing the idols and the celebrities through his lenses and everything else around is blurry and scrambled. For Impulse, it’s the other way round.

Script-Writing - Themes and Meanings in the Script (Ghost in the Shell)
Expanding upon my ghost in the shell research, I wanted to look into the themes of the movie and how it relates back to my story and see if I can bring those ideas over into the script.
For context, Ghost in Shell is set in a future where technology has advanced so much that everyone essentially has a cybernetic augmentation done to their body. This could range from your fingers turning into multiple different fingers allowing you to type at ludicrous speeds to removing your normal eyes to unlock a set of binocular eyeballs that can see beyond human sight.
For our main protagonist (Motoko Kusanagi), it’s a bit of a different story as the only human element of her is that consciousness is stored like data in a cyber brain in her head known as a ghost meaning her whole body is just circuitry and metal plates being the shell. Because of this, the film questions us about identity with what really counts as human and what’s artificial intelligence. Is Motoko considered robotic from the way she speaks and not possessing any organic matter or human as she thinks for herself and isn’t following a program of any kind. This also leads to how Motoko behaves as well as it could be used to enforce the idea that she’s more robotic and artificial intelligence from how she treats nudity as she has no problem of strutting naked across the streets of the city or performing a mission. Bust she questions humanity and ideas about identity to herself and to her companion Batou who serves a complete contrast to Mokoto as he feels intrusive if he sees her makes and always tries to cover her up or look away. But to him, he could be seen as more robotic as he doesn't question life or thinks about himself. He just lives.
Relating back to my story, Impulse is the center of focus for this topic as he appears as this horrific monstrous beast that’s made up of debris and the natural environment but to him, he questions his own humanity as he wants to be human too and not be portrayed as scary to other people other than questioning his belief in humanity. This is why the hologram encounter I want to be really important in the script as this would develop his character and show he’s the smallest faith in hummanity.
youtube
Something that relates back to my story/script in the film is that because people have gotten to the point of completely cybernetic argumentation themselves, the film presents the idea of being mind hacked by someone else without you knowing it. It leads way to probably one of my favorite scenes from the film which is where a garbage man is in disbelief that he has a wife and daughter with the detectives tying to tell him that it was all fake. The scene hits hard when the garbage man looks at the photo claiming to be his wife and daughter with him. All we see is his face staring emotionless to the photo with small tears jut erring down his face. It is when we see that the photo is just him.
This relates back to my script-writing process from how the people of my city gradually lose and lose their personality the longer they stay in the city as the city hypnotizes the residents to thinking everything is all right with the idea of augmentation and famous celebrities and idols dominating the land. This makes the people safe but in a very toxic way as the people feel lost as more and more of their character is stripped away from nestling into the city which relates back to this scene from the film.

Script-Writing - Final Beats and Script Terms
Previous Beats
New Beats
-Ego inside of Impluse’s body start to walk towards the city from the green wasteland into the city
-Once they arrive, they are greeted by the sceneray of the city with flashy billboards, holograms and advertisements scatter across the chracter’s eyes only that Ego is really the one that’s most amazed by it although that isn’t saying much since he’s already used to this area all too many times. Impluse is very negative towards it all as he can’t understand how people can be so attached to something that’s so materialistic and taking away from your identity.
- Impluse is however really attached to the whisppy holograms that resembles humans that start walking on the street as one of them engage eye contact with him as it’s the only thing that isn’t scared of him.
- Not many people notice Impulse’s humongous body untill Ego tries to break Impluse’s gaze looking at he holograms which causes everyone to draw their attention to him. In a desperate move, they immeditely head into the shadows of the slums
- In the slums, they try to navigate back to Ego’s home as they feel its the safest place for them to be in. They however are interrupted by one of the celebrities literally just by themselves walking in the slums which intrigues Impluse from the opportunity at stake that it could lead to Ego getting revenge

Script-Writing - Animation research
For today’s research, I looked at an animated sequence and analyse it underneath the script-writing process as well what do they add to their story and how I can find a similar approach/explanation for my story and characters. I decided I would look at the film ratatouille as it contains a lot of visual material that feels familiar to the kind of things I would like to do in my script for my scene. From the film, I chose to look at three different clips of the film; the first time Remy cooks in Chef Guesteau’s, When he first experiences flavor and when he feels his most down in the sewers. Going off the guideline in the weekly plan, I followed this analysis guide to help with my analysis of these scenes as well as my own notes:
Write down the dialogue/key action
What's happening in the scene
What's actually happening in the scene
Is there anything happening under the surface
What are the character’s emotional journeys
How do they fit in the wider emotional journal in the film
How would this scene be written on the page
My Notes
Ratatouille making soup scene 1
Write down the dialogue/key action -  Remy runs across the kitchen making his escape. As he’s running, hes sniffs the soup just as he approaches the window and gags from the smell. He halts his escape and adds a few herbs and spices into the soup before setting off again. He’s then stopped in his tracks once again knowing he cna do a lot better and adds even more ingredients to the soup. Remy is just about to leave but turns his head back on the soup knowing he can really transform it into something beautiful
As Remy is complementing, Chef Gustau surprises him
Chef Gusteau: “REMEY!!! What are you waiting for!’
Remey: “Is this going to become a regular thing with you”
Chef Gusteau: “You know how to fix it, this is your chance”
Remey turns back on the soup and starts to perfect the soup through tossing ingredients left to right into the cooking pot. The colour of the soup transforms from a bricky red to a refreshing white. Through all of this, Remey is in a spiritual flow with the cooking process. Just as he’s about to dump the last ingredient in, Linguini interrupts his cooking trance from witnessing his methods.
What's happening in the scene - Remey is perfecting the soup that Linguini has messed up in himself trying to fix before the restaurant tanks in reviews
What's actually happening in the scene - A stray rat is perfecting a soup for a critic
Is there anything happening under the surface - Remey is finally being able to showcase his passion for cooking and to a large scale too which you can see in his frenetic energy as he hops over the saucepan using ingredients from side to side.
What are the character’s emotional journeys - Completely ecstatic as he’s finally cooking in a real kitchen with fresh food on the ready
How do they fit in the wider emotional journal in the film - Remy's emotional journey has been essentially uplifted for when he was separated from his family in the sewer almost like hes experiencing a re-awakening of sorts as he flourishes in his passion and leads to the friendship of him and Linguini after the soup is completed.
My Notes - I personally love this scene from how much Remy is in his element as he feels like hes releases his chains from being viewed as a rat and is cooking like a real chef.
youtube
From the analysis I did on the scene, i looked at other aspects of the film and how it could link with back to my script-writing and visualization process. One moment struck out to me where Remy is eating the foods and the colors sprawl all across behind him help emhaphsiening the rhyhym he gets when eating the foods. Ego’s raw feelings and happiness is the same way I envision it to be when he sees all the idols and celebrities scattered around him when his eyes are open.  Another scene is where Remy is on top of Paris and can see the glistening lights that light up the tops of the city. This to me is how I imagine the top of my city to look if you took away the flashing lights, imagery and holograms from the city.

