A large, pink stuffed rabbit with soft, curly fur lay nestled in Han Yoojin’s arms. Beside him, a sky-blue pony plushie, mane long and flowing, lay propped against Han Yoohyun. Squeezed between the two people was a fairly sizable spotted dog, as well.

Bak Yerim pushed her phone forward, angling it towards the two that were half-buried beneath the dolls. Taking great care to change the perspective this way and that, flipping through various filters, she went on to snap several pictures. But even as the sound of the shutter rang out(1), neither of the two showed any signs of waking.

“Chirpie-yah, go sit on top of Han Yoohyun’s head, would you.”

- 삐약.

“No–I didn’t mean ahjussi.” 

Chirpie, who had plopped down on top of Han Yoojin’s head, gently fluttered down to land on the remote control. Expertly manipulating its tiny feet, it stomped down on the power button with what appeared to be practiced ease. But as it began to flip through the channels, it was interrupted by Bak Yerim snatching the remote away, before promptly turning the TV back off. 삑, Chirpie let out a reproachful sound, turning to squint up at Bak Yerim.

“Nuh-uh. Ahjussi’s been telling you to reduce your TV screen time, hasn’t he.”

- 삐약!

“Go play with Velare instead, with your toys.”

The baby chick, who had been attempting to stage a protest, gave up and flew away. Peace was still quietly curled up at Han Yoojin’s feet, as he had been all this time. Bak Yerim, after spending a while simply looking at the two brothers laying next to each other in silence, got up at length and headed towards her personal bathroom. Atop of the sink adjacent to the shower room(2), a few cosmetic items–pristine, having only been taken out of their outer packaging–lay untouched. They had been from a batch of gifts that had been sent to her, likely in the hopes of generating PR, that she had elected to keep because the cases had appealed to her. 

Collecting two of the lipsticks, Bak Yerim picked up a few doll hair accessories and hair ties as well.

“I’d wanted to try something like this once~”

After the Dungeons had appeared, school field trips had become a relic of the past. After all–if a Dungeon Break were to occur while the children were off grounds, it would be difficult to be able to guarantee their safety, it was reasoned.(3) And though the climate had vastly improved as of late, there were many who still balked at the prospect of sending their children to commute to school at all, even under close supervision. Countless hakwons(4) had been forced to shutter their doors one after the other, lacking students to populate them. Though there were a few who had managed to emerge more successful than ever, too; through the installation of emergency shelters and the hiring on of low-ranked Hunters, by advertising ‘greater safety than leaving them on their lonesome at home.’

Bak Yerim gently floated up in the air, and headed back towards the living room. The brothers were still fast asleep, completely dead to the world around them. Their expressions held a great familiarity. Initially, it had been remarked upon that the two hardly seemed to resemble each other. There were a few inherited characteristics here and there that were pointed out as a reason blood doesn’t lie, but the atmosphere they exuded were too different.

A dispassionate S-rank Hunter of unmatched strength, who stood out above all others despite his young age, and the seemingly troubled, anxiety-ridden un-Awakened who brimmed over with malaise. When, on occasion, these two would happen to appear juxtaposed in the news cycles or on broadcasts, the general consensus was so even if you come from the same family, being an S-rank made you different, after all. 

But, nowadays–it was said more often, that the two resembled one another. Han Yoojin had found security, and Han Yoohyun had softened around the edges. The similar expression they donned as they smiled seemed truly reflective of brothers, after all.

So then, what about me. Unconsciously, Bak Yerim squished her own cheeks together with the palm of her hands. It was said that, once you lived together long enough, familiar traits would rub off on each other–even if you had begun as a complete ‘outsider’. She thought back to the Chuseok broadcast that had aired. Had she borne similarities to them, there? There had been a multitude of comments left that said they had resembled a family. That they ‘looked good together,’ that they ‘seemed to blend together seamlessly.’

Lightly shrugging her shoulders, Bak Yerim summoned a small droplet of water at the tip of her finger. Made to follow the movements of her extended finger, 휙, the water droplet swished through the air to splash against the side of Han Yoohyun’s face. Normally, even if he had been asleep, he would have woken to dismiss the drop of water before it could even reach his cheek; but right now, there hadn’t been so much as a twitch in response.

“Right, then–no chance of reprisal this time, eh.”

A bright grin on her face, Bak Yerim placed a frilly hairpin–layered with multiple ribbons, held together by a red cubic gem in the center–on lightly curled dark locks. Slanting it slightly to the right, she regarded her handiwork with a satisfied smile. 

All she had done was pin a hair clip on a sleeping person’s head. But that very person in question was Han Yoohyun. The only ones capable of placing a ribbon in his hair unscathed was either herself, or Ahjussi. That in itself was a great point of pride.

“Will he throw a hissy fit when he’s up, I wonder?”

Maybe she should prepare a reservoir of water in advance, just in case. He’d definitely detest it. But that would be it. The hair pin might go up in flames, but Bak Yerim would remain unharmed. Even if she were to play mischief like so, it wouldn’t result in their falling out, or going their separate ways. There wasn’t any pressure to walk on eggshells(5). Most likely, they would sit at the sofa and watch TV while eating dinner, as though nothing had happened. 

