Five reasons why the Eagles flamed out
Tumblr media
The Philadelphia Eagles were the rage of the 2022 NFL season. Behind the stellar play of quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Eagles took that next step to becoming the next darlings of the National Football League.  But alas, the memory bank is short and the league is about what have you done for me lately. The Eagles, in case you missed it, just completely flamed out after going 10-1 after starting the 2023 season where they left off. That is being a dominant team on both sides of the ball.
Tumblr media
Philadelphia Eagles running back D'Andre Swift (0) rushed for 1,049 yards during the 2023 NFL regular season. Photo credit: Mark Hammond/News4usonline.com Last season, Hurts and the Eagles kicked butts and took names, all the way up to Super Bowl LVII, where they came up just short of knocking off Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs off their championship perch.  In fact, for most of Super Bowl LVII, Hurts and the Eagles looked like they were the superior team. If not for a late defensive pass interference penalty, perhaps it would have been the Eagles being anointed the reigning Super Bowl champions.  As it was, Hurts and the Eagles gave Mahomes and the Chiefs a tremendous battle before falling 38-35 in one of the most exciting Super Bowl games in a very, very long time. That’s neither here nor there now for Hurts and his Philadelphia teammates.  That’s because the Tampa Bay Buccaneers officially canceled their season with a 32-9 win in an NFL Wild Card game. This outcome should not come as a surprise for folks who understand the language of sport and competition. No matter how great the competitor is you just can’t slide your way into postseason prosperity. The laws of nature don’t work that way.  It’s only fitting that Hurts and the Eagles would get embarrassed on national television in their final game of the season. Hurts and the Eagles have played like garbage for weeks now. They deserved the butt-whipping the Buccaneers handed to them. Now go home and regroup and figure things out.  Retired. Eagles center Jason Kelce calls it quits following Philadelphia getting worked and losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 32-9, in a Wild Card playoff game. Photo by Mark Hammond #EaglesNation pic.twitter.com/kYJ5ccMbG1— Dennis J. Freeman (@DennisJFreeman) January 16, 2024 Here are five reasons why the Eagles imploded.  DEFENSE  Against Tampa Bay, Philadelphia could not stop water if they had to. Tackling became a lost art for the Eagles against the Buccaneers. The Eagles gave up 426 yards in total offense to the Buccaneers. This game was only symbolic of how the defensive unit of the Eagles played this season. Last year, the Eagles defense produced 70 sacks. Philadelphia could only muster 43 sacks in 2023. And for good measure, the Eagles had the No. 2 defense in the regular season in 2022. In 2023, Philadelphia plummeted to 26th in the league. What a fall.   JALEN HURTS  For whatever reason, Hurts was not the same dude who took the NFL by storm with his breakout season in 2022. Yes, we know that Hurts was banged up with various ailments and injuries he was fighting through. However, if you’re going to be THAT GUY, that means you have to step up even when no one else can or is willing to do it. That’s why quarterbacks get paid the big bucks.  Hurts failed to elevate himself and his teammates to turn it up another notch. Against Tampa Bay, Hurts rushed one time for five yards. Why waste everybody’s time trying to be a pocket quarterback? Hurts didn’t use his legs enough to alter or break down an opponent's game, especially against the Buccaneers.   COACHING Well, what can you say? It speaks volumes when your team goes into the tank in the last part of the season and then your squad gets worked in the first game of the playoffs. It’s clear that while Hurts flourished under the current Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen, he has gone into a bland type of quarterback.  Offensive coordinator Brian Johnson has turned Hurts into another version of the Statue of Liberty. Even a 45-year-old Tom Brady had more mobility than what Hurts showed in 2023. And this leads us to Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni. After their debilitating flameout, the blame has to fall squarely on the shoulders of Sirianni. It almost feels like the Eagles quit on their head coach.