Script-Writing - ScreenPlay Research
For today’s research, I looked at different screenplays to help with my understanding for the script writing process of my essay as well as helping me to structure my scene. Since the scene takes place in several different locations using the city (outside, the heart and the slums), I thought it would be important to look at scripts that involve describing the scenery as well as looking at how professional scripts are made.
The Imitation Game Script - https://www.raindance.org/scripts/Imitation_Game_The.pdf
I started off with ‘The Imitation Game’ as it’s one of my favourite films and wanted to see how they adapted the screenplay in two specific sequences from the film that being the opening and when they break the code. In the opening of the film, there's a lot of transitions/cuts of Alan’s office that cut back to the Manchester Police and Alan Turning himself of key set pieces. Comparing the sequence to the script, it doesn’t mention many of these cuts and ideas carried out in the final product which I find really interesting to how much content is or here has taken from the script of the film and adapted into the final product. The director has very much made their own interpretation of the script to how they envision the beats are played out for example, the first line from the script is meant to be said in a black screen right before anything else happens. In the film, Alan Turing is sitting by himself in an interrogation room with an inspector coming in before the screen cuts to black and says his quote. Whilst not critical to my screen writing process, I do find it interesting how people looking at scripts interpret the script that best aligns it with them meaning the script isn’t always the final product.
One thing I wanted to look at in these scripts I found today was how they adapted the visual imagery around characters as a big bulk of my scene involves witnessing the city for the first time from a fresh set of eyes. Form the opening of ‘The Imitation Game’ in the script, it’s a lot more expanded on the visual imagery that’s written in the script as it’s very minimal compared to what we see in the film. This is due to it being much more dialogue heavy and act as visual cues for the director to expand upon rather than the screenwriter detailing the world around the characters. I think for myself, I really like to flesh out the world around the characters to get a good mental image to where they are and what they’re looking at not just for an aesthetic choice but to also explore the themes of the story too through reaction and body language to the world.
Another scene from the film when they break enigma strikes out to me in the script as it involves exiting and entering many different areas of Bletchley Park back and fourth in breaking the code. Looking at the script, there’s a lot of usage of entering in new areas bolded out to establish a new area the characters are in as well as a lot of emphasis on the action of the scene too like capital letters to emphasises where noise must be strongest as well as long pauses used by multiple full stops to communicate to whoever receives the script where these dialogue and sound beats lie in the scene. Comparing this line of script to the opening, it takes a big step up in quality in how the actions are illustrated which I think is done to make the scene a lot more dramatic which follows through in the film.

After looking at the ‘Imitation game’, this then led me to looking at Blade Runner’s style of script and how it adapts from it into the final film. I more specifically not just looked at how it brings over it’s visuals from the script but also dialogue as well as that was important for me to expand my knowledge on since I imagine the two characters to back and forth with each other discussing morals and ideas of the world around them.
Blade Runner Script - https://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/blade-runner_shooting.html
Reading the script first, I felt really influenced by it not because it shares the same kind of setting as my story being told in a cyberpunk world, but it also express any nook and cranny of detail that there is in the scene form what the characters wear to what the room looks like and what kind of gadgets are present. This is exactly the kind of direction I plan to make with my script as this descriptive way of storytelling is one that resonates with me as I really enjoy world-building the scene out rather than keeping it very broad as to me, it helps to visualise a similar kind of setting that the screen writer has to the director and isn’t lost in translation.
Going back to the film, the dialogue in the script is word for word in delivery which really works as the script for the character leon has a lot of pauses and stutters in his speech due to not being human which the script does by using ellipses the same way as the imitation game does. In addition, use of question marks and short sentences help to add to the performance. Compare this to the Holden character, his dialogue is a lot more clearer and regiment as everything seems normal in his speech like a human. I think in terms of my script, there is a clear difference in these characters and who they are which I would also want to convey but maybe not to the same length as Blade Runner as it’s quite literal in how slow one character is when they speak.
The adaption from the script to film is very beat for beat as it follows every detail of the description and made it’s way into the film which the detailed points of the script help to really bring this world to life. Whilst I don’t need to think about that in terms of writing the scene, I do love the attention to detail that the filmmakers take from the script and feels like this is the script writers vision all along.

Baby Driver Script -  http://screenplaysandscripts.com/script_files/B/Baby%20Driver%20-%20Edgar%20Wright%20[08-15-2014].pdf
Lastly, I looked at Baby Driver’s script on how they commerence their opening and establishing the visuals around the characters in it’s opening too. Same with Blade Runner’s script, there’ a lot detial used to establish th opening scene in the film which isn’t to set the world around our main character Baby, but more so to get a sense of what kind of character he is rather than using the dialogue to explain. If this section of the script was very broad and minimal for the character, we wouldn’t get the same kind of energy we see in the film thus hurting the performance and opening of the film. This to me is very important to get right as I want to spend a lot of the scene looking into Impulses morality on life as whilst he will kill later on in the scene, he’s fascinated what human life has to offer and whats to be a part of a community but is so conflicted at the same time through the over usage of commercialisation and the idol culture dominating the city.
Going back to the script, it’s definitely the most script like out of the ones I’ve looked today too as it reads like a script and not a story which is what the Blade Runner Script often feels like as each bit of the Baby Driver script is split into short and minal sentences. These sentences establish an action in the scene with the next sentence detailing the next making it feel very snappy to read and instantaneous. I think because of this, I would like to write a fusion of Baby Driver’s script and Blade Runner’s but probably more to the style of Blade Runner since the world I’ve visuilise has so much to offer in terms of content and themes I want to jot down.

Overall out of all the scripts I’ve looked at, I think Blade Runner has the most influence on me due to how the details written out is the exact same kind of approach I want to take with my essay in terms of describing the world and bringing dialogue in although adjusting it more to suit with my characters morals and choices. Whislt I may of looked more into the adaptations of the scripts into the final product rather than mostly the scripts itselfs, I feel this research helps me in the long term with writing scripts and being very free in what you write allowing you as the screen writer to feel un-restricted to how you approach it.

