Sexypink’s top ten of the decade
Sexypink chose the following Artists for this list. They are -: Ebony Patterson, Firelee Baez, Florine Demosthene, Hulda Guzman, Leasho Johnson, Roberta Stoddart, Sarah Knights, Sheena Rose, Marvin Bartley and Paul Anthony Smith. Many of the Artists chosen are from Jamaica. The talent coming from that country is staggering. I am writing this note because Tumble has removed the image I chose from the Photographer Marvin Barley. I am presently appealing it. The works are called  Marvin Bartley, Tragedies of Zong 1: Luke Collingwood’s Journey, and 2: The Gregson Family Dream (2007) and Master and Slave 2011. Do look for them online, they are worth it.

~SEXYPINK’s top 10 breakout Artists for the decade (2010-2019) I am a star struck fan of both Ebony and Firelee’s body of work. I don’t think that I need to say any more than that.

2018 turned out to be a historic year for contemporary Caribbean artists, with survey exhibitions and ground-breaking installations around the world. With so much important work from a new generation of voices, it’s difficult to pick just a few highlights. But we’ve rounded up a few artists from the Caribbean diaspora whose work this year will linger on for years to come, from emerging artists to landmark masters.

Ebony G. Patterson: ...for little whispers... From October 10, 2018 — April 7, 2019
In the BMA’s Berman Textile Gallery, Patterson creates an immersive installation featuring her work …and babies too… (2016)—a memorial to children killed in violent crimes. Elevated to waist-height, the glittering tapestry loaded with symbols of childhood is accompanied by 18 pairs of cast glass shoes, faux butterflies, and papier-mâché balloons in a plush pink environment.
Nearby in the BMA’s American Wing, a sculpture comprised of 150 hand-embellished toy guns opens a dialogue with Joshua Johnson’s painting Charles Herman Stricker Wilmans (c. 1804), examining how toys condition children for adult roles, uneven power relationships, and violent futures.
This exhibition is curated by Cecilia Wichmann, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art.