This time, taking off the cap to the lipstick, Bak Yerim set her sights on Han Yoojin. The base amount of affection she held for Han Yoojin greatly eclipsed the regard she held for Han Yoohyun, of course. It was to the point where there was hardly a reason to draw comparison. As much affection she had received, she returned in all in kind.

Only–within her relationship with Han Yoojin, there lurked an inevitable note of uncertainty. A love that had abruptly fallen into her lap from the skies one day, out of the blue. Because you’re an S-rank Awakened; such an explanation was hardly sufficient. Not to mention, Han Yoojin found himself constantly surrounded by exceptional individuals. Han Yoojin’s affections for Bak Yerim were unquestionable, true–but it hardly served as proof that he considered Bak Yerim to be an irreplaceable entity in his life.

And what had appeared so suddenly, might disappear as unceremoniously as well.

The one who had been able to put to rest that anxiety she had so resolutely tried to push away, had been none other than Han Yoohyun. 

Han Yoohyun had disliked Bak Yerim. Since his Hyung held affection for her. And yet, Han Yoohyun had accepted Bak Yerim. Because she held affection his Hyung. Han Yoohyun had come acknowledge Bak Yerim. As she had proved herself to hold the ability to protect his Hyung.

It may have been a relationship wrought entirely with Han Yoojin as its core, but such a thing only instilled in Bak Yerim a greater measure of security and comfort. Han Yoohyun, who had devoted his entire being to Han Yoojin, was scrupulous about everything relating to him as a result. And someone who was so punctilious as he was, had permitted Bak Yerim to stand by his Hyung’s side.

“Would this color be a better choice?”

Bak Yerim carefully considered the lipstick colors in turn. Even if it was simply for a prank, she wanted to choose the color that suited him best while she was at it, after all.

Han Yoohyun would most definitely fixate on his Hyung’s lips before he would even notice the clip in his own hair, besides. And he might gripe about it, but he wouldn’t push Bak Yerim away as a result of it. Since his trust in her was great enough that he would entrust not only Han Yoojin’s safety to her, but his own as well.

As for Bak Yerim, when it came to Han Yoohyun–she, too. She would be able to say as much, without any hesitation. That they were comrades who held the greatest amount of faith in the other. Including Peace, the three of them held the same objective, and so moved with their hearts as one. 

To protect Han Yoojin; to preserve the life they shared together at present. If Han Yoojin were at stake, if it were in order to keep him safe, all three of them would readily leave the other two behind without a single glance back, if necessary. And thus, they three were compatriots united in that aspect. 

With a solidarity that surpassed even that of biological family, Bak Yerim was able to find peace. She knew very well that no one would ever come between the brothers, or to hold precedence above the other to them. On occasion, she would even wonder if it was alright for her to intrude in their space the way she had done, so entwined were they with each other.

But Bak Yerim’s place, her position, was assured–and her world was rapidly widening further. Because there was a steadfast home to which she could return, she was able to venture out without fear. Part of the reason she had been so keen to go on the trip to Japan, without a host of worries holding her back, was because she’d had that sense of security reassuring her.

“I think it turned out well! Don’t you think, Peace-yah.”

Peace, peering up at Han Yoojin’s face with a questioning air, cocked his head to the side. After a brief deliberation, Bak Yerim left and returned with a bottle of nail polish, once more. Uncurling Han Yoojin’s right hand, using a translucent pastel pink that held a slight pearlescent sheen, she painted his nails with great care and concentration. 

Having proceeded to paint a set of Han Yoohyun’s nails as well, she looked at the hands laying side-by-side; and then, she painted the nails on one of her hands as well.

“Peace, d’you want your nails painted too? Here, put your paw up here.”

Peace, after a slight moment of hesitation, held out one of his front paws. A brush settled on one of the curved claws that extended outwards. She momentarily considered whether it was something that was alright to use on an animal–but well, since he was an S-rank monster with a far greater constitution than any human, it didn’t seem like it would harm him.

“It’s the same color as Ahjussi’s.”

- 크흥.

“Then–now, for the most important part.”

The marker-ing(6). Fighting to push down the instinctive tug of the corners her lips, Bak Yerim solemnly uncapped the lid of the thick felt-tip marker.

“What should I write for him. For starters, it should be ‘Hyungcon’ on his forehead. No, wait, he might like that too much.”

He might even go strolling around with it proudly displayed, actually. There was a fairly good chance of that happening, when it came to Han Yoohyun. Then, what should she write instead. What was something that might piss off Han Yoohyun. As she was contemplating, suddenly.

- Chirp! Bad lizard!

All of a sudden, a blue bird appeared in a flurry of angry squawking. And immediately after, Irin materialized on top of Han Yoojin’s shoulder and began to shout back.

- Go away!

- Chirp! Ch–irp!