Script-Writing - Characters, Themes and Story
For today’s research, I thought I would establish my characters, story and the themes that I want to bring across for the scene for the script-writing part of my essay so that I can refer back to this and help me write my essay. Starting off, I thought about which characters would be involved in my scene as well as a fact file of how they behave and what’s their relationship to one another.
Characters
Ego (Jekyll Character)
Obsessed with the ideas of celebrities and idols in the universe as they act like gods and role-models to him
Very handy person and the best at his craft of making things but also mending things too
Has learned to adapt to the ongoing changes of the world with cyber technology
So good at his craft to the point he’s fixing the most important people in the city like the president and the top celebrities that reside in the area
Despite his extreme time he puts into the craft as well as how he’s the best at what he does, he doesn’t get any recognition for his efforts which is what allows his body to transform into the Hyde character
But despite this detail, he still is a really nice individual who doesn’t intend in hurting in anybody or saying anything cruel
Sane individual for the most part at the beginning of the story but becomes much more insane over the course of the story and what leads to the eventualfull downfall of both Ego and Impluse
Nice person at the start of the story but then turns sour and in his last moments, he recognises his faults and what leads him and Hyde to pass away from this world for good
Is obsessed over the celebrity ‘Chance’ due to being the one he’s fixed the most on and having the closet relationship too out of the all the celebs in the city despite her never acknowledging his talents or wanting to share them to the world
Has a bit of a god complex
The name Ego is a literal definition for the character as he has a huge ego about himself and his work. Whislt he may be truly the best at his craft, his idea of himself thinking the world revolves around him makes him feel like he should be under the spotlight from how hard he’s worked
Impulse (Hyde Character)
A spirit that possess Ego from the natural world that reatin’s the physical presence of him but in a giant mechanical mech
Thinks independently to Ego but is a manifestation of Ego’s hatred towards Idol culture
Is very much against the whole idea of celebs and idols from how people obsess over them so much to the point they lose their own identity
Wants people to experience life outside of the city and apprentice living
Loves living and
Hates anything that closely resembles anything famous as he finds that environment toxic
Has murderous intent but not to the point he wants to murder everything in his path as he has morals to who he needs to kill which frankly, he only ever kills one individual across my story
Whilst he has murderous intent, he’s fascinated by humanity and what it has to offer as the holograms in the city he finds special as they look at him not as a junk monster, but has someone that has compassion
Wants to be seen as human and be accepted as individual and not a freak of nature
Whilst against Jekyll for the most part, he serves as a mentor for Jekyll through the course of the story and allows him to experience life outside of the city despite being very narcissistic from Impulse murdering his role model
Literally has Ego chained up inside of Impulse’s body
The name Impulse is to represent his hatred for the city and what it stands for and how it operates. The city to him acts as a graveyard to him which is ironic from where he came from that being a junkyard in the forested areas outside of the city. The reason he sees it this way is due to how the humans want less and less of their identity to be shown in that culture with most organic parts being replaced by robotic parts to gain an edge as well as becoming obsessed with celeb culture. Both of these to him make humans want to become something else like they’re not happy with themselves and try to aspire to be their own unique self.
Chance (Sir Danvers Carew Character)
Ego’s biggest idol and the one that he obsesses over the most out of all the idols in the city
Relies on Ego to fix her equipment being her arms, head and legs as they need the most attention. This is to symbolise without these facial features and appenditures, your just a generic body that could be casted off as a slab of meat which shows lack of soul
Is killed by Impluse with a broken off road sign found in the slums and is used to stab her right in the heart and prop her up against the entrance of the slums. This symbolises the disconnect from the slum world to the flashy city as whilst it was Ego’s favourite idol, the general public care about her death for a couple of days until she’s old news and the next idol takes her place like she didn’t exist. This is why shes propped up halfway between these two worlds as the world sees her but is then casted away into the slums.
Might consider having just her body presented to the world with no arms, legs or head to further drive that symbolism across
The name Chance is inspired by how you have to be incredibly lucky to reach elitist status in the world in terms of being a celebrity which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s just that it adds
Once I’d covered the characters, I went back on my previous blog posts and ideas and list out my themes that I would like to convey in the scene as well as covering the whole story too.
Themes
Lack of identity - From the removal of identity from the use of cyber enhancements replacing people’s characteristics with new ones as well as obsessing over celebrity culture to the point of not having an identity yourself. Essentially, the city acts like a graveyard
Roger Ebert puts it best -
Tumblr media
Humanity - Impulse covers this theme the best through the usage of holograms as they severe as the closest living thing to accepting who he is which emphasises the humanity of Impulse despite his murderous intent
Apprenticing Life for what it has to offer - Impluse commits actions that he believes will help grow Ego to become a better person. Whilst these methods are brutal and sadistic, it’s to further emphasise the point to abandon the city he’s all too familiar with. In addition to this, the world outside of the city is filled with life and exploration but because everyone is so attached to the city, no one dares to leave because they are so attached to it and feel terrified if they leave something they’re too familiar with
Attachment?
For the story, I looked back on the script-writing website on how to write a synopsis for a story for script-writing and this is what it breaks-down to; Beginning, Inciting incident, first turning point, call to action, point of no return, all is lost, second turning point, climax, the end. I think for the context for the script and essay, I think I’ll stick to these terms as it will help to establish the general story I want to bring across.
Story Beginning - Ego is a hard-working individual who works his way through the ranks of the engineering world becoming the best at his craft to the point he’s working with high-end celebrities, idols and important influential people.
Inciting Incident - He then ends up working with his favourite idol that he obsesses over by the name of ‘Chance’. Although despite working with her so much, she doesn’t seem to pay any real interest into him or acklodge he exists. In fact, he’s a blur to her despite fixing her at the worst points in her idol career. It doesn’t help that he’s been also promised at a chance at the spotlight by her for his hard-working efforts and dedication to his craft. This leads to him becoming depressed and feel disconnected to her as his talents aren’t recognised on stage by her or she does anything to put him in the spotlight. But at the same time, he feels a bit of hatred towards her being casted away from her.
First turning point - Saddened by this continuous guilt and this hatred brewing, he flocks outside of the city to the abandoned wasteland that lies on the outside of the city as he feels worthless and forgotten in the world. This leads him to this natural wasteland with greenery from top to bottom but because of his  emotions, he doesn’t take in it’s beauty and ploughs through the deserted environment. He then ends up in an abandoned junkyard in the greenery which then his hatred begins to manifest and create the character that is known as Impluse with large bits of scrap coming from either side attaching to his body and part of the scenery as well like skulls and plants.
Call to action - Impulse begins to gain conscious of his surroundings and initially has quite the negative reaction to Ego being inside his body as Ego is hung up inside supporting him with his arms and legs are inside Impulse’s body. However rather than scold him and threaten him, he hesitates and takes in the life around him with the flourishing natural environment almost speaking to him. It’s at this stage he almost forgets who he is as he becomes in tranced of his surroundings. Puzzled and confused, Ego tries talking to him which he then snaps back to a perfectly normal expression and questions the feelings he’s feeling as he’s never felt something like that before. Ego is quick to pass it off as star-gazing as there’s nothing special to this area in his eyes. Impulse then feels angered from that comment as he wants to protect what he can’t see is beautiful. This leads to Ego influencing Impluse to see what truly is beautiful in his eyes which leads Impulse to the city.
Point of No Return - When they arrive at the city, Impulse is confused at what he’s actually looking at as all he can see are blank black and white screens with different lettering to them and emptyless buildings. Comparing this to Ego’s perception of the city, he’s in a trance like state from all of the pretty colours that shine down around the city with the moving imagery of holograms scattered across. Both characters have a back and forth to what they find so special about the city with Ego amazed by the colours and flashiness of it and Impluse very much unable to grasp the culture being presented to him. This then leads to the two characters walking into the slums of the city to which they see Chance coming out of one of the buildings as she walks into the city. Impulse ends up killing Chance to prove a point to Ego that you shouldn’t be attached to this kind of toxic behaviour as he stabs Chance through her body just outside of the streets of the city with her legs, head and arms being ripped off. Ego is unable to see this murder occur as he passes out from losing control of himself in Impulse’s body.
All is lost - Ego wakes up in his bed with metal panels, scrap and environment scattered across his living space thinking it was all a bad dream until he sees the decapitated head of Chance and her limbs arranged in front of him. Ego is in immense sadness and confusion to how this has happened as he trembles in his movements that he's his role model is all mangled up in front of him. Things don’t help as on TV where the body is, his wrench is at the crime scene getting the wrong kind of spotlight he wished for. Impluse starts speaking to his head without the need of his humgoous body telling him it was the right thing to do.
Second turning Point - This makes Ego start to fester his hatred again and begin at it’s peak level as he wishes the whole world can burn and no-one deserves to live becoming just like Impulse when they first met. However, Impulse is feeling heavily resentful despite still hating the idol culture that is shown in the city as he regrets killing human life even if it taught him a lesson. He snaps out Ego’s mindset out of his head and asks him to come back to the city. WIth Ego standing in middle of the crosswalks, he begins to understand what it’s like to live life and the happiness it has being himself.
Climax - Unfortunately, this revelation from Ego is brought short as the police have spotted him in the city which Ego allows Impulse to take over his body and take him away from the city in a chase sequence. This then brings both characters to the in between of the city and the green wasteland where it’s marky and desert looking. Both Ego and Impulse sacrifice themselves in a chemical explosion so that they can both escape this world together as they know they aren’t suited here and are better known in a different life
The End - Nothing really happens or really changes to the city as the world keeps on moving on how it’s always been. However despite the irony that everything is remaining the same, more and more life starts to grow around the city encouraging people to explore and detach themselves from the culture that’s established in the city and experience a new life out of the city.
I think from my development today on the script-writing project, I can fully understand the scene that I would like to make now knowing the whole story, character’s intentions and backgrounds as well as my general themes being established in this document. I think to help with the essay structure, I plan to look into other scripts and see how I can both write and plan my scene out.

