Beth enunciates {✔️} // {❌️} || Part of her audio-processing disorder makes the diagraph "th" very difficult for her to pronounce correctly, and sometimes she substitutes words/word order when she speaks partial pigin. What was your response to the last time your heart was broken?

Beth has never bitten back words harder than she does now. Better than going for a throat with all of her teeth, and not in any way a test bite. The first time her heart broke nearly killed her the way it woke her out of dead sleep with a pain so excruciating that she is still haunted by its ghost. She has no way to explain the relentless suffering of having a portion of her soul sheared off. Of knowing that the only way to mollify that perpetual emptiness is to surrender this life and with a hopeful prayer for the next. She isn't even sure there's supposed to be another one. It wasn't too much later that it broke again, and again, Beth had to give up another piece of herself. That one she's justified into oblivion. She says it was taking the higher road, that it was saving a life and a career that she wasn't even sure she could follow in the footsteps of and it was the mature choice. It might be more truthful if she just admitted that she'd run away to lick her wounds and hope no one noticed. This last time? Still fresh as winter slaughter now that they're on the eve of spring? She's cried new oceans into existence and tries to tell herself that it doesn't hurt. That it doesn't matter. That she is merely a function, and ultimately one that doesn't matter either, not in the grand scheme of the Universe. Of course... She wears her heart on her sleeve, where anyone can touch it. And no one wants to keep it. Walls rise faster than empires and each emotional brick is sealed with a mortar of shame and self-recrimination. The only hint that the question as struck a nerve is how glassy her eyes become. The little uptick of her chin as she swallows. The smile comes slow. Devoid of warmth even ice would shiver in its shadow. Her voice remains remarkably steady, the same just-barely-more-than-a-whisper that it ever is. "M' life is perfect, wha' makes you t'ink anyt'ing of mine's evah broken, much less my heart?" She tells herself she doesn't have one. It gives away the lie by throbbing in her throat and it is bitter, bitter, sweet.

Paint the Town Red || - 🍷: Beth maybe can't cook to save her life, but she has an excellent taste in wine. Often she'll hit up some of her favourite sommeliers for creative suggestions. Sometimes, she'll shop out of the family's cellars in the Hamptons or the Vineyard. But time and time again, she keeps coming back to her favourite; Amon-Ra. Keeping her meds in mind, Beth does try to limit herself to a glass or two after long hours at work, and when she's out and being social, she usually sticks to a fruity cocktail or two. Beth tends to be a happy and more romantic/dreamy than when she's sober. Sometimes, boundaries blur but she's never upset if someone reminds her of them. ~*~ 🥀: The Admiral is often the only person who can make Beth completely freeze before her instinct turns to fawning; the memories of growing up still too close to the surface and she fears the day that he finally puts hands on her, now that she doesn't have her brother to hide behind. In other situations with other people, Beth can't help but to push the line, see how mouthy she can actually get before she feels push back. Especially when she feels close and safe with the opposition. Beth tends to keep a cool head and steady nerve during a stressful situation and saves any fear or emotional breakdown until she's behind closed doors. Beth also goes to near any lengths to share that calm with others, and to support those who need it most. She is particularly good with young victims, and emotionally frail ones.

🚨: Despite there being actual photographic and video of Beth protesting at Mauna Kea, at the very gates of the White House, and the testimony somewhere of shark-fining vessels sabotaged/damaged, Beth has never actually been arrested and her background is scrubbed SO squeaky clean, that a surgeon could do his work on it. Maybe with the right glass of wine, with the right tone of voice, she'd be willing to give details if asked. ~*~

👠: Due to the nature of work, Beth will wear jeans or slacks while on duty and she will hate every second of it. The way the material rubs against her scar is infuriating, and she hates the constriction of it. During Court and on her off time she slips back into her floor length flowing skirts, romantic and airy blouses, or her collection of swimwear. When the house keeper hasn't brought her laundry in, she will use swimwear bottoms as underwear though it never occurs to her to be embarrassed about it. Being as diminutive as she is, she also rarely wears bras when she isn't at work or a social function. While she does have a closet full of designer clothing, she likes vintage pieces or ethically sourced, sustainable, women-supporting clothing brands with natural fibres. Her most signature item is the stars-and-moon ring her brother gave her on her 13th birthday. No matter what she wears, it's part of the ensemble. ~*~

🩸: Beth is the furthest thing from squeamish when it comes to blood. The Admiral is a neurosurgeon, her brother had been Pararescue, and she intended to go into medicine herself, also neurosurgery. She can be seated very quietly next to a body that doesn't resemble itself any longer, and still eat her lunch, while discussing the finer points of injury. She's always been the sort who put a cut finger into her mouth, or would, on occasion maybe lick a shaving nick or a lip that she's bitten maybe a little too enthusiastically. Beth also donates her own blood regularly, and is O-negative.

Are you hard to love?

She could look no more stricken than if she'd been slapped. Maybe she had. In her soul where no mark would take visible hold. This is why she doesn't do therapy. This is why she stalwartly refuses to answer certain questions from certain types of journalists. Why she doesn't invite a two-way dialogue on her social media. Thankfully, there's no one to witness the anonymous question posed her, and no one who could hear the answer in the sharp little gasp. Because the answer is simple as it is brutal; she is hard to love. Andy had to because he was her brother. Jay chose to because they'd been friends for nearly half their lives. Father Vincent loves her because as a representative of the Church and of God, he has to love everyone. The Admiral certainly didn't and took every opportunity to prove it. Her own mother had abandoned her over two decades ago and never looked back. People come and go in her life but mostly appear only when they need something; healing, cash, a place to stay, some sort of validity that they are seen and understood and they go as easily as the tide when it recedes. She's just background in their stories, after all.

Sometimes, not even Beth can love herself. Would be the first person to list out her flaws, her inequalities, all the reasons why people are justified in their casting her off. She would, too, if she could. She types a single word into the reply portion of the message and sends it humming along the strands of the digital Web, part of C'et's creation. Then she closes the laptop and goes to curl up on her couch, where she won't rise for days. Yes.