Flapping furiously, Eunhae dive-bombed at the crimson lizard and bit down hard on his tail. Whipping his body around, Irin attempted to snap back at Eunhae, lunging at the other. In a tangle of limbs, the two tumbled down onto Han Yoojin’s lap.

“...and what’re the two of you doing?”

- It started things first!

- Ch–irp! Lizard bad!

“Don’t fight, don’t fight. Why’re these kids suddenly doing this?”

Bak Yerim attempted to calm the two down, despite being out of the loop. After a lengthy period of huffing and puffing, both Eunhae and Irin returned to their respective owners. And then, not long after.

“Hyung!”

Han Yoohyun’s eyes snapped open, and Han Yoojin woke, too. But unlike Han Yoohyun, who hastily pushed himself up, Han Yoojin lost consciousness once again, nearly as soon as he’d roused. Startled, Bak Yerim called out to Han Yoojin.

“Ahjussi? Ahjussi! What’s wrong!”

- 끄우응!

“Go and fetch the emergency kit. ..his lips–lipstick?”

Han Yoohyun spoke, quickly taking stock of Han Yoojin’s condition. Peace fretted from where he was, restless, and Chirpie and Velare drew closer as well. Bak Yerim, who had immediately jumped to retrieve the emergency kit even in her flustered state, began to question him. 

“What’s going on? What happened in there!”

“Overexertion.”

“Huh?”

“Aside from me–some entities stronger than ourselves broke in, and.. Hyung, hyung! Wake up for a bit, you need to disable your poison resistance.”

Opening the emergency kit to take out a syringe filled with an antipyretic shot, Han Yoohyun continued speaking.

“‘He’ mentioned that he might be weakened for about a day or so.”

“A day? Will ahjussi be alright?”

“For the time being. We were instructed to avoid potions or healers, and to admit him to an ordinary hospital for now.” 

Han Yoohyun administered the shot to Han Yoojin. It was a specialized antipyretic, that was formulated with ingredients that would be unaffected by poison resistance; but as a result, it possessed reduced efficacy as well. Bak Yerim, who had been dazedly observing the proceedings, suddenly snapped to attention and whipped out her cellphone.

“An ‘ordinary hospital’–well. But even then, wouldn’t a designated Hunter-use hospital be the better option? I’ll give the Seseung Guild Leader a call.”

“The Seseung Guild Leader?”

Preoccupied though he was with waking Han Yoojin, Han Yoohyun asked skeptically.

“Bak Yerim–you have his contact information?”

“For emergency use. He asked me to reach out, if something bad happened to ahjussi. In any case, Seseung General Hospital would be safe, right.”

I’m calling, then, said Bak Yerim, and pressed the call button. Soon after, the person on the other side of the line picked up.

“Seseung Guild Leader-nim, sir!”

[ What might the matter be, Little Miss. ] 

“What d’you think, sir. Ahjussi needs to be admitted to a hospital! But we’re not allowed to use healers or potions on him.”

After a brief period of silence, a long sigh faintly floated over from the receiver. 

[ I shall appoint a helicopter to serve as transport, so do ready yourselves to meet it from the rooftop garden. The details, I shall gather from the hospital. ]

“Yes sir, thank you kindly, sir. Han Yoohyun, let’s get a move-on!”

Han Yoohyun gathered his hyung into his arms. The fever reducer seemed to have taken effect; Han Yoojin’s eyes sluggishly opened.

“Yoohyun, -ah. Yerimie…….”

“Ahjussi! I’m here, sir!”

“Hyung, your poison resistance!”

“It’s nothing too bad, so don’t fret.”

“I think not worrying will be pretty hard, but I’ll try not to go overboard with it, sir. You’re the one who shouldn’t be fretting, ahjussi.”

Giving a small nod, Han Yoojin turned off his poison resistance and fell unconscious once more. Peace, Chirpie, and Velare all trailed behind as the two exited their home. Bak Yerim scooped up Chirpie and Velare into her arms.

“He wouldn’t actually be in dire straits, would he?”

“...don’t know.”

“What d’you mean you don’t know!”

“There was a Transcendent there I hadn’t met before. I’m not certain whether he can be trusted.”

Han Yoohyun’s expression soured faintly. The ‘Young Chaos.’ It seemed as though Han Yoojin had already come to trust in him a fair bit, but Han Yoohyun had his reservations. Were he in need of aid, he would take it if proffered; but it didn’t mean that he found him trustworthy. Rather, wariness took precedence.

Someone who was capable of snatching Hyung away with nary a moment’s notice. And in addition, Han Yoojin’s decision to forego the offer of safety only served to increase his own sense of guilt, and feelings of aversion towards the Young Chaos.

“...did something weird go and attach itself to ahjussi again?”

“...yeah.”

There wasn’t a need for further discussion. The two breathed a long sigh in unison. Arriving at the rooftop garden, the two waited for the promised helicopter to appear; Han Yoohyun turned to fix Bak Yerim with a faintly reproachful look.