Script-Writing - World Building - Sound Effects of characters and establishing the scene
For today’s research, I looked into how my characters might sound when they’re walking in my world and how they interact with the environment but mostly the sound effects they make when walking. In addition to this, I also explored script ideas for the script essay as well as imagine what it would be like for the characters to walk in the cityscape and outside of the city.
Starting off with sound design, Hyde’s character is comprised of junk and mechanical parts meaning he would have a very tough and mechanical march to him almost like the Cyberman from Doctor Who by how they march. However, I think for the Hyde character, the march is slowed down a lot more to give it extra oomph to the character as well as having so much junk and trash on him that walking would be really tricky for him to move. In addition to this, the sounds of pistons and metal scratching against each other would be something I would add to the character’s walk with all the junk interfering with his body as he walks. Whilst searching up sounds that would sound similar to the character in how he walks, I found this clip of a tool box sound effect collection that felt like these were sounds that Hyde would produce with his mechanical body when he takes the world in for the first time as well as when he walks too.
With Jekyll, I imagine he would have more jangly sound of metal in his front pocket and leather backpack as this would be his tools rustling as he walks. His arm being mechanical would also emit a mechanical windup sound when he moves his arm proesthic. Videos that help reference this are the servo sound effect video which is how I imagine his fingers to sound as they move independently of each other as well as the bulk of the arm as well as this real life proesthic arm video that also adds to the mechanical movement of Jekyll’s arm. Additionally, the sound of a sharp metal spike would hit the ground every so often to reflect his metal peg leg that he uses to travel around the city.  Other than that, I can’t think of too many sound effects the character would make when living in the city other than basic human noises. To add on, the mechanical noises that I discussed for my Jekyll character could also be used for the Hyde character too as his way of moving his body and interacting with the environment around him.

After thinking about how my characters may sound if they were walking in my city, I started to actually think what kind of scene I planned to write for the essay so I could cater my future research towards it as well as seeing what would apply best with my previous research as well.
Ideas already for the script
Adaptation of the scene where Hyde does his first killing in the streets and the build up to it with dialogue at the beginning of the chapter.
Dialogue being both Jekyll and Hyde characters are arguing with each other on their morals on celebrities and idols and their effect on them
Causes Jekyll to lose control over his own body as the beast does what he’s right for him making Jekyll pass out
Jekyll wakes up to see scraps of metal, parts and debris scattered all across the room only to find a decapitated head of one of the most popular celebrities dead panning him in the eyes at the end of his bed.
I think from these ideas for the script, I plan to do an adaptation of the scene where Hyde commits his first murder in the book but in a cyberpunk setting as well as the themes of my characters sprinkled in too. Because of this, I thought it would be wise to read the chapter again From reading the scene, it flows quite nicely with my idea above with how the chapter plays out as I could imagine my Hyde and Jekyll Character talking to each other almost in the same way that Venom and Eddie Brock do in Venom before the murder takes place. The film serves as a great character study as well for the characters as they start with two differing ideals and reach the same conclusion at the end of the film which is how I plan to take my characters for the story.

In addition to looking at ideas fro my script and how I may create this dialogue between the characters, I looked back to Ghost in the Shell and more specifically the original 1995 animated film where a criminal is running through the alleys in the slums of the city. This is due to how I imagine the lower decks of the city to look life for the scene as I imagine this where the murder takes place in my script. The railing, the dirtiness and the limited light source makes this area very abandoned and forgotten to the point this is the real identity of the city. This links into tone of the themes of my story where the city has this false persona on the outer shell with the billboards covering the buildings hiding away it’s true identity at the bottom of the city.
The screenshots I’ve taken below from the film showcase the cramp and junkyard appeal of the slums and how unattractive they are to the normal traveller. They come across as un-inviting and forgotten which makes it perfect for my Hyde to commit murder in this kind of area or at least be within this area making the murder as the idol could be just on the outskirts of this cramped passageway for all the public to see which would be accurate to the novel. In addition, the elements used to create this scene like the small stream of water and the lack of natural light could be useful ways to describe the area around my characters to help present a clear picture of this scene in my script.
Tumblr media
Comparing this to the 2017 remake, they share very similar details and features within the scenery with both of them looking extremely empty feeling like this area has been rejected. However, both of these adaptations for the source material have different ways of conveying the idea of forgiveness and separation of humanity within this area of the slums as the 1995 animation is much darker in colour representing the feeling of fading away out of existence whilst the 2017 remake is a lot blander in colour calling out how people in my world feel like building block pieces that are part of the city and help make the celebrity culture system in flow. Also worth mentioning, the 2017 remake has a little bit more life to this area with animals and people going about their daily lives in this area which makes this really depressing area some life to it. This to me helps bring the idea of the forgotten souls that people rarely get to see if they would visit the city like they’ve been separated from society.
Tumblr media
I think with both of these films, they both present different ways of presenting the themes I want to cover in my scene and script-writing process that being losing your identity from the world and not taking for granted what life has to offer. Weather that be the lighting and how the land is constructed, I imagine my slum looking area in my city to look exactly like a fusion between the two films.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of fusions, one of the last bits I wanted to talk about with the 1995 film was the water fight scene as the fusion of these two images is how I imagine the outside of the city to look like with it having the bright colourfull panels on the side of the city with electronic LED billboards scattered around consisting of different shapes and sizes as well as large based holograms.
Fusion of these two images for the city scape
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, I think this is the right kind of direction I’ve taken for my scene idea as my past research on top of this really helps being this part of the story to life and establishes what kind of areas I expect to cover. Speaking of story, I think the next blog should be looking at the general story, characters and the themes I’m trying to bring across in the scene so that I’m on the right track.

