Smackdown Fake Rankings, 08/28/2021
Men's singles division - babyfaces
Finn Balor
Big E (Mr. Money in the Bank)
Shinsuke Nakamura (WWE intercontinental champion)
Cesaro
Kevin Owens
Rick Boogs
Men's singles division - heels
Roman Reigns (WWE universal champion)
Seth Rollins
King Baron Super Fun Happy Corbin 64 & Knuckles
Apollo Crews
Sami Zayn
Commander Azeez
Heading into the Extreme Rules show on September 26, it looks like the key programs are Reigns vs. Balor, Big E vs. Corbin, Becky Lynch vs. Bianca Belair, and the Usos vs. the Street Profits. Other storylines involve the Mysterios potentially splitting up, and Seth Rollins deciding he needs yet another weird gimmick.
It looks like Cesaro is slotted with Chad Gable and Otis, and I don't see a tag partner for him. Nakamura is with Boogs, Crews is with Azeez, and Owens is talking up his history with Zayn.
An interesting story this week is that USA Network is reportedly unhappy that so so many top stars (John Cena, Edge, Brock Lesnar, and Becky Lynch) are with Smackdown, on Fox. I'm sure WWE is assuring them that they'll reshuffle the roster in October, but will that really make a difference? Lesnar and Lynch aren't getting moved so soon. Cena has one more date and then he's out making movies indefinitely. Reigns isn't moving except in exchange for one of the tippy-toppy, needly-movey guys on Raw, so that's a lateral move. Would Edge be enough to allay USA's concerns? Because I'm not sure anyone else on Smackdown is at that level.
Men's tag team division - babyfaces
The Street Profits - Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford
Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio
Men's tag team division - heels
The Usos - Jey Uso & Jimmy Uso (Smackdown tag team champions)
Alpha Academy - Chad Gable & Otis
Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode
If the Usos remain champions, we'll need some fresh babyface teams for them to fight. Nakamura & Boogs would fit the bill. If Owens and Zayn have some sort of reconciliation, I'm not convinced it would be as a face team, but who knows.
Women's singles division - babyfaces
Bianca Belair
Liv Morgan
Women's singles division - heels
Becky Lynch (Smackdown women's champion)
Carmella
Zelina Vega
I'm already hearing the "Becky's not a full heel, she's a tweener" stuff. Yeah, whatever. What counts here is that WWE categorizes her as a heel, and she's feuding with a babyface. Whether WWE can convince everyone to boo Lynch isn't my problem.
The big complaint here is that Bianca had no one to wrestle for months but Carmella and Zelina. Hopefully getting Liv and (eventually) Nami back on the show will help. But that's still just six singles women. If they'd beef that up to about ten, then this division wouldn't be so easily devastated by the occasional knee injury, or whatever happened to Sasha Banks. Of course, the deeper issue is that WWE thinks it makes sense to only have six women and present two of them (Carmella and Vega) as total losers.
Women's tag team division - babyfaces
Natalya & Tamina (WWE women's tag team champions)
Tegan Nox & Shotzi
So yeah, there are no heel teams. Over on Raw, Nikki ASH and Rhea Ripley are being positioned as the latest "wacky partners who inexplicably coexist" team, so I assume they'll be champions soon. Raw and Smackdown have one heel team between them, Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax, but they're already teasing a breakup there. I guess Carmella and Vega could team up, but that doesn't sound like a threat to the champions.
No TV matches in over 30 days: Naomi, Toni Storm
Part-time/semi-retired: Adam Pearce, Brock Lesnar, Edge, John Cena, Sonya Deville
Inactive
Sasha Banks ("unable to compete")
Bayley (left knee - unspecified injury)
I haven't seen anything on what happened to Sasha, so I'm inclined to think there's a legit medical issue. Assuming she's cleared soon, I think the smart move is to bring her back immediately after the Bianca/Lynch feud to go after the winner.
Everybody's wondering what happened to Toni Storm, since she just started six weeks ago, and Smackdown could use all the help it can get. What's frustrating that she may just not be medically cleared for some mysterious reason, and we'll never find out unless a reporter happens to ask the right person the right question.

In Kayfabe, after Dom joined Judgment Day
Someone talking to Seth Rollins: yeah who would have thought that the son of Rey Mysterio would cheat and fight so dirty?
Seth Rollins: *war flashbacks to summer 2020 and the feeling of Kendo Sticks to the back* yeahhh who would have guessed?