“Bak Yerim, you being in possession of the Seseung Guild Leader's personal number.”

“I told you, it was just for emergency use, for ahjussi’s sake. Since ahjussi gets himself into hot water frequently, and you, Han Yoohyun, aren’t inclined to keep a line of communications open with people you don’t trust. Only official channels. I have Section Chief Song-nim’s, too. And Hyuna unnie’s as well, of course.”

Do you think I’m like you, Han Yoohyun, Bak Yerim said tartly, looking at her phone screen.

“Do I need to show you my contact list?”

“Unnecessary.”

“Honestly, who other than me would have the patience to deal with this obstinate Guild Leader-nim. Bak Yerim, you really are an angel among men.”

“All I need is hyung.”

“Yes sir, of course sir. I think it’s been permanently etched into my eardrums by now. Should I write it across your forehead for you? Frankly, you should just go ahead and get it tattooed. How’s ahjussi’s condition looking?”

“His fever’s gone down somewhat.”

Just then, the helicopter arrived. The crew that disembarked from the helicopter that landed on the rooftop took a look at Han Yoohyun and startled momentarily, taken aback. Upon realizing where their gazes had been drawn to–ah, Bak Yerim quickly shot out a hand to snatch away the hair pin that was clipped onto Han Yoohyun’s hair. Crack, the hair pin crumpled into an unrecognizable shape inside Bak Yerim’s fist. 

“...what was that.”

“Nothing, it’s nothing at all. Just something that was caught in your hair–did you not notice?”

Shooting her a knowing look that said he’d known very well, but had simply elected to ignore it, Han Yoohyun began to walk away. And soon, the helicopter took off into the air.

Initially there were three cabins installed (the ship was manufactured for a crew of up to six), but early on she removed most of the partition between the 'Captain's' cabin and the adjoining one, increasing her available living space. The Nocturne isn't just a transport vessel anymore, it's her home, and as such nothing has been left to the blank utilitarian design it started off with.

Past the foot of the bed is an access door to the Refresher, also modified to contain a full-size jetted tub as well as the shower equipped for both water and sonic use.

The window is transparisteel, and during flight a double layer of armored shutters close over it and any other viewports that might otherwise be vulnerable points.

Built into the 'desk' area is a remote control panel (there are several of these around the ship) that allows her to access sensors, engines, weapons and shields from wherever she happens to be on board. It would be awkward to try and fly the ship from these, but in an emergency she can get a view outside, start the engines and get the shields up before making a run for the cockpit.

The 'spare' cabin next door is ... nice. Much more comfortable than the average crew bunk on a freighter, as anyone using it is likely a client or a guest of some kind, but not so adapted as Thera's own.

Prom Night

Jason felt a little nervous as he knocked on Salim's door. All through the planning of this evening, he was second-guessing. He felt ridiculous in his tuxedo; the neighbors were probably wondering what was going on and why there was a limo idling in the street. But then the door opened and Jason decided yeah, this was a good idea after all.

Salim was wearing a tuxedo like Jason, bow-tie slightly crooked. The cut of his outfit was a little off in places: his sleeves were a tad short, his slacks secured by a worn belt that clashed with the fancy tux. Jason smiled seeing that. When they discussed this over the phone, he assured Salim that rented tuxedos weren't likely to fit properly. It was all part of the experience.

“Jason…” Salim stared at him, mouth slightly open. He stared for so long Jason started fidgeting.

“Fuck, man, I don't look that weird, do I?”

“No, no, of course not. It's just… I don't think I've ever seen you without your hat.”

“Fuck off,” Jason retorted. His lip twisted. Salim's explanation disappointed him, though he didn't want to think about why. “I got ya something,” he mentioned to get the evening back on track. He produced a flower and carefully pinned it to pocket on Salim's tux. While he was there, he reached to fix Salim's bow-tie.

“Was I supposed to get you a flower?”

“Well, I ain't exactly an expert, but I think whoever asks gets the flowers. You can pin mine on me, though,” Jason added, holding out the other flower.

“They match,” Salim observed as he pinned it on. His fingers caressed the spot before withdrawing, Jason's body thrumming from the brief contact. He stamped the feeling back down. “Now what?” Salim asked him.

“We take a picture together.” Jason moved to stand beside the other, their cheeks pressing close so they could both be in the shot. It would've been easier having someone take the picture for them, but no way did Jason want to go to the neighbors and ask. Instead, he angled the camera as best he could before clicking the shutter.

That done, they headed to the limo and climbed inside. Jason had been in awe when he saw the interior for the first time. The seats were comfortable with a decent amount of leg-room; there was a stereo system for music; there was a remote to control the lighting and fan, and to open the sun-roof; the mini-bar was stocked with drinks both alcoholic and virgin. There were even snacks if they got hungry. He glanced over for Salim's reaction and was pleased that the other man looked just as stunned.

“This is so fancy, Jason.”