Script-Writing - World-Building - Environment and Landscapes
For today’s script-writing research, I looked into the environment and landscapes that build up my city area so that I would get a clear sense for the world I would be writing in. From my last lecture on Carla and the research I’ve done so far, I think I’ve well established the city area for the most part being this highly dense city that’s a cross between New York and Tokyo with flashing lights and many different types of billboards and holograms dominating the high rise buildings. Although one part I would like to cover is the slum environment of the lower city that isn’t brought up too much in this world.
However, I think the main focus is to look at how I imagine the outside of the city to look like that’s often forgotten about in my world. How I imagine it is essentially just deserted land and ruins of a culture that used to exist like abandoned buildings that have overgrown moss in them and stone ruins where you can just about see what the structure used to be. Essentially outside the city is a very naturistic scrapyard as images I’ve found online like a rusty car with leaves and branches being grown inside is what you would expect to see in this kind of area. This artistic choice is mainly to help visualise the two different landscapes that’s on offer in my story as you have the large and enormous city that’s packed densely with billboards and ads littered across the city and the other being this almost deserted and peaceful land that for some reason, nobody wants to bat an eye towards since it isn’t up to code with modern day life. These two environments are used to express one of my themes in the story that there's a whole life out there than being obsessed with someone else's life that people are very blind to that exists. This is why my Hyde character very much focuses on enjoying life for what it has to offer instead of all the residents that live in the city and refuse to leave what's familiar to them.
Going back to my mood board, I’ve gone for very empty and wide landscapes as this to me shows how much vast area is available to everyone despite being all packed in the city almost like they have proper room to breathe compared to a cities high-octane energy to them. In addition to this, familiar places and objects like school buses, cars and houses make this outside world feel like you’ve been transported to this current day making it very familiar to us as well as enhancing the disconnect between both worlds. Aside from the mood board I made, I also found this image from a concept artist called ‘Varun Nair’ which features a character in a very marky and misty landscape with no real structure to it all. I really like this image as it helps with my visualisation for Hyde’s origins being from a really murky wasteland in a scrapyard  that Jekyll happen to stumble across. Although having said that, I really do love the mossy and green environment that I found through my mood boards so I may plan to do a combination of the both for his origins.
Tumblr media
Varun Nair
Tumblr media
After establishing what the outside land would look like in my mind, I did a few extra bits of research on the cityscape of my city. Having already covering the denseness of it through looking at New York and Tokyo from Carla’s session, I thought I look more into the slum like environment that you find on that level of the city underneath all the bright colours and ads. Going back to Blade Runner  and Ghost in the Shell 2017 Remake, the original Blade Runner has a scene at the noodle bar which displays how much traffic of people would be walking in these slum like areas with a lot of them walking close to each other like its the streets of New York and others cramped up to take away bars like the noodle bars along these streets. Whilst the idea of people walking as cramped like this in my world, I’m worried this might be a bit too cramped for my own liking in the scene that there won’t be enough time for my characters to breathe for the essay.
Blade Runner (1982) - Noodles Scene
youtube
In addition to Blade Runner, the Ghost in the Shell Remake has a really fantastic scene of what life is like on the lower levels of the city specifically where both Batou and Major walk down the alleyway to feed the dogs. This setting does not feature too many individuals walking around compared to Blade Runner’s population in the area even in places like the Chinatown section in Ghost in the Shell have just the right amount of people needed in the scene. I think this scene with the two characters walking is ideally how I imagine what life is like in both day and nighttime in the city as this would give my characters room to breathe if they ever had a scene outside.
Ghost in the Shell (2017): Major Mira Killian hungs out with Batou in Hong Kong
youtube
In conclusion, I think I’ve fully covered both areas effectively and enough for me to understand what these areas are like and how they relate back to the characters as these are environments are preferably the ones I want to cover if I ever write a scene with these characters outside. I think out of the two films for today’s research, Ghost in the Shell 2017 Remake is the more comfortable environment for me to write for due to allowing the characters to breathe and bring across the themes in my story most effectively.

Script-Writing -  World Building - Holograms and Living Conditions
From my research on billboards and LED screens, it lead me into researching holograms as from the last lecture I had before christmas, I did a tiny bit of research on Ghost in the Shell where one of the cityscapes had these huge people that were hologrammed to the side of buildings and served as giant advertisements for the products that were being sold in that universe. I thought I would look at these designs as well as the the holograms found in Blade Runner 2049.
Starting off, I researched into looking at real life holograms and how they made compared to what we mainly see in media like films and games. Pepper’s Ghost is a holographic hologram that's used for entertainment purposes mainly for music as it projects images onto a stage to make it seem like its 3D to us. How it works is there's a camera on top of the stage that points down to a reflective panel below the stage, this leads to the image to bounce onto the stage creating the illusion of a 3D image when your in the crowd. This allows the company to put anyone on stage without having to be there which in term allows the possibility of dead musical artists to appear on stage. I love the idea thats presented here and in terms of script-writing, I could consider how one of my characters reacts to looking at these human based holograms in my city. This is because I want to explore Hyde’s humanity as despite being a character that has very dangerous moves like considering murder as a viable option, I would love to write Hyde’s humanity when he sees a hologram almost like it’s a real person and not something that everyone runs away from.
Here's How Holograms On Stage Can Look So Real
youtube
Pepper's Ghost: How Dead Celebrities are Being Recreated as Realistic Holograms
youtube
With Ghost in the Shell, there’s a lot of use of holograms in the 2017 remake of the film compared to the animated counterpart as it’s used both for advertising purposes to make it look futuristic whilst also practical as well as there’s a scene where the main characters use a hologram computer to look at a murdered victim. The holograms on the buildings are very pixelated almost like if they were made up of building blocks if you pay close enough attention which is a very cool aesthetic but I think for me, I much prefer the kind of holograms that look a lot more realistic instead. Having said that, the image below has a giant picture of a women with a static effect going on with the electronic image. Whilst not a proper hologram, I could imagine this detail being used for one of the 3D holograms in my world if you were to look close enough at it. One last thing to quote from the 2017 remake, holograms are also used as aesthetics for characters as well as the mood board I’ve made has a woman using a parasol but a circular hologram display surrounding her. This might be a detail I may want to express further in my essay with holograms being used almost like phones and clothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another film I looked at was Blade Runner 2049 for its use of holograms as it’s very iconic for its usage for not only as background pieces, but also to create character development for the main characters of the story. In one scene, K (the main character) reunites with Joi in a giant hologram ad which she only speaks in a pre-vocoded voice to him meaning every interaction with her is the same and all K can do is watch her replay. The scene strikes so much to the character because this is the only time he can see her again as shes left his world for good and it being an ad confirms to K that she’s really dead like he’s watching an old memory of her without the emotion. This kind of delivery I would love to put into the essay as I want to bring themes to the characters with the use of holograms mainly for the Hyde character to express the deeper themes of whatever scene I shall convey.
Blade Runner 2049 - K & 3D hologram scene
youtube
In contrast the scene K first meets Joi in Chinatown, we’re treated to a lot of visual holograms used as ad’s like a ballerina dancing in the middle of the street and a girl dancing in a dark alleyway. What’s quite interesting with these kind of holograms is how easily people just walk through them like its nothing. I don’t quite mean this in a conventional way as it’s only light your passing, it’s more so how used to it they are which I think would sevre greatly to Jekyll’s character. This is because of how much Jekyll is used to the same city over and over again doing the same old job at the same time and desperately wants to be known for his work.

After I looked at the two films, I looked into character designs online on what I imagine holograms would look like in my city and how they would interact with my characters. From the research on ‘Ghost in the Shell’ 2017 Remake and ‘Blade Runner 2049′, I want to go for a blue styled holograms that would severe as promotional material in the city as moving advertisements that can interact with people that are walking by near them. These holograms wouldn’t be able to do anything physical to whoever see but they would be able to slightly minic what a person is doing before do their pre-generated action based on the ad they are from. Visuals that help me realise these holograms for my city are the characters Cortana from Halo and the Engineer from Prometheus. Cortana is how I would imagine the billboard signs in my city to look like with 3D people promoting advertisements with slight static to them and the Engineer with it’s smooth looking body and face giving it a very genderless approach which would be most suitable for the almost living hologram ads.

Engineer - Prometheus
Tumblr media
In conclusion, I feel confident with the design choices and research I’ve gone through for me to understand what kind of holograms I want in my city and be made alive in this world of mine as well as interacting with the characters. For the ground holograms, I could imagine them having a blue fizzle tothem where they’ve previously been to help peak the curiosity of humanity from Hyde as he finds the experience whimsical. I think for the next post, I want to look into the kind of city scape and the outside areas of the city to contrast it.