Tumblr media
Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Hasson Reddick (7) had an off year in 2023 with just 43 sacks. In 2022, the Eagles recorded 70 sacks and made it all the way to Super Bowl LVII. Photo credit: Mark Hammond/News4usonline.com RUN GAME Where the heck did Philadelphia’s run game disappear to? The Eagles turned Hurts into a one-trick pony, effectively cutting off their stealth running attack that guided them to Super Bowl LVII. In 2022, Eagles had the fifth-best rushing attack in the NFL (2,590 yards). There was some slippage in 2023 when Philadelphia dropped to the No. 8 slot in running the football as a team (2,190 yards).      This deficiency was noticeably glaring against the Buccaneers. The Eagles recorded just 42 yards running the football against Tampa Bay. When you produce a running attack like that you deserve to get bounced from the postseason. And your super-mobile quarterback cannot just run the football one time for five yards. What is that? Has Hurts gone too cool?  COMPLACENCY  It’s easy to let a Super Bowl appearance go to your head. Endorsement deals increase and they begin to take up valuable decision-making. Everyone’s pulling at you. The Eagles never did play with the same edge as they played with in 2022. This group never looked or played hungry.  It was more like they felt entitled. It showed on the football field. The Eagles played the game as if the red carpet was supposed to continue to roll out for them. And now, until proven otherwise, Hurts and the Eagles are just another one-hit wonder. [ad_1] In January of 2023, Carolina hired former Colts head coach Frank Reich ending a coaching search that primarily saw ownership interview offensive candidates. Former Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, then interim head coach Steve Wilks, former Lions head coach Jim Caldwell and now Colts head coach Shane Steichen were among those interviewed. Who might Carolina interview and target in this coaching search? 1. Lions offensive coordinator Ben JohnsonJohnson, 37, interviewed with Carolina during the last coaching search. His NFL career spans 12 seasons with two franchises: the Dolphins and Lions. After an impressive 2022 campaign that coincided with elevated play from quarterback Jared Goff, Johnson burst onto the radar. His resume has only grown stronger this season as the Lions offense has dragged the franchise to an 8-3 record. His work with Goff will not go unnoticed as the Panthers work to identify a candidate capable of getting the best out of No. 1 overall selection Bryce Young. 2. Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane WaldronWaldron, 44, is in his third season as offensive coordinator of the Seahawks after serving as Sean McVay's passing game coordinator for three seasons. His career includes two Super Bowl championships as a member of the Patriots. Seattle quarterback Geno Smith famously said "they wrote me off, I ain't write back" and Waldron is the architect of the offense that has re-invigorated the former second-round pick. He is a forward-thinking coach with innovative play designs. 3. Texans offensive coordinator Bobby SlowikThere is nothing more trendy in NFL circles than coaches with a background working under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan or McVay. Slowik, 36, was on the now infamous Washington coaching staff that included Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, former Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris, McVay and Shanahan. In addition to his impressive connections, Slowik has brought energy to a Texans offensive unit that has surprised everyone in the NFL. His work with C.J. Stroud is a feather in his cap as he enters the interview process. His father, Bob Slowik, spent 22 years in the NFL serving as defensive coordinator for the Bears, Browns, Packers and Broncos. 4. Ravens defensive coordinator Mike MacdonaldMacdonald spent seven seasons coaching in the Baltimore organization before Jim Harbaugh hired him as Michigan's defensive coordinator in 2021. The 36-year-old proved himself in that lone season with the Wolverines. His work in Ann Arbor led to John Harbaugh bringing him home to the Ravens. Following the 2021 season, Baltimore made the decision to move on from long-time defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and Macdonald took over in 2022. The Baltimore defense has not skipped a beat and adoration for Macdonald has spread. According to FTNFantasy, the Ravens are second in defensive DVOA, which measures efficiency and overall success. 5. Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod MayoMost believe that Mayo, 37, has been given assurances that he will take over for Bill Belichick when the time comes. After eight seasons playing under Belichick, Mayo was hired as inside linebackers coach in 2019. The Virginia native is a Super Bowl champion known for instilling grit and toughness into his unit. There has to be concern about hiring a Belichick disciple because that has rarely worked, but Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is the exception. Moore, 35, was interviewed as part of Carolina's search a year ago. His six year playing career took him to Detroit and Dallas. Jerry Jones hired him as quarterbacks coach in 2018. The following year, he was named offensive coordinator. After four seasons in that role, the team elected to make a move and the Chargers hired him in the same role. Los Angeles is eighth in offensive DVOA, according to FTNFantasy. They finished 15th the prior season. Kafka, 36, had also been interviewed by the Panthers last year. Some of the shine has been removed this season as a result of New York's offensive struggles. His work with Daniel Jones in Year 1 was widely praised. Kafka has been coaching in the league for seven years. His first five years were spent in Kansas City learning from head coach Andy Reid, who was also his head coach in Philadelphia when the Eagles selected the Northwestern quarterback in the fourth-round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Impactful Additions Shaping the AFC South Landscape
Tumblr media
As the new NFL season approaches, the AFC South sees a wave of changes that promise to redefine the division's dynamics. With the Titans' reign being challenged and new forces emerging, it's essential to highlight the ten most impactful additions that will shape the fate of each team by the end of 2023. 1. Texans HC DeMeco Ryans DeMeco Ryans' arrival as the Texans' head coach brings renewed hope to a franchise plagued by years of disappointment. Having played for the team from 2006 to 2011, Ryans' return to Houston resonates deeply with the city, elevating expectations for the future. With a history of leading strong defensive units, his expertise could be the key to transforming the Texans' struggling run defense. 2. Colts HC Shane Steichen Following a tumultuous 2022 season, the Colts seek stability with Shane Steichen as their head coach. Renowned for his offensive acumen, Steichen's task includes nurturing the development of quarterback Anthony Richardson. Drawing from his success in developing past talents like Jalen Hurts and Philip Rivers, Steichen's impact on the Colts' offense will be closely watched. 3. Texans QB C.J. Stroud The Texans' fortunes at quarterback take a hopeful turn with C.J. Stroud, the second overall pick. As Houston's potential long-term solution, Stroud's success could be instrumental in lifting the team from its prolonged rebuild, especially after losing Deshaun Watson. Read the full article

[ad_1] Getty Images Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson left Sunday's game against the Titans with a right shoulder injury, marking the third time in five weeks the first-round draft pick has been forced to the sidelines. Richardson suffered an AC joint injury, the Colts announced Monday. NFL Media reported more details, saying it's a Grade 3 sprain and that he could miss at least a month and possibly longer. Colts head coach Shane Steichen did not offer much on how long Richardson might be sidelined, only saying the signal-caller will miss "some time," via CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones.NFL Media reported the rookie was diagnosed with a Grade 3 AC joint sprain and could miss at least a month and possibly longer. While Steichen did not say how much time Richardson would miss, IR remains a possibility.Richardson received an MRI at an imaging center, according to CBS Sports HQ Senior NFL Insider Josina Anderson. Richardson, who wasn't hospitalized, will seek a second opinion regardless of the results of his initial scan, per Anderson.  Richardson stayed on the ground after falling on his right shoulder while being tackled by Tennessee's Harold Landry in the second quarter. He was then escorted to the locker room for further evaluation, with backup Gardner Minshew taking over under center. The Colts officially ruled Richardson questionable to return after his exit, then downgraded him to out early in the second half. Drafted fourth overall this spring, the Florida product previously sat out Week 3 with a concussion suffered the week prior. He also briefly left the Colts' season opener with an apparent lower-leg injury suffered late in Indianapolis' loss to the Jaguars. Minshew filled in as the team's starting QB against the Ravens, guiding Indy to an upset victory. He helped the Colts carry a tight lead into halftime against the rival Titans on Sunday, while Richardson left having gone 9 of 12 for 98 yards through the air.