“That's the idea.” He gave a signal for the driver to start moving and then scooted back to settle next to Salim. “All that shit is complementary,” Jason mentioned, nodding to the snacks and drinks, “so go nuts.” Salim hesitated only a moment before taking a non-alcoholic drink. Jason did the same, tapping the bottles together. “Cheers.”

“Cheers,” Salim echoed. Their gazes lingered until Jason broke away. He busied himself by fiddling with the stereo system. He got some music going, turning it down so they could still chat. “So tell me more about prom,” Salim urged him.

“Not much else to it,” Jason shrugged. “There's dancing, and at the end of the night they announce prom king and queen. Then everyone goes off to party. I donno, it felt kinda grown up at the time.”

“Who did you go with?”

“I didn't have a date.” Jason's ears went pink. “I went with a bunch of friends. We all carpooled in a van. It was fun: we had some good music and I got to feel fancy for the first time in my life.”

“It sounds special,” Salim mused. “I only got dressed up for weddings when I was a teenager. Thank you for asking me to do this.”

“I figured you should have some kind of prom experience,” Jason answered. “The good parts, anyway: the limo, the fancy clothes, the music…”

“The dancing?” Salim suggested. Jason felt heat on his face. He was being so stupid about this. Tonight was meant to be fun, to give Salim a taste of what prom was like. Salim wasn't actually his prom date.

“Sure,” Jason nodded, hoping he sounded flippant enough. “But if we're gonna dance, we gotta find a good place for it.”

It took a bit of driving but they eventually found a place that seemed good enough. Jason and Salim got out of the car, Jason cranking up the music inside the limo loud enough for them to still hear. There was some brief awkwardness as they figured out where to put their hands, but once the music started they got into a rhythm. Jason's pulse took a little longer to settle and even when it did, butterflies still fluttered in his stomach.

He could tell himself any number of lies and try to stomp the feeling down, but the fact still remained that he was dancing to romantic music with his arms around Salim. The older man guided Jason along with a faint smile on his lips. His eyes never left Jason's face, his hands warm and strong where they rested. He had such beautiful, dark eyes.

The song ended and in the silence before the next track began, Jason tried to back away. Salim's fingers twitched, shifting ever so slightly before affirming the grip.

“Jason,” he started. He immediately fell quiet when the music started. This song was much faster. The tension seemed to visibly ease between them.

Jason and Salim started dancing again. The next few songs were all fast numbers so by the time another slow song rolled around, the men were breathless and needing a break.

“So how do we decide on the prom king?” Salim wondered. Jason pursed his lips in thought. Between the two of them, Salim would have been the obvious choice in an actual vote. But if he said so, he knew Salim would argue that Jason should be the one.

“No reason why it can't be both of us,” Jason reasoned. “It'd be kinda weird not to; we're the sword and the shield.”

“That's a good point,” Salim agreed. “What happens now?”

“Well, usually the king is given a crown and a sash, then the king and queen dance. But I didn't think to get a crown.”

“Don't party supply stores sell paper crowns?” Salim mused. “We could go buy them.” Jason closed his eyes and pushed down the affection swelling in his heart. After a moment he opened his eyes again.

“Sure, let's go.”

They had to be getting a lot of strange looks when their limo pulled up in front of a party supply stores. Two grown men in tuxedos buying paper crowns… Who knew what people thought of it? Jason found he didn't actually care: he was having so much fun with Salim. They waited until they were back in the limo before crowning each other.

“I knew you would be wearing something on your head eventually,” Salim teased.

“I like hats, so sue me,” Jason grunted. “I get sunburned easily!”

“That explains the freckles.” Still with a teasing gleam in his eye, Salim reached up to brush his thumb across Jason's cheek. Jason went still and his heart skipped a beat in his chest. Salim's expression softened, his fingers moving to gently cup Jason's cheek.

It was hard to breathe. There was still music playing over the limo speakers but Jason barely heard it. He wasn't aware of moving but somehow he and Salim were much closer together now. Then their lips were touching, the warmth of it spreading over his face in a blush before moving through the rest of his body. His mind went completely blank. It wasn't until the kiss ended that Jason realized he just sat there the whole time.

“Did I misunderstand something?” Salim worried. “Forgive me if--”

“No,” Jason cut him off. He gripped onto the lapel of Salim's tux and tugged him into another kiss. Their lips bumped together clumsily before they got a better angle. Salim's hand moved down to Jason's throat before sliding around to the back of his head. Jason shuddered a little and tightened his grip on Salim's lapel.

For the next few minutes all Jason knew was the taste of Salim's lips against his. The kisses were slow and simple to let them learn each other. Salim's fingers brushed the small hairs on the back of Jason's neck, making him shudder again. He moved his hand up to anchor onto Salim's shoulder and pull them closer together. As the kissing continued Jason kept inching them closer. And still it came as a surprise when his thigh brushed against Salim's.

“This is such a fuckin' prom cliché,” he grunted.

“What is?” Salim wondered.

“Makin' out with the prom king in the back of a limo.”