Script-Writing - World-Building and Planning - Billboards and Holograms
After reviewing Cyberpunk 2077, I thought I would plan my process looking ahead for the script-writing essay as I didn’t really have a clear plan to what I wanted to write. This lead to me researching online how to write a script itself as I was feeling a bit unconfident from how long it’s been since I’ve last looked at the project from working on other projects. One website that really helped me out was the website ‘WriteBetterScripts’ as they detail what steps you should take before writing up a screenplay. Looking at the website, I felt comfortable with looking further into the history of my location and world much further on from the previous lecture I had on script writing as like the article says, it would help me understand the mechanisms of my world and how my characters react to them all.
To help establish this for my script, I took the notes from my last lecture with Carla as the whole process of thinking how every exact thing is made influenced me to look into the nitty-gritty details of the world I want to imagine for myself so that the writing process was easier for me. I first looked at one of my earlier mood boards that I had created for both the script-writing and character design projects as this captures the overall tone and feel for what I want going on in my scene with the bright lights illuminating the city whilst a dark vibe happens on the lower parts of the city giving it a false persona. The main focus from the mood board was to see how I could research parts of these images and look into the history of where these sections came from and how I can mentally put together the background and mechanisms of my scene for the essay. Focus points I found from looking at the mood board were the bright lights of the outside city and the slum-like environment that was inside the lower decks of the city. Ideas like Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell immediately springed out to me as these may be films and media I want to look into more as I go through this project.
Tumblr media
Working off the previous lecture and mood board, I wanted to look into the history of my area and the makings of some of the things that are set in the world. For example, Led screens and holograms were peak interests of mine from the subject matter I want to go for in this essay being a story of a man obsessed with celebrities and idols that leads him to destroying what he loves most out of pure rage. I started by researching on different websites that detailed what goes into the making of LED billboard and Screens as these would be the main focus of my city area where my characters would walk in and receive different feelings to what they see. Here I learned different things like an LED screen consisting of little lights packed closely together which can’t be seen by the naked eye and how they only emit three colours being - Red,Green and Blue. How these lights are packed together to create one larger thing reminded me a lot about my Jekyll and Hyde characters and how they seen in the world as Jekyll to me is one of those small Red, Green or Blue lights that are packed closely together in the monitor and Hyde being an ad you see on an electronic billboard that you see in Times Square. This is because Jekyll to me is a small individual that doesn’t have any standout details to him compared to the celebrities and idols that dominate the city’s culture which comparing to my Hyde character is a lot more eye-turning since there’s been nothing like him before to exist being this humongous mechanical beast that no-one has seen before as it’s out of the general public’s imagination.
Alongside this, I did a few bit of research on the different types of billboards that are visible in New York where there’s this one website detailing what each billboard is used for in the city from events, ads and celebrations. One thing I really took out of it was the shapes of these screens as they curve and warp around buildings to create unique visuals that you couldn’t make on a traditional sign. Things like animations, placement of the promoted material and how it’s structured all make it as memorable as possible for people to see thus in term making people remember what was on the billboard itself. This lead me to creating a mood board between New York’s Billboard culture to Shibuya’s layout as I wanted to see and realise the differences of how both cities advertise and use colour on their billboards. Looking at New York’s billboards as previously mentioned, use complicated shapes and techniques to advertise their work and promote events with curved and flexible boards as well as different kinds of rectangles and squares. They act very unconventional but somehow work amazingly which is what draws your attention to them as well as giving each board in Times Square room to breathe with a lot of them having their own space to show off what the boards have to offer. Comparing this to Shibuya in Tokyo, the billboards are a lot more clustered together like how LED’s are laid out when you zoom in. There’s so much more colour on offer because of this to the point where it feels overwhelming and feel like they’re all watching you as you walk on the streets. And this is why I love it as it also makes feel like you’ve entered into the future when you step into the city for the first time as you can’t comprehend all the colours that surround you and just wants you to look at them all.
Both of these cities I found have different ways of advertising and how they format it which is why I feel I imagine a mixture of both of these cities in my world for Jekyll and Hyde to explore in and add to the dense city I imagine it to be.
Tumblr media
One last bit of my LED screen and Billboard research is that I stumbled across this article which features Tokyo’s famous advertising areas like Shibuya without the advertising, bright colours or 3D text and replaced with just bright blocks instead. These are the works of Graphic Designer Nicolas Damiens and to me, I think it takes away the character out of the areas as it’s very mute looking but however not dull as the white out blocks give ti a new architectural feel to it all. One revelation that I had when looking at these amazing images is that this could be how my Hyde character interprets the city for himself as he despises the culture so much to the point he can even pictured out what’s even being displayed other than just hollowed out people. Comparing this to Jekyll where all he sees are the flashy colours and imagery to the point his dreams have come to life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, I feel really pleased with this first bit of research I’ve done on my world-building for the script as I’m starting to pick up the pieces to how both of my characters visualise the land around them which will definitely be important to my scene as I at least would love to feature it outside which would let me able to express the city fully. I think for the next post, I plan to look at other futuristic details like holograms to help with not only the advertising of the city, but to also play with the humanity of the Hyde character as whilst he’s a giant mechanical beast, he wants to be seen as normal as well despite being made out of rubbish.

Character Script-Writing - Looking out of your window Lecture - 9/12/20
For today’s script-writing lecture, we looked at how we should be researching for our essay mainly how we are going to visualise how the environment and setting of our scripts are going to look like in word form. I decided I would do some primary research and look into some reference images if my characters were to see the world from their perspective as well as how I visualized what their view would be out of their bedroom window as this was our brief from the lecture. Since I’ve already established a Cyberpunk setting for my universe for the script, I decided to look at screenshots from the game Cyberpunk 2077 for representation as well as ideas flowing in my head. I chose the first image due to the neon lights and the grungy atmosphere to it all as this is how I imagine the streets are like in the Cyberpunk setting on the lower levels and where I believe Jekyll starts to bring havoc in the night as Hyde. I felt most inspired by this image mainly because of it reminding me of the scene in the novel where Hyde kills his first victim as these are the streets I imagine this would happen in a Cyberpunk setting as they act very sheltered and un-safe despite the amount of lighting that goes on in the image. For the second image I chose, it’s a direct contrast to the first screenshot with the environment brightly lit but sort of tone in colour. This is how I visualize the world in daylight a lot more mute with some activity going on with increased people walking around but not too much on the colour of the land.
Cyberpunk 2077
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going along the previous Cyberpunk works, I also looked into Ghost in the Shell Remake for its visual style with one of the city shots really emphasising how the stories of both of my characters are tied together as my Jekyll character is obsessed by idols and celebrities in this world which are dramatically showcased on buildings as if they were living gods which also serves as a great metaphor for the character whereas the Hyde character resembles a depiction of his hatred and rage that he doesn’t get noticed or anyone acknowledging his skills and resources despite how much they go into the world.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Tumblr media
After I did some medium depictions of a cyberpunk setting, I then went to research towards real life scenery to also help with my visualisation and background for the script. One place that really stuck out to me was New York as very much like the screenshots I’ve taken from Cyberpunk 2077 and Ghost in the Shell, they feature very highly dense areas with tall buildings littered across the streets. This is why I love this shot of the Manhattan Bridge and Manhattan City together as it helps to establish what kind of area this world is in. On top of that, the lighting brings out the same points I had for the digital mediums giving a very colorful and busy arena. Not only was it the main city was interested in New York, but it was also downtown New York and how much it compares to the original city as they’re a lot less complex in art style as well as technological made too. Although despite this, I really love the visual design of these homes and housing as this is the kind of living space I imagine my characters to live in. So much so for this lecture, I imagine my Jekyll n Hyde character sees out their window on the right hand side, a bricky wall with girders and a ventilation system with a contrast on the left being this very flashy space that looks vibrant and colourful with celebrity holograms and imagery scattered across the streets.
Because of this visualisation for these characters to look out from, this lead to me looking at the streets of Shibuya in Japan of this said visualisation as it reminded me about the LED screens that always advertise around the crossing as well as the different lights projected off. This to me perfectly in my mind represents the kind of image I have that my characters look at when they look on the left hand side of their window. In addition to the window talk, I thought a lot about the window itself so I imagined that I the blinds and bedroom would be kinda similar to how it looks from the film ‘Apocalypse Now’ in its aesthetics with the chracters eyes peering through the shades with bright lights shining outwards and glimmering on the shades themselves. Furthermore from looking at Shibuya, the blue radiance of the lights would also be shining into the room too giving it a mellow and depressing feel but also noir setting too.

