Tumblr media
Increasing Demand for Point-to-Point Urban Air Mobility (UAM), Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations, Increasing Medical Air Transport and Air Ambulance Services are factors driving the Global Civil Helicopter market in the forecast period 2024-2028.
According to TechSci Research report, “Global Civil Helicopter Market - Industry Size, Share, Trends, Competition Forecast & Opportunities, 2028”, the Global Civil Helicopter Market stood at USD 10.8 billion in 2022 and is anticipated to grow with a CAGR of 6.03% in the forecast period, 2024-2028. Helicopters are a particular kind of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. They can take off, hover, and fly in any direction, including sideways, backwards, and forwards, by using one or more horizontal rotors to create lift and power. They come in various varieties, including commercial, military, and civic. Numerous uses for helicopters exist, such as business trips, oil and gas activities, military missions, air ambulance services, and search and rescue missions. They are also employed in cargo transportation, aerial photography, and aerial surveys. They are perfect for operations in hard-to-reach places like rural locales and disaster zones because of their adaptability. When a helicopter operates, its main rotor generates lift for the aircraft while its tail rotor balances off torque.
The global civil helicopter market is a dynamic and multifaceted industry that encompasses a wide range of applications, from urban air mobility (UAM) and air taxis to search and rescue (SAR), aerial emergency medical services (EMS), offshore energy support, and tourism. Civil helicopters play a vital role in connecting remote areas, providing rapid transportation for critical medical cases, facilitating offshore operations, and offering a unique aerial perspective to tourists. Safran Electronics & Defense’s Euroflir 410 optronic (electro-optical) system has been selected for the four Airbus H160 helicopters being procured by the French Navy.
The Euroflir 410 system was selected by Babcock France which was awarded the contract to provide the four helicopters by French defense procurement agency DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement). The French Navy will start operating these helicopters in 2022 for a period of ten years.
These four H160 rotorcraft from Airbus Helicopters will be part of an interim fleet that includes a dozen Dauphin N3 helicopters also fitted with the Euroflir 410 system. The H160s will be modified by Babcock to meet the French Navy’s evolving operational needs. Furthermore, feedback from the navy’s operations will be used to help design the military version of the H160, dubbed Guépard (Leopard).
The first H160 helicopters outfitted with the Euroflir 410 system, which is designed and produced in France by Safran, will be delivered in 2022. Safran also supplies Arrano turboshaft engines for the H160, along with other major equipment items.

The Euroflir 410 NG is capable of detecting a ship’s registration number or a person in distress at a distance of several kilometers. It will boost the French Navy’s operational capabilities by enabling it to carry out at-sea Search & Rescue (SAR) missions from bases in Brittany (Lanvéoc-Poulmic) and along the English Channel (Cherbourg).
The Euroflir 410 will provide unrivaled observation capability under any conditions of visibility, in large part due to its very-long-range multispectral telescope and high-performance line-of-sight stabilization. In addition to being fitted with a high-definition video camera (HDTV) and a medium-wave infrared (MWIR) imager, its multispectral architecture also includes supplementary cameras that are particularly well suited to severe maritime environments, namely near-infrared and shortwave infrared models.

Safran said in a statement that this latest contract win “confirms Safran’s European leadership in the highly demanding market segment for onboard optronics”.

VIKING Adds Hellenic Navy SAR Duties to RIB Reference List
VIKING Life-Saving Equipment has won an order for eleven (11) METIS RIBs from the Hellenic Navy, in a second deal calling for the company’s Greek branch VIKING Norsafe Life-Saving Equipment Hellas S.A. to supply this daughter craft type to the Greek naval force.   The new RIBs, which will be deployed predominantly to support search and rescue operations on delivery over the summer of 2020, will replace craft currently used on board larger vessels in the Hellenic Navy’s fleet, including its ΜΕΚΟ-type frigates.   “I would like to congratulate our team for their dedication and hard work in putting together this successful tender,” said John Georgiadis Managing Director, VIKING Norsafe Life-Saving Equipment Hellas. “We were up against some very tough and well-established competitors but were able to meet and even exceed some very specific requirements from the client.”   The contract win followed an earlier successful commissioning of a pair of VIKING Norsafe METIS 600 units serving from the Helenic Navy’s new Fast Missile Launch Crafts (Roussen Class), Georgiadis added.   The VIKING Norsafe METIS RIB, which is robust enough to sustain top speeds of at least 30 knots, even fully loaded, comes complete with state-of-the-art navigation instruments. At between 6m and 7m in length, six of the latest RIBs will be fitted with a single outboard engine, with the other five featuring twin outboards. All 11 will be built at VIKING’s facility in Thiva, Greece, with the supplier also taking full responsibility for RIB technical support and maintenance.   “This is a great tender to win, and an important milestone that will further strengthen the position of the VIKING Norsafe METIS RIB and of VIKING Life-Saving Equipment in this market segment,” said Endre Eidsvik, VP Sales & Service of the VIKING Norsafe boats and davits division. “Being based on the very successful VIKING Norsafe METIS family of RIBs, these boats are easy to launch, highly maneuverable and versatile, and the ideal support tool for SAR operations.”