“Well, you did want me to have the full experience,” Salim reasoned. He pressed a kiss onto Jason's cheek. “I wanted to kiss you long before tonight, you know,” he confessed. “But you truly made this magical. I couldn't resist any longer.” Jason swallowed, his face turning a darker red.

“All this time I been tryin' not to feel this way, and you felt it too.” His lips moved into a smirk. “And all it took was the two of us dressin' up like fuckin' penguins.” Salim stared at him for a moment, blinking.

“Mood ruined.”

“What?” Jason gaped.

“No, I'm sorry, that joke was too terrible,” Salim said, deadpan.

“Asshole!” Jason huffed. “Just for that, I'm takin' your crown back!” He reached for it but Salim pulled away.

“You can't do that. I'm the prom king.”

“Well I just declared prom a fuckin democracy!”

They playfully wrestled a bit, arguing back and forth, and eventually dissolved into kissing again. Jason never felt happier.

“Of course I’d be good for you, Miss Camile.”

The air of Malory’s office always had a horrible habit of being stale. No matter what he did- the windows couldn’t open, no, of course not. They wouldn’t risk someone trying to bash their brains against the cement ten floors below. “But sir, you and I both know that I am more well-versed in this position to be delegated the role of assistant -” Camile offered, a last ditch attempt to persuade the older man. Malory sat in his chair, arms tucked in front of him as he stared out the window. All she could see of him was the top of the back of his head, and the back of his office chair. “ Advisor .” He replied.

“Advisor?” She echoed. 

“Technically, your role is advisor.” He spun in his chair, giving her an amused glance. But her eyes lingered on the gray hair, the bags under his eyes, the age worn into his skin from the constant stress and weight of his position. He’d be the first one to say to her “You can only hide so much with an IV line and a day trip to the medspa.” and, she supposed he was right. He looked his age. A death sentence in this industry.

“Never train your downfall. No offense dear, but you don’t exactly scream the type to be gunning for someone’s position. It makes you perfect for this transition. Someone quiet and willing to do the work assigned without the gusto to steal the rug from under them- if that makes much sense. It’s a compliment under all of those layers.”

“He’ll be here momentarily.” He sighed, reaching over to grab hold of the remote that controlled the shade mechanism for his window, sending the shutters to slowly pull themselves over the sunlight. Leaving them to bathe in fluorescents. She nodded, glancing to the door and anxiously tapping on the folder in her hand. “You know,” Malory offers, the wrinkles in his forehead forming as he grimaced for a moment. “Just…” The sound of a knock- three distinct and firm knocks against the office door. His eyes locked with Camiles for a moment, before letting out a breath, closing his eyes and hardening his gaze at the door. “Come in.” In walked a man dressed in a tight fitting, pressed to all hell suit. A dark navy that was nearly black- freshly polished shoes. Neat and styled black hair, dark brown eyes and a narrow, angular face. As soon as he entered the room, she felt his gaze size her up- scanning her from top to bottom- hair to shoe. It made the hair stand up on the back of her neck, if only for a moment before he broke the tension and smiled. A warm, inviting smile- an extended hand. She stood up, watching as He gave a firm handshake to Malory, turning to her and cupping her hand with a light squeeze. 

“Pelant, it’s wonderful to meet you, Miss Ford. Malory has sung your praises on how you’ll be assisting me in the onboarding process.” His voice was confident, warm. Inviting. For a moment, she forgot to let go of his hand- before quickly pulling it back down to her side. Offering back a smile and a nod, “Of course Mister Pelant, I’ve already taken the liberties of preparing these documents for you to help onboard the carryover clients as well as get you acquainted with our current base.”

He nods, taking the folder. 

Maybe, he wouldn’t be too bad.

The weekend had finally graced its presence onto the work week, meaning that Camile could finally go to bed on Friday night knowing that she wouldn’t have to wander her way into work in the morning and hear about how the world was falling apart- at least for two more days. As long as no one called her saying that the office was on fire. Then, of course, as an advisor , she’d mock herself mentally, she would be obligated to go and fix the mess. Pelant wasn’t horrible, but he wasn’t Malory. Two days into his acclimation at the firm she could put money on the fact that there was something off about the man. He was never a hair out of place, everything perfect, kind words and sweet talking that at the moment felt like honey could be dripping from his mouth.

He was kind, he gave praise and compliments to the team working under him. In depth analysis of strategies to make the workflow better, introducing and onboarding a file of new clients in a much smoother manner than she’d ever seen. He would even randomly have his assistant swing by and drop off coffee. She’d offer to pay him back twice now, but each time he outright refused, that honey thick tone projecting back to her that “I could never! Take it as a token of my gratitude for being such a great teammate.”

She should be grateful, really. He’d been nothing but kind and supportive. And the praise had tickled the back part of her brain- maybe it was a good arrangement. Maybe Malory was right and this was the perfect setup for her, it complimented her personality. She was meant to help with important things, do important things. From the background . 

Productivity was never the number one goal after coming off of a hard work week, she cleaned a bit, watched some TV, and just tried to relax. Craning her head back to look at the kitchen became a daunting task in itself- and she could never justify the cost of having food delivered. No, that’s just a waste of hard earned cash. She could walk. It’s the city after all- there’s that sushi place she liked not five minutes from here.