After I looked at images from films, places and digital media, the next part of the lecture was to describe how one of characters looks out of this window and what they think about from their perspective. This goes into the nitty gritty of it all as we had to look at what colour everything was, what kind of atmosphere it is and what are the feelings being expressed in the character etc. Here are my notes
Mr Hyde Look and Response to the scenery
Orange pasty brick walls
Neon lights shining through his blinds
Sees both the walls and the bright lights the same thing
Lots of extreme colour
Murky and foggy atmosphere
Noisy from the streets below him and vehicles flying past him in his apartment
Hates living there as he wants something more peaceful and less popular
Counts the scrolls of advertisements repeating themselves on the buildings
Tall and high rise buildings
Tired of seeing a new batch of idols every week but at the same time, his attention towards them is in a trance like state
Never feels like there’s natural sunlight coming through his room or any kind of normal coloured lights
Sees a contrast between fame and ruin (morphically thinks that celebs can fix everything)
Misty and condensated windows from the work of his tools as well as the outside fog/condensation
Because I felt confident with my description, I thought as a bit of extra detail I would do was to write some dialogue for myself from the notes to get my brain in the habitat of this process despite not being done as a script. The result is something to help me visualise the characters a bit more to think about their designs a bit more in term os the project itself.
Dialogue
The flickering strobe lights from outside are on their cycle again as the light seeps into my room making the brick walls different for a change. I sit by my desk and gaze upon the scenery only to see the same old fog and gas that pollutes the higher plain of the city where at times, I feel I’m the only that notices in this damn city. The noise of the food trucks and flying vehicles brings me closer to my window as I’m enlightened from the mirage like billboards that swarm the city centre and bleed into the outside apartment spaces like they’re shielding the true nature of this land.  346, 347, 348. 349 times so far I’ve seen the same constant loop of that damn idol I fixed to perfection. As much as I want to look away from her, my eyes keep on systematically rotating my head towards her like I’m trapped in her gaze.
“How does he find so much love and passion for this kind of stuff. Maybe it’s because he’s still part of me inside. Weakness I say, no wonder we managed this kind of view. Then again, at least this place is out of sight from those zombies”.
I quickly retreat back to my blue luminescent room before the ad’s have time to change again.
Lastly, I had a few mins of feedback with everything I’ve done which was really positive as it also provided me with some ventures I should also consider looking at as well for the script essay like how is everything made from the LED screens to the buildings as well as looking into more scripts. In the end, I found this lecture to be not only informative but really fun too for me as I’m excited to continue researching for the script over the holidays.

Character Design/Script-Writing - Character Look and Coming up with Ideas - 2/12/20
In today’s lecture, we looked into more the writings of a character and how we could apply them to our own interpretations of Jekyll and Hyde that we would be using for both projects. But before that, we had a brief look at how we might write dialogue with our characters which I grabbed last week’s character I made in the lesson (Bolt McDuffin) and made a polar opposite version of that character to see how we would imagine they would communicate with each other. With my character being very kind, handy, finds good in others and open-minded; my other character was envisioned as horrible, useless, a bully, deceitful and stubborn.
The dialogue
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once we got through that exercise, I started to look into ideas of my own for the character that I would not only be writing to go with my essay, but also be the template for my character design. I came up with three-ish ideas that I made in the time that we had which whilst they’re not as meaty, I’d planned to explore afterwards as I felt these lined up with my cyberpunk setting that I’d established and wanting to pursue with for the projects.
The first idea being this engineer/handyman character who fixes bodies of other cyborgs and people due to people being so cybernetically enhanced. He’s so good at his job, he ends up fixing major celebrities bodies in this universe. But his turning point is he’s always pushed out of the spotlight all the time as he always watches those celebrities get so much fame and attention despite him being the one that’s keeping them alive. This causes his emotions to get the better of him and causes metal structures to attach to his body to create this giant, mechanical monstrous being that looks horrifying to look at and wreaks havoc among the city. Whilst he’s aware of his doings, he slowly remembers less and less as he’s causing this destruction to the point when he wakes up, there’s just a whole array of mechanical heads looking at him opposite him.
The second idea was loosely based off this first idea however instead of it being an immediate transformation, it would be a much slower burn for the character’s change as it would be based on a human who is sick and tired of being human and feels powerless. This leads to him augmenting his body over the course of the story to the point the technology gets the better of him as it starts infecting his brain making him not only less human on the outside, but also forgetting his past self as he acts more mechanical and grotesque like he’s a mad science experiment.
The third idea was more or less a combination of the two ideas i’ve listed but Hyde character would be a more mechanical beast with his body being mostly metallic. Whilst these ideas aren’t fully developed yet, I felt this was a great start to what I might want to pursue with even if I don’t feel quite confident yet as I want to explore different ideas and concepts. Which is why after the lecture, I began developing upon these story ideas for my character to get a rough idea what to research, reference and base my designs off.
Whistl going through these ideas on this page, I felt more than happy that I could already start to look up references for the character not only for it’s looks, but external ideas that might lead into more developed ones as I feel I’ve created many different starting points for myself to just get on with the projects.
Tumblr media
Very much in the same vein as yesterday, I created even more mood boards on the ideas going through my head form the script-writing lecture I had today in addition to the character design project but mostly for that project. For these mood boards however, they’re a lot more focused on specific features for the character building of my characters (mostly Jekyll). The first board is all to do with cyberpunk, the second is looking at engineer.mechanic characters as well as character form and face which the last board is based on a cross between animals and mechanical parts as ideas for the Hyde character.
Looking at the first mood board, these all feature cyberpunk related imagery that other artists have created as this is the kind of art style I would want to style my work towards even if it’s either a realistic depiction or a cartoon depiction as I’ve still not made my mind up just yet. But for specific images that stand out to me, I love the lighting/glow off the lights that shine off the mechanics and tech giving it a very unnatural but vibrant look to it. There's two different interpretations of this lightling I like which are wire like designs on the face from Cyberpunk 2077 which are subtle and not as eye catching and the flip opposite from the same game where you have these really bright-lights that highlight the more memorable bits of the character. In addition, I really love the shapes used to create these designs for the head and helmets as it reminds me of the household robot project where we use simple shapes to transform it into something really interesting and unique looking such as the four panel of heads that have different shapes for their eyes.
Mood Board 1
Tumblr media
CyberPunk 2077 lighting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Four Panel of Heads using basic shapes
Tumblr media
For my second mood board, this looked at more of the visual design and job role for the Jekyll character since i imagine him as a mechanic/engineer kind of character. This mood board has probably the best representation of both my realistic art style ideas as well as the more cartoon based characters that i imagine the character to look like specifically an animalistic creature. In the top left hand corner, I really love the jumpsuit uniform and how it’s presented which is something I would love to experiment in my rough sketches as well as a use of an apron as I have an idea to cover the whole character’s body with just a apron. Looking at my mood board, one image seems to look out of place which is the postman from Klaus. This is because whilst this mood board looks at engineers and mechanics, it also looks at visual design, silhouette and shape theory as i imagine my Jekyll character to be thin or supported by something that is clearly much larger than him like the image in the model with a man with a mech suit for his back.
Tumblr media
Lastly, this mood board consists of different designs that combine the use of technology and animals together as the Hyde character may be something that’s a combination of the two sources like these image in the mood board. I imagine him to be a monstrous size compared to my Jekyll character but also want to make me threatening and sinister looking like he doesn’t belong to the area of my Cyberpunk World. Despite having some nice sources for research on Hyde, I think I might need to do just a bit more research into the Hyde character besides the first and this mood board as I’m a bit stuck to what he’ll look like.
Tumblr media
One other mood board I forgot to mention was this one displaying the different kind of settings and environments that I imagine my cyberpunk world to be based in. This mood board is more for the script-writing project as this is visual reference to how i imagine my characters Jekyll and Hyde view the world they live in with lots of bright neon lights that help illuminate the cold dark city around them.
Tumblr media
Looking back from today, i’m really impressed with the amount of work I’ve managed to achieve in one day from coming up with the basis of my characters and their setting to making mood boards on both projects making me feel on top of the process.