Her eyes lingered on her coffee table, the sound of the baking show fading out of her mind and into a low drone in the background. Three little bottles, an empty wine glass, and a box of chocolates sat on the table mocking her. 

One of them was bright green- key lime. Another pink, strawberry lemonade. White plastic labels and lids meant Pina colada. Maybe when she went to grab some food she could swing by the corner store and grab something sweet and light to drink- a bottle of wine. Not the crappy little bottles. She really didn’t have a reason to justify buying them- they should make her sick to smell. She shouldn’t want to buy them, she knows. She knows better.  

Her phone chimed, screen lighting up and a message notification displaying on the screen.

Chris Pelant- 

I’m going to need you to come in, have some documents that need processing before midnight.

She stared at the screen, blinking a few times in disbelief.

She closed the folder, pushing through her office door and making her way through the floor to Pelant’s new office, curtly knocking on his door and breaching the threshold as he called her in. “I’m getting ready to head out for the weekend. Does anything else need to be done?” She asked, smiling at him as he waved her in and motioned for her to sit. “No, we’ve really been crushing it this week, and all thanks to you- you’ve been such a team player! We’re basically caught up for the next month! Enjoy your weekend!”

She groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose and closing her eyes so hard she could hear the strain in her ears. It was just a mishap- these errors always occur. It always happens and it's no one's fault. 

Until it happened the next day.

And the next weekend.

And the next.

She blinks, and she hasn’t had a weekend in two months . 

Because she’s being a team player. Supporting everyone- we couldn’t do it without you! Her vital help to the team, when it’s small things. Processing errors that should’ve been caught days ago- not with him leisurely working on the weekends to ‘catch up on emails’. Who was emailing on Sunday morning at 5am? She wasn’t and the last she checked, there weren’t any foreign clients that would warrant a conversation outside of normal business hours- let alone the normal time zone.

Not many people would be working in the office when she came back, one or two at most. Usually the accountants catch up on billing and input expense receipts. She’d catch the tail end of some guy, always clad in the most downright sinfully tight black suit she’d ever seen- tighter than Pelant’s by far. He’d be dropping off the files Pelant would then hand her, and by the time she’d open the door to her office and try making her way to his, the man would already be in the elevator leaving.

She was tired. To her bones. Her fingers hurt- and she felt bad for even complaining that her fingers hurt. People worked real, hard, manual labor jobs with bone crushing work and she was sniveling and crying over the joints in her fingers. 

It was evening, the sun not yet set but the air cooling from the afternoon sun. The park was quiet, a few people on walks going about their own days and journeys. Her eyes scanned the park, looking for a familiar figure on the bench they seemed to have claimed as their meeting spot.

She stood in front of the bench, eyes glancing over at the trash can with a remnant of one of their previous meetings. Brown paper bag, black plastic back with a horribly printed smiley face on the center of it.

“Ms. Camile! Hard day at work?” 

She nearly jumped out of her skin. She could feel the warmth of his skin behind her, and she turned- craning her neck up to lock eyes with bright blue. Taking a stride backwards and huffing- “You need to stop fucking sneaking up on me, it’s rude.” There was a tang of anger to the end of her words, over the fact that she hadn’t heard him approach. She’d been actively looking for the man yet he still seemed to sneak up on her whenever she went searching for him. “Sorry hen, I forget myself sometimes.” He breathes the words out- and they drip with sweetness. Like maybe syrup- fragrant and warm. “Hiding in the bushes waiting for me again, Johnny?” Camile questions, pushing her hands into her pockets and rolling back onto the heels if her feet. “I was creepin’ in the sewers, actually.” He quips back, letting out a chuckle.

His laughter is rich, and she likes to think that if she’d have closed her eyes, she would lean into it.

“Hm, well you certainly smell like it.” She turns, and starts walking towards the street from the trailhead she’d stepped into. Twenty feet ahead, she turns her head back and watches as he cautiously follows along. “Where're you going?” He asks, jogging for a moment- long legs striding out and catching up in seconds. “I was thinking we’d ditch the bench tonight, and I’d take you out to a proper bar.” 

“Woo’ing the bum now are we?” Johnny smirks, quirking a brow and leaning forward.

“The wind is rather chilly this evening, and I’d like to sit on something other than a rod iron park bench.” She replies bluntly.

The bar is quaint, a little sticky on the floor and the bartop but if you avoid resting the flesh of your forearms or let your feet linger in one spot too long it’s not hard to ignore. It’s warm, which is what she was shooting for. The office seemed to always be in a perpetual state of cold- layering sweaters and jackets only did so much, the tip of her nose a barely there dusting of rosey red when she checked her rearview mirror every night getting in her car to drive back home.

“So you’re working like dog.” He agrees to her rambling. 

She nods, leaning back on her barstool and reeling the old leather cushion press up against her back as she stares up at the ceiling. Photos tacked to the peeling paint and exposed wood- the occasional dollar bill or twenty tacked over photos, polaroids or newspaper clippings.

“And he’s so nice.” She groans. “I can’t say no. He’s nothing but nice- and I’d be letting everyone down if I didn’t go in and help.”

“But why can’t it be done during the week?” He questions.

“I… I don’t know. I think it’s a finicky client. Bringing in shit late- and to a certain point, when you're bringing in millions for someone like us to play with… We let them turn shit in late.” 

Johnny hums, taking a sip from his drink- something like a Scotch and Soda. She’d be sure to glance at the receipt when she paid to see what the man actually liked to drink outside of the sad offerings she’d bring to their little picnics.

“Sounds shady if you ask me.” He adds, finishing off his drink and signaling to the bartender for a refill. The bartender gives them a look that borders on disgust, the both of them pointedly ignoring how there's a three seat gap from the nearest person sitting near them. And no one has approached the empty chairs to fill them. 

“We’re a private equity firm. Everything we do is shady.” Camile laughs, rubbing the backside of her hand against her tired eyes. The screens and small print on paper certainly doesn't help, maybe the buzz isn’t helping either.

“What even is private equity?” He asks, his knees turning with him in the seat has he turns to face her. 

She can feel the heat radiating off of his legs- lingering on the feeling of warmth and fighting the instinct to slink closer. “No one knows. I have yet to get anyone to actually explain it.”

“Hm.”

“Mmmhm.”

They sit, and drink in a comfortable silence for a while longer, before Camile breaks the silence, glancing over to the large mans frame and asking, “Why are you homeless?” For a moment, she fully expects the facade of weird friendship she's built to completely crumble. For her to have to run to the bathroom and lock herself in a stall until she can call the cops to arrest the freak sitting next to her. A murderer- someone who slaughtered people for money. Maybe an ex foreign agent- the accent hadn’t escaped her mind. Maybe just a sad, washed up junkie was a velvety tongue and biceps she was pretty sure could crush a cantaloupe-

“I’m not homeless. I’m just a bum.” 

She stares at him dumbfounded for a moment. “...What?”

“I have… Had a home. I can go home any time, but I can’t go back there.” He offers, the glass in his right hand fills the confusion in her head with the sound of ice clinking against glass.

“So… You have a home. A shower? You have a shower, and a tub, and a sink, and a washer where you could go… not reek?” She offers, eyes squinting. 

“I sneak back sometimes. If I'm really desperate. Sometimes I just sweet talk women into letting me into their homes for a S&S.” His smile has faltered, and his gaze is hard set on the bartop. Eyeing the grain of the polished wood as if it were holy words.

“S&S?” 

“Shag & Shower.” 

“You’re a dog.” She groans.

“Good dogs get bubble baths.” 

She makes a face crossed with surprise and disgust, and for a moment she’s no longer the bone tired advisor of a convoluted department with mister honey & ‘can you come in on the weekend and be a team player!’ she’s just… Camile.

“You… Sneak back into your own place?” She asks.

“It’s complicated.” He offers. “I haven’t been back there in months.”

Something goes unsaid for a moment. That he’s hiding, running from something and hoping the shadow doesn't catch up with him. She purses her lips before finishing off her drink and setting the cool glass down onto the coaster, watching as the condensation collects and rolls down the ridged glass.

She's focusing so hard on a bottle on the shelf, not daring to glance over and meet those horribly blue eyes. It’s a bottle of Titos. Good ol’ Titos. She can focus on the clear liquid and the very interesting writing as long as she doesn't break her neck trying to meet his gaze. 

She’s toeing a fine line. A dangerous line. Even though she knows this man she doesn't really know him. Doesn’t know who he is- what he’s done. There’s a reason he’s sleeping on park benches and surprising her from the bushes to drink long into the evening. There’s a reason he has a home and isn’t going back to it. The red flags are up, the alarms are blasting.

But she can’t seem to hear them, nor see them over the wonderful liquid continued in that Titos bottle.

“If I’m good?” She can hear the smirk in his voice, and she will not break. Will. Not. Will not glance over. 

A warm hand engulfs the width of her thigh and spins the chair to the side, and she’s no longer staring intently at the little logo on the glass bottle. She’s staring into blue eyes. Her throat is tight, and it takes a moment for her to swallow before nodding in agreement.

“Of course I’d be good for you, Miss Camile.” She swallows. 

“Then let me pay our tab, and I’ll take you home.”

As she stands, his hand slides up from her thigh, to her side, and up into the pocket of her jacket. Reaching in and pulling out the long end of one of her keys and dancing the chain. Fingers pinched on the end- hands so much larger than her own, making the keys seem like toys. 

“I’ll drive.” He adds. “You’re lookin’ like you’re feeling pretty good right now.”

“You’ve been drinking just as much as I-” “Switched to just soda after the first.”

His grin is shit eating, but she finds no malice in it.

She finds nothing but warmth and the sweet scent of syrup leading her onward. And a raging buzz.