Character Design/Script-Writing - Essay Analysis and Research -  2/12/20
For today’s lecture and research, we went through the briefing on the character design project mostly looking at the requirements we need for submission. This consisted of looking at different examples for what we could produce as well as how we should go about our research. Speaking of, I felt influenced to finish reading the book of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde once the briefing had finished not only for the script-writing project, but to take notes for the character design portion for my characters as I copied and pasted descriptions of both Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in the chapters to help me for inspiration for my characters.
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Notes
Mr Hyde description:
"He is not easy to describe. There is something wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something down-right detestable. I never saw a man I so disliked, and yet I scarce know why. He must be deformed somewhere; he gives a strong feeling of deformity, although I couldn't specify the point. He's an extraordinary looking man, and yet I really can name nothing out of the way. No, sir; I can make no hand of it; I can't describe him. And it's not want of memory; for I declare I can see him this moment."
-        Very brutal in character as he tramples over a child
-        Not an honest man and doesn’t keep to his word
He was small and very plainly dressed and the look of him, even at that distance, went somehow strongly against the watcher's inclination.
Mr. Hyde was pale and dwarfish, he gave an impression of deformity without any nameable malformation, he had a displeasing smile, he had borne himself to the lawyer with a sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness, and he spoke with a husky, whispering and somewhat broken voice; all these were points against him, but not all of these together could explain the hitherto unknown disgust, loathing and fear with which Mr. Utterson regarded him.
God bless me, the man seems hardly human! Something troglodytic,
the face of Hyde sat heavy on his memory; he felt (what was rare with him) a nausea and distaste of life; and in the gloom of his spirits, he seemed to read a menace in the flickering of the firelight on the polished cabinets and the uneasy starting of the shadow on the roof.
Mr Jekyll Description
To this rule, Dr. Jekyll was no exception; and as he now sat on the opposite side of the fire—a large, well-made, smooth-faced man of fifty, with something of a stylish cast perhaps, but every mark of capacity and kindness—you could see by his looks that he cherished for Mr. Utterson a sincere and warm affection.
The large handsome face of Dr. Jekyll grew pale to the very lips, and there came a blackness about his eyes. "I do not care to hear more," said he. "This is a matter I thought we had agreed to drop."
Mr Hyde
And as she so sat she became aware of an aged beautiful gentleman with white hair, drawing near along the lane; and advancing to meet him, another and very small gentleman, to whom at first she paid less attention. When they had come within speech (which was just under the maid's eyes) the older man bowed and accosted the other with a very pretty manner of politeness. It did not seem as if the subject of his address were of great importance; indeed, from his pointing, it some times appeared as if he were only inquiring his way; but the moon shone on his face as he spoke, and the girl was pleased to watch it, it seemed to breathe such an innocent and old-world kindness of disposition, yet with something high too, as of a well-founded self-content.
Presently her eye wandered to the other, and she was surprised to recognise in him a certain Mr. Hyde, who had once visited her master and for whom she had conceived a dislike. He had in his hand a heavy cane, with which he was trifling; but he answered never a word, and seemed to listen with an ill-contained impatience. And then all of a sudden he broke out in a great flame of anger, stamping with his foot, brandishing the cane, and carrying on (as the maid described it) like a madman. The old gentleman took a step back, with the air of one very much surprised and a trifle hurt; and at that Mr. Hyde broke out of all bounds and clubbed him to the earth. And next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot and hailing down a storm of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jumped upon the roadway. At the horror of these sights and sounds, the maid fainted.
The murderer was gone long ago; but there lay his victim in the middle of the lane, incredibly mangled. The stick with which the deed had been done, although it was of some rare and very tough and heavy wood, had broken in the middle under the stress of this insensate cruelty; and one splintered half had rolled in the neighbouring gutter—the other, without doubt, had been carried away by the murderer. "Particularly small and particularly wicked-looking, is what the maid calls him," said the officer.
This last, however, was not so easy of accomplishment; for Mr. Hyde had numbered few familiars—even the master of the servant maid had only seen him twice; his family could nowhere be traced; he had never been photographed; and the few who could describe him differed widely, as common observers will
Dr Jekyll The doctor seemed seized with a qualm of faintness; he shut his mouth tight and nodded.
But no sooner was Mr. Utterson alone that night, than he locked the note into his safe, where it reposed from that time forward. "What!" he thought. "Henry Jekyll forge for a murderer!" And his blood ran cold in his veins.
He was busy, he was much in the open air, he did good; his face seemed to open and brighten, as if with an inward consciousness of service; and for more than two months, the doctor was at peace.
"But if you mean, was it Mr. Hyde?—why, yes, I think it was! You see, it was much of the same bigness; and it had the same quick, light way with it; and then who else could have got in by the laboratory door?
Once I had finished reading, I then began to look at different images and references online to fill in the folders as I used the text from the book as guidance. In addition, I had a really strong feeling for what kind of environment/setting I wanted to set my characters in that being a cyberpunk theme. This is largely from the usage of colours that’s available from the art style as well as being passionate about an upcoming game that’s recently got me very inspired for this project that being ‘Cyberpunk 2077′ by CD Project Red. The game is something I plan to have as my big referencing body for inspiration, analysis and ideas for the character design and script-writing projects.
Tumblr media
Looking at the folders, I thought I would create a more general mood board to get my ideas going but taking mostly inspiration from the ‘Body Types’ title. This mood board mainly focused on ideas to how I might create my ‘Mr Hyde’ character which wasn’t just an exploration on his body shape, but also looking at aesthetic choices for the character like the cyberpunk aesthetic I would love to achieve. For body types, I looked at a mixture of large and substantial bodies going along with the Hyde description from the novel and tall and lanky creatures/monsters as I want to emphasise the unnatural and terrifying aesthetic of the character and also texture of the character too. For other ideas I looked in this mood board, I looked into cyberpunk clothing and aesthetic as well as into faces as the creepier images I found are a loose idea for what I might want to go for my Hyde’s face.
Tumblr media
Overall, I feel pleased from today with my research on not only the book but also my look into how I might be thinking about my characters (mostly Mr Hyde). I think tomorrow is where I’ll start exploring ideas a bit more into images and drawings to get a vague idea for what I may create.
